Starlight’s best moment so far? School daze, episode 2. “I’m not gonna cheer you up, im gonna tell you what you did wrong. You gave up too quickly. ...you didn’t give up on me, so why not for this?” This is by far, the best starlight moment IMO. The student retaught the teacher what the teacher taught her. She was the highlight of the ep, hands down.
When I saw "The Crystaling" episode, I noticed a connection between Fluttershy and Starlight: the two of them exchanged a look during Shining Armor's introduction, and later on when they all got back on the train, it was Fluttershy whom Starlight went to go sit by. Plus, there's also the fact that Fluttershy was the only one of the Mane 6 who was able to fool Starlight when she was still a villain. So I'm the most anxious to see an episode with just those two going on a little adventure. :)
Ha! You gotten everyone of the mane six and starlight to face palm. Now you only need the princesses including flurry heart, the villains if you haven't already, discord, cmc, the other world leaders, and the ultimate goal Larson and Faust!
Starlight's rapid shift from terrifying villain to uncertain new friend confused me, but I've found a way to interpret her character that helps me understand her better. In some way, she still believes in her old ethos, or at least doesn't/can't fully understand why it was wrong. Most ponies automatically think of others as 'fellows', sapient beings just like them who have the same right to free will as they do, but due to a combination of her childhood isolation and her naturally immense talent, Starlight doesn't have that. She's been above and isolated from others so long that she genuinely forgets that they are 'people' (I know they're ponies, but I needed the word), and to manipulate their minds or force them to conform is to violate them. She treats ponies like they are objects she can bend to her will with no consideration for their feelings, and it's no surprise that she has this state of mind: her cult members, lacking all the traits that made them unique and completely obedient to her, were the only ponies she had any contact with for who knows how long. However, she knows now it's not right of her. She wants to have friends and be close with other ponies and have their trust, and she knows that the only way she can have that is if she learns to respect her fellow ponies as equals and respect the sanctity of their free will. So despite her entire understanding of the world up until now, she's trying very hard to learn from Twilight and internalize that idea. She continues to resort to magical manipulations because she still doesn't fully understand why it's wrong. All the while, she's aware of this problem she has, which is why she's so scared when the villagers ask her to help run things. I think the speech she gave at the end to Chrysalis wasn't just parroting what Twilight told her, though; I think she actually made a significant step toward having respect for her fellow ponies through that ordeal in the hive. All her teammate's unique abilities and personalities were useful in getting them through their obstacles; more than that, the sight of the drones all forced to act the same despite their unique personalities and be blindly loyal to their selfish queen might've reminded her of her own village. Seeing the changeling hive helped clarify for her what was wrong about what she'd done; it takes more than the disapproval of others and the guilt they put on you to learn from your mistakes, you have to understand for yourself how your actions did harm. And she does understand now, or at least she understands more now than she did earlier in the season.
I still think Starlight would have been perfect as a reoccurring villain. She deeply opposes Twilight's mentality yet is not too powerful. Someone like Discord could never have been a reoccurring villain as him being free and evil is a catastrophe.
I think that the point of Starlight is to show that even though you have a lot of power, you might not be the perfect person personality and decision wise. She has control over her powers but still she sometimes doesn't know when and for what to use them.
I am not sure if Silver Quill would approve of that, but I'm genuinely curious about what your viewers think about Starlight... If you like her, please upvote this comment. Otherwise upvote the other. Let's see which one gets more?
This was definitely something I needed to see. I've been on the fence about how I feel for Starlight. She's not my favorite character, but I like how she's growing as one 😊
The rabid Starlight haters were the reason my hatred for the fandom reignited from Season 4. After the whole Equestria Games debacle passed and season 5 came along it died down, but then when Starlight started becoming a loveable character for some that's when it happened. I've been on the receiving end of harassment from those fans for some time now and with comments I saw from them regarding episodes such as Every Little Thing She Does, Hearth Warming Eve Tale, and To Back and Where Again, has almost made me consider leaving the fandom all entirely. But now I realize that it makes me love Starlight even more. I'll admit she is not a perfect character and is flawed, but she made quite of a improvements in season 6 and with season 7 coming in less than a month I think she'll become an even better character as time goes on.
On the one hand, this is a Sliver Quill video which always manage to be entertaining and thought provoking. ...on the other hand, it's a Starlight Glimmer video. Hmm
I feel the biggest problem with Starlight at the moment is that the show has simultaneously Ignored AND focused too much on her mistakes. They talk about how she's done wrong in the past and in episodes like "Every Little Thing She Does" they acknowledge she still has a lot to learn, but they don't actually address the mistakes themselves. All we got in terms of retribution for her actions in season 5 was immediate forgiveness from both the towns ponies and the mane 6. As a result, Starlight is repeatedly and annoyingly feeling the need to redeem herself, while everyone is telling her they forgive her. This isn't helping her, Starlight needs to feel like her actions have been adequately punished before she can let go of the guilt and actually begin to heal.
But how do you do that since A It's a show aimed at younger kids B. The staff have moved far past that. I think what would've helped is if Cutie Remark picked one future stuck with it, and had Starlight be sucked in with Twilight. She'd probably be caught into the same trouble as Spike and Twilight would be. But Ultimately she'd see the pain and suffering she caused and help to work to fix it. Sunset became a Pariah and had to earn everyone's trust and acceptance back. Starlight was so forgiven so quickly it was whiplash inducing. :/
Here's a rather easy way to do it. Have Starlight have a nightmare about slipping back into her old habits and seeing her old self destroy everything she's grown to care about. Have Luna show up to help. Have Starlight explain that she fears she hasn't made up for her own mistakes despite being forgiven. Luna talks about how those self same feelings led to her creating the Tantabus. Then Luna and Starlight figure out something they can do *together* that they feel will help assuage their feelings of guilt by giving back to the community more directly. Could even start the episode with Starlight pushing herself too hard to prove herself, leading to Twilight telling her she doesn't have to keep making up for the past since everyone's already forgiven her- Starlight: But I still haven't forgiven myself...
Your skill as a writer (helped by your deadpan line delivery) never fails to bring a smile to my face. It goes without saying that you also make me think.
Love Starlight a lot! >< From the very first episode she was in. now i love her even more and can see myself in her! :D It's pretty encouraging seeing her success in her 'friendship lessons' even if she struggles at first Nice job on the video on her. I hope to see her interact with the other main characters more often, too :3
I personally am so happy with how season 6 Starlight turned out! She didn't take over season 6 so much as SAVE it! But I think you're right, now is the time to take a step back and integrate her into the core group a bit more. I wanna see how she can work of the characters I love as opposed to outshining them. Also nice 6th ranger reference and Delta brony music! Never stop making videos!
I also don't like what they did with the changelings. I absolutely adored the changelings because there was no easy solution. They challenged everypony's morals because they were completely sentient parasites. It's very understandable that ponies are repulsed by their appearance and find it creepy to have their love drained. However it's very heartless to say they deserve to starve to death just because they are unnerving. The blame wasn't with either of them. That's what gave people so much material to work with. Unlike the racism against Zebra's which just like human racism doesn't have much legs to stand on. Pony dislike of changelings is understandable yet understandable does not mean it's justified. At the same time the changelings are not completely in the right either as they kidnap ponies and impersonate them. Sometimes even openly attacking ponies.
@9752matt Not quite. After season 6, Starlight has more to learn about friendship. And about the changelings, who are perfect as they are. That would make sense if they weren't all the same. Black. When they get different designs, they start to learn about friendship with help because they are new to it. They understand that it is more pleasant to share love than to steal it.
I found that power rangers comparison very appropriate to get the point across. This was a great break down of where her character was, where she is now and where she could go in the future depending on if she's put into more normal circumstances with other characters to really expand on her personality more. Great video!
Given his views on her, likely due to him simply not liking her or having anything positive to say, and not wanting to make a video just bashing her, given he tries to make these celebrations of what makes a character great.
Well, that's probably as close as we'll get to it. It was her and Shining Armor's respective celebration day, and at least Silver found something they could represent together. I'm fine with that.
I know this video is a year old, but I just spent the past few hours watching every video you made around one character. Watching all of these videos doesnt just reinspire me as to strive to do more on the community (even if i havent done anything on youtube yet), but it also reminds me as to why I began following you, but to also give me faith. You're a reviewer and analyst, which means that you take apart every detail an individual or a scene has, and judge it not by your moral standards, but by morals in general. You're quirky, funny, love to pull jokes and gags, but you're much more than just an entertainer. You're intelligent, sightful, open and caring. When I watch your videos, I dont just watch to be entertained; I watch to get a better understanding or possibly seeing a differing opinion than my own. Essentially what I am saying Ailver Quill is, thank you. Thank you for all that you do. I hope to one day become a much more active member of the community, to voice my own opinion, and maybe discuss some things with you properly in the future. Thanks again.
I love Starlight so much she is an awesome character that has become a special pony in everyponys heart. Starlight keep it up we are all rooting for you! Silver Quill keep up the awesome work your one of the best Pony tubers on youtube
Silver, when you mentioned 6th ranger syndrome; I kinda realized that the reason why I like Starlight and Luna so much. As a fellow Toku fan, I thank you for making this review that make me like both of them even more now. But Fluttershy is still my best pony.
The cartoon logic at the beginning gave me a good giggle. It's something I could see happening in the show. You were like a cross between Pinkie Pie and Discord in hippogriff form. And thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! As someone who didn't grow up watching Power Rangers, it was interesting to hear your description of Starlight as a "sixth ranger". It certainly seems to suit her character. ^_^
@@samuelkriz2761 if you mean the one in the season finale, i thought that was a pretty cool fight. really showed just how powerful Starlight is, even when shes just a unicorn and not an alicorn
Thank you so much Silver your video was really needed, to get me to be able to feel again. My grandfather died this morning and I found out this afternoon. I was stuck in this numb state where I didn't want nor need to cry yet I could bring myself to truly be happy. I smiled and joked to make my family feel better but I could not get myself to feel anything. Your video made me smile and even giggle a little! I still feel numb but now it is a little bit better than before. Thank you again!
I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember how it felt after my grandfather passed away. I'm glad that this video can help in some small way. Hang in there!
While Starlight's redemption was rushed I really like her character. I know some people see her as a bad copy of Sunset Shimmer, but they're two different characters, and I like what the writers have done with Starlight. (For the most part). She brings an interesting prospective into the show. I also really like the dynamics between Starlight and Spike, the two of them seem to have gotten close relatively soon and I like that Spike in particular is able to talk to someone who is not always Twilight. (Of course that's just my personal opinion).
Starlight Glimmer is in the end like Grimlock from Transformer G1 , an uber powerful character (brawn for the T-rex autobots, magic for Glim Glam) able to go toe to toe with main characters and villains, used when sh*t hit the fan (like all autobots paralysed during episode Rise of Atlantis or the Season 6 finale for MLP or Royal Problem arises), but lacking some long term planning about their actions (like for Grimlock not considering that if Earth is destroyed, then he will too or for Starlight the butterfly effect from time travel or her mind control magic spell) That's why writers use her when they want to surpass a 'Godzilla' 's treshold about magic disasters amd add more fun or epicness to the show (plus her latent wish to command by offering even as heroine character hint and tips about what her guts to other members of the cast using the sledgehammer approach, where as villain was more an emotion manipulative chessmaster like Cozy Glow today) Her main sin for fandom is her too quick forgive from Mane 6 and her Town' fellows in Season 5 finale (and about keeping contacts with Sunburst we have deduced the acceptable explanation that he became a near shut in after being expelled from Magic gifter unicorn School for his lacking about 'operative' magic), but present days she is used also to interact with more secondary characters (buy our toys) and having a sarcastic dry benevolent humour about some clichè of the show like songs, Twiligh' speeches and moral lessons.
Dang I wish Silver could give me a pep talk. Amazing video though, I absolutely love how insightful these always are! They kind of go beyond just regular review or analysis videos, and become a really great lesson on aspects of our world too. Thank you for taking the time to do these!
Starlight Glimmer, the unicorn with Alicorn-level magic. To be honest, I liked her revenge-arc. It showed a lot of interesting possibilities for Equestrias and on top of that it showed just how powerful she really is. However, to counter this... it means she is also yet another character with a whole lot of potential that is just completely unexplored. Sunset Shimmer, Celestia and Luna, Trixie, and now Starlight Glimmer all have unexplored story arcs that we haven't seen. Oh sure some things are simply assumed as to how they got to where they are. But for example: Sunset Shimmer was shown to be power hungry but we don't know how or why she got that personality quirk. We never saw Celestia going through one thousand years of solitude, we never saw Luna having her steady emotional breakdown until she rebelled against her sister. We never see why Trixie claims she is as good at magic as everypony else, nor why she got into stage-magic over other forms. Heck for that matter we never saw how Cadence became an Alicorn. Yes it's in a book but I wanna see it in an episode! We also still haven't seen how or why Discord is. It's just accepted that he exists; but why? All of the main villains so far have had a reason for existing. Changelings, Tirek, Sombra and the Umbrum, Nightmare Moon, and so on... but Discord is an enigma. And even if he is pure chaos, he still has to have an origin point. Everything does. And... and... I'm ranting. Sorry.
Yeah me too i liked her revenge arc too, i agree with you it exacly showed how powerful and skilled she is/was and that’s why she is my favourite villain
Granted Starlight is not a fav character overall, but you pointed out a aspect I love. An antagonist trying to be good while still dealing with the antagonist impulses. And I dont mind that she sometimes had to have her wrong held up to her face. Some folks are in their box so far that they need to be called out on it. Whenever I think of Starlight Glimmer, I always think of G.I. Joe's Storm Shadow. In several runs in the comics, and even the DIC cartoon, Storm shadow worked on the Joe's team and even put his vendetta aside to work with Snake Eyes and his students. All the while getting mentions of distrust from the other Joes. Whenever he had to reaffirm his walk away from Cobra, he made a loud announcement that struck me as odd as a kid. As an adult, I see it as a reaffirmation. Not just to whoever was nay-saying at the time, but to hear himself say it as a mantra. Sometimes you have to keep telling yourself you can do it . Keep up the fun.
Starlight’s crazy magical talent actually makes sense when you stop and think about it. Her motivation for starting the equality cult was jealousy over losing her friend because he got his cutie mark in magical talent. Naturally, Starlight would probably have spent years (if not decades depending on her age) studying and perfecting magic to overcome her jealousy of Sunburst and view herself as his equal. Maybe she hoped that she could prove herself worthy of magic school as well so she could be reunited with him. When that failed, she was left with a bunch of earned magical talent and a whole lot of resentment towards cutie marks.
@@samuelkriz2761 Of course! I’ve seen all 9 seasons of FIM, The Movie, Best Gift Ever, Rainbow Roadtrip, all of the Equestria Girls movies & specials, A New Generation, and all of Make Your Mark.
I know I'm super late to this video, but I personally really like Starlight. She actually reminds me of my mom in the way that she has to be involved and in the way that she takes control. And kinda like me, she is scared of being rejected by others and struggles to read social situations. I have to say that I personally identify with Starlight more than anyone else in the main cast. Not that I've enslaved an entire town but you get the point.
After this video I think that Winter Wrap Up would be a good setup for Starlight to learn a new lesson even more. Not only to place her this time in a situation where it's possible to use magic, but she shouldn't, but also in the situation where she must work with other in order to achieve the goal.
Starligt reminds me of Mabel from Gravity Falls. The fans are in denial. They discuss whether he ruined the series or not because they like the character or not. When in reality, without it the series would not be as we know it.
Well, I still think alternating between ATF and these character/discussion videos is the way to go, but I did notice that your affects have improved remarkably. From the Amazon Archetype, and now here, you are really stepping it up.
Huh, interesting editorial there. It gave me hopes to see a better integrated Starlight instead of an OP Starlight. And a big plus to that plus number you added at the end. GO GO Power Ponies!!!
I personally love Starlie ever since her first appearance. She interested me a lot and she has become my favorite pony. I love her so much (snuggles Starlie)
i really like Starlight, wish they used her more often, maybe next season. i do agree i think it would be interesting to she her interact with the other mane five one by one, i think we could get some great character moments. also love how you combaired her to the Green Ranger, she was an OP villain that turned good, truly awesome. this was a great vid Sliver Quill.
This was a pleasure to watch! I think you made excellent points all around, both in your commendation and your criticisms. Starlight Glimmer has been one of my favorite characters these last two seasons; while we don't share personality types, I feel like her immense redemption and her honest and earnest attempts to be worthy of that redemption and to figure out how to BE a redeemed character (a near-lifetime of bitterness and isolation with one's own wrong ideals must leave a LOT of bad habits that are difficult to overcome) give her a sense of honest relatability. Moments like in the Maud Pie episode where she TRIES to break the truth to Pinkie nicely (and fails hilariously) are a perfect example of this; she's awkward and she knows it, but dang it all, SHE'S TRYING. And man if some of us can't relate to that frustration of really trying and still feeling like a goof-up sometimes. XD; I would agree that it would be nice to see Starlight interact with the "Remane 5" more. I think sometimes they still suffer a little of Season 1 syndrome, i.e. back when their personalities weren't as fully developed. (I get those moments in episodes like the Campfire Tales one where Rainbow Dash kept mentioning her awesomeness over and over AND OVER AND OVER.) Maybe having them interact more with Starlight will give the writers a fresh avenue to explore and develop their characters. After all, we had a LOT of fun with Maud and Pinkie in that one episode (even if Pinkie was super cringy-awkward). I think throwing Starlight into the mix has been a refreshing change, and I look forward to seeing what they do with her more in the future!
Count me as one who thinks she was introduced at simply too powerful a level. What is the point of being an alicorn if a unicorn can so easily match you? I also wonder where she learned the magic, Twilight spent years in Canterlot studying, we have no idea where Starlight learned her magic and she's still Twilight's equal if not superior. Other than that I like her best when she's with Trixie.
But it sometimes seems as if being made an alicorn has actually reduced Twilight's powers, not heightened them. From the start Starlight looked like she could handle Celistia and Luna all by herself and Twlight would barely make her work up a sweat.
I would agrre if we hadn't seen another unicorn (King Sombra) able (sure thx to dark magic) to force a far more superior alicorn (Celestia) as magical skill and knowledge than Twilight to a total attrition war in alternate timeline, able to slowly grinding Princess Alicorn Cadence 's barrier in Season 3 and beaten only by a McGuffin artefact and before by the two sisters (Celestia-Luna) along I Suppose the elements of Harmony, so the power level objection about Starlight Glimmer is void. Starlight Glimmer ' responsibilities were about her village (a remote location, not a partcular threat to Equestria, only awakened because the Mane 6 went to disturb it by Tree of Harmony), the time travel devastation were known only to Twilight and Spike I admit that I have seen only bits of Equestria on internet, but I haven't felt the opera so interesting (perhaps because I felt not so interesting the human counterpart of secondary characters as Luna and Celestia) and even if Sunset Shimmer is an interesting character, it lacks the ruthleness and scary real life references of Starlight Glimmer as villain, plus Starlight has improved as pony, but kept part of her moral gray behaviour..she is a Chaotic Good character (work for the good but screw the rules if they stop my personal idea of greater good) where Twilight and sunset are more lawful good (they obey and venerate Celestia as figure of authority and law) when is on the side of good guys, she doesn't need to steal power to reach her objective, only use them as tools to discard when not necessary for the task (Starswirl spell for example)
Good video SilverQuill. I like Starlight (She is my favorite MLP character) She is like Twilight's sibling if you ask me. Too bad she hasn't had any more important roles since season 8.
I do always enjoy the time Silver quill takes to explain to talk about a characters personality and arcs. I always felt that our hearths warming tail also worked as a way of showing someone else like starlight but just needed to be shown the error of her ways, after all it's almost spooky the amount of parallels you can make for snowfall frost and by extension Scrooge.
A few things. 1) wonderful video, as always. 2) Where you you get all these fact and references. You must have been a genius in school or something. 3) Believe it or not, it was watching your video's that actually got me into the show in the first place. So, thank you.
So far she has, she's interacted more with the other mane six fame and misfortune in particular really gave us a chance to see exactly how protective she is of them.
It's nice to see someone approach Starlight's character with an unbiased review. Sunset will still be my favorite "reformed villain" but Starlight's development has warmed me up to her as well. Good on you Miss Sparkle, you've done a marvelous job with this one. And thank you Silver for being a genuinely entertaining reviewer and helping make the brony community a fine place to be.
Yeah seriously. I was fine with putting the focus on Starlight for the finale since it was finishing her charachter arc of forgiving herself. We still have our main heroes and they had plenty to do in the premire of season 6 so no I don't think she's overshadowing them.
Thank you for making a video explaining Starlight character and how she is an important addition to the show and not a sunset 2.0 o a new twilight which many people believe and it is insane! She is a very good character with her very own interesting and overall unique personality that this show needed. I am very pleased to say that all the points you made were exact and that she needs to interact more with the other mane 5 excluding twilight is something i really wish to see in season 7 ;)
i was iffy on starlight in season 6 but i loved every moment of her in season 7 and 8. especially when they brought back the pillars, she had so many good moments in that 2 parter
I like Starlight well enough. I enjoy the way she tackles problems, even though they are not always morally correct. I wish Sunset would pop back into Equestria and hang out with Starlight for an episode. The dynamic could be very interesting.
I would definitely want to see that potentially in the upcoming special (which could small theory explain the equestria girls look we got of her if she or her Canterlot High counterpart hasn't been slated for EQ 5 yet), but oh can I imagine the hate train steaming into the station with that.
Well she will be in a special coming up, and Starlight's going to be doing exactly that Indigo in that special from what I've seen from leaks- popping back into Equestria and hanging out but then heading back to the "human" world for a bit. So.....possible canon??
I have to say, being someone who's enjoyed the show right from the start back at the formation of the fandom and gotten to love the manes across the last 9 years, Starlight is far and beyond my favourite addition to the latter half of the show. She's a delight every time I see her
0:26 You taking notes, Mashima?! I definitely think seeing Starlight just live her life is the next big step and I'm sure we'll get little bits of that in season 7 now that Starlight's no longer Twilight's student.
7:39 'Accidentally'? That was her intent! She did that to breeze through her friendship lessons! There was nothing accidental about what she did, there!
True. It was her intention, but all the events after that attempt were not what she wanted. They were accidents because I did not expect such serious results.
Silver, I’m glad that you can point out the good things about Starlight. Because I personally find it hard to find people who ACTUALLY LIKE Starlight. I know everyone has a right to their opinion whatever it may be, but I’m just glad that you have a positive opinion about her.
"Introducing a character with so much power can feel like a shortcut towards attention" Then please tell me why everyone loves Discord and no one ever throws this criticism at him even though he's, like, THE most powerful character in the show AND his power had no explanation? Hypocrisy much? (I don't hate Discord btw)
I think it's because Discord started as an antagonist. A fun antagonist who enjoyed messing with the ponies. We tend to be more forgiving of a villain's power levels because it's meant to challenge our leads. That's also why many protested Discord's reformation.
+MLP-Silver-Quill What?! Hello! last time I checked, Starlight started as an antagonist, too :/ Plus, Discord did way worse things and for what? For FUN! Say what you want about Starlight's backstory, at least she had an actual motivation and wasn't a villain just for the heck of it.
Yes, and at that point we loved her. But when Discord was introduced as a reocurring character, the focus wasn't on how better he was than everybody. In fact, it showed a lot of his weaknesses. The focus was on him as a character. MLP's current state is constantly showing us Starlight's strengths and abilities. Yes we get a view of some of her weaknesses and Personality too, but her strengths showings vastly outweigh them.
And I agree with you on that, good sir. It's just that to some people, they felt that the motivation wasn't, mature of her, forgetting that it was something that happened in her childhood and, to some people, losing a friend is not as easy as just moving on. Sometimes it ends up being stuck with you and it germinates and makes you do things you might never get to regret. Sure, to outsiders, it makes her look like a brat, but then again, what did we really expected from a show about friendship worshipping candy colored mini-horses? Something out of final fantasy? Genine REALISUM in a children's cartoon? A mature tragity involving death? Like you said, Discord was forgiven for doing worse things, Luna was forgiven for worse things, and Tempest was basicly forgiven for being a race traitor. The main overall problem is that the detracters to Starlight were expecting a realistic scenario of Starlight being treated like a Chrono-Terrorest and basicly getting a harsh sentence in a world that strifes in friendship and forgiveness. And that the show does albeitly have an earnestly shrinking villain roster. Well, to that I say, hey, at least be glad she wasn't reformed Deu Ex Machina like with Luna and Sunset, cause sometimes, we forget that we're watching show tecnecally not meant to be viewed by us, I mean, alchourse someone who screwed up as epicly as Starlight did is gonna be treated with kid gloves in a show that encourages forgiveness and compassion and friendship, I mean, I wouldn't call that a show that okays the prospect of being like our crappy world.
Simple: He is not a pony and his loyalty to the mane 6 is much more in question. He is a chaotic neutral rather than a reliable ally which makes his powerlevel seem appealing because you are never sure if it's going to be used to help or hurt the mane 6.
The fact that she had to be told what she did wrong was a good way of showing how not everyone gets it right away. Sometimes you have to be told what you did wrong in order to fix it. With some people you end up making it worse by not telling them what they did wrong, because if they don't know they'll fall into the thought of "well if I can't figure it out, clearly I did nothing wrong and you're just over reacting." And never see the error of their ways and will end up doing it all over again. Sometimes a good teach and friend has to point out what is obvious to everyone else but not so obvious to the one doing wrong. .....I hope that was coherent.
My big problem with Starlight is how much of the show's focus she has taken. The season 7 premiere will be the fifth consecutive season bookend focusing on her. We want to see the Mane Six battle a new villain; not watch the Starlight Glimmer show yet again. It reminds one of Scrappy Doo: a character introduced to boost ratings who then proceeds to dominate the show and steal focus from the beloved main characters.
In all honesty, if it helps, the premere was more of a aftermath of the previous finale then pretty much a repeat of what I assume the writers felt that the same trend seasons prior was starting to get old. But hey, they're more or less bring the trend back in Season 8 and ended 7 with a villain problem.
Honestly I think most of her hate comes from people who don't understand her. I heard her be called a Mary sue. But they throw the term around without knowing what it means. Definition: "A Mary Sue is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character, a young or low-rank person who saves the day through unrealistic abilities. Often this character is recognized as an author insert or wish-fulfillment." Starlight does not fit that definition. She is far from perfect.
she fits that description perfectly. maybe not in terms of character, but in terms of physical attributes and abilities, shes flawless. shes also made a hero for NO reason. i mean, the writers had to make 99.9% of the population of equestria get captured just so she can be the hero of the season 6 finale. shes a mary sue on steroids
William Duffy I guess you think Rainbow dash is a mary sue because of her speed, besides it was technically her and thorax that saved the day. Also she was getting smacked around by Chrysalis and remember she was a villian before, villians are ment to be all powerful. What do you want her to loose that magic after she turned good?
William Duffy Well, a character is much more than just their abilities. That's why they're called PERSONALITY flaws. She may be extremely powerful, but she's also impulsive with countless crippling insecurities and a poor understanding of empathy. And these character traits aren't just lip-service, they severely impact her decisions as well as the plot.
That overpowered nature really is a big no-no for many people. I think if they had powered Starlight down and made her magical power formidable but at the same level as unicorn Twilight people would have accepted it far easier.
marinus18 I personally call it the Superman syndrome. The most powerful character is seemingly the most hated. Only focusing on the abilities while ignoring the character
Cartoon logic for the WIN! this was sweet, thx Silver, and I thank you for giving Starlight some love, I personally Love her character and felt her reformation, while rushed in one particular part, was still legit and strong (look to Luffyiscool's reaction to the season 5 finale to see my reasons for that) Now comes the wait for season 7, I've noticed the trailers are up but I ain't touching them with a ten foot pole, I want to be as spoiler free as...... (realizes current location) I'M COMMANDER CRITIC GOTTA GO!!!!!!
My biggest issue with Starlight is how her reformation was done. IT WAS POORLY EXECUTED. The fact that her reasoning behind setting up a pseudo-Marxist cult was because her friend got her mark before her. Thats absolutely ridiculous! A point to note that her childhood is very similar to Apple Bloom, (I am referring to Call of the Cutie episode S1 E12). Apple Bloom was more open to making friends unlike Starlight who closed her self of immediately. The fact she set up a no cutie mark society, meant she had ideology. The famous phrase *you cannot kill an ideology*. In Season 5 finale, in the future that looked like a wasteland, Starlight showed that she was not prepared to give up her own ways and ideals. Even when every bit of life is dead/not existence, Starlight would not change her motivations. Twilight was not going to convince her own mind on what she was doing was wrong. It wasn't until Twilight spoke so magical words and the running time of show was coming to an end that she was reformed. Just like that, in a matter of seconds, from villain to good. I apologise if this coming of as (an aggressive) rant, but these are my own thoughts. I did like the role she played in Season 6 finale, but previous episodes I have found it hard to like her.
Starlight's story would have been so much better and more believable if she had faced some sort of consequence for what she did. At least Sunset Shimmer had to literally rebuild the school she destroyed. All Starlight had to do was apologize and then frolick around with the mane 6.
Starlight basically had to do the equivalent of going to anger management after having dangerous outbursts. She definitely didn't sound enthusiastic about some of the friendship lessons she had to do, but she did them anyway leading to becoming a better "person." That sounds much more effective then a typical punishment.
Agreed, could be an area of contempt with the people that aren't a big Glimmy fan. And yeah, RynKen, she basically had to go through anger management. If I had to use a Sunset comparison, Glimmy feels early mid to early end of Rainbow Rocks- has worked her way up "from the bottom" but hasn't really figured out who she is,
There was consequence, it just came in the form of a massive guilt complex for her actions, the mane six forgave her but she never forgave herself during season 6 until the end.
What I find ironic about Starlight is that people complain about her having too much screen time. Yet, if they hadn't made episodes about her and had done somepony in the Mane 6 instead people would complaining she doesn't have any character development. Wow, DHX and Hasbro cannot win. ~ Mintstar
That's a good question. A reason I think they put her in the Luna and Celestia episode in Season 7. I saw a lot of character growth in that episode for Starlight (Luna and Celestia too) The writers also knew EVERYBODY would watch because it's the episode everyone's been wanting since season 1. ~ Mintstar
jaqwon14 Yep, but it worked and it was actually a good episode. It helped Starlight to know that sometimes your first gut feeling is the best thing you shoud do no matter what peole think. Of course there was also more of a common sibling relationship between Luna and Celestia. ~Rockfeather
Rock Mint Swirl Still that was a fucking Risky move putting in a controversial character in a episode that the fandom has been wanting to see since DAY ONE
jaqwon14 I wasn't saying it wasn't risky, considering how many people do hate Starlight. But, I think it might have made some people hate her a little less or mabye some even started to like her. ~Rockfeather
At the end, the only thing I could think of was, "Wait, Silver didn't blow up.... wait, the reentry thing." Great video, though. Definitely what I hope for Starlight.
Starlight’s best moment so far?
School daze, episode 2.
“I’m not gonna cheer you up, im gonna tell you what you did wrong.
You gave up too quickly.
...you didn’t give up on me, so why not for this?”
This is by far, the best starlight moment IMO.
The student retaught the teacher what the teacher taught her. She was the highlight of the ep, hands down.
Her slapping the EEA book, cutting twilight off actually shook me.
I'd like to see that to...=}
That would be great to be able to see Starlight and Fluttershy hang out more. XD.
yeah! Fluttershy is the most decieving but the kindest friend! :) #fluttershybestie
Oh, I didn't even see that! I'm going to have to look for that next time I watch it.
I'm considering that she seems to like helping villains; like Discord.
Ha! You gotten everyone of the mane six and starlight to face palm. Now you only need the princesses including flurry heart, the villains if you haven't already, discord, cmc, the other world leaders, and the ultimate goal Larson and Faust!
Don't for get sunset!
Dude, that's a stretch.
Oh, thank you!
MoonShadowWolfe good analysis
Starlight's outrage toward Discord/Accord's actions in issues 50 and 51 is also a testament to how much she's changed.
I still think Starlight would have been perfect as a reoccurring villain. She deeply opposes Twilight's mentality yet is not too powerful. Someone like Discord could never have been a reoccurring villain as him being free and evil is a catastrophe.
THIS SO MUCH
I'm so torn in my waifu decision.
heads: starlight glimmer
tails: sunset shimmer
Damnit, my coin fell down the storm drain.
which one do you prefer more? human or pony?
Umm, there was an Equestrian Girls movie where Starlight went through the portal, soooooooo, moot point there.
I personally prefer a certain Kirin
Well then, the storm drain has spoken, your waifu shall be tempest.
I'll go with both of those waifu ponies in my decision
I think that the point of Starlight is to show that even though you have a lot of power, you might not be the perfect person personality and decision wise. She has control over her powers but still she sometimes doesn't know when and for what to use them.

Did you saw season 5 of mlp?
^ This guy gets it!
Could even start the episode with Starlight pushing herself too hard to prove herself, leading to Twilight telling her she doesn't have to keep making up for the past since everyone's already forgiven her-
Starlight: But I still haven't forgiven myself...
They already do a "kind of that"... Season 6 Finale.
yeah! Luna really helps, which she could help me though... #needhelpindreams
Your skill as a writer (helped by your deadpan line delivery) never fails to bring a smile to my face. It goes without saying that you also make me think.
Love Starlight a lot! >< From the very first episode she was in. now i love her even more and can see myself in her! :D It's pretty encouraging seeing her success in her 'friendship lessons' even if she struggles at first
Nice job on the video on her.

You know I don't think chrayleid thought her plan through bescude now the town would be in panic
I found that power rangers comparison very appropriate to get the point across. This was a great break down of where her character was, where she is now and where she could go in the future depending on if she's put into more normal circumstances with other characters to really expand on her personality more. Great video!
Somehow. and I don't know how. you make these pastel ponies somehow relatable and you put logic in these little cartoons. that is very admirable.
Yes, that is true. There is a certain structure in MLP. With its twists and others. Simply epic.
Still waiting on that Cadence After the Fact. You seem to love to skip over her at every possible turn.
She's a rather difficult pony to talk about. She has an ability to be something more, but the writers haven't really given her an opportunity.
Given his views on her, likely due to him simply not liking her or having anything positive to say, and not wanting to make a video just bashing her, given he tries to make these celebrations of what makes a character great.
He's already done that; it's titled "After the Fact: Happily Ever After".
No, that was a look at a trope associated with them, using them as object lessons and examples, not a look at the character herself.

I was stuck in this numb state where I didn't want nor need to cry yet I could bring myself to truly be happy.
I love your cartoon logic Silver
Awesome mentioning of the power ranger concept. never would I have thought that Starlight Glimmer would be consider 6th ranger theme. Just brilliant.
Starlight Glimmer is in the end like Grimlock from Transformer G1 , an uber powerful character (brawn for the T-rex autobots, magic for Glim Glam) able to go toe to toe with main characters and villains, used when sh*t hit the fan (like all autobots paralysed during episode Rise of Atlantis or the Season 6 finale for MLP or Royal Problem arises), but lacking some long term planning about their actions (like for Grimlock not considering that if Earth is destroyed, then he will too or for Starlight the butterfly effect from time travel or her mind control magic spell)
That's why writers use her when they want to surpass a 'Godzilla' 's treshold about magic disasters amd add more fun or epicness to the show (plus her latent wish to command by offering even as heroine character hint and tips about what her guts to other members of the cast using the sledgehammer approach, where as villain was more an emotion manipulative chessmaster like Cozy Glow today)
Her main sin for fandom is her too quick forgive from Mane 6 and her Town' fellows in Season 5 finale (and about keeping contacts with Sunburst we have deduced the acceptable explanation that he became a near shut in after being expelled from Magic gifter unicorn School for his lacking about 'operative' magic), but present days she is used also to interact with more secondary characters (buy our toys) and having a sarcastic dry benevolent humour about some clichè of the show like songs, Twiligh' speeches and moral lessons.
Thank you Silver you get Starlight so many just dismiss her say they hate her I hope this will give them something to think about.
i get her too, truelly

Sorry.
Yeah me too i liked her revenge arc too, i agree with you it exacly showed how powerful and skilled she is/was and that’s why she is my favourite villain
did you saw season 5??
Granted Starlight is not a fav character overall, but you pointed out a
aspect I love. An antagonist trying to be good while still dealing with
the antagonist impulses. And I dont mind that she sometimes had to
have her wrong held up to her face. Some folks are in their box so far
that they need to be called out on it.
I agree with this.
I don't know what's funnier: Someone giving Silver Quill the job of being emotionally supportive, or the fact that he's really good at it.
The charator, not the actor.
I still didn't like Starlight after two seasons but you've convinced me to give her another chance. Stay awesome my friend.

Ah, Starlight...Such a dangerous topic to talk about in this fandom.

It's like talking to Star Wars fans about the Disney trilogy.
Starligt reminds me of Mabel from Gravity Falls. The fans are in denial. They discuss whether he ruined the series or not because they like the character or not.
When in reality, without it the series would not be as we know it.
@@thelionalex1 The only difference is that Mabel was a part of Gravity Falls from the first episode. Otherwise, that's an interesting perspective.

This was a pleasure to watch! I think you made excellent points all around, both in your commendation and your criticisms. Starlight Glimmer has been one of my favorite characters these last two seasons; while we don't share personality types, I feel like her immense redemption and her honest and earnest attempts to be worthy of that redemption and to figure out how to BE a redeemed character (a near-lifetime of bitterness and isolation with one's own wrong ideals must leave a LOT of bad habits that are difficult to overcome) give her a sense of honest relatability. Moments like in the Maud Pie episode where she TRIES to break the truth to Pinkie nicely (and fails hilariously) are a perfect example of this; she's awkward and she knows it, but dang it all, SHE'S TRYING. And man if some of us can't relate to that frustration of really trying and still feeling like a goof-up sometimes. XD;
I would agree that it would be nice to see Starlight interact with the "Remane 5" more.
Starlight Glimmer ' responsibilities were about her village (a remote location, not a partcular threat to Equestria, only awakened because the Mane 6 went to disturb it by Tree of Harmony), the time travel devastation were known only to Twilight and Spike
I admit that I have seen only bits of Equestria on internet, but I haven't felt the opera so interesting (perhaps because I felt not so interesting the human counterpart of secondary characters as Luna and Celestia) and even if Sunset Shimmer is an interesting character, it lacks the ruthleness and scary real life references of Starlight Glimmer as villain, plus Starlight has improved as pony, but kept part of her moral gray behaviour..she is a Chaotic Good character (work for the good but screw the rules if they stop my personal idea of greater good) where Twilight and sunset are more lawful good (they obey and venerate Celestia as figure of authority and law) when is on the side of good guys, she doesn't need to steal power to reach her objective, only use them as tools to discard when not necessary for the task (Starswirl spell for example)
did you saw season 5??
@@samuelkriz2761 Not yet, I lost cable about that time.
1:42 I’m more disturbed that he kept count than anything else.
Good video SilverQuill.
I like Starlight
(She is my favorite MLP character)
She is like Twilight's sibling if you ask me.
Too bad she hasn't had any more important roles since season 8.
Me too i like her too
She is my favourite villain
did you saw season 5??
I do always enjoy the time Silver quill takes to explain to talk about a characters personality and arcs. I always felt that our hearths warming tail also worked as a way of showing someone else like starlight but just needed to be shown the error of her ways, after all it's almost spooky the amount of parallels you can make for snowfall frost and by extension Scrooge.
when watching this I realized something of great importance...
starlight has some big hair!
It also seems to have changed slightly again
A few things.
1) wonderful video, as always.
2) Where you you get all these fact and references. You must have been a genius in school or something.
3) Believe it or not, it was watching your video's that actually got me into the show in the first place. So, thank you.
I really like Starlight, I'm honestly hoping she'll be more involved this next upcoming season.
So far she has, she's interacted more with the other mane six fame and misfortune in particular really gave us a chance to see exactly how protective she is of them.
Did you saw season 5 of mlp?
@@samuelkriz2761 Yep, I saw everything. All the way from season 1 to season 9, as well as every movie and special.
@@sonicgen20 did you then saw duel between starlight and twilight?
@@samuelkriz2761 Yeah, When I say I saw everything, I mean I saw everything.
Starlight stole season 6 away? I'm surprised that complaint exists since she wasn't really in it :/
Yeah seriously. I was fine with putting the focus on Starlight for the finale since it was finishing her charachter arc of forgiving herself. We still have our main heroes and they had plenty to do in the premire of season 6 so no I don't think she's overshadowing them.
Agreed
She's only been in 3 episodes (excluding the premire and finale)
Thank you for making a video explaining Starlight character and how she is an important addition to the show and not a sunset 2.0 o a new twilight which many people believe and it is insane! She is a very good character with her very own interesting and overall unique personality that this show needed. I am very pleased to say that all the points you made were exact and that she needs to interact more with the other mane 5 excluding twilight is something i really wish to see in season 7 ;)
What if u make a philosophy book on mlp?
Sell me a copy! Now!
I'd buy one.
Shut up and Take my Bits!
That would be great; someone should get on that.
shut up and take my money!!!!!
i was iffy on starlight in season 6 but i loved every moment of her in season 7 and 8. especially when they brought back the pillars, she had so many good moments in that 2 parter
She's a delight every time I see her
I agree
She is my favourite villain
Did you saw season 5 of mlp?
I LOVE Starlight!
0:26 You taking notes, Mashima?!
I definitely think seeing Starlight just live her life is the next big step and I'm sure we'll get little bits of that in season 7 now that Starlight's no longer Twilight's student.
you are my favorite Hippogriff
mine too!
It's true ♥
I always enjoy your unique and surprisingly thoughtful insights.
I do also have positive opinion on her
Silver mentions something postive about Starlight.
Jerry Peet : TRIGGERED.
owencrean1 indeed
even I hate her
That's LILY Peet.
Awesomo who cares?
I loved the analysis he made
Wow, silverquill, wow. You spoke all those thoughts i could never gather in my tonge myself. That's why you're the best brony analist.
"Introducing a character with so much power can feel like a shortcut towards attention"
Then please tell me why everyone loves Discord and no one ever throws this criticism at him even though he's, like, THE most powerful character in the show AND his power had no explanation? Hypocrisy much? (I don't hate Discord btw)
I think it's because Discord started as an antagonist. A fun antagonist who enjoyed messing with the ponies.
We tend to be more forgiving of a villain's power levels because it's meant to challenge our leads. That's also why many protested Discord's reformation.
+MLP-Silver-Quill
What?! Hello! last time I checked, Starlight started as an antagonist, too :/ Plus, Discord did way worse things and for what?
Interesting discussion on Starlight, I'm intrigued to see what happens next for her in season 7 ^^ And great use of power rangers knowledge ^^
Power rangers is always welcome
Wha?! Using a Power Rangers/Super Sentai allegory to explain an MLP character?!
...I approve.
Um the season 7 premire was more focused on Twilight then it was on Starlight.
In all honesty, if it helps, the premere was more of a aftermath of the previous finale then pretty much a repeat of what I assume the writers felt that the same trend seasons prior was starting to get old. But hey, they're more or less bring the trend back in Season 8 and ended 7 with a villain problem.
It focuses more on twi and Celestia's relationship more
That mentioning of MBTI made me so happy! ^_^
When are you gonna do another review
Pop Lily yeah
Have to join this bandwagon. I like these side-bits, but a new review would be nice
Sometimes I forget Silver is a Sentai fan, so I get a pure sense of excitement every time he brings it up.
I forever say Sunset will always be the 7th ranger
Silver Ouill slapstick never stops being funny!
Often this character is recognized as an author insert or wish-fulfillment."
Starlight does not fit that definition.
Uses the 6th ranger term and a MMPR instrumental. Has the sentai names in credits. Well played you charming condor.
I'm largely indifferent to Starlight -- neither really pro or con. But I really, really like Starlight and Trixie's interaction.
These character analysis episodes are so sweet!
“You’re using magic to accomplish something logical, while I operate on cartoon logic.”
So...
You’re Pinkie pie?
Cartoon logic for the WIN!
this was sweet, thx Silver, and I thank you for giving Starlight some love, I personally Love her character and felt her reformation, while rushed in one particular part, was still legit and strong (look to Luffyiscool's reaction to the season 5 finale to see my reasons for that)
Now comes the wait for season 7, I've noticed the trailers are up but I ain't touching them with a ten foot pole, I want to be as spoiler free as...... (realizes current location) I'M COMMANDER CRITIC GOTTA GO!!!!!!
Silver knowing you, shouldn't you have been a red shirt and not a yellow shirt?
The ones from season 1 though, they suit you.
silver quill. bringing stalking to a whole new level with cartoon logic =D
I think starlight would be good with AJ in an episode. That seem like that could learn from each other, both being stubborn and all.
I was thinking the same thing!
Aj can pair up with anyone of the main characters and be a good fit.
Tbh i wanna see her interact with fluttershy
Very nicely done I always enjoy your analyzing videos.
I did like the role she played in Season 6 finale, but previous episodes I have found it hard to like her.
awesome background music. wonder why it's no longer online anywhere.
+RedfurredPikachu
But guilt complex isn't punishment because it is internal.
Yeah, having to deal with anxieties issues for months is a piece of cake!
Sunset is a commander as well, but she does not let doubts and guilt get in the way of her judgement.
~ Mintstar
Rock Mint Swirl aka it was a cheap tactic to get us to watch the episode
jaqwon14 Yep, but it worked and it was actually a good episode.
At the end, the only thing I could think of was, "Wait, Silver didn't blow up.... wait, the reentry thing."
Great video, though. Definitely what I hope for Starlight.
