      Hi, I've just started with DaVinci & can't seem find the answer to one simple question, how to zoom in to a specific area of the clip I'm working on. The mouse wheel allows me to zoom in, but only straight to the center of the clip. How do you choose a different area?
      All other video editors I've worked with made this operation patently obvious but Davinci has me flummoxed. ;-)

    • @luv966
      @luv966 Місяць тому

      @@steveennever9905 Hey! Do you mean when using dynamic zoom? You have to go to Edit tab, find there an icon (bottom left to video preview) where you can change to Transform edit view, Dynamic zoom view etc. This gives you an option to adjust a dynamic zoom to your needs. I am not sure if I am clear, so probably the best thing you can do is to find a video tutorial :)

    Of course you can click and drag a text in DaVinci, you just have to activate « Transform » in the lower left hand corner of the preview window.

      @@BenClaremontyour davinci exports might be faster if you use DNxHD instead of mp4, because it's a codec made for editing. Shutter encoder can change then pretty fast. Only downside is 10 times the file size. I've heard of using formats like this that were actually made for editing can make exports much faster as well as your timeline performance, even on the free version.

    One thing often overlooked in the DaVinci out of the box effects, transitions etc. is that they can be easily configured and when the default setting might make them look over the top (for a quick preview when hovering ove the effect) with configuration they are often better than expected.

The number of tutorial videos just for resolve and its view count is 600 million. If they had monetized that and accepted add they could have made 14 million dollars just by educating their own customers.

    I bought the Davinci Pro version ,2 years ago because it was on offer with the free mini console.
    I still have to master it (I'm almost 56 years old and for me it's just a hobby), I have little time and desire to do this, the updates are free and I have only paid for the software once, and in any case if I no longer had the free updates I would be equally happy because this software, given its current potential, will never become obsolete.
    And then... it has an Italian name

    I’ve been using Capcut for a few weeks now and I like it, but…
    1: I miss the audio syncing of external recorded audio. In DR external audio from a DJI Mic or Rode Wireless mic can sync automatically to the audio recorded in the video track, even Lumafusion can do this.
    2: DR doesn’t need to know your shoe size and food preferences, Capcut needs to know all about you and your computer network and sends the data to China. So if you care about privacy Capcut is not a great choice.
    3: Lumafusion has a great multicam feature, but it lacks all the whistles and bells that the other programs have.
    4: Capcut has a subscription model for the extra features, although for most users the free version is enough.
    BTW, do you know how to get rid of the annoying yellow pop-up dialogue box warning you to use keyframes?

    • @drinkinslim
      @drinkinslim 2 місяці тому

      I know, I hate that pop-up about keyframes. I submitted feedback to CapCut about it. I used LumaFusion but it just crashed a lot and started doing REALLY strange things the bigger my project got. I liked it at first but yeah, lots of missing features.

They put out version 26 last year and they have stopped making it. I tried Capcut 2 days ago thanks to you and it is a nice program. • @pbanaszek
    @pbanaszek Місяць тому

    I have both, however I'm a little bit overwhelmed with options in DaVinci, so I would need to spend some time to fully understand, how this software works. I'm also trying Filmora, it's got some nice features as well, but in comparison to these 2 mentioned in your video, you need to pay for that. Not so much, but its always some money. I still can not decide, which tool I would like to fully use, because each of these 3 got something unique.
    What is also worth mentioning, is that DaVinci can handle VST plugins for music adjustments! Because I playing around with music as well, I got tons of different VSTs, and DaVinci needs some time to scan your system and find them, so you could use it. And because of that loading DaVinci in state, that I could use it, takes more time for me, than for regular user, that dont have any VST.

    CapCut seems to be heavily optimized for TikTok and UA-cam shorts, with the automatic captions, detecting and removing filler words etc.
    So it seems like it may be productive even for an experienced Davinci user to use CapCut for creating those shorter clips with captions.

    Very good comparison, I have the same experiences.
    What is also a disadvantage for me is the lack of AudioScrubbing.
    I edit a lot to music, and I want to have my cuts in exactly the right place. With CapCut this is a long process due to the lack of audio scrubbing.
    The lack of multiline editing is also a problem if you are used to working with Resolve (or other editors).
    I am absolutely not a professional, but as a hobbyist I still want to reach a certain level.

    Having been a CapCut user for 17 hours, I will agree with your closing statement in that CapCut may not be the end all of editing programs, it is a very nice tool to have in the tool box. Personally, I think that FCPX has gotten a bit long in the tooth and while it's still my preferred program for longer, multi layered projects, they have failed to keep up with current technology video editing trends. However, I sure wish CapCut will add the Marking feature...the M on FCPX, as it could solve a few issues. And Ben...promise that you'll never stop making reviews and tutorials!

      As a work-around for the marking feature (coz there isn't one in CapCut), I use the in (i) and out (o) points as if they were markers. Works okay as temporary markers anyway, eg for coming back to the project and seeing where you left off.

    • @TheGadgetGuru
      @TheGadgetGuru 2 місяці тому

      @@drinkinslim I tried that, but here's the problem. When trying to find something like an audible sync point, CapCut doesn't have the ability to skim the audio track with the keyboard arrows so that you can find an exact point...so using the I/O method is hit and miss. Here's three more issues I've found: 1) While it has various masks options, there's no option to draw a mask. So, if you need to cut out a specific section, you're out of luck. 2) If you're using Captions for a production that has multiple camera angles and there's not a single on screen location that works for the caption placement, the only way to do this is by highlighting the desired captions you want to move and using the Uniform Scale to pinpoint locations. The "apply to all" selection is a bit confusing. It would be nice if you could drag and drop and have it only affect the captions you highlighted. 3) When working with multiple layers where one or more layers has the talent's background cutout, there's numbered buttons to select to make it work properly. I've watched a bunch of tutorials and I haven't seen anyone address this yet. Ben?

    • @TheGadgetGuru
      @TheGadgetGuru 2 місяці тому

      One more item: If you have b-roll or an image or two on a timeline and want to add a transition, it affects the entire video, not just the b-roll. As an example, if you add an earthquake style transition, and your intention is to have some shake between two images placed above the main timeline, it affects everything below it...not just the b-roll or images.

  • @drinkinslim

    Great video. Finally an honest comparison of the two. :)
    Novel, incoming...
    1) the iPad app for Resolve is "complete @ss" on anything less than an M1 chipped iPad. It just breaks more and more as you use it. Ask me how I know. :)
    2) the "advanced features" you mentioned in CapCut are Pro (paid) ones vs free in Resolve.
    3) CapCut isn't limited to 15 minutes export on the free version. I'm editing on Windows, mind you. Having said that, I *don't* get the prores options for exporting, even though technically the WIndows version could have it.
    4) CapCut's rendered audio is limited to a mere 192kbps AAC (compressed audio). Even UA-cam supports 256kbps AAC. I hate to think what happens to the audio when it's rendered out and then edited again. Yikes. Although CapCut can render FLAC (lossless compressed audio), it is a separate file that you would then need to stitch together with the video in another program.
    5) A pro for CapCut: it has Speed Ramps! I couldn't find that in Resolve. CapCut also has a whiten teeth feature which is apparently useful for EVERYONE on UA-cam, because ALL UA-camrs have Donny Osmond level white teeth. Wait, who's Donny Osmond? ;)

    I like DaVinci as much as CapCut. When I do an edit (in DaVinci), with either sound or picture, everything on the various timelines all go out of sync, then I spend ages putting everything back together. I now have to lock all time lines to do and edit, then unlock to carry on editing, that is until the next cut, thus wasting so much time,. On CamCut, when I edit, or place a bit of music on a time line, footage on all the other open timelines stays in place. I am sure I am missing something with DaVinci. If the timelines did not constantly go out of sync, I would place Davinci in front of CapCut. I have just edited (in the past weeks) 4 x videos with a R/T of 3hours each on CapCut with no issues at all. I could not have done this using DaVinci.

    Capcut seems to have copied Final cut 1-1 and made it available for windows but again it suffers from the same problem that FCP suffers like the magnetic timeline (lol), clip based editing instead of track based like you can edit multiple clips at the same time, you can't edit audio and video separately easily but it comes with tons of built in effects which would come in really handy but I've noticed it lacks the in-depth control that Resolve/Fusion has which makes it a obvious choice for me but if for social media/reels editing it could be a viable choice if you only care about being able to edit the fastest without much quality and tool control. The built in effects are a lot in Capcut which is a really good feature but I don't think they let you add any currently but for Resolve, I can use professional plugins made by companies like MotionVFX or make mine and stand out that way lol as I've kind of noticed 80% of videos made with Capcut have started to look the same and it's not just effects and graphics.
    3:51 Resolve has that feature btw, if you are using the regular Text effect then you can just click on it and move and snap to different part of the video and if you are using the Text+ effect then you'd have to turn on the transform widget (at the bottom right of the viewer) and you'd be able to move, rotate, scale etc. (currently it doesn't support snapping like the Text effect)
    Great video dude. Thanks for all of the information.
