Thanks for posting this! I'll be moving to Pittsburgh for grad school and wanted to experience taking the train all the way to New York! I appreciate the video! Keep it up!
The tracks between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg are NOT owned by Amtrak. Norfolk Southern allows Amtrak to use their tracks between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. I believe they also try to give Amtrak the highest priority as they can. The tracks between Harrisburg and Philadelphia are owned by Amtrak and it is their Keystone Corridor. The tracks between Philadelphia and New York City are Amtrak’s famous Northeast Corridor. Beautiful Video too! I subscribed!
Thanks so much! Yes, the tracks between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg are owned by NS. The Keystone Corridor between Harrisburg and Philadelphia and the NEC between Philadelphia and NYC are owned by Amtrak. I may have made a mistake in the video with that. Thanks for the sub!
Thanks so much for visiting our city of Pittsburgh! We love our city and it’s great to have Amtrak offer service here. I remember riding the Pennsylvaniain back in I believe 1996 for a trip to New York for Thanksgiving! Was awesome. Crazy how times have changed and the updates on the trains finally! Have you tried the Auto train Amtrak has? Be safe and keep up the good work!!
Pittsburgh is also a city that deserves more inter-city rail service. I am certain that an additional Pennsylvanian train, and maybe the resumption of the Three Rivers would make it more accessible. I mean 4 trains a day? Soon to be 2-3 with cuts to the Capitol Limited. For a city of 300K, 4 trains just doesn't cut it.
Thanks for this Dan. I really appreciate your style. Half the stuff on you tube is unbearable because people think I want to stare at their face half the time. This was done beautifully. Thanks.
Six hours of the trip is the stretch between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg on the NS line, so the speed is limited. Maybe someday Amtrak will get a dedicated line along with that second daily train that's been discussed recently.
When I rode from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg in the 1960s, the entire route was four tracks, with two tracks dedicated to passenger service. Of course, with one train a day that would be silly for Amtrak today.
What was your speed between DC and NYC? Between Harrisburg and DC? Suggestion for next Amtrak trip---CA. Zephyr. Its the most traveled and most scenic oa all Amtrak long distance trains. If you want the longest in miles and time, go Chicago to LA via San Antonio. That's three nights. I have traveled on all Amtrak long distance trains out of Chicago. Love them. Like a hotel on wheels---altho roomettes are rather expensive even with meals included. Thanks and enjoy.
You should should do a trip from Washington DC to Norfolk, VA. Norfolk has a beautiful new train station and the view approaching NFK is amazing. You see the Elizabeth River, Downtown Norfolk, and plenty of shipbuilding.
Dan, thanks a lot for this one! Really enjoyed the trip back from Pittsburgh and it checked off some boxes for me that I was curious about. Never made it to the Amtrak station in PGH when I was there but only to the south-side commuter rail station then went on a tour of the remaining trolley lines. Was "old rivets" (the prototype GG-1) there in Harrisburg station? It may have been retired to some museum if it was lucky (or we were lucky!) I almost raised my hand at an auction sale to buy one of those and was eternally grateful I didn't in hindsight. Whatta pain that would have been all-in-all. Thanks again!
You should try the Springfield line! Trains go from New Haven, Connecticut, to Springfield, Massachusetts! Its a very interesting line. I highly recommend it!
Thank you for the video. I am planning a short trip, NYC - PHL, and wanted to check out each of the trains on that route. Debating on getting Business over Coach, but it looks like the Coach in your video is really good so maybe I don't need to spend the extra money. I'll look up what the Business looks like. Thanks again.
I might’ve missed you saying this. But currently, Septa is the only fully electric commuter rail line in the US. You also have the RTD in Denver. But septa has been around for longer.
If you are looking for a train to take to the West Coast. There 3 that are great. The Empire Builder is my favorite of course, then you have the Zephyr and the Southwest Chief.
Amtrak and Wolffe have been in talks to increase frequency on the corridor. He wants to extend the Pennsylvanian back to Cleveland and extend 2 Keystones to Pittsburgh and back. I dont know how Norfolk Southern feels about that idea. they barely like the idea of having the Pennsylvanian on their tracks let alone another 2 trains each way. its sad that Pittsburgh Station i think had about 12 tracks. now it barely has 3.
for those people who say well you drive to new york city in half the time. the train is relaxing and enjoyable besides the views you have on the way unforgettable.
Useful video - many thanks. We are looking to visit from the UK, and doing this journey. Have you seen business class? Is it worth the extra money? Many thanks
Amtrak trains are not likely of the caliber of trains in Europe. Cars and planes are the preferred modes of transportation here (and for good reason once you've experienced Amtrak).
Timestamps relative to your leave time would be nice for events such as cities and stops! While YMMV, it would be nice for planning meals and sightseeing opportunities. Any clue what wheelchair accessibility on this train line is like?
Nice video! I would definitely love to try Amtrak one day. Looked like a relaxing ride. Something I don't understand is why are the platforms so dag on long when they usually get around 6-9 cars in a consist, sometimes even 10-12 for some other train services, those platforms look like they can handle about 20 cars lol.
Some of them are holdovers from the days when trains would actually get to that length. Others are done for flexibility if they need to run a longer train for whatever reason.
The answer is revealed just why Amtrak was created. During the 1960s when the USPS terminated the railroads mail contracts in favor of flying the mail long distances and trucking the mail short distances. No longer do passenger trains have a dozen or more mail cars on the consists. The platforms are long for the mail cars. Before this people paid extra for air mail. Without the mail contracts, the railroads terminated their passenger trains. Without the mail contracts, railroads went bankrupt, even the railroad serving the famed northeast corridor...
Hi! I’d like to ask 2 questions. The trip from Pittsburgh to NY did you go over any big bodies of water and was the train going real fast? Trying to get to Pittsburgh for Xmas and don’t feel like driving.
Thanks so much for your comment! The Pennsylvanian does cross a few rivers, lakes, etc... the majority of the trip west of Harrisburg crossing through small towns, mountains etc. The train hits a top speed of around 110mph between NY and Harrisburg then it gets a bit slower.
@@travelingadventureswithdan3181 thnx so much for responding. I ask because I’m afraid of water. Like going over bridges etc. The water it goes over is it a long or short ride over water & how many times if you remember? And when it hit that 110mph is it just running through land or both land & water?
Any trips for luggage or anything? Looking at the amtrak website it looks like it's overhead bin but if it's not I don't want to pack away something important.
Nope, the train runs once a day. Make sure you enter PGH for Pittsburgh as there are two listed stops. The other being for Grant St Transportation Center which Amtrak trains don't serve. Amtrak stops at Pittsburgh Union Station.
So you want us to believe that an Amtrak train was on time?? That's funny. I think the last time an Amtrak train was on time was 1992 (may have been 1993). It made the national and international news.
There is endless irrelevant train geek information in this video, but somehow the departure and arrival times are nowhere to be found. As of the time of this comment, the train leaves Pittsburgh at 7:30am and arrives in NYC at 4:50pm.

Great video. Thank you. It has encouraged me to take the same trip that I've been considering for some time.
How was it ?
Never again in life will i suffer on a greyhound bus if Amtrak offers service to the same destination.

Thanks so much! More train videos coming soon!
Thanks for putting Derry, PA in here 2:12
I'm into airplanes, but now I'm watching more train trip reprots. So this was an amazing one! Excellent job! Greetings from Puerto Rico!
Thanks so much! I'm planning to do more train trips so I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video!

Most trains on the NEC use the same 2x2 configuration in business class, So it's not really worth the upcharge.

Amtrak trains are not likely of the caliber of trains in Europe. Cars and planes are the preferred modes of transportation here (and for good reason once you've experienced Amtrak).

0:35 The Pennsylvanian is not a long distance service. Routes under 750 miles are not considered long distance.

Yeah, I'm guessing they do it so they don't run into a scenario where the platform is too short at terminus stations. Thanks for your comment!

yes
Don't they use the North Philadelphia station anymore?
It’s quite rare.
I’m always hoping they’ll figure out That Pittsburgh needs high platforms, but so far my dreams have not been realized.

What type of ticket did you have? Business class or Standard? I don't think you get an assigned seat, correct? So you just sit wherever you want?
Is it easy to find a taxi or rental car service at the Pittsburgh train station at 8:00pm? Thank you
I would like to see a report on the Chattanooga Choo Choo.....
So from Philly to NYC are you going backwards in you seat or are there seats that face the direction you're moving?
The Keystone does that.
why must Amtrak stations be so demoralizing?
was there smoking stops and you should do the silver meteor
Yes, Harrisburg and Philadelphia are the designated smoke stops. Thanks for the suggestion!
