I love studies. One of the things most fine artists do in expensive art schools is copy/study masters, so it's just the same here. I don't think any real artists would ever just assume you're copying. And I love these kinds of videos ❤
Exactly! One of my art teachers made us draw so many Picasso art turned upside down. This has been beneficial to my own art to this day as it changed the way we view shapes and perspective.
Thank you for showing the resistance and struggles of learning new skills and staying open to dtudying other artists! I often think that seeing the process informs us a lot more than being presented with the finished outcome. I also feel like I'm reading a diary of some kind, visual thoughts! It's inspiring :)
Hey, studies are how artists learn. Don't worry about people. I grew up surrounded by Edward Gorey's art, and to this day when I want to just practice my inking, I start with him. I'm not trying to be him, emulate him, or anything like that - my work is so far from his - but his style has always informed mine. That is how this art thing works and how you develop your skills.
I love imagining young Fran reading manga in Chile having absolutely no idea what's in store for her later in life. How fricken cool is it that you are doing this!? Gosh, I'm so happy for you! I love seeing good things happen for you. You put in so much hard work and deserve it all!
14:45 For curly hair, keep it dense and super coiled at the start and middle. At the end leave it loosely curled or slightly wavy instead of coiled ends. I hope it helps. 🙋🏼 Plus weekends are nicer whenever you post, Fran. 🌻💛
I have been following you since your early Berlin days and l noticed you have really come into your own since moving to New York, especially since you came out. You seem so much more comfortable and confident in your style, your art and simply yourself 💙 Congrats on your success, we are so proud of you and cheer you on from across the pond!
6:38 This is literally a POV of me studying textures and patterns in my drawing classes before college. Thank you for reminding me of how much I loved it 🧡
I’m so so so happy for you and your project 🎉 i smiled alone at the beginning of the video because your joy was communicative through the video 😂 i’m super exited that you’re taking us through your process and that we can see the outcome of your beautiful project 😁
Really love how you overlap all your studies together over the page like that so they are all connected. So joyful to watch you sketch, it creates a sense of deep comfort. Congratulations on your amazing news! 🎉
I love art studies. It's so fascinating to see how different people do similar things. I am a musician and covering someone else's songs is frequently how we learn and how we wander into our own styles. I REALLY like the books you were looking at too. AMAZING art!
I love Tezuka! He had such an evolution from doing family friend series like Astro Boy , to fully adult series like Dororo. I love the range in his creativity. :) Also, Black Jack is my favorite series by him. I would recommend the 1990s anime adaptation as well.
Oh gosh, it is Black Jack! I was wondering why the character in the book looked so familiar. That was my fav animation when I was younger. Gosh, that brought out many memories lol I was obsessed!
Just as you mentioned your pen I was thinking 'what pen is that', love when you share your art supplies. Congratulations on getting an agent! You are an inspiration :) x
I know see that my comment implies that i somehow heard Fran mention the pen name etc, sorry about that she doesn't mention the name and I too would like to know what pen it is, apologies for the confusing sentence! @faeriesmak @@anaardila6121
Could be Pilot G-Tec-C4 (BLGC4) or Pentel Slicci BG202AO. She once mentioned those in a video as her favorites, Pentel being a newer favorite. IF she is using the same stuff - that was probably a year ago and pens look so alike 😄 Edit: I checked again, here I can see a Pilot logo on the pen and the video I mentioned is from nine months ago, "reorganizing my studio cause I wanna feel whole".
I love getting this insight on how you are learning and growing as an artist -- it has been fascinating to see you experiment and learn. Also enjoying the quiet videos that I can play in the background while I study -- it feels like we're just working together somehow.
really enjoying how often we are getting ASMR style drawing videos from you fran, so relaxing to enjoy. also wow, the second book you were practicing with i was fascinated with how many different types of people they were conveying esp with the different head shapes! hope you're well
What you wrote around 6:35-6:47 about copying is so true I can’t help but agree. The best advice anyone gave me is: copy, but copy to learn. Before copying, an artist should find another artist whose works inspire and move him or her. And then try to get a feel for how that work is produced and eventually, add your own touch. Crawl, walk and then run. That’s how an artist comes to his or her own in the real world! I think before a person develops his or her own style, copying is both good and necessary. BIt gives you an idea of how that picture was made. Besides, if we’re being honest, most artists throughout history copied who they called the masters. People who tell you don’t copy more often than not don’t understand how producing art works . Congrats on your good news. By the way 🎉😊
Firstly: OMG congratulations about the agency! Your deserve it! Don't think that you don't deserve it, because you do and this is just the begging! There's a whole big world and amazing conquers coming along for you, for us!!!! We work a lot and we deserve the best!!! Secondly: OMG your glasses are somehow like mine hsuahsuahsua xoxo
7:31 I think using dip pens might also help in achieving similar line effects like those that are in mangas since they’re usually drawn that way at least traditionally. Love the silent vlog/asmr
I would love a video about your schedule! Your videos are always so super informative and inspirational. How do you stay on top of it all, consistently and long term? I am a full time illustrator and I do ok but I know my schedule could be improved. I do all my work for deadlines but then my social media and portfolio stay behind and it seems like i never have the time to do the extra things that could take me to the next level! thank you Fran! Lots of love and congratulations on the literary agent!
What wonderful news!! Congratulations!! I love doing studies just like this - it's a learning process! And if you share it, as long as you credit the artist you studied, I don't think it's copying! It's like learning with a teacher remotely, in a sense, haha! My sketchbooks are filled with reference studies like this, and I always doodle the artist name I was studying into the corners of the pages.
Congrats Fran, this is awesome news! I loved this study video and having your thoughts on how you learn from it. And the books are beautiful as well. It’s really a game changer to have company in the learning process, sharing and inspiration is essential. thank you for being here:)
First off, congratulations! Second, I love your image study! Especially how you note what about the illustration grabbed your attention. Even though I am not an illustrator, I feel like I learned from your noticings.
Thank you for the video! Always when I watch your clips, I got inspired and I'm full of motivation. Now I want to draw, but it is late time haha. You nice, keep going and wish you luck
Congrats Fran! Have been following you for years and I am so amazed by your journey as an artist. Thank you for sharing your session with the sketch studies. Very helpful and inspiring. Motivated me personally to apply your methods.
Hi Fran ! I really enjoyed watching you studied these drawings. I think so useful to do this as an artist and even if it’s just a « study » it’s always fun to see that your own style « pop out » in some way ! 😊 Hope we’ll see more of your drawing studies, it was really interesting. And congrats for the good news ! You deserve it !
Congratulations Fran! So happy for you❤loved this video, just like all your others. Thank you for the skillshare link - I've signed up and can't wait to get started!
omg congrats!!! 🎉 your vlogs are so inspiring and motivating. I love doing those kinds of studies as well. And although I currently don't have a lot of time to do them, your videos keep me motivated for when I finally can go back to them. Gracias ❤
I watched this video I realized that watching UA-cam tutorials isn't enough to be a better at art, studying others art and learning from them is what acutely makes you better 😅
Good to see that your project is going along fine! I wish you all the luck :) Really enjoyed the studies in this vlog, made me want go and pick up a sketchbook too!
I love your studies! I need to do more of this. Intentionally. Learn. I love my sketchbooks, and filling them. But I need more of this. Thanks for sharing your process. 💜
Easily overwhelm humans it's the best description I've heard about us nerds. I love your study sessions Fran, it give me so much peace. (Also, love that outfit girl! Red looks so nice on you
Hershfield was a master of caricature. You mentioned his interesting way of drawing faces. It might be of some help to see the people that he’s drawing, when possible. I can’t speak to all of his subjects, but his old Hollywood cartoons are very good representations. His interpretations are awesome and are within the structure of drawing a caricature.
This was so great, thanks for keeping me company while I did some studies of my own, Fran! Congrats on your agent! Make sense to me that you would be picked up by one of the best publishing houses! Thanks for always sharing your work and the business behind the work. It's inspiring and illuminating (i love that word 💡✨)
Congratulations Fran! That is amazing you have a literary agent. I have written a YA novel, a memoir, and a selection of short stories. I have yet to land an agent but will keep trying! What is your sketchbook in this video? I completely understand how hard you have worked on your graphic novel proposal. Such an exciting new chapter awaits! xxx
