- Guitar and Synth demo of the newly enhanced otherworldly reverberator, the Afterneath V3 by EarthQuaker Devices.
Available for purchase at: thepedalzone.com/afterneath-v3/
The Afterneath Reverb is a modern day classic. On top of its now iconic cascading and cavernous ambient tones, the new Afterneath V3 sports an expression and CV input letting you utilize 9 different quantize modes for the drag control, which opens up portals to uncharted pitch-shifting and textural potential. From wild modulated textures, deep drones, cascading multi-tap delays, infinite reverb and step sequenced bliss, the Afterneath V3 truly stands out as an out-of-this-world reverb experience.

Thanks for the great demo Stephan! I know you wanted to try it with the expression pedal at NAMM😝
Cheers, gang! And hey, NAMM is never the right place to test gear properly anyway 😂This pedal is just otherworldly amazing now. CV truly blows the cave wide open and sends you weightless into outer space. It's just a blast to explore and has become an instrument in its own right now. Kudos!
@@thepedalzone Hello! Would you confirm that the V3 has a trails on/off switch?
@@xavierdubois1966 You can turn on/off trails (since V2). Quick tip for the future: the manuals are available online and provide those informations ;)
I'm super excited about this one. One of my all-time favorite ambient reverbs just levelled up and became an instrument all in its own right. Afterneath V3 is crazy versatile and inspiring, especially when used together with a CV sequencer or expression pedal. Hope you enjoyed the demo, and that the sounds inspired you as much as they inspired me. If you had a blast watching this, then please consider leaving a like, comment or sharing the demo with your friends. Your support always means so much. Thank you - Stefan
Fell free to add another demo of riffs with just a guitar, atm I'm unsure how much I can do with just a guitar in comparison t othe old
@@kungfuguitarboarder - There's a lot of just guitar examples in this demo.
@@thepedalzone true but more can't be bad
What's the difference between the v2 and this? The v2 is a bit more expensive where I live
Great video! One question - I'm using the same Korg SQ-1 as you have in this video, for expression control with the Afterneath V3. I'm noticing a couple issues and was curious if you had thoughts/advice:
1) The knob above each step does not offer the same full range of tones that are available with the Drag knob or Moog expression pedal - for example, with the middle mode setting (minor scale) the Drag knob/expression pedal give me around 14 tones across the scale -- but the SQ-1 step knobs only offers 6 tones. Is this to be expected, or is there an issue with the sequencer?
2) The sequencer will not work the with final Octave mode at all. Again, the drag knob and Moog expression pedal work fine with the Octaves setting, but the SQ-1 doesn't offer any secondary tones.
I'm not super-experienced with sequencers, so I can't tell if this is user error or a problem with the SQ-1 or what. I come to you for help because you were obviously able to make some amazing sounds with the SQ-1 hooked up to the Afterneath.
I've literally just spent the afternoon looking for Afterneath v3 demos and couldn't find any decent ones. Lo and behold, here's Stefan with a superb demo of this intriguing pedal. Great work Stefan, you've pushed it to the top of my "to buy" list!
I'm honored to hear I was able to deliver when you needed demos the most 😆☺🙏❤
@@thepedalzone I had watched your interview with Jamie and the brief demo of the Afterneath at NAMM about three hours before you posted this demo and thought "I do wish Stefan would post a more detailed demo"! I logged on again after a break for dinner and there it was! One internet wish fulfilled......😁👍
I ordered the afterneath v3 (in a stunning custom color: blue print on black box) because of this video. It arrived yesterday, and now I'm lost myself in the cave 🤩 THX Stefan for all your passion and heartblood in every video, you're awesome! Greets from switzerland 🇨🇭
By far the best demo of this pedal out there. Likely my next pedal already, and then this just confirms it.
Man! That’s so kind of you to say. Thank you ❤️🙏
I’ve watched most of your demos, but this might have blown my mind the most! So many clever and cool applications of a reverb pedal that I never would’ve dreamed of. Awesome, awesome, awesome stuff as always!
Oh wow! I’m super humbled to hear that. Really awesome to hear you found the demo inspiring ❤️🙏
By far the best demo I’ve seen of this pedal.
Oh my! Thank you SO MUCH!
I am so psyched for this! I can't wait to get my hands on one (at some point). I am especially excited since I discovered that I have room on my board to accommodate the expression pedal plug. At first, I thought that it wasn't going to be possible and I was going to miss out on that. But, it will happen. Awesome review as always.
Awesome to hear you're psyched about it. It's a wonderful pedal, and you can definitely do a lot of cool stuff with the expression capabilities 😊
This demo is incredible, thanks for broadening my horizons of what's possible with this toy!
Really means a lot that you liked the demo! It's such a cool pedal!
great job. been loving my v3 the past few days. cheers
Happy to hear the pedal is inspiring you as well these days
The demo I’ve been waiting for ❤️
Awww, man! Thank you! That makes me happy to hear.
A lot of icy sounds here, full of nostalgia. ❤️ Your love for this device is transcending your musical experiments. Thanks for the journey. And that Ebow magic! Makes me think of Daniel Cavanagh from Anathema.
Awwwww! Thank you so much for that barrage of kindness. I’m truly blown away ❤️ Honored that the final jam gave you some Anathema associations. Absolutely adore that band!
Stefan, your channel is my go-to source for pedal research. There are a few reasons why this is so.
First, you begin each demo with a clean guitar tone. If I click on a demo and the host is shredding away, that's an automatic pass.
Second, you impart just enough information when you talk. You never go on and on and on about the product you are showing.
Third, you let the pedal do the talking. Your text explaining the functions is perfect. As an old geezer, (66) this is perfect. I can pause and consider your helpful text on the subject.
Well done, sir!
Thank you for being very detailed in what you are doing!
Thank you! Means a lot you enjoy all the tiny details that go into something like this 😊
Amazing work! Your demos give me so much creative inspiration 🔥
I’m deeply honored by your kind words. Thank you ❤️🙏
Brilliant. As always, just brilliant. This will be the 5th EQD pedal out of my 11 pedals thanks to your well thought out reviews and demonstration.
Oh wow! Thank you. Deeply honored you found the demo inspiring and helpful ❤ You absolutely can't go wrong with an Afterneath. It's an iconic EQD pedal for a reason.
Which 5 ya got? I got the plumes and afterneath, but I traded in my phaser and avalanche run for an empress echo system which I love
I swear, you are the best out there for testing pedals.
So great to see a demo of this pedal that explores the possibilities of CV input. You opened my eyes to what the v3 can really do.
The CV capabilities are what truly makes this pedal special. So much potential there if you have a decent CV controller. I’m really happy you enjoyed the demo. Means a lot 🙏
Great stuff man. Was looking forward to seeing your demo on the new version of the Afterneath and it did not disappoint. Playing was inspired as usual.
Oh man! Thank you so much ❤️
Wow, this sounds unreal! Amazing demo dude!
Thank you so much, my friend. Means a lot to me 🙏
I just bought this pedal, and your video is so helpful!
That makes me really happy! ❤
Awesome demo, Stefan. I think you just convinced me that this is the next pedal I am getting :D
So cool! Really happy you enjoyed the demo and found it inspiring 😊 Og endnu sejere at ens gamle interaktionslærer fra Multimediedesigner-uddannelsen ser med. Jeg blev altid så glad når du satte Sigur Rós på i timerne 🙏
Short plate sound is beautiful
Sure is! This thing holds so many stunning tones
It's like the mysterious and big cavern from before turned into the hidden lair of fairies and magical creatures.
It's so cool ! Thanks for the magic ❤️
The cave has definitely grown deeper and full of new paths, each revealing new sonic worlds within the cave. Happy you enjoyed the magical carpet ride ❤
That is a great way to describe it.
Hehehe
Damn another fab demo!! I have V2 and love it thanks to you. Not sure about V3 yet got a few other pedals ahead of it. Thanks fro producing such high end sonics!!
Thank you so much for the kind words ❤️🙏
Just ordered this! I'm excited
I’m excited to hear that 😊🙌 It’s a super rad pedal 🧙♂️
Nice demo, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
My life suddenly feels incomplete without this pedal! Awesome demo :D

Awesome, man! 🎛❤️
Thank you 😊🙏
Your demos are excellent, showing what the pedals are capable of without superflous talking or playing.
I watched your demo on the OBNE Dark Star, and I really need one on my board.
Thank you! Means a lot to me!
That little jam at the end with the E-Bow was really something special, Stefan.
Oh man! Thank you so much. Had a blast making that composition
The world needs more people like you, Stephan. Thanks for being awesome.
You’re too kind, man. Thank you for watching the channel and helping make this a positive place through your kind comments ❤️🙏
I was worried that I was gonna see something that made me feel the need to replace my V2, but as cool as the extra features are, there's nothing there that I really need, so that's cool. Well demoed, Stefan!
V3 has trails. Didn’t really touch on that in the demo. Don’t know if that’s important to you. But yeah, Afterneath is awesome no matter the version. Happy you liked the demo
My brother , you put out THE best pedal videos on UA-cam . Everyone else should just stop trying ! Beautiful playing , you need to make an album for us to chill to while we study theory ☕️ . Thanks for being rad !
Oh my! That's insanely kind of you to say. Thank you so much ❤🙏
Amazing Pedal...Amazing Channel!!!
Thanks a lot!
Great video as always! I have the first version without the mode knob but is still a great pedal!
Afterneath is amazing no matter the version 😊👌
Just upgraded my v2 for one of these, excited to check it out
Nice! Personally I think the V3 is the best Afterneath version so far. You're gonna love it!
Very cool!
Cheers!
just what i was looking for .. everything the band " Explosion in the Sky" sounds like.. awesome demo
This one will definitely give you all the EITS atmospheres you can handle 😊 Happy you liked the demo 🙏🧙♂️
Your unique (the only word I can come up with to describe what I think of your playing); well beautiful too, has coerced me into becoming a subscriber.
Wow, thank you so much for those incredibly kind words and for subscribing. Means the world to me!
That's incredible! I'm amazed that such a small pedal can be packed with so much versatile functionality. I wonder if other EQD pedals are going to get the V3 treatment.
Cheers, man! Happy you enjoyed the sounds 😊
Wow! Love that Jennings T-style
1:24 Really cool you did that with the CV sequencer. I've thought about doing that myself, but for the lack of a CV sequencer and a dearth of pedals with expression ports.
Jennings just make amazing guitars. I love it so much 🙌 Happy you enjoyed the Sequencer examples. CV is truly a powerful thing. Completely transforms this pedal 😊
I have the dispatch master and this seems like the perfect companion for when I want to delve into the depths. Great demo! Already got the Afterneath ordered!
Jesus Christ, this sequencing work is inspiring!
Thank you very very much 🙏
Just placed my order!
Very cool!
Even though I don't know WTF is happening most of the time, I love it!
So excited to see your notification pop up.
Thanks for being a part of the notification squad ☺
Maybe this was a demo for the SQ-1, how cool.
I can't believe you did all this with basically just one pedal and some controllers. I bet you could fill an entire album with all the lush sounds here. Really great stuff, Stefan!
Thank you so much, my friend ❤️❤️❤️
I thought I had enough reverb pedals, including the Zoia, but I've had my eye on Afterneath for a while too. This seals the deal for me. GREAT demo. Thanks!
Afterneath V3 and Zoia together are amazing. I love using Zoia as a creative CV controller with the Afterneath V3, as shown multiple times throughout this demo. You're in for bucket loads of fun 😊 And it means a lot to me that you enjoyed the demo!
do you find you can get good reverb sounds from the Zoia? I'm looking for a reverb but also love all the crazy stuff the Zoia can do, basically limitless sounds!
I was just about considering selling my Afterneath pedal, as I strugle make it fit with my playing style.
But now, after watching this; I'll give another go...
This is the only demo where the person demoing it, actually is able to get something musical out of the expression control.
With every other demo, my reaction has always been: "Why would you want to do that?".
With this one my reaction is: "that's really cool!"
I really love the Korg SQ1. Didn't thought to use it with an Afterneath, so great. May be i will use it with a Hazarai
This is a good as hell demo.
Thank you very very much 🙏
Time to upgrade the V2 for the V3! I would love to see you demo that e-bow too with a variety of pedals, it seems like an awesome tool for creating ambient sounds.
Happy you dig the sounds of the V3 😊 And yeah, an Ebow is great for stretchy ambient tones and soundscapes
Nice just got one for my electric kora
Well that sounds like a fun combo! Enjoy :)
Your playing is boss
Thank you!
absolute chills at 5:08
❤️❤️❤️
You just started the demo with my only two must-have pedals I know, that's a KO for me lol
Flawless victory!
When you got it …you got it. AND THIS GUY HAS IT
Finally!
I know, right!?
Putting a Fuzzalo in front of the Afterneath is explosive! Love this thing. I don't have the newest version but I have two of the original ones on my board! I love them that much! 😂
Afterneath just loooooves fuzz pedals! Great to hear you're blasting your way into the stratosphere with your Afterneaths
Thank you so much Stephan. You single handily convinced me that I needed the Afterneath V3 and I haven't looked back.
However...Can you please tell me what kind of cable I need to sequence it from my Zoia? I just can't seem to figure it out and it's driving me nuts.
Thanks for your amazing content. Keep doing what you do.
Hey there Stefan! First of all, thanks for this stunning demo! I've been watching your videos for a while now. I was thinking about getting a EQD Afterneath V3 and thought about asking you about your experience with the pedal. Specifically I wonder, how the Afterneath works with the OBNE Expression Ramper (not the Slider), since the Drag-Knob seems to move in steps. Do you have any experience on that? Furthermore I wonder how the Afterneath reacts to a complicated Delay in front (like a Source Audio Nemesis Delay with e.g. Pitch-Shifted Delays). If I understood it correctly, the Afterneath creates most of its Reverb-Sounds via very small/short delay lines, so it would be interesting to know if it works with complicated Delays. If you have an experience with that I'm interested! Otherwise have a great weekend! Greetings, Morris :)
I came here to help the algorithm. Many years!
I am either considering this pedal or the Transmisser (which seem to be discontinued for some reason) which one do you recommend? I play synths mostly, but I want to play the guitar soon :D
Awesome demo as always btw
Fantastic video! Question, at 5:04 when you move the expression slider to the mid point the guitar sounds like it has a volume fade on it. Is this from the afterneath pedal alone, or did you add volume swells in your playing at this point? either way, great sound!
Loving that Jennings ...I need this pedal also
I love that Jennings as well 😊 Phenomenal guitar.
@@thepedalzone I'm thinking about ordering one from them but there is so many options it's overwhelming
@@thepedalzone would love an info you can share on that Jennings
It’s just a stock version of one of their black Navigators. Only thing I got customized was a matching headstock and pickguard
This pedal sounds awsome, I have a korg sq-1 and was wondering what settings you used on it in the earlier portion of the video?
Once again I thoroughly enjoyed that.... so I love the shimmery ambient nature of that pedal, if I have the dispatch master which also has reverb how do I use these two pedals together without it getting overwhelming on the reverb side of things.... I assume your answer is don’t use the reverb part of the dispatch master if you have the afterneath as I would be kinda redundant, right ? Thanks
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES V3
Happy you’re excited 😊 Hope you enjoyed the demo
Your videos are always edited so clean. What editing app do you use??
Thanks! I use Adobe Premiere Pro
wow they really pimped this pedal up
They totally did 😊👍
I swear you could make a shoebox full of tinfoil sound amazing.
I keep coming back to this video. Finally ordered the pedal :)
This is sick! I love the CV sequencing from ZOIA to the Afterneath drag function. Can you send sequence MIDI out from the zoia as well? I was thinking send CC messages to a Meris pedal to modulate the filter on Enzo or the pitch on Hedra. That would be amazing
Cheers 🙏 Happy you enjoyed the bits with Zoia. It’s such a powerful pedal. And yes, you can do the same via MIDI that I did with CV here. Check out my full Zoia demo. It shows it in action as a MIDI controller together with a Meris Ottobit 😊
7:40 I totally feel the RED WEED coming for me!
Awesome!
I want a 4-5 minute version of that jam at the end!
Haha! Cheers. Really happy you enjoyed the tune, bud!
great video as usual!! I will shot...Afterneath or Minim?
I love your channel. Your guitar playing is great, any music out there to stream/download?
Thank you very much! I don’t have any solo music out. But you’re welcome to check out my old bands Sky Architects and Cloud Anthems. You can find both on Bandcamp, Spotify and iTunes
ThePedalZone will do!
I wasn't shure if this pedal was for me, as I'm new to this ambient/lofi/psychedelic guitar stuff, but got one anyway and so glad I did. This beast can do from subtle hall/plate like reverbs to almost anything. Combined with the OBNE dark star you can get huge ambient drone tones
Nice! I still need to check out the Dark Star.
I am also considering the Dark Star. But the EQD Dispatch Master may work its way onto my board as well.
@@garthosborn8400 I’ve had both and highly recommend either…or better yet, get both lol
@@yungstaben7675 I ended up buying the Walrus Audio Slo. That was the first reverb pedal that made me go, "whoa, I need that!"
I listened to tons of demos and went with my first instinct. I will gey a Dark Star later.
The dispatch master is amazing- it’s an always on pedal for me. There’s not a bad sounding setting on it.
Great demo as always my friend. A little off topic, but what is the other pedal in the thumbnail of this video?
Thank you! Really happy you enjoyed it 🙏 The pedal in the background is the Lichtlaerm Audio Trugbild Chorus/Vibrato
Hi Stefan, i just watched your how to make your guitar sound like a synth keyboard.
I have the afterneath and a swollen pickle fuzz pedal. Any idea if the afterneath can help in making aybth sounds? What else do i need? Im very new to pedals. Thanks!
This is awesome!! Do you think you need an expression pedal to get the most of this V3 version - if I’m making a small rig without expression, should I just get a V1 or V2 version?
100% still go for the V3. You get soft-click relay switching, instead of the clunky and super loud 3PDT switches on the V1 and V2. You also get momentary triggering, as well as the ability for buffered bypass, which lets your reverb trails decay naturally when you turn off the pedal. The V3 is just a better product overall, compared to the older versions, at least in my book 😊
what is the pedal far left at time index 11:06?
Great review! Whats that black pedal to the left on your cover photo? The one with the skull inbetween two halves of a person. Or @ 11:05 Thanks!
Happy you liked the demo, man. Means a lot 😊The pedal in the background is the Lichtlaerm Audio Trugbild Chorus/Vibrato
Hi just beought my Earthquake afterneath and I love it but I have a question.
I brought a Moog ep-3 expression pedal to go with it.How should I set the ep-3 switch on the bottom? and where should I set the dial on the side of the ep-3 to get the most out of my pedal?
You should set the switch to Other. The dial determines the minimum position of the pot. So if you want a complete sweep from zero to max, then you should set the dial to 0.
sounds great. wondering if it can do less shimmery, darker type sounds though?? thanks for the demo :)
It’s a individual ear thing. Even if he tried the human ear probably just gravitates to the direction that calls.
Can anybody comment if Earthquaker have fixed the volume drop issue this pedal had in the previous two versions? Thanks.
love this demo! hey, ?, can the afterneath go directly into the korg sq1 or do you need an expression pedal out?
Happy you liked the demo! You can go directly out of the SQ-1 and into the Afterneath via a mini-jack to jack converter cable.
How do you connect pedals to the sq-1? I wanted to try it
If you only had an EQD Dispatch Master and wanted an upgrade/addition to your ambient trails, which reverb/delay/both pedal would you get first? I’m thinking about the slo/fathom, cirrus or afterneath, but maybe you have some other idea?
Cirrus is incredible bang for the buck, so that one will definitely give you the most versatility out of the ones mentioned. Afterneath will give you amazing icy cascading and slightly granular ambient textures to mess around with. The perfect contrast to the warm organic ambience of the Dispatch Master. I don't have any experience with the Fathom or Slö, so can't give any insight there.
Fun to see a guitarist use the SQ-1. It's going to be interesting to watch the evolution of this merging of synth gear with guitar and probably other instruments soon to. Vocal and synths has been a thing with the vocoder for some time, but I suspect eurorack has opened doors and broken some barriers that might be comparable to the revolutions and experimental stuff happening in the music and art of the 60's and 70's.
This AN V3 is probably a result or consequence of the AN eurorack module they recently made, and also Zoia is a modular synth in itself. Also Strymon just made their version of a module for guitarpedals/line level integration with eurorack so I suspect many more will be be infected with GAS as companies probably will invent even more new breathtaking hybrid equipment and instruments and at a much larger scale.
On another hand, the economy for most people are going to be strained for a while so we might also see more people utilizing abandoned or "out of date" stuff and maybe more diy to?
Amazing that only an LFO can do so much modulation in this thing, no wonder there is a wizard on it. So much yet fairly simple and user friendly compared to really advanced pedals : o !!! This pedal excites me far more than the AN Eurorack module.
Maybe you should try to make a chain with the whole family, V1, V2 V3?
Let's say they are three bears, so what pedal would be Goldilocks?
Anyway, great as always Stefan
Take care and stay safe.
I use my SQ-1 quite a bit. Used it in other demos before this one. If a pedal has CV capabilities then you gotta take full advantage of it 😊To answer your last question, the V3 is the goldilocks. Even if you're not interested in going all crazy with CV modulation and sequencing as I did, then you still get reverb trails, flexi-switching and expression control in the V3, which are features everybody can appreciate. Just the fact that this one has trails makes it better than the old ones 👍
@@thepedalzone Yes I realize my three bears analogy does not make that much sense as the oldest bear is the biggest and therefore "more" bear, while when it comes to the pedals it is the youngest pedal that is "more". I got a Warped Vinyl HI-Fi that I often feed with a five step sequence that is also clocked in another tempo than everything else. By manipulating that clock source, an lfo, and triggering this clock with another lfo the modulation appears somewhat random. At least it's unpredictable.
By setting "length" to the max, is the infinite sustain a true permanent freeze? And if so, can you play over/solo over the frozen note clearly?
Not really. It just gets super loud.
Can you hear in the amp when you turn it on and off like clicking noise or anything minus effect?
man! how in heavens name did you connect the Korg Sq-1 into the expression pedal quarter inch and make those sounds!? can you please make a video showing us how you do it!?
Hi Stefan ! I bought this pedal and just got the Korg SQ-1 after watching your video 🥇 Total noob question but , are you using a 1/4trs for the pedal into 1/8 inch ts for Korg ? Trying to figure out the right one to get . Thanks so much 😊
I'm just using a 3.5mm mini-jack cable with a 1/4" converter plug on one end 😊 Hope that helps!
ThePedalZone 🙌🏻🙌🏻🥇🥇🥇🥇
I got an Afterneath v3 but after watching this video I'm craving the Zoia more.
Zoia is an incredible device. Can practically become anything you want it to be. I've found myself using it more as a creative CV and MIDI controller than an actual effects unit. Empress killed it with that one.
Thanks for the demo but, I'm going with the TC Electronic Hall of Fame 2 because it's programmable and stereo in and out since I play in stereo with a Crate 150 Power Block which is a stereo amp head.
What’s that pedal in the back left in your thumbnail?
Lichtlaerm Audio Trugbild Chorus/Vibrato
The Old Blood Noise Endeavors - Expression Slider is compatible ? I'd look at picking both up they sound great.
Yes, the OBNE Expression Slider is compatible with the Afterneath V3. You actually see me use them together a bunch of times in this demo 😊👍 Happy you liked the sounds
I've seen the V2 a while back and I own a Transmisser... but BOY do I want one of these puppies! That added expression port and those new reverb profiles that add a new depth to tone refinement & creation... I GOTTA GET ME ONE!
Happy to hear you're excited about it. It's a rad reverb pedal. EQD truly made it even better and also more affordable at the same time. It's a nobrainer if you're into ambient textures and music.
