It sounds great to me. I used to have a real Twin which was about 20 years old at the time, and honestly it was a pain. It got really hot and broke several times before finally catching fire.

Damn! I also had The "twin" from the 80's with two eminence speakers with an overdrive channel. The built in distortion was crappy and paper thin that was like a light overdrive. Clean channel was beautiful! For a couple of years the amp was trouble free, then while on a gig the amp would cut out and you would have to turn it up to ten , hit an A chord and the volume would come back to normal. My local amp tech found that a wire came loose or was left unsoldered from the factory. He fixed the problem and I sold it due to the weight. This amp was the "Twin" that had a circuitry designed by amp guru Paul Riveira

I have both the tone master twin and the tube one. And I’ve a/b ‘d and there is no real difference even when overdriven. They both sound amazing. In fact I slightly prefer the sound of the tone master. Also I prefer gigging with the tone master as I can set how much headroom I need using the attenuators. So it’s pretty cool. Love my tone master.

I took the plunge and bought a Fender Twin ToneMaster when they were first available in Australia sometime in late 2019 or 2020. I had previously put down the cash for a 1970's Twin reverb, but the sale fell through, so the Tonemaster was my next choice and similar price at the end of the day.
It has been a great amp. It gets played everyday, and it gets used and abused by a bunch of teenagers practicing their band. I have had no issues with the amp 3 years on with all this regular use. The cleans are gorgeous! And I think the reverb and tremolo are very sweet. Particularly with the the software upgrade.
I use the "attenuator" to be able to set the amp at volume 10 without blowing the roof off, as I love that "woofy" simulated Twin breakup.
I use a clean boost pedal to accentuate that, but I have to say I have struggled to find a good pairing with drive pedals and this amp. I am considering trying a speaker change with some real creambacks.
I would like to try the deluxe reverb version, I wonder if hat has more of that wonderful "woofiness"on tap.
Anyway, my 2 cents. Thanks for your great channel dude.

I’m sold on theses hard core. I used to be that guy. China ??? Solid state ???? Truth is it’s even better and it blows my freaking mind!!!! Then the weight factor ...... but that would not even half way matter if they didn’t get the sound right, and they absolutely killed it. I have a USA fender concert amp sitting in my jam room right now which I love ... play it every day but these are just special sounding Amps. Go try one !!!

I got mine about the time this video was made. I've used it ever since with no problems. The DO and the power attenuator make this model much more versatile than the original, which I used for close to 40 years. And the reduced weight is just another plus.

Every twin Ive ever played is woofy and raspy when turned up into distortion range, twins werent made for overdrive. They are the best clean amp ever made. Thats what most people buy them for. If you want a great overdrive amp, buy a Marshall, or some other drive amp.

I had a chance from my local guitar shop last weekend to try out the twin tonemaster in a live situation. location : medium club, appr. 200 visitors. Genre : 7-piece funk/soul band. eq. : professional PA and monitors. Guitar : fender telecaster usa. drive pedals : J rockett the dude, Ibanez TS 808, delay : Nemesis. reverb : from the tonemaster. I ran it on the 85wfull power setting. My Findings, Plus : XLR out, cab sim, quiet no hum, ofcourse the weight, great clean sound and headroom, good quality reverb & tremolo. Minus : up to Vol. 4 convincing tube feel, after vol. 4/5 a thinner sound with less bite and dynamics. this is a modeling (pre) amp design, as such there is no real tube compression from the power amp at higher levels. For a first try though it was not bad, I own a ‘71 twin rev. non master with which I could compare it at home. For a made in china amp a bit overpriced. Overall I rate it at 8.5

You need an attenuator because: 1) There's no master volume, so the only way to get the amp to distort (on its own) is to crank the volume. But that would be really loud. 2) When a non-master volume amp is cranked into distortion, it's primarily the output stage that's distorting (which is different than distortion achieved with a MV). Presumably, cranking this amp produces output stage-type distortion. But again, cranking the volume would be really loud without attenuation.

  • @Andy_Yates
    @Andy_Yates 5 років тому +1

The cleans sound really amazing with this amp, especially with the telecaster neck pickup! It makes me want to play mine :) With the distortion and fuzz pedals, the bass was making speaker start to flub a bit. I don't know if that's the nature of a twin, or the eq with volume, but it seems like something that can be eq'ed out if needed. I've been so close to buying a Deluxe Reverb RI for so long now, and now the Tone Masters are out. I'll see how things look in a while when some of the honeymoon shine has worn off :). Hats off to Fender for trying this though, they've certainly tested the market with these.

06/30/2020: Why two jack channels? I see one channel is designated "Normal" for only clean tones and the other channel is labeled "Vibrato" (has reverb). So, why not just use the footswitch for reverb and you can run the Vibrato channel clean or with reverb. So, why is there a need for the "Normal" all clean channel? Also, I see it is supposed to copy the tube amp, which any tube amp cannot have headphones. But, come on, this is solid-state and they could have added a headphone jack for total silent playing. The attenuator switch in the back is basically a volume knob, and you can't play silent. So, why is there no headphone jack at a price of $1,000.00 for a slid-state amp? Can anyone out there in cyberland answer these two questions?

It doesn’t sound digital to me. The price is a bit high, I think: you can get a great tube amp for the same kind of money, so why go digital, since it doesn’t have that many more features than a tube amp? Maybe the attenuation and the line out?

It was an answer to a market leaning that way. The cabinet is pine with is a tone wood rather than ply wood like the tube version. Other than that, I'm not sure of the price. It's built in China

I think it's in the reliability that this amp is a win! Compared to its tube counterpart, it weighs almost half as much (as he says in the video) and since it doesn't contain tubes, it's more roadworthy and less likely to break during a gig due to f.e. broken tubes!
All that without sacrificing tone (judging from what I heard in the video) is a great achievement! 👌👌

    • @wilfried5418

It is almost as expensive as a “real” Deluxe Reverb, over 1000€... It is also the price of two Helix Stomp, for instance. I am convinced it sounds great but I’m not sure about spending that kind of money for it.

There's no way a digital amp like this will last 50+ years, like so many old fender tube amps, which are still going strong to this day! Yeah, they all needed some minor maintenance but old tube amps are usually pretty easy to fix yourself & parts are plentiful. However, I don't see it with this digital amp. Good luck getting parts for that thing, years from now.. Only time will tell, how these hold up in the long run. I'd love to see a gut shot though, nevertheless!

There is no master volume, so the attenuator allows you to push the channel volume and still play at a lower overall volume without adding a master volume dial to the circuit and make it look like something other than a clone of the original amp.

I must say, I am surprised by the sounds coming from this amp. But there is just still some inexplicable reason I would opt for good old tube amps over this one. I guess I just feel like if it was "good enough" for all the greats from the 50's onwards, I'll just stick with that. Although, that's not to say that this doesn't have some modern conveniences and features that classic tube amps don't have.

Your phone is class d too.
Tubes make a penetrating sound that you can feel in your bones, the only way to tell is to play it yourself and turn those dials up and down.
Remember when Scotty asks the Computer if that's really Captain Kirk's voice or not? That's what we're talking about, a digital deception that mimics certain sounds but can't duplicate the phenomenon of vacuum tubes v transitors. Waveform can show it. Players can tell you it changes time, ss to fast responses, but EARS and FINGERS can easily tell difference. When its loud in gig that emulation will vanish, drums, bass will kick it out of sonic space. I'll keep my tube amps forever.

There are people who can figure out the bad resistor, capacitor, op amp, transistor etc......techs won't touch a TV after a few years, all the digital gadgets we have will go to a landfill when broken because no one will fix them. that that they can't be fixed, it's just not worth it and the parts become obsolete and go out of production pretty fast. It sounds great but it's the same price as the analog alternative but won't live nearly as long. I;m not an analog snob but How can the price be the same? no sir. @@-thirteen "after a few years" how long are we talking here because I still repair tech that is like 10+ years old. Also TVs are incredibly easy to fix, that's just a waste of money if you're just chucking all of your broken tech into landfill. A tube amp has a higher chance of randomly breaking on you than a modeling amp would and it needs more maintenance. And if it where to break on you they are really easy to fix as the parts in them are child's play. And parts are actually quite easy to find if you know what you are looking for. And parts do not become obsolete. They may do in letter iterations, but parts are still findable. As for the price, yeah it really expensive which always annoying, specially with a modeling amp, but it's what you get for the parts they are using and that really decent 8 core processor.

I was also considering this option, but the fact of the matter is I would need to purchase a second device to get the full range of functionality this offers out of a regular Twin. You would need to buy something like the Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander so you could have the ability to get the breakup tones (somewhere around 6 and up on the volume knob) and have an impulse response direct out. So really, you're looking at needing to spend $1299 more to have a reactive load/attenuator/impulse response loader to accompany it. This thing is half the weight, sounds real, has attenuation, and already has an XLR out with two different (potential customizable) impulse responses.
