When I read those books I didn't even take into account that the naming conventions could be confusing if you don't know French, but then there was Allen 😂His pronunciations had me cackling, so much fun. Anyway, I have a feeling that book 2 will be a bigger hit for you, can't wait to hear your thoughts! 🤩
May was my best reading month in awhile, in both quantity and quality. Obviously quality is what actually matters. *Fantasy* Kithimar 1: Age of Ash / Daniel Abraham - I want to read this again after the next book comes out because Abraham is so good at layering and foreshadowing. But as is I really enjoyed it. Sammish stole the book for me but I also liked Alys' arc. Abraham's character work is so underrated. *Grimdark Fantasy* Black Company / Glen Cook (re-read) Black Company 2: Shadows Linger Black Company 3: White Rose - I'm glad I gave this series another chance. I appreciated Book 1 more on re-read, retried Shadows Linger and it was excellent and so was White Rose. *Steampunk Fantasy* Shadows of the Apt 1: Empire in Black & Gold - It's been a bit since I last read Tchaikovsky and I'm glad I'm finally reading his Fantasy epic. BUGS! *Thriller* No Country for Old Men / Cormac McCarthy - Anton Chigurh, what a villain. The Wasp Factory / Iain Banks - Banks is my personal favourite Sci-Fi author so thought I'd finally give his non Sci-Fi work a go. Pretty messed up. Still dunno how I feel about the climax and resolution though.
Project Hail Mary was fantastic, the ending made me sad and happy at the same time. I don't remember if I have a physical copy, but the audiobook was SO good. Definitely going to check out Empire of Pain and Say Nothing. They sound really good. I've felt an itch to get some quality nonfiction in but wasn't sure where to start so thanks for the quick synopsis (I know I'm late to the party on Empire of Pain).
In May I finished «The Dervish House» by Ian McDonald, «The Little Emperors» by Alfred Duggan, «The Veiled Throne» by Ken Liu (book #3 in the «Dandelion Dynasty», it is a real chunker at about 1000 pages and I had to reread several pages and paragraphs, they are so good!) and I also read «Sailor of the Sea of Fate» by Michael Moorcock (in the «Elric Saga»), and I see now my edition also included «The Weird of the Wolf». He is not the existentialist hero Conan and many S&S heroes, as a doomed hero of Greek Tragedy by larger forces then himself, or a self-destructive Byronic Romantic Anti-hero! So for me «The Dreaming City» is the most central Elric story, the tragedy all his stories turns around. I only bought one book, «The Children of Gods and Fighting Men» by Shauna Lawless, with the very lovely red cover design! But I will get to «Bold Ascension» by Vaughn Roycroft and «The Prophet of Edan» by Philip Chase as soon as they are released! I had to push «Speaking Bones» by Ken Liu (book #4 and final book of the «Dandelion Dynasty») and «The Conscience of the King» by Alfred Duggan (Digital Redd: Set during the Anglo Saxon Migration and the creation of the Kingdom of Wessex) from my May TBR (at least starting them), but have started on them just now!
Yay for the Project Hail Mary audiobook! I agree, I also loved it so much! You’ve heard right: Ryan Gosling bought the rights and will be starring in the movie, as well. 😊
What a fun trip for the kiddos! Sword in the Stone is one of my favorite movies. I'd like to read both of TH White's Arthur books. And there's a biography of him by Sylvia Townsend Warner that's meant to be good. I've started Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors trying to catch up.
PHM was one of my most enjoyable reads last year. Glad you enjoyed it. I didn't have much time for reading in May so only got through Bear Head (Adrian Tchaikovsky) and The Lost Sisters (Holly Black). Bear Head was a brilliant sequel to Dogs Of War, I hope you pick it up soon. I've also just finished The Mysterious Island (Jules Verne) which was a little slow to start, but I really enjoyed it. Especially with the connection to one of his other books. (not saying which in case people haven't read much Jules Verne.
Craddock's series and Project Hail Mary are both on my TBR and you've made me so excited for the latter one that I can borrow from my library! The other one will be trickier for me to get and will probably be read on my Kindle when the time comes. It sounded very interesting to me and I've heard you've corrected Allen's French pronounciation in your first discussion which makes me want to watch it even more (I'm Québécoise, so it'll be hilarious to me for sure 😂), but I'm in the middle of too many Fantasy series right now, I'd feel stressed to start something new right away. 🥴

Wow! I have read all these except the romance! I just read We don’t know ourselves and I feel Say Nothing handles the subject so much better. We Don’t Know is told from one man’s personal experiences but I just didn’t think it even came close to the power or thoughtful provocation that Say Nothing did “effortlessly.”🫰🏻 I have read all of the Risen Kingdoms trilogy and have really liked all of them. They were all B+ /A- reads. I felt like I was with the 3 Musketeers in a sci-fi world. ♥️ The Year of Magical Thinking was a reread earlier this year. I first read it after my mom passed away. It was still poignant and gave me words to express emotion and thoughts that I just didn’t know how to express prior.♥️ And PHM! Funny, scary, adventurous, sobering- it kinda has everything! ♥️
