Steve, I feel that your "Lockdown Woodworking" series is one of the best things to come from the pandemic. I really enjoy the casual format and behind the scenes insight into your projects. I hope they continue to be worthwhile even after the lockdowns are lifted.
Question... Why is the bigbox store "soul crushing"? Is it just during the pandemic, or is it generally that way?
I plan to replace the doors on my grandmother's storage building this summer.. This video will be helpful in planning this effort.

You know what I really enjoy about your videos? You make it seem like you’re talking to a friend. In this video especially. When you went around to show a couple past projects, like the doors and compost area, I say (to myself) “oh, yeah, I remember when you made that” like we’re hanging out. Thanks.

In the olden days, screen doors for a house were made of wood, they always warped! So people would always buy a cross brace with a turn buckle in the middle to adjust the warp out. Still sold on Amazon; Stanley National Hardware S748-264 CD1739 Screen Door Brace in Zinc, about 9 dollars.

Hi Steve, I'm really enjoying the Lockdown series. I'm in the east of England so don't get to see them until some 15 hours after you post them. I hope you read this before you start the doors. You will find there is less chance of the doors sagging if the diagonal brace runs down to the hinge side, rather than up, as your sketch. And if the diagonal is a tight fit into the corner, this will help too.
All the best and stay safe.

Steve, thanks for making these videos. I don't have a lot of time or space for woodworking (my current detached garage with uneven wood brick floors and no electricity is not up to the task). When I am able to get some done, it's very rewarding. But even if I *never* do another woodworking project, I'll still continue to watch these videos. You're an excellent teacher, with a great attitude, and your honesty and candor is refreshing. Even the "dad jokes" are endearing. I know it can be tough to come up with new content all the time, but this series is great, and I really enjoy watching people design and create things. In fact, my family teases me (in a good natured way) when there's no new Steve video and I'm bummed out because of that. In any event, keep up the good work, man! Much appreciated.

We actually were talking about just this the other day with some friends on Twitter. So many of my techie friends in big cities have all been under self-lockdown/haven't driven since February. Car manuals mention how long you can go before the batteries go flat and some of them really hate being left along for even two months. It's going to catch many work-from-home folks with 10 y/o cars off guard when they finally try to start it up. Glad you were able to get yours out.

Hey Steve, there's a release on the shifter console itself, usually under a hidden little pry-away cover. Pop that cover out, press the release button and the transmission will let you shift out of park without the motor running. It's really easy to do and it's like a 2 minute thing to get a dead automatic car moving under human power.

Steve, Think about putting the strip on the back of the left door with some sort of a pin to the floor and the header to keep it locked in place. This might keep it from warping. The right door would seal against the strip. Just open the right door first and the left one when needed.

I really appreciate you continuing this series of shop projects during the pandemic; I'm always looking forward to the next video!
Regarding your compost bins: I built a similar, three-bin system about five years ago that has worked very well for our needs. The first year, we load all the food scraps, yard waste, etc. into the first bin. We also have chickens, bunnies, and guinea pigs, so all their waste and shavings go in there, too, and it easily gets filled to the brim over the following year. The second year, we put all of that into the second bin around mid May to continue decomposing. The third year, we transfer all that to the third bin about the same time, and by midsummer we have beautiful compost ready for use. We had a landscaper here last week doing some work for us and I showed him what we had. He was amazed with our results and told us that one of the local nurseries was charging something like $60 for 1-2 cubic feet of this material (we live about a half-hour north of Boston, MA).

Just a hint before you build the doors, your cross braces should be angled on the lower sideof the angle towards your hinges. After shrinking and drying it helps your door or gate for that matter stay as close to true as it was when first made. Love following the channel

I made the external square, put lumber under square and traced lines to cut for brace.... I lined up my first cut with the board perpendicular to my miter fence, mined it up and cut it.... I then turned board to place it against fence and snuck up to next line.... thought to do this when I had a cut my saw couldn’t turn to... prob a common cut for experienced people.... the first cut against the saw is weird, I have someone hold back of piece..... then I drill pocket holes in both edges, perfect fit

Part of the warping problem also relates to the paint job. Any door should be painted all around the front/back/bottom/top if you paint it you closes the fibers on the wood which allows the wood to breath. Best is to use a stain finish or a laque suitable for outdoor

Hi Steve. Your can very easily fix the warp in the existing door. When you frame up a house to get the panels square you attach a steel strap with tensioner in a cross (across the back of the panel).....by adjusting the tension on the straps you can pull any panel into square. Super quick easy and cheap......just my 5 cents worth. Cheers..>Greg

Hi Steve, I would never have thought to do this but I have found a flaw in your plans for the door. I have built a couple of garden doors myself. The across panels at the back to stabilise the doors should move from lower at the door frame to higher in the middle. This way the structural forces are better distributed towards the strong frame instead of the weak middle part. Like that they dont sink too much. (I hope to have described it properly) Love your channel, mate ;-) Cheers from Germany

@@arneberg6814 Generally I think the diagonal direction in that way for compression is correct. But since it looks like the door is constructed on top of the panel not an inset panel, the direction of the diagonal for compression shouldnt matter. The panel supports for compression, and that diagonal board is there to help with twisting.

  • @dogface6040
    @dogface6040 4 роки тому

I think your original idea of offset rabbets at the door closure is more elegant than a closure strip. (I did my den doors with OR's and they look nice) Something to be aware of with lumber, particularly framing (eg, most 2x pieces, usually a "fir" or equal): the wood is intentionally wet/wetter than 4S wood: more moisture= more flexibility, and it's easier to fit pieces in the frame matrix if they bend a bit. Once they're in the frame, the movement is constrained as the wood dries, so warping isn't a worry in matrices such as framed stud walls. But if you don't constrain the 2x, it can warp dramatically as it dries, which looks like what happened to one of your doors. Diagonal direction: either way works about the same. In every construct, some members are in tension, others in compression, so you never escape having both effects simultaneously in a construct. Since it appears you are attaching the 1x members to an inner core (ply or comp? couldn't tell from the pics), the core actually is going to be the main structural member (unlike a door frame where the stiles and rails are the main structurals, with the inner panel often floating). If that core panel is some kind of comp material, paint the living hell out of it: four coats wouldn't be misplaced (and forget that spray can stuff: brush on a latex or equal for weather protection).

Usually, a small shop produce waaay too much wood shaving to result in a good compost. You get too much carbon in the end result for it to be healthy to your plants, you need a good nitrogen/carbon ratio. So it would be only a few cups of sawdust for 5 gallons of kitchen scraps. Also wood shavings and sawdust take way longer to break down than leaves and kitchen scraps.

    Hi Steve,
With the composting, have you considered asking friends/neighbours to save their kitchen scraps for you (if they don't compost themselves)?

I had to learn about the interlock override once I no longer had a standard transmission. I completely understand how frustrating it is when you don't know the tricks. Guess you need an Automobiles for Mere Mortals.

Put that strip covering the gap between the doors on the inside. It looks better (IMHO) and makes mounting hardware easier.

FYI that strip between the doors is called an astragal ... If needed they sell them, look them up and see what they look like. Probably not needed on a shed.

For what it will cost to have the dealer look at it, you can buy a decent battery charger and bring the battery back to life.
Also, if the car continues to sit for long stretches, charge the battery once a week to keep it from getting so low that it can't be revived.
My "fun" car sits in the garage for months on end, and I had to replace the battery every other year. I finally got smart and hooked up a battery charger on a timer to top it off periodically. The batteries last much longer now.
    Good luck!

Jumper cables... and owners manual. There’s a way to get the car in neutral without requiring power... and if you can set up dados you can change your battery.

I've live in Lakewood for 43 years.
I do have one "quibble" with your design. The cross-braces should be oriented the opposite direction. They should go from non-hinge side (top) to hinge side (bottom). This will properly transfer the force generated by the weight of the door to the hinge nearest the bottom. Think of it sort of like a partial truss. IMO, of course.

Battery is a very simple fix. Also, consider those lithium battery jumpers. No need for jumper cables.

If you look around the gear shift for your wife's car, there should be a button, usually concealed beneath a small panel. Pressing that will let you shift into neutral without power.

Instead of making new compost bins you could put a divider in one (for alternating year to year) and ditch the other bin.

The hardboard is not water proof and will rot quickly from the bottom edge where rain water can enter. It needs some form of drip edge or groove to keep the water away.

I think if you start re-examining what is compostable, you might find that you actually have a ton of waste that could be going in your compost. Egg shells, coffee grounds (including the filter paper), teabags, amazon boxes, loose leaves from the yard, trimmed tree branches, strawberry tops, the garden plants you rip out at the end of the season, bones from a rotisserie chicken, etc.

Believe it or not, yesterday I had a weird dream where Steve was at me in the old flat I used to live and talked about stuff. At one point I mention that his Hungarian pronounciation is really good and I was proud to have one of the best woodworker on youtube as my friend. Usually when I talk to English people in my dream I speak in English but this time Steve talked in Hungarian. Funny :)

AAA or other roadside assistance can come to your house and replace the battery. Had the same thing happen to my car last month and they came out and fixed it in less than 30 minutes.

Just a thought Steve: The stability of the frame would benefit if one of the cross braces was installed opposing the other. "Bottom brace: \ Top brace: / " I think it's called Z-Frame construction. Otherwise it looks like a great design! I'm enjoying this series. Keep up the good work.

I guess the easiest way to deal with those compost bins is to remove one, and use the side of the removed one as a separator in the middle of the first one. In 30 minutes or less you get two smaller compost bins.

For those who do not know, Red Rocks was a favorite of the Beatles, Eagles, and several other top bands. Red Rocks used to be out in the boonies, but now the residents in nearby houses complain about the loud concerts. Some bands ignore the sound level limits and crank as loud as they can.
