It's sad how little love Spike gets. I used to buy the blind bags and they still don't have a blind bag figure for Spike. They have one for Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, a plethora of one-time backgrounders; but not Spike. What the hell, give the kid some much deserved love!
I agree, I don't get why even the toyline continues to neglect Spike. Hasn't he proved his popularity by now?
I've always liked Spike even back at the beginning, and I don't think he has that many bad episodes either. The only ones I can say I truly despise are Owl's well that ends well and Spike at your service. But Spike has grown into a very strong and confident character.
Song or not it took major guts for Spike who's still a kid by the way to stand there in a room full of grown ponies and tell them they were wrong about Thorax. My love and respect for him grew so high after that episode.
RedfurredPikachu Me too, that episode actually was the one that to me showed the strongest example in my eyes of embodying the messages of friendship in the series since they gave a lot of really well done build-up to Spike and Thorax's friendship.
I've seen a Spike figure
I have Spike figure. It was a gift in MLP magazine :)
Out of all the characters in MLP, I relate to Spike the most. He often doubts his worth, but won't hesitate to help someone in trouble. He prefers the secondary role, giving advice and input, but not having to be the one people look up to. But in the event someone DOES look up to him, he'll do everything he can to make sure he doesn't let them down.
In a way, Spike is just as good of a representation of an introvert as Fluttershy, and I relate to him in almost every way.

The most underrated Character.
Spike’s also my favourite character, even though I agree he can be whatever which is also why not all the episodes were the great with him. Mostly liked him in spike at your service (I found it a cute episode with him), power ponies, Equestria games (that one’s my favourite, just because I like how he’s being appreciated by princess Cadance which is also why I prefer it over the princess Spike which I agree it was stupid of him in that one), gauntlet of fire, times they are a changeling, triple threat, father knows beast (mostly because I like seeing the other main five ponies appear when it’s about Spike again) and sparkle’s seven. Also anybody else from my little pony friendship is magic that are my favourites are Twilight (most of the time, like that she’s the one to be taken care of Spike), Fluttershy (sort of), princess Cadance and starlight after she reformed. Any other episodes that didn’t have to do with Spike that are my favourite as well are best night ever, lesson zero, Luna eclipsed, Canterlot wedding parts 1 and 2, crystal empire parts 1 and 2, magical mystery cure, three’s a crowd, amending fences, royal problem and once upon a zeppelin.
Spike: Friends with not one, but THREE KINGDOMS!!! I'm safely saying that Canterlot and the Crystal Empire are in the same, the Dragon Empire, and the Changeling kingdom. I'm not saying it, but I got a feeling that the little dragon's going to be the major link between all of these otherwise different kingdoms

Season 6 was the best season for Spike so far, he had some amazing moments there. And episodes that he MAINed without being a fool, that was a very nice change.

Still a nice ep, but a weird choice I must say
squirtluigi I'm rather curious but what exactly could they have done? We only had Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy in the games and that's just for a single game so I'm unsure of how exactly they could have made it a full episode without it seeming extremely boring or just unnecessary. I think it was a good idea to put it in the background of the episode. Though then again, I think the whole let down behind the episode was because of the build up. But I'm just rambling now ^.^ sorry for wasting your time with this comment.

yes, I actually have no idea how a concept about olympics could have been interesting in a MLP show, but still, they made is seem like the episode was about it for a year and a half.
I didn't care, I didn't want to see an ep about olympics and I liked the Spike episode anyway, but it's easy to understand why a lot of fans were disappointed

To be fair with the dragon bit. Spike and other dragons are designed as Western dragons, who kidnap pretty girls, horde gold and roast nights. Compared to the more wise depicted Eastern dragons, the likes of Garble aren't off the mark of how dragons act.
Meanwhile in Pre-Colonial Mexico dragons were gods of wisdom and agriculture. Odd how symbols change in different cultures. Fun Fact: The current crest of an eagle 'eating' a snake over a cactus in the middle of the lake on the Mexican flag was based on the founding of Tenochtitlan (current day Mexico City). In official interpretations, the eagle is meant to symbolize good and the snake evil. BUT, by classical Aztec/Mayan translation, the eagle is meant to symbolize strength and the snake wisdom. Sooooo...yeah.
It seems that no matter the culture, Dragons will always be a constant. They may have different depictions in each culture, but the design and sometimes the meaning stays the same.
That dragon-pony gender symbolism is horribly sexist. After all, the two good dragons in this world are either female, or raised in the pony (feminine) culture.
Spike has a deeper connection with Twilight Sparkle. It was her powerful magic that hatched him
and gave him a pony-like face.
Something else may have happened, some powerful magic may be within him still.
It may arise in a moment of distress or great anger! A clever script writer can use this fact for a great story.
Spike may be a member of a long dead line of magic dragons. The UA-cam video : "Epic Spike", used this concept
in a fantastic display of power, when the little fire drake faced of against Sombra's legion of undead pony skeletons!
In nature when an egg hatches, the chick or lizard immediately views the one it first sees as mom..
That would make Twilight Sparkle Spike's mom by proxy..

Season 6 for me is probably the best time for Spike! I mean his two main appearances "Gaulent of Fire" and especially "The Times They Are a Changeling" presents the best out of Spike by helping out a Tsundere Dragon get more in touch of the motion of friendship, and even did all that he could to help an innocent Changeling be realized that not every enemy doesn't want to be bad, despite being apart of an evil race! Sure, I do like his deeds in other episodes like "The Crystal Empire" and "The Equestria Games" because that shows him being a hero!
I really like Spike and Crusaders. I'd like an episode with those four one day.

Season 8
There was Equestria games (the only good one with them having a role when it’s Spike), but after that they didn’t appear when it was about him after getting their cutie marks except for him sort of interacting with them in newbie dash, and them mentioning him in hard to say anything and campfire tales. There was also Big Mac question too a bit, but anyways, I find it a bummer that they never appeared when it was about him after getting their cutie marks. Oh yeah Spike at your service had apple bloom a bit too.
I've always said that Spike is the most... er, how do I say this... he's not the worst character, just the most disappointing. By this I mean that there's SO MUCH untapped potential being ignored with him! Thankfully, in recent years, it seems that the writers are beginning to wake up. One can only hope we see more Spike greatness in the future.
Just gotta say, love the FMAB avatar. Also I really agree. When I heard about some writers saying they just wrote Spike as a character who gets treated like crap for comedy, it really disappointed me because I think he deserves to be a lot more than just comic relief since he is a character who works well in his own right.
I think a lot of that has to do with new writers coming in and a lot of the old ones aren't around anymore. People who might've watched the show before joining and wanted to do Spike justice.

Please don't make the mistake everyone seems to make.
That's the "SPIKE The Dragon Code". It's his code, not a code that all dragons must follow.
Yet in the same episode Twilight says that "[T]his is dragon code we're talking about. Surely you know how important the dragon code is to a dragon!"
So while the code may vary between dragons, I get the impression that they do adhere to a specific code that they pledge.

relating spike to anime here, spike reminds me of Deku from My Hero Academia, and how they only want to help people, nothing else.
Spike kinda reminds me of Gohan and Goku from DBZ, Gohan is a half Saiyan and half human, he shows his caring side to his family and friends to others because of his human side but he isn't afraid to let lose and show his power from his Saiyan side in order to protect his loved ones. It's kinda the same for Goku, thanks to the Earth, (and getting hit in the head) Goku has shown a more caring and passionate side to him, which is not ideal for a Saiyan (like when spike is more caring than dragons but it's not ideal for them) and he's willing to give mercy to his enemies but if he's pushed too far he gathers his strength and beats down the enemy no matter what challenge he faces. Spike shows his dragon side and his pony side (not literally, just the influence on him) he can be strong and courageous to get through a challenge and he can be caring and give advice to his friends thanks to the influence from the ponies.

Spike has always been one of the most relatable and likable characters for me. He's goofy, has a ton of responsibility, doesn't fit in, yet always tries his best (even when it's not appreciated). He's got sass, as well as class. And he's a baby dragon with a teenage attitude. He may not be the best of the Mane 6, but they sure wouldn't be where they are today without him. Three cheers for Spike!

Spike has always been the cause of many errors, mistakes... throughout the entire show. There are lots of things I've discovered and always knew a very long time ago about Spike's character. It was Twilight herself all along who saved the Crystal Empire, not him. She knew where to find the heart, she found the hidden passage to it, she told Spike to bring it back, risking herself by failing Celestia's test…
The writers had that in mind the whole time until the fans suddenly wanted them to change that because they were just sick and tired of Spike's abuse, horrible treatments, and how he mostly spent his appearances in the shadows in all the previous seasons. They wanted them to put an end to the damage on Spike's role, treatments… but never realized or wanted to realize that they've damaged the entire SHOW themselves because of that.
They couldn't learn to get used to it and were too sensitive over that. He was meant only to be the simple sidekick and a goofy character that provides comic relief, screws up, embarrassing himself… usually, a simple background character. The episode "Princess Spike" where he completely messes up was one of his usual, typical roles, then learning his lessons… in "Secret of My Excess"… And in "Just for Sidekicks" where he looks after the Mane Six's pets while they're gone on adventures, no wonder why he was (supposed to) mostly left behind and only had few appearances throughout the show.
The show's based on ponies, which means THEY are the ones who defeat villains, going on adventures… and the show became a total disaster because of the changes in Spike the writers did because of those sensitive fans. The episode "Gauntlet of Fire" had major flaws, as well, and MANY others, especially Spike episodes. All the more reason why there weren't supposed to be and shouldn't have been any Spike episodes AT ALL. I gotta say that the episode was written by the fans themselves. Twilight couldn't handle some teenage dragons, (creatures who only could fly and breath fire, no magic, completely weak and harmless enough against powerful, magical ponies) but in other episodes like "Twilight's Kingdom", she confronts Tirek just fine, which proves that is just one of those stupid excuses from the fans to show Spike doing something good for once, just for once. Of course, he only hands over the specter to Ember. All this "character development" Spike got was a huge mistake made by the fans themselves, and totally caused the show to derail completely!
The writers of the show had to do those catastrophic changes just so those Spike fans wouldn't stop watching the show and would have fewer watchers (or probably no watchers at all) and all their hard work on it would've been for NOTHING. They'd CANCEL the entire show, throw it away straight in the trash can.

My favorite moment with Spike, personally, is when he falls under that fear spell used by Sombra. It was heartwarming to see both that his greatest fear is loosing Twilight, and to see Twilight take time from her quest to comfort him(Unlike Power Ponies). A little note, I wonder how Twilight felt in that moment, seeing as she used dark magic to activate that spell, if I recall.

Glad season 6 put Spike on the right track. In fact season 6 kinda feels like an apology for Spike's long years of abuse.

Season 4 gave him strong episodes too, but after season 5 the inconsistent nature of his episodes stopped. His episodes never dropped bellow good again afrter that.

I loved Spike since episode 1, which made it frustrating that his episodes tended to fluxiate before Season 6. From that season on his episodes have never dipped below good quality at least in my opinion. It's why I say it's for the better that the veteran writers left the show after Season 5, the new ones definetly appreciated Spike more and valued his inclusion. Heck it's apparent that Spike is one of Josh Haber's favorite characters aside from Starlight. Because the dragon's always been apart of his two parters in some way and is given a role of his own as opposed to being left out with the soul exception being To where and Back again but everyone was captured during it. I could say the same for the pair of Joana Lewis and Kristine Songco who made Gauntlet of Fire and certainly seem to understand Spike as a character too.
Those three are the best examples but the point is the change in writing staff was a benefit to the show. Spike was treated much better, and Trixie actually became a likeable character. The original writers were awesome but it was clear they didn't really know how to handle Spike especially when it came to his own episodes. The episodes that stand out as really good to me are Secret of my Excess, Power Ponies, Inspiration Manifestation, as well as Equestria Games. Just for Sidekicks was just decent, Princess Spike is very mixed, and the last three are awful that wasn't a good ratio for him for the first half of the show.
I honestly don't care what anyone else says. Spike is easily one of the coolest childhood characters on the show. I wish I could have been HALF as cool as he was when I was that young instead of being such a self-absorbed goober. And I can easily forgive a lot of his short comings because he is a kid, that's what kids do, they have dumb moments and missteps in life that they can learn from. We all go through that.
Though, I guess it's safe to say I wouldn't be defending Spike if there wasn't some redeemable qualities about him. He puts in the effort and manages to make a difference; as highlighted in this very video.
I think Spike is quite unique as a complex servant character. He values himself largely on others and how much he can bring to them. What I appreciate is that this is not treated as a bad thing. People should be allowed to place their value in being useful to others rather than themselves if they prefer that. There is a big difference between a slave and a servant. A slave is the property of someone and has no choice or identity of their own. A servant chooses that rather than living their own life to dedicate themselves to making someone else successful. They get gratification from seeing others successful.
Spike is like Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars, he starts off as annoying and bratty for the community, but as the seasons go by he starts to mature and grow, just as we do. I reckon that off-screen in some episodes, he would have singing lessons from Fluttershy and training to mature and prevent his greed from growing any further from Zecora. Both paid off after ''The Times they are a Changeling,'' and ''Molt Down''
when Spike was the sarcastic little heckler I loved him. he was so caustic it was awesome. now he is hit or miss.

I'd say I liked Spike from the start. Considering I grew up with the original Spike and saw the weird interation from Princess Promenade, I enjoyed him as a more 3D character which grew even more as the show progressed.
Although I agree about se4 despite it being a contender for my favorite season. My still least favorite episode overall is "Equestria Games" because it was a completly disconnected way to end 2 season long story arc(as a part of it, it would have been fine) but also it brought me to the point of "someone put him out of his misery" and didn't manage to pull me back up.
Spike might be Tricky to write for, but if you focus on a good story and think what he would do rather than just the comedy of it, then you can get some dragon gold.

Spike is so easy to overlook. That was a great tribute. I think Spike's greatest accomplishment is sticking up for Thorax, when no one else would. It is very touching, and he helped save the changlings. The comparison of dragons and ponies to gender roles in interesting. I do see how that works. Dragons have always been my favorite creature in fantasy. Once I became a brony, horses became my second favorite. They are different. I think of the main difference as between good and evil. Dragons are traditionally depicted as evil. They are a foe for the hero to slay. Horses are traditionally depicted as good. The realistic ones are a steed for the hero to ride. This can apply for more supernatural ones. Unicorns are depicted and pure and benevolent. The original pegasus was a steed for the Greek hero Bellaphron. The Sleeping Beauty movie is an excellent example. It even has the color scheme right. Prince Phillip is the hero, who rescues Princess Aurora. He rides a white horse, named Sampson. He fights a black dragon, who is Maleficent shape shifted. MLP does have this trend. The horses are all into friendship, which is all good. Dragons tend to be mean and nasty, which is like evil. Spike is an exception to the dragon trend. He is very nice, and he is affiliated with the horses. Spike is a dragon that can change, which is like Thorax. A honerable mention for my favorite fantasy creature is a griffon. You are a hippogriff, which is similar. I am impressed you were a hipogriff before they were canon. I wonder if you can turn into a hippocampus. That would make a cool skit, if you ever review the MLP movie.
But it wasn't Spike's song that changed people's mind. That was the point. His actions (singing) affected Twilight but not the rest, it was Twilight who moved by his courage managed to get the other ponies to change their minds. The song was silly and cringy - and it didn't work. On anyone except Twilight, and not because of the song but because she saw him trying to help his friend despite the fact that they should be enemies. That is quite powerful and so many people overlook it.

Flare Gun Yeah, well it was Twilight that spoke up in favour of Spike's opinion. But everyone seems to focus on the song as the focal point and that is simply not the case.
Ikajo except words from twilight shouldn't had been enough to change their minds. With characters like Shining Armor changelings basically invaded his hometown and kidnapped his fiancée and left her for dead. And with the possibility of them kidnapping his new born daughter and invading another place that he lives in it feels very rushed like a complete 180 to believe the dragon who for all they know is being fooled or is replaced by another changeling to use Spikes reputation to influence their actions and his sister who doesn't even know that changeling for more then two minutes.
Ryan Carson I honestly don't care that much... it is still a children cartoon, it is not meant to be for adults. I just wanted to point out it wasn't actually the song itself that changed people's mind.
Spike is a character that definitely needs more love and appreciation in a world of Ponies. The artist dSana does a great job highlighting the extent of the relationship especially between him and Twilight, as a mother and son dynamic. :)

Spike was an important character on season 6. For example: He could be the dragon´s lord, but he prefer gave the power to princess Ember. This decision make a great aliad of Equestria for the future.
I can believe the others accepting Thorax through song because it's been shown that songs are a part of social life. On several occasions characters have mentioned something along the lines of "it's not the right time for a song", so it would seem that the songs aren't just for theatrical performance, but are actually something that the characters do.

Now season 4 is good but I really don’t like how spike was treated I mean it’s like a way of Lauren Faust herself saying “you boys better stay away from this girl show or this will happen to you” kinda like in the toy story movie where Pixar had a way in the movie telling Disney their behind with their movies
That was Mcarthy treating Spike wrong not Faust, Faust didn't treat Spike the best either but she was never NEARLY as bad as Mcarthy in that regard

I didn't like how they always shit on Spike, when it's convenient to do so they made his brain fall out in secret of my excess when he really wanted a broom just because Twilight called it amazing they seem to forget his intelligence rivals Twilight's; even in 28 pranks later Rainbow Dash tricks him into sending Celestia a room of scrolls as if he didn't know how many scrolls he was sending. They never gave him a badass moment like they gave all the girls.
Spike is my Second favourite Character on the show, and I hate it when the show staff treat him poorly such as when he is presented as the Cause of the Problems, Greedy or just plain Stupid, Season 6 had two GREAT Spike Episodes and quite a few standout moments; aiding Starlight reconcile with Sunburst, Competing in the Guantlet to protect the Ponies from Garble, Befriending Thorax despite what others believed, Giving Discord a chance to join in on Guys Night and he has far less pointless inclusions like Season 4's Bats episode where he spoke one pointless line and then did nothing, Spike is the BEST when he's Selfless and Understanding, Willing to help others without expecting a reward or thanks, being the Voice of Reason so to speak, that's Spike at his best, and I hope the show continues to expand upon his greatest traits and give him the love he deserves, None of that Princess Spike Crap

while I love MLP and Spike is a great B cast member but there Dragon lore sucks so hard should of taken tips from D&D. he was wrongful given credit for getting the heart back and Equestria games was both a bad episode and bad end to an ark. gauntlet of fire shows more of there crappy lore I mean why no adult dragons. changelings where such a great bad guy.now there gone, ruined and left with a shit design to boot.
Yea, the complaint about Spike and his song in Thorax's episode by the fandom seems super hipacritical to me: so a supervillain feared for a thousand years and a power, hungry leader that can strip away soul identity, both of whom almost destroyed to world, can be welcomed back without a word but giving a chance to someone who's committed no crime and has the backing of the Crystal hero, the ruling queen, and the princess of friendship is unbelievable?

Spike is the only reason I started watching MLP.
That and I got tired of seeing all the fan-art without knowing what is going on.
What every pony seems to overlook is how Spike is one very bad day away from becoming a unstoppable monster that is easily capable of burning down all of Equestria to ash, while defeating its protectors with ease as he knows them so well from knowing and being with them for so long. He’s like Batman and Wolverine in that sense as these two characters have been proven to be the most dangerous among their respective groups, having taken their allies down with ease in stories like Old Man Logan, DC Metal, and Tower of Babel. I know this video was made long before the movie, but we already got a hint at the carnage he can inflict with him disintegrating three of the storm kings forces to ashes in his green flame. Imagine what he can do when he’s a little older, the hell he would inflict upon his enemies would be tremendous!!

The funny thing is I can't help but to think of the movie sing, the reason why is because you could consider Spike something of the stagehand. While the stagehand may never be on stage in the center limelight could the show will go on without him? I mean let's be honest here, how well could twilight survive without Spike? It's already been shown to without him she has fits of a nervous breakdown or forget the things like sleep.
They need to quit wasting time and have an episode about Spike's parents.

4:35 5:14 Spike’s my favourite character, even though I agree he can be whatever which is also why not all the episodes were the great with him. Mostly liked him in spike at your service (I found it a cute episode with him), power ponies, Equestria games (that one’s my favourite, just because I like how he’s being appreciated by princess Cadance which is also why I prefer it over the princess Spike which I agree it was stupid of him in that one), gauntlet of fire, times they are a changeling, and triple threat. Also anybody else from my little pony friendship is magic that are my favourites are Twilight (most of the time, like that she’s the one to be taken care of Spike), Fluttershy (sort of), princess Cadance and starlight after she reformed. Any other episodes that didn’t have to do with Spike that are my favourite as well are best night ever, lesson zero, Luna eclipsed, Canterlot wedding parts 1 and 2, crystal empire parts 1 and 2, magical mystery cure, three’s a crowd, amending fences, royal problem and once upon a zeppelin. Also I was thinking of a fan-made spin off crossover series with Spike crossing over with the kids shows, Max & Ruby (seasons 1 to 5), the Backyardigans, and Veggietales too which I have made stories on my laptop too, also the different companies will be merged together. It’s called the Max Morris Spike & Backyardigans show which will be a mix between canon and non-canon to all seasons, the movie and two specials (due to events being mentioned in my series), but will be back in the present time with Twilight back to her normal Alicorn form and being the princess of friendship and princess Celestia and Luna back to being the rulers. It will have Spike (from my little pony friendship is magic), Max and Morris (from Max & Ruby) and Austin, Uniqua, Pablo, and Tyrone (from Backyardigans) to be the main characters while also having Max’s toys, Tasha and a lot of the other animals in Backyardigans and twenty or twenty-three Veggietales characters to be the secondary characters. The main six along with Starlight and Sunburst, the crusaders with their cutie marks, princess Celestia, Luna, and Cadance, shining armour and flurry heart, along with Ruby and the other bunny characters (from seasons 1 to 5 of Max & Ruby), and the other siblings, parents, boyfriend and wife of the main six, starlight and sunburst and also the cake family too are all going to be minor characters too. The reason why is because in episodes about him in seasons 6 and 7, most of the main six ponies (except for twilight and rarity in one) didn’t appear when it was about him even though they did appear for ones about him in seasons 8 and 9. Also I feel that they should’ve had princess Cadance to appear in another Spike episode after times they are a changeling since that one and Equestria games (which is mainly my favourite episode from the show) were the only two good ones with them together since I agree princess Spike was definitely whatever for Spike in that episode. And I just feel like next to Twilight, since she and Cadance get along, they should’ve had Spike to get along with her more often too after that season 6 episode.
I want to see Spike as an intermediary between cultures in an episode about him trying to form an alliance between Equestria, the Dragon Nation and Changeling Kingdom. Imagine Twilight having another chance at politics after the Yak fiasco. Maybe Celestia comes along to keep Twilight in check, Spike acts as advisers to Ember and Thorax, ideals clash, tempers fly, Celestia drinks tea awkwardly, Spike desperately tries to bring the parties together, and hilarity ensues.

I have many issues with how Spike is portrayed and how the ponies treat him. Hell, it is PART of him to become a giant dragon...but his friends wouldnt accept that. Right or wrong, they literally keep him in a STUNTED condition. They rarely thank him and some, like Rarity, seem to openly MANIPULATE him.
It is...kind of infuriating. Really, it was later episodes (Power Ponies and Spike At Your Service stand out) that had him being...not a snarky helper but a subservient, cretinous thing, the butt of jokes.
Its not universal by any means. But it is a large enough streak that it gets tiresome.
I do enjoy him and Ember. They offer something to one another. I would love to see some more assertive Dragonness be hammered into him, if just to offset the Ponies cultural superiority bullshit.
Oh, right, should mention this ties into the shows constant "Pony ways are best, so lets educate the poor backwards other cultures" that is really humming about the place with the latest season.
Which wouldn't even be a bad thing...if they acknowledged the other cultures offer something WORTHWHILE to the table. Yknow, that isnt BLOODY FRIENDSHIP or is FRIENDSHIP in a different manner.

While I agree that Season 4 was the start of Spike being written and presented better in the show (Spike abuse aside), I've liked him as far back as Season 2, starting with Secret of My Excess. Excellent video Silver, as usual, and Spike is best dragon!
I feel obligated to mention what I consider Spike's best scene. In Equestria Games, he was choking in front of a stadium full of ponies; he didn't give up or run away; he kept trying. As someone who's performed in front of an audience, I can tell you that takes guts...

I just want to know what the situation is with Spike's non-existent wings. My working theory right now is that he is either an "earth dragon" and therefore will never have them or he hasn't grown them yet. I'm think it is more likely that he hasn't grown them yet since almost every single dragon we've seen has wings.
I don't believe Spike is selfish at ALL!
Neither do I, I mean honestly it's very rare when he does act that way. I notice that Secret of my excess falls under the Spike creates his own problem and others have to solve it episode. But really that's not the case at all, the first thing Spike does in the episode is give a gem he's really wanted to eat to Rairty simply to make her happy. Because of that Spike is able to save himself by remembering the selfless thing he did. So I deny that Spike didn't solve the problem himself in that episode, and honestly the other characters tended to make it worse.
Spike is great. I just wish for an episode where he hangs with the Crusaders (and that's not just my SpikeBelle ship talking). He's always with full grown mares, it'd be interesting to see how he interacts with characters closer to his age and being the only kid dragon in Ponyville.

Spike has the makings of an ambassador! That might be his future career, aside with being Twilight's assistant as well! With helping Equestria gain an alliance with both the dragons and changelings, no doubt it's his purpose in life! The exact reason why Celestia found and raised him along with Twilight!
As I see it, the main six are like mid teens working towards defined goals and interests. Spike on the other hand is like a youger pre-teen brother, maybe seen as being a year or two older than the CMC. Unlike the CMC Spike is still passively exploring who he is. This awkward undefined stage could explain why Spike's character has been so hard pin down.

So i have been having a question in my head for a while now, and that question is
"Is spike actually smart ?"
Now i know what your thinking "how is Spike smart ?". I will be honest and say that "smart" might not be the right word, but i have to point out the fact that Spike has been Twilight´s assistant since he was hatched and Twilight has on multiple occasions proven to be something of a bookworm, and Sike himself has been seen healping her to research or listen to her presentations and theories, and i know of at least one occasion where he was the only one to understand what Twilight meant when she explained how she was going to measure "Wing Power" (is that what was used in "Hurrican Fluttershy" ?).
So yeah i think Spike is actually pretty smart, a bit naive and immature sure but smart all the same (and again i must point out that i am not sure if smart is the right word here).
...and now he's a flamethrower.
