The Jerry Garcia - Bob Dylan bromance is one for the ages. Mutual respect and a spiritual connection that we can see here, expressed musically and which, in doing so, takes us along for this timeless, magical journey. I love how Jerry's eyebrows raise here and there along with a little nod as he feels the song flowing through him (love the slightly more upbeat tempo!), as he steps away from the mic when entering into his solo zone, how he just absolutely digs this song and the joy he has in playing it, the grace he always shows to fellow musicians when it's their turn to shine a bit...all of it, effortless, natural. Most of all, I love how he really was having a good time here. I've watched this countless times but recently returned to view it because it's probably my favorite version of all (including Dylan!) and this time I had to leave a comment.
You nailed it Audrey - you covered everything from the eyebrows and head bobs to the stepping back for the solos and the gracious rapport accorded to others. I return to this every so often just to see Jerry vibing, such a pleasure. Love his expressions. He was one of a kind. Thanks for sharing your thoughts so we could relate.
Did Jerry's voice ever sound better than this? And the guitar playing is first-rate, too. This is a powerful version of one of Dylan's most powerful songs.
To me he understood that perfection isn't the absence of imperfection about as well as anyone. Those artists always bring the most joy. Playing the correct notes all the time is vastly overrated.
This Tangled Up in Blue is from 7/26/80, but it’s from Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ. You can hear the echo of the hall as well. The Capitol Theater, Passaic NJ show was 3/1/80.
This is arguably the best this song (not Garcia or Hunter) was ever performed. This was about the time Garcia peaked. 77-80. Everything he did during this period was drug fueled. It was incredible music but man did he die before his time because of it.
Damn, The Capitol Theater always got the best shows, and had the good foresight to video them. Thank You for that. This was about six week before I saw the Grateful Dead for the first time, up in Maine. Nothing better than ol' Jerry on his "Tiger" guitar.
I had been to the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ countless times in the late 70s - 80s, living a mere 20 minute drive away for most of that time. Such an awesome venue, RIP. It was the first venue of any size I went to that had video screens on either side of the stage. I wondered at the time if they were merely projecting what they were shooting or if they were also recording the content. Well, when UA-cam first came to be, during my hours of immersion and fascination exploring this new tech way of accessing an ever expanding variety of recordings of varying quality and relevance, I finally encountered a video posting of a song from a performance at the Capitol (don't recall what song it was) and my heart skipped a beat. I just thought, "OMG! They DID record and save the videos! What a tremendous and historic archive they're sitting on!" And over the years, so much has been uploaded from this legendary venue. And more recently, many have taken it upon themselves to do the painstaking endeavor to digitally restore and remaster these valuable relics from the infancy of this consumer technology. Certainly something for the Plus + column in my love/hate relationship with the Internet and social media, lol
Yes it is. I don't even think they hit the Capitol during the Summer which are as good as the spring tour shows if not better.7-24 through 7-26-80 is some of favorite from the year besides 2-28 through 3-8-80.
I live in a place that has a pool, nice , but it turns in to a free for all , sounds good, ya no, the pool is closed, they have to clean it. I live here I pay ,,
One of the best years to see them
RIP Jerry Garcia

Well said !!
Jerry was a player, not really a writer, that is why he and Dylan make such a good pairing
@@iamAwesomo1994 feel it wish theynwoulda laid it down in studio

I bow to you good sir..

you cannot get better music.
This song is a modern epic tale on the level of The Grapes of Wrath. The imagery and emotion are second to none
Few others can cover this song, f'ing AWESOME...viva Jeryy...el maestro...
this is please play this at my funeral music
Best version of tangled up I've encountered
Did you see the one from Mountain View with Melvin Seals and the girls and the absolutely rocket crescendo in that one?

What a great version of this song.
Absolutely amazing

That smile at the end of the first verse @ 1:00 … Man, was he on that night??!! This is excellent
I like this lineup with Ozzie on keyboards and the drummer. I think it's Jonathan "something " Starting to realize this show is one of the greats.
The sound of the keys from this player and this era just annoy the fu©k outta me. The whirring and pitch variations offend my senses. Give me some Keith Godchaux, Nicky Hopkins, Melvin Seals...anybody without a pitch +/- wheel!

Yeah the East Coast always ended up with the best shows. Had the best dope.

The outro is just savage. Aural heart surgery. Love ya' Jerry.
Superb

Jerry came to play!
The Master.
Thank you
Killer crowd
underrated comment. quiet, enthusiastic at the right times, and appreciative of what they were witnessing.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Pretty sure this date was at asbury park NJ
Can I ask those more knowledgeable than I .. who is the keyboardist on this version.
Ozzie Allers I think. I know he was there at some point in 1980.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💯
isn’t 7/26/80 live at Asbury Park?

You're correct-good call. Capital was early March. Amazing Midnight Moonlight from that one too.
¿Who is on the keyboard 🎹?
@@benjaminjones4914 Ozzie Ahlers who also played in Van Morrison's band in the early 70s.
Firing on all cylinders
5th time I've watched this in a day.
I thought I saw flames coming through the speakers!
7/2/6/80 was Asbury Park not Capitol Theater
Ozzie Aylers had a cool keyboard sound.
Fender Rhodes?
😮
