  • Kayaking on the only natural lake in Southern Illinois, Horseshoe Lake in Alexander County. This lake is an oxbow lake. It used to be a part of the river at one time. That makes it natural. It has been dammed, but it's still naturally made. It's my new favorite kayaking spot, too. We did two miles, but there are even more miles upon miles of lake to enjoy.

I would have never guessed. In that area. I wonder if there was a wind storm that took a lot of trees out, they seem stunted. At first I was thinking somewhere around Horseshoe bluff, but this is North of Cahokia Mounds and South of Pontoon Beach. Looks like there is a trail on that one peninsula. Also a huge chunk of land is golf course owned.

@@AttorneyBCollins This isn't Horseshoe Lake in Madison County as I already commented on. This lake is in the Southern end of Illinois, not in the metro East St Louis area.

Today's pro-tip: I'd recommend a rolltop pvc drybag backpack for your extra gear as it'll be waterproof and hold buoyancy air in case it ever accidentally goes overboard. (It'll float, or at least not sink as fast)
(The orange bag looks like a small backpack on my phone screen)

When you said "Horseshoe Lake" I thought that you were referring to the one in Madison County Granite City, Illinois. I never knew there was two lakes of the same name in Illinois.

Man, I need to get a kayak. I've been wanting to go to Horseshoe Lake and back to the Cache River. When I see one at a store I take pictures of it then research reviews. Most kayaks sold at Walmart and such tend to have reviews about being unstable. I'll keep looking.

Make sure the weight limit is more than what you weigh and also I find that sit on tops, longer one, seem more stable. Michelle uses a Sun Dolphin brand from DICKS Sporting Goods. It is very nice!

@@HikingWithShawn Ok, thanks. I've also been looking at kayaks that you can attach a small electric motor to also. That would be a nice option.

There are a few different ones. The one I have to put it includes Alexander County in the name.

I'm not following Shawn, isn't about every Lake in the state made by damming up a river or creek? the exception being those that are fed by natural springs like Weldon Springs lake in DeWitt County?

A lot of the lakes are dug up by man and then a creek or river is used to fill them. Horseshoe was a part of the river at one time, long ago.
