@Jamel_AKA_Jamal I'm sharing these lyrics with you because when it came up on my playlist this afternoon while I was ironing clothes you came to my mind. This night was actually supposed to be a Grateful Dead show but Brent Midland died so those who didn't want a refund were able to use their Grateful Dead tickets for the show. I was there and my friends from my town in Thousand Oaks (Southern California) asked me if I wanted to go with them on the Eastern tour. The next venue was going to be out that way. (The first shows with the new keyboardist Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby) I had never been to the East coast for a Grateful Dead show and I told them I would think about it. Then during the show JGB busted out Stop That Train, the Peter Tosh cover. "Stop that train I'm leaving! Stop that train I'm leaving! And it won't be too long whether I'm right or wrong." That settled it. I didn't return to So Cal but went on my first Eastern tour. It was great! I saw Melvin with JGB last year just before COVID kicked in!!! So much fun, can’t wait for them to start touring again! Melvin did a live show a couple of months ago as a live UA-cam event I watched!!! 🎶🎼🎵👌👍✌️😎
JGB is very different than the Dead. They are both awesome. When things open up you can still see today’s version of JGB with John K playing Jerry’s part. They are in a word Awesome. Not Jerry but a great show non-the-less.
Oh man. Thank you so much Jamal. This brings tears to my eyes. I saw the Dead so many times, but catching JGB at the Stone (Palo Alto usually, or Berkeley) was so special. Beyond words. I watched Jackie and Gloria harmonize from just feet away. My favorite bassist was always John Kahn. The memories hurt. But I thank god for for them. Thank you again. Truly.
Had a college friend who was a true Dead Head. They encouraged taping of their performances and my friend had over 50 live Dead tapes. They were the true definition of a "Jam" band.
Jerry Jerry Jerry all spiraling around him, in the dead it was every man from himself. In the JGB he was the bottom of the funnel or the top of the pyramid, like a snake eating its tail. Jerry had the magic and shared it always with everyone, it was a true gift to experience it live

Performances by this version of JERRY Garcia Band, which lineup was more than a decade, was affectionately referred to as Jerry Church, and Gloria, Jackie and Melvin all had backgrounds in church music.
Bob Dylan is quoted as saying that Jerry was the greatest interpreter of his songs. The Bob Dylan album, Blood On The Tracks, that this song is from, was largely about the tension going on in his marriage at the time.
One of my favorite songs by JGB. Blue = love, regret, what could've/should've, passion to find it again. Bob Dylan wrote great songs, Jerry new how to portray them on stage. That group of musicians/singers were VERY talented. Check out " Keepers of the Flame". His band mates playing those songs after his passing.
Jerry's guitar work is so good, blows my mind when people don't put him in their list of top guitarists, they just don't know so well let them slide......
Going to see the Grateful Dead was like going to a crazy art party with all your friends. Going to see the Jerry Garcia Band was like going to Church with all your friends.
Garcia Band was a more intimate vibe, especially in the late 80s when "Touch of Grey" brought a stadium sized crowd to the Dead shows. Not better or worse, but definitely some of Jerry's most energetic performances from my Dead years.
I think after Brent died the Dead became more of an obligation and a chore for Jerry, and JGB was a much more relaxed and joyful musical outlet for him.
@@jp-bl5vk I saw the Dead once after Brent died. It was a really great show at the Silverdome in Vegas, April '91 with An Amazing Black Peter and Santana opening. The show was a gift from a Deadhead buddy as I'd just gotten back from the Gulf, and was on leave. After the army, it was straight to college in '92, and I never got to a JGB show again; wish I had, I could see how he'dfind JGB to be a refuge. It is awesome to see folks like Jamel discovering the music. Take care out there.
Is anyone noticing that the organist is playing a constant even rythim of chords for everyone to keep in time to, while conversing with Gerry on the keyboard. He made it look easy.
In my top 5 favorite songs all time. Jerry is a master and shows Bob Dylan how to do it. What a great story. If I ever own a ranch this will be its name.
There's a great version of this song for Jerry's 70yh b'day. With Melvin killing it on the keys and Oteil killing it on the vocal. I think it was at Red Rocks. I forget who was on guitar, but he was killing it too!
Haha YES! Now you're getting it. Jerry Garcia Band is such easy listening. And yes, that's the Jerry grin. He was like a sun on the stage and everyone else orbited around him, but what he liked the most was to see the other people shining too. That's Leo at the highest caliber. Melvin Seals on keys there and John Kahn on bass, two people he was very close with. The Dead was the original sound but with these guys he branched out and really explored a bunch of other things. Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia is another one to look out for, those two really had a magical connection and their covers are all outstanding. He really had a thing for keyboardists which I think is why Brent Mydland's passing hit him so hard. Last thing, when you're finally ready check out Jerry's work with a guy named David Grisman. It's another different take but let me tell you Jerry's folk and country blues really hit hard. Love watching your content, thank you! JGB is perfect Sunday afternoon music.
“ I headed down to New Orleans where I was looking to be employed working on a fishing boat outside of Delacroix” I worked offshore and used to catch my work boat in Delacroix! small world isn’t it?
Most of us are already deadheads before seeing your reactions. What we enjoy is watching you enjoy what we already know is special music while just being a good human.
Had to add, I love seeing how performers communicate with each other by just looking at each other. That’s talent. There’s a video (I think) from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Zeppelin and Neil Young, you see Robert Plant telling Neil to slow it down, he does then transition into a Neil Young song. Was a cool thing to see I thought.
Mr.J. There was a massive hit back in the sixties "Love is Blue". Wasn't a rock song, though there was a vocal version, the version I recall the most was by Paul Mauriat Orch. It make the association of love=blue or blue=love.

Go first in the world, go forth with your fears
Remember a price must be paid
Be always too soon, be never too fast
At the time when all bets must be laid
Beware of the darkness, be kind to your children
Remember the woman who waits
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at your gate
When you're caught by the gale and you're full under sail
Beware of the dangers below
And the song that you sing should not be too sad
And be sure not to sing it too slow
Be calm in the face of all common disgraces
And know what they're doin' it for
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at your door
When you're out on the road and feelin' quite lost
Consider the burden of fame
And he who is wise will not criticize
When other men fail at the game
Beware of strange faces and dark dingy places
Be careful while bending the law
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at your door
When you're down in the dumps and not ready to deal
Decide what it is that you need
Is it money or love, is it learning to live
Or is it the mouth you must feed
Be known as a man who will always be candid
On questions that do not relate
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at the gate
And the house you live in will never fall down
If you pity the stranger who stands at the gate

Bob Dylan's eulogy for Jerry: "There’s no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or as a player. I don’t think any eulogizing will do him justice. He was that great, much more than a superb musician, with an uncanny ear and dexterity. He’s the very spirit personified of whatever is Muddy River country at its core and screams up into the spheres. He really had no equal. To me he wasn’t only a musician and friend, he was more like a big brother who taught and showed me more than he’ll ever know. I saw Melvin with JGB last year just before COVID kicked in!!! So much fun, can’t wait for them to start touring again! Melvin did a live show a couple of months ago as a live UA-cam event I watched!!! 🎶🎼🎵👌👍✌️😎
The hammond b3 will blow your hair back.
Saw JGB once in 87’ and they did this for a sweet encore. Another Dylan song was a highlight - “Forever Young”.
I find myself listening to more Jerry Garcia Band over the Dead lately.
Me too.
JGB is very different than the Dead. They are both awesome. When things open up you can still see today’s version of JGB with John K playing Jerry’s part. They are in a word Awesome. Not Jerry but a great show non-the-less.
@@DrJohn421 oh I know. Just find myself enjoying JGB more then the dead.
It always does my heart good to see Jerry smiling on stage.
One of my favorite all time shows was a JGB show at the Orphium in San Francisco. Love your appreciation for the man ♥️
What a classic version of this Dylan tune. The backup singers were known as the Jerryettes. I saw them many times and they were mazing.
Oh man, Jerry was on fire and the band is tight. What an incredible version of what was a signature JGB song. Thanks Bob.
It was once said that the Grateful Dead was Garcia’s wife and JGB was his mistress. The JGB shows were so chill. I miss those days.
JGB covering Dylan... is this what they mean by “the planets aligning”?
Thanks for sharingi! You are the best at this. You've only scratched the surface in regards to Jerry and the Grateful Dead. Keep delving and you'll be amazed. I watched your video on your top five bands and it's hard to argue but I believe you'll have the Dead at #1 when it's all said and done. Much love my brother!!
A JGB concert was just like Christmas Eve church ⛪️. It's so impressive that you appreciate it for what it was and is still.
honestly my man I have not been out to see music for a while prior to the pandemic...so to watch you enjoy this feels like being with a friend who has never seen such amazing stuff before! So thanks buddy! Sporting my Teach Peace hoodie as we speak! All the love!
Jerry and Merle were having soooi much fun during this show! The whole dvd is amazing!
That isnt merle on keys. He was with jerry earlier in career that is Melvin seals who played with jerry from 80 to 95.
You are correct, thank you sir
@@radiodead745 I wasn't being a wise ass . I just know I was too young to see merle but caught melvin ripping with jerry when he passed through nyc and surrounding with jgb. Those shows were 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
How can u not love that! His sound is always an amazing feeling.I thought it meant tangled up in feelings..Thanku Jamel for reacting and loving these guys too.🏵🌸🌺🌻
Performances by this version of JERRY Garcia Band, which lineup was more than a decade, was affectionately referred to as Jerry Church, and Gloria, Jackie and Melvin all had backgrounds in church music.
This is one of my favorites of all times. 💜
Jerry and the band Sound Sooo great.
Love the Jerettes!
Bob Dylan is quoted as saying that Jerry was the greatest interpreter of his songs. The Bob Dylan album, Blood On The Tracks, that this song is from, was largely about the tension going on in his marriage at the time.
One of the best albums ever made.
@@patrickbrcr my favorite Dylan album and certainly near the top of any “best of Dylan” lists.
My favorite Dylan album & in my Top 5 All-time albums.
Bro, I don’t leave a ton of comments, but thanks for this one. I’ve always loved Bob’s version, and this was an unexpected treat.
What a great tour this was! I will treasure being there.
Jamel, take a listen to Simple Twist of Fate, another Garcia Band cover of Dylan from the same album as Tangled Up In Blue.
Jerry killing it on the guitar 🎸… Outstanding video 👍👍
This was a bob dylan song. Both versions are great !
This is, and remains a Bob Dylan song. This cover is really good.
@@jeffstumpf9129 got it!
Oh yeah Jerry Garcia is like the pied Piper for music ✌️😎😊
Definitely!... having been fortunate enough to have seen JGB in this era, I definitely agree with that man ✊😎
Outstanding. ! JGB SHOWS were fantastic. Personally I enjoyed them a tad more than the dead. Jerry was something else.
Great one for a snowy Sunday evening, nice vibe 👍
only got to see them once, in 1988 at the Warfield in LA, such an awesome show
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!
@@jp-bl5vk Agreed
This is why I like this channel, I get to discover new things about my past. Sweet performance 💙
This is my favorite song JGB did. Such a ripper. Of course Midnight Moonlight is a favorite too. Ain't no bread in the breadbox...
“ I headed down to New Orleans where I was looking to be employed working on a fishing boat outside of Delacroix”
I worked offshore and used to catch my work boat in Delacroix! small world isn’t it?
Jamel figured out "blue" and explained it well. Great band and great words from Bob.
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!
He loved and lived to play
Ty Jerry!
JGB shows were much fun. Always put a smile on my face.
JGB doing Dylan is magic and I Shall Be Released is a must. Ty
I am so glad you are covering this song. Please check out Ruben and Cerise next.
5-22-77 Franklins Tower is magic!
Thank you for keeping good music alive.
JGB...my sisters and my brothers....don't let go...two great songs on utube from this same show
AAAwwwwww seeing john kahn playing base with jerry melts my heart... I want a friendship like that in my life
Mr.J. There was a massive hit back in the sixties "Love is Blue". Wasn't a rock song, though there was a vocal version, the version I recall the most was by Paul Mauriat Orch. It make the association of love=blue or blue=love.
