BSA Goldstar Revisited | Extended Riding Impressions | Still the Bike for Everyone?

  • If you've been watching the BSA situation, you will know that after a long and troubled gestation, the bikes finally rolled out about 6 months ago. If you've been watching my channel, you will know that I've had two attempts so far at getting a decent impression of this bike. On the first, the weather was too cold with ice and snow to ride it. On the second, I was about fifteen minutes out when a bolt came off which loosened the rear footrest and the exhaust was left with only one support. So, I limped back to the dealers frustrated with only a partial review. Adding insult to injury, my sound quality was poor which many viewers commented upon. This time, weather was decent, the machine in good fettle and my video and sound quality a league above what they had been. Please watch to the end as I pretty comprehensively comment upon the riding experience. DON'T watch however if you want all the facts and figures. Plenty of other reviews do that.

I've test today after 1 day of obtaining the A2 license... its a wild horse and I just love it.
It moves incredibly well for its weight, comfortable and really, really fun.
My worse flaw is that the mirrors are imposible to use at 100+ kmh.

I'm trying to decide between the BSA, RE Interceptor, or Guzzi V7. The new BSA Shadow Black edition at £5,999 is very tempting and looked great in the flesh at the NEC last year. The BSA also felt more substantial than the Interceptor, and there's something special about that big single in a sea of twins. The Rotax motor is a well-proven unit, and BSA now gives a 4 year warranty. Interested to hear how you feel the BSA compares to the V7, as that's a bike with a genuine history and loads of character which is appealing in itself.

I've got a RE Continental GT which I'm well pleased with and I'd get a Gold Star and be equally as happy based on my first inspection at the Stafford show today.
Like yourself I find that radiator people whine about as being unobtrusive in the metal/plastic.
    It's a good looking machine.
My singular objection to this machine is they called it Gold Star.
I think that they should've used a less iconic name then after establishing themselves release a mind blower using the Goldie name.
    Great review. Ta

I enjoyed watching this one CC, or ist that KK ?
I quite like the BSA myself but since they are not available in Europe and even when they are, I dread to think how poor the dealer support in Spain will be, I can't see myself getting one.
I think I need to see the brand well established in Spain before I could even consider buying a BSA. I could be in the market for the Scrambler they showed back in the day. I could see that being an on/off road toy and a keeper. But there's no point in me buying one until the dealer network here is established and stable. As you no doubt know, dealers come and go. You may have one within an hour of home now but in the next 12 months he could go bust and suddenly you're looking at a six hour round trip for every service ! You need to have plenty of dealers around to have a fair level of security of LOCAL dealer support. I'm guessing that it will be many years before we reach that level in Spain.
Apart from its nostalgic looks, the BSA just strikes me as competent but nothing special. I'm sure that I'd enjoy owning one but somehow I expected a little bit more.
If RE ever bring out a larger single, I think that would probably be my first choice. Just a safer bet, with their well established reputation and dealer network over here.
    Cheers CC/KK

'Riding style'?? Is poor road positioning a style? BSAs demise was the Managements complacency and refusal to invest in new ideas (and machinery) from engineers, preferring to employ marketting executives in Umberslade Hall, from outside the sport instead.

    Morning CMD
I find my legacy extremely nice to ride and have no problems with it and find the indicator flasher on the display absolutely fine 😊😊
No problems on motorways neither I’ve done 1250 miles so far and love it 😍
The usb socket doesn’t bother me as I have other bikes these minor issues don’t bother me but some people only have the one and they intend to make it their own😊
The headlamp is spot on I don’t understand why people want to change it it’s absolutely fine 😊😊
Just a point to anyone the exhaust colour with it being stainless does change colour but with Silvio auto sol it comes straight off in seconds 😊😊
At the end of the day you get what you pay for … my advice is don’t hesitate if you want one get one!
How are you finding the DJI camera ?

BSA seem to be milking the brand name, but not delivering the product. Why are the BSA's single cylinders? The Gold Star A10 500cc and the A65 650cc were twins. So as a "retro bike" BSA do not make sense. Suspect that the Indian makers were not up to making twins. Royal Enfield have a complete range of retro bikes.

You need to study history a little more...The Rocket Gold Star (A10) was a 650 not a 500 and BSA's most successful single in competition and al;so the top of the range single cylinder road bike was?..Oh yes, the Gold Star.....

As a GoldStar owner myself it does nark me when people compare it to a twin, how can you compare a twin engine to a single, compare it to another 650 single, is there one. As a retired driving instructor I've got to say adjusting your mirrors on the fly isn't safe or sensible, hope any learner's weren't watching your attempt to do so.

Save your money and just buy a pair of BSA tank badges and glue them to whatever bike you want to. Fake pathetic phoney pretender with plastic crap all over the motor trying to make it seem like something it's not. Plastic fenders on such an expensive motorcycle? 650& Gold Star are a controdiction in terms. Simply ridiculous price. Questionable engine quality in the long run. It's heavy slow , and expensive. It doesn't have any of the excitement of the original. Other than good looks from 3 sides (and a disaster from the 4th.) It sounds like an old Cushman scooter. It sounds like it's farting.

Sounds nice. It's not a 60.s bike and you can't expect them to sound like a 60.s bike. Last bike I rode that sounded like farting was 1200gs. Awful when revved hard. But they sound OK at low revs 😂
