All of y'all are completely missing their point. They're saying average Asian men aren't considered sexy, whereas average white men are in the media. Giving examples of your favorite kpop idols is just proving their point that as an Asian male to be considered sexy you have to be really attractive
tmntsuperhiros I think that while you make a valid point, overall, Asian men are less represented in the media, and when they are, generally speaking, they are forced into a role typically assumed by Asians (like the geeky math nerd) and aren't given as many opportunities to play the "sexy and rugged" leads that are generally given to White Males. So while there may be not "attractive" white males, they are still given more opportunities that your "not attractive" Asians wouldn't be given.

I see so many comments here bringing up EXO or BTS, but that is not what your average asian looks like. The average asian gets around, is complimented occasionally, but still feels largely undermined. Lets face it, we live in a world where 'white' physical features are subconsciously programmed within us to be desirable, the blue eyes, the jawlines, the hair, we all want to be in a place we aren't, so why shouldn't we feel bad? What really makes a man sexy, is his body language, his confidence, his style, his grace, his warmness and his individuality. It's alright to rate physical attractiveness at the back of your minds, but there comes a point where this thin filter of attractiveness tears off once you get to know a person, to see the world through his/her eyes, to live another story for a short period of time, and THAT is what prevails in the end.
Since when did ´´world´´ mean only America? They are basing their opinions off AMERICAN values and culture. Referring only to how AMERICAN (and little bit of Indian) media portrays asians, without any regard to actual asian countries where typical asian traits are valued more. I do agree that other traits than aesthetics should be the basis of judging attractiveness, but in the end it´s just a subjective opinion who all of us have.

But a lot of the time people even stay away from features which are usually considered with whites. ESPECIALLY in South USA where there are a lot less white heritages. I visited korea and I could see good looking men and women in the subway, in the streets, in coffee shops, everywhere. They didn't look like idols (some do tho) but many were good looking for real.

I never really paid attention to this issue until I started dating a Chinese man. People constantly tell me he's "handsome for being Asian" or well "Asian men are your type". Comments like this are so offensive! My boyfriend is handsome because he's handsome and a good man. I adore him and race has nothing to do with it. I put off telling my parents for months I had a boyfriend when I introduced him my parents were in shock and the next day they were arguing over what race he was instead of asking me questions like what does he do, where is he from, etc. If we were the same race the conversation would be different.

This was such an important video for me to watch! I am East African and I too feel like I fall in the same kinda idea of dating struggle you all may have experienced. This topic hits home mainly because it’s difficult for groups to see how attractive someone is if they fall into the average amongst their race. Thank you for openly speaking about this important topic for Asian men to feel more empowered and heard. I think Kpop will have a big impact and things of that nature. I also want to put it out there that it is okay for Asian men to look at other minority people as beautiful too! Because while we are saying they are not featured as sexy in the white culture, can they be sexy in others too? Thankfully I am fortunate enough to have grown up in a heavily diverse community where I truly can see all beauty in many forms.

The question is not "are there sexy Asian men?", of course there are. It's, why doesn't Western media portray Asian men as strong, charming and desirable? These are the qualities women believe make a man sexy. These are the images and rolls that Asian men are not often cast in.
I think part of it is what was talked about at the tail end of the video -- many of the people writing these asian characters into the film aren't asian and that has an impact on how asians in general are portrayed. The obvious thing is that we need asian actors in asians roles and for that to be more common. The less obvious thing needed, is people who will do them justice in writing the screenplays and scripts.

This is actually very true. I see so many comments saying "oh but have you seen Eugene or BTS?" Like they are attractive BUT what about the other "average" looking Asians? I speak for all average Asian males when I say this. You people do not get how hard it is to find people who genuinely find you attractive when you are an "average" looking Asian. To be an "attractive" asian, you have to have 1. European Characteristics or 2. Be very muscular. Majority of Asian men don't look like that and that puts us in a whole separate world where people constantly put us down.

The only disadvantage asian men really have is their height. Men are often attracted to shorter women, and women are often attracted to shorter men. Again, this is biological instinct, not an attempt to be cruel to someone else. :) Even an average guy can look very attractive, if he takes good care of himself, in all areas of life, and work on both his appearance and his character. Eugine might be genetically blessed, but he is also doing his best to maximise his potential.
It's exactly what they said in the video. Average white males are still seen as attractive. And, in media, they are always paired with insanely attractive women. But men like these K-Pop artists are not the best representative of the average asian male, so you can't really compare. Just like Sofia Vergara, Shakira and Selma Hayek, for exemple, aren't the best representatives of the average latina woman. We are "trained" to perceive all types of white people as attractive, but only certain types of other ethnicities as attractive.

I think the K-Pop thing has kind of hurt the average Asian male because the idols are incredibly gorgeous, almost unbelievably so, and when someone actually meets an average Asian they're so disappointed. People see stars like Beyonce and Rihanna or really attractive black women in videos or on social media and expect all of them to look like that. The average " black women" is sometimes left in the dark. The simple answer is the western media portrayal of Asian men as nerds, geeks and something of a comedic relief. On the flip side, go watch Korean and Chinese drama (I especially love wuxia series) there are tons of hot Asian men (no homo) in leading roles. There is a prerogative in western media to exclude good looking Asian men and only portrays the average to below average ones.

tmntsuperhiros I think that while you make a valid point, overall, Asian men are less represented in the media, and when they are, generally speaking, they are forced into a role typically assumed by Asians (like the geeky math nerd) and aren't given as many opportunities to play the "sexy and rugged" leads that are generally given to White Males. So while there may be not "attractive" white males, they are still given more opportunities that your "not attractive" Asians wouldn't be given.

I see so many comments here bringing up EXO or BTS, but that is not what your average asian looks like.
The average asian gets around, is complimented occasionally, but still feels largely undermined. Lets face it, we live in a world where 'white' physical features are subconsciously programmed within us to be desirable, the blue eyes, the jawlines, the hair, we all want to be in a place we aren't, so why shouldn't we feel bad? What really makes a man sexy, is his body language, his confidence, his style, his grace, his warmness and his individuality. It's alright to rate physical attractiveness at the back of your minds, but there comes a point where this thin filter of attractiveness tears off once you get to know a person, to see the world through his/her eyes, to live another story for a short period of time, and THAT is what prevails in the end.
Since when did ´´world´´ mean only America? They are basing their opinions off AMERICAN values and culture. Referring only to how AMERICAN (and little bit of Indian) media portrays asians, without any regard to actual asian countries where typical asian traits are valued more. I do agree that other traits than aesthetics should be the basis of judging attractiveness, but in the end it´s just a subjective opinion who all of us have.

I realised the only chance most asian men (90%) have nowadays in the western worlds are either asian women or kpop anime fangirls. that is fact and it really sucks. I visited korea and I could see good looking men and women in the subway, in the streets, in coffee shops, everywhere. They didn't look like idols (some do tho) but many were good looking for real.

This was such an important video for me to watch! I am East African and I too feel like I fall in the same kinda idea of dating struggle you all may have experienced. This topic hits home mainly because it’s difficult for groups to see how attractive someone is if they fall into the average amongst their race. Thank you for openly speaking about this important topic for Asian men to feel more empowered and heard. I think Kpop will have a big impact and things of that nature. I also want to put it out there that it is okay for Asian men to look at other minority people as beautiful too! Because while we are saying they are not featured as sexy in the white culture, can they be sexy in others too? Thankfully I am fortunate enough to have grown up in a heavily diverse community where I truly can see all beauty in many forms.

The question is not "are there sexy Asian men?", of course there are. It's, why doesn't Western media portray Asian men as strong, charming and desirable? These are the qualities women believe make a man sexy. These are the images and rolls that Asian men are not often cast in.

I think part of it is what was talked about at the tail end of the video -- many of the people writing these asian characters into the film aren't asian and that has an impact on how asians in general are portrayed. The obvious thing is that we need asian actors in asians roles and for that to be more common. The less obvious thing needed, is people who will do them justice in writing the screenplays and scripts.

This is actually very true. I see so many comments saying "oh but have you seen Eugene or BTS?" Like they are attractive BUT what about the other "average" looking Asians? I speak for all average Asian males when I say this. You people do not get how hard it is to find people who genuinely find you attractive when you are an "average" looking Asian. To be an "attractive" asian, you have to have 1. European Characteristics or 2. Be very muscular. Majority of Asian men don't look like that and that puts us in a whole separate world where people constantly put us down.

The only disadvantage asian men really have is their height. Men are often attracted to shorter women, and women are often attracted to shorter men. Again, this is biological instinct, not an attempt to be cruel to someone else. :) Even an average guy can look very attractive, if he takes good care of himself, in all areas of life, and work on both his appearance and his character. Eugine might be genetically blessed, but he is also doing his best to maximise his potential.

It's exactly what they said in the video. Average white males are still seen as attractive. And, in media, they are always paired with insanely attractive women. But men like these K-Pop artists are not the best representative of the average asian male, so you can't really compare. Just like Sofia Vergara, Shakira and Selma Hayek, for exemple, aren't the best representatives of the average latina woman. We are "trained" to perceive all types of white people as attractive, but only certain types of other ethnicities as attractive.

I realised the only chance most asian men (90%) have nowadays in the western worlds are either asian women or kpop anime fangirls. that is fact and it really sucks. I mean look at them most of them have a babyface, small nose, no facial hair, the eyes etc. somehow most kpop fangirls share similar traits which can be abit irritating sometimes. no offense. Here in central europe asian men have stick to such kpop fan communities, because that's the only place the get the most attention. outside of it you only deal with instant rejection or they are not even looking at you. even though for being above average looking. It is really because of Asian traits and look.

I think the K-Pop thing has kind of hurt the average Asian male because the idols are incredibly gorgeous, almost unbelievably so, and when someone actually meets an average Asian they're so disappointed. I think the people who are talking about K-pop in the comment section are either ignoring the video and what it means or know they're telling the truth but are in denial about the fact not all Asian men look like K-pop stars.
I think I'm probably one of the few people in my group of friends who sees an 'average' looking Asian, not westernized or anything, just natural, and thinks they're hot. I know this a little off topic but this happens with black women also. People see stars like Beyonce and Rihanna or really attractive black women in videos or on social media and expect all of them to look like that. The average " black women" is sometimes left in the dark. I not saying people don't find many black women attractive, but sometimes because of media they expect too much and the "average black women or man" at that get passed by. I am also not comparing the two or anything, I just wanted to put this out there. Media can build and knock down. Please don't hate on me.

The simple answer is the western media portrayal of Asian men as nerds, geeks and something of a comedic relief. On the flip side, go watch Korean and Chinese drama (I especially love wuxia series) there are tons of hot Asian men (no homo) in leading roles. There is a prerogative in western media to exclude good looking Asian men and only portrays the average to below average ones.

I've dated two Asian men in my life, one Chinese and one Philippino. I think it kind of goes both ways rather they are into you too. I grew up in a neighborhood where it is dominantly Asians and it was hard to find of who was attracted to me too.

I think Asian men are super sexy - not all of them, but the "average" ones can still be attractive, just like "average" guys of any other race; it all depends on what you like. Asian men don't have to be pop stars or movie-stars to be attractive. I did a LOT of staring on the trains in Tokyo, lol. It was actually good to see that the majority of Asian dudes are just...regular dudes. But plenty of them were plenty attractive!
