This fine symphony reminds me of Walton's Symphony No.1 which has, perhaps, similar echoes of the sea (the Egge symphony is dedicated in memory of the Norwegian merchant ship crews of World War Two) has a magnificent climax in the first movement and also culminates in a fugue in the finale which ends in a hard-won sense of triumph.

The first movement has a mysterious opening and remains somber (throughout the whole Symphony). The second movement is elegiac and the third one features a fugue! Enjoyed the somewhat dissonant counterpoint and the triumphant finale!

I've just listened again to this terrific performance of Egge's terrific First Symphony. This is definitely the older recording by Gruner-Hegge as can be deduced from the radio announcement after the performance. However, I'd already worked that out as the performance has a much greater urgency in this performance compared to the later one released by Philips. What a shame that Gruner-Hegge's performance has never been released on CD. Still, it is great to see its appearance on You Tube and thank you for posting it. 😀

I also had the Philips LP (Aurora CD) but think that this may be the earlier, and more atmospheric, performance under Gruner Hegge, once on a Swedish HMV LP.

Good memory. This recording dates from 1958. It would be four years later until I discovered classical music. The comments relate that this performance is by the Filharmoniska sällskapets orkester, Oslo, and that the conductor is Odd Grüner-Hegge.

I once owned this on a Philips LP but hadn't heard it for decades. Thank you so much for uploading it. Do you have anything more by Egge? I find his music fascinating.
