This was a really thorough and helpful grooming tutorial on bathing a standard poodle. I just adopted a seven-year-old grey standard poodle who had been rescued by a previous owner from a less than ideal breeder. Although she has had quite the journey to get to me, I am so pleased to learn more about this breed and how to give her the care she deserves. Thanks for posting!

Great hint about the chamois, I have never thought of that! My Standard just dug a huge hole in our yard a couple days ago, I'm betting she was dirtier that this boy :-) worse part is she HATES having anything done in the rear - whether it's trimming the hips or anything involving the feet she battles all the time.

Hi, Oasis started his grooming at 4 weeks old from the breeder and than I groomed him often at home or my shop to get him used to it. Practice every day and they will get used to grooming. Praise him when he does something right.
I have a silver-beige standard poodle and I groom her by myself...I have a plastic tub on the floor and a shower head at the end of my downstairs faucets....I have a grooming table and use a hydro dryer on her...She is clipped all over her body and legs with a #7 or #5 blade (except head and tail which are scissored)...do towel them well, she has always been gentle to bath and clip.

Your welcome, I am glad you learned something. Blacks are nice, I love the silver too, I almost got a mini silver instead of my cream standard. I figured to keep them all the same size, I would not want the mini to get hurt from my standards. When you post some video send them to me, I would love to see your poodles.

Hi, thanks for the nice compliment. I got the shammie from a pet store. I have some Sham Wows. It is not the leather one. Look for one in a pet store. It is great to use and takes a lot of water off the dog. Good luck.

Its just a matter of them getting used to it. If you do it often and with care they will get better at it.

Poodles are the smartest dogs! Icouldn't believe it until I got a toy poodle and find out that they do not even need education and training! Once I had to tell her and she would always remember. She never does any mess or over reactions, never arguments with other dogs, she just loves everybody and enjoys her life with our family. She also travels a lot and never has problems on planes, cars, trains, boats. Behaviour just excellent like a human being but well educated!
I haven't gotten around to uploading any videos yet (I'm still figuring it all out! lol). Your videos have given me some great ideas (the bottle you use for the shampoo, for example). You give basic tips that some of us would never have thought of (like shampooing one side at a time) so thank you! I was thinking of another silver puppy until I saw how gorgeous your black one is in your videos - his coat looks like velvet!

Hi, congratulations on your new pup, my poodles tails are docked, the black one was left longer as she is from show stock and the tails are left longer for balance of the topknot. Go slow with the bath and praise her when she is good, never yell at her or she will hate the baths. bath her every 2 or 3 weeks so she can get used to it and you will see, she will just stand there. Sorry don't know brand, I bought it from a place called Pet Supply House in Canada, they have closed down now, There is a ring that can lock the handle, restaurant suppliers might sell these. It has a really good pressure.
In restaurant supply houses, they are called "pre-rinse units". Cheap ones run about $150, and really good ones can cost much more.
Oasis is a handsome boy! I ENVY THAT TUB! But you ARE a groomer so you MUST have one! My mini is a bit too big for the kitchen sink so I break my back washing her in the bath tub! Thank you for the video!

What a helpful video and such an adorable puppy, thank you very much. Can you tell me about your chamois? It doesn't look as if it is leather, if it isn't can you tell me what it's called and where to get it? And I'm so glad you warned against washing mats, my wonderful Toblerone (17 mo old black male) seems to gather mats that I had combed out the day before, so many that I never get ahead. He's really dirty, I want to wash him so badly but I can't. :-(
How did you train Oasis to stand so still for his bath? My dog BB does the shake and get me just about as wet as he is.

This was soo helpful! We just got (last Monday at 8 weeks) a Black/Tan (Phantom marking) Standard Poodle. Toady he is 9 weeks. I survived the bath thanks to you. I put him in the tub earlier today and gave him treats. Than I added some warm water so he heard the water coming out of the faucet( put him in it and he sniffed around, splashed a bit) and gave him treats. Just now we actually did the bath. I had my son help and give him treats while I was doing it. I also made sure he was exercised and almost ready for a nap so he wasn't full of energy. Poor thing after was shacking pretty hard, but just held him and reassured him with lots of praise and calm rocking. He's out cold now. Where did you get that hand held washer? I can try and look it up too. Would you recommend using a gauze pad to just rub on their teeth once a week? To help them keep their teeth clean and used to having that done to them so they don't freak out and bite later on? Thanks!

I have heard about using gauze on the teeth and it's better then using nothing. I would put doggy toothpaste on the gauze to make the teeth cleaner.
BTW they are very easy to poty train and don't shed. The perfect dog, the down side though is the grooming .

I think you explained well eventhough the audio quality made it hard to hear at times. How do you spell that towel you used? With 5 dogs and 3 of them being grooming breeds - on a farm, we do A LOT of baths so that would be very useful.

Hi, sorry for the late comment as I just saw this now. Yes it's best to shower your dog to get them clean, there is no need to fill up a tub and wash them.

Hi, Yes I pluck my own poodles ears, if my client dogs have very thick and tight hair in the ears, I just comb it out and cut it, I only pluck if it comes out easy.

Half an hour? Is it coin operated? Maybe it is per 1/2 hour and you could stay another 1/2 hour after that.
My mother has a toy poodle, she's tiny compared to your dog.
