I think inches is used, because its the most common size when describing rim diameters. We use it in germany as well for rims, while we use metric units nearly everywhere
Bildschirmdiagonale auch
Wheels are measured everywhere in inches and tire width in milimiters even in the US, kinda weird.
Car manufacturers use inches as the whloe industry is set up to be in inches, so change would cause so much cost it would cost and cause far too many issues
Yeah its like tv screen sizes, just habit i guess
And screen sizes xD
I cannot overstate my appreciation for the fact that you first aligned the bottom of the wheels while comparing wheel size and then the bottom of the tires when comparing tire size.
The imbalance of the misalignment pissed me off to begin with. I thought "How has he not centred those?", and then when the guidelines came in, it made more sense.. and then when the 17" wheel "realigned", it illustrated the overall difference in diameter better.
@@utetopia1620 absolutely the same thoughts and emotions! Haha.
Felt like a decade without you brother.
I am from Germany, and in Germany, also complete Europa (beside UK) we use Metric System.
But Rims are ALWAYS in Inch. I never saw a Rim that was described in mm.
Rims are in Inches, and Tyres are in mm.
you mean tyres are in mm/%-inch :D
Same in France
@@bingoberra18 yes! Tyre codes are some of the most confusing specifications ever!
Its kind of like with monitors.
Same in Portugal. With TVs too but we also use cm for those
For a second I was almost fooled and was dreading the intro. You got me.
It's funny to see people still seething over it.
@@ZontarDow You should look at Sky F1's website occassionally if you want to know why. I'm pretty sure their constant hammering of the subject is partly why many Brits are still outraged when most of the rest of the world has moved on.
@@rjfaber1991 I think the fact that Brits are actually under the illusion that he's the GOAT and was robbed also has a lot to do with it.
@@rjfaber1991 I'm in the US, and I haven't moved on. It's like the Olympics - when the officiating is clearly bogus you lose all respect for the sport. The FIA can fix the rules, they just don't want to because then they'd have to admit that last year was a farce. I'm sure Verstsppen is too egotistical to care, but I know that in his shoes I'd know that I didn't really EARN the championship. Someday he'll mature a little and realize that his championship is a hollow victory and be ashamed. Or he won't.
@@andrewostrom8676 You are rather missing the point that if Masi had allowed all passed cars to overtake as soon as that was possible, instead of first wasting one lap with the "lapped cars will not be allowed to overtake" message, the race would have restarted on the final lap, and to all likelihood would have come to the same conclusion.
Yes, the procedures that were followed by Masi in only letting some cars past and restarting immediately were a very fringe interpretation of the rules, and I agree that the incident is worth looking into for the good of the sport, but if you're going to reason along what-if lines and draw conclusions about whether championships are earned or not based on that, at least go all the way back to where things first started to go off the rails and reason from there, not just from the point you feel most aggrieved about.
The new tires also have less sidewall deflection so the contact patch will also deform less under cornering which will affect the aero of the tire.
Incorrect. Sidewall moves independently of contact patch. Less load on sidewall means more sliding, therefore more degradation on contact patch.
@@isuckatthisgame What is incorrect? Sidewall deformation affects contact patch the two are not independent unless the tread separates from the sidewall. If that happens you're probably in the wall.
All hopes of being able to see glowing brake under heavy braking a night races (something I think all of us can agree is classified as a cool thing to look at) were stripped the moment the wheel covers were added to the regs.
it'll probably still show through the rim, since the brakes are larger now
I rather have a close racing than 20s lead with cool glowing disc brakes.
It also prevents us from seeing the wheel designs, which on 18"s will be a lot more visible, and seeing the 3D shapes of the wheels is a lot cooler aesthetically than flat wheel covers (look at concave-face wheels vs flat-face wheels of the same design, the concave variants almost always look better)
@@jsquared1013 I believe all of the wheels are homologated this year, and all are manufactured by BBS
@@hamzterix ... at, what, 3 races each year out of 23, no less :D
I love your pauses. Do not change, its different, its you.
Your animation skills have been constantly improving and this video was no exception. Keep up the good work.
Speaking as a mountain biker, having gone from 26 to 27.5 to 29in. wheels there are many affects even at low speeds. Turning, braking, ramp effects and gyroscopic effects can all be felt.
2 inches? Jeez that section of the tire is absolutely ginormous, maybe too big in fact? That section of the tire definitely has a great personality too!
I don’t mind these tyres at all, but I love the fact that F1 wanted to make the new tyres relevant and “cool” with the low profile and they ended up looking like space savers!
Oh no, why did you have to type that. I'm just going to laugh everytime I see them now. Space savers, oh dear me!
If the new wheels have those covers then the air that flows through the rim won't exit out the sides, that means toe out on the wheels will be necessary to get the furniture to work properly.
Such a nicely constructed, packaged and researched video.
When it comes to F1, I always believe that my opinion is not fully formed until I hear from Chain Bear
The wheel covers are actually developed by Red Bull Technologies, not BBS.
This is nothing new, all the cars' electronic systems are developed and supplied by McLaren Applied Technologies
Red bull designed them yes,but BBS are manufacturing them.
Thank you that your videos aren't too short.
It took a full 12 mins listening to your calm and composed voice explaining something highly interesting to bring my blood pressure down to normal after that intro joke!
Love the new intro music!
very eighties, absolutely fantastic
If the tyres are bigger, and therefore greater circumference, that would mean that per lap they will do less rotations over the same distance than the smaller tyre. This means that they should last longer as each contact patch is in contact less times per lap than a smaller tyre.
Yeah but contact area is greater, meaning more damege in lockups and the cars are heavier. But we don't know how the compound works yet.
Woah 🤔
Interessting Theorie and also very smart. Never thought about that, but it should be like you say.
I remember being kinda mad when they first announced 18 inch wheels, cause the early prototypes were basically just standard alloy wheels and kinda looked the same but different, and my luddite F1 brain part didn't like that it looked different. But with the wheel fairings, I have to say you are right, they look damn good
Definitely need LED showing their team manager head rolling around slowly
@@bocahdongo7769 that would be rubish
The old 13 inch wheels certainly had it's unique appeal with the large tires they used that I really like. But I agree, the wheel fairings did wonders on the new wheels compared to how the initial prototypes looked.
To me it just kind of looked like someone simply had pimped a F1 ride.
@@jonsen2k they were just better
It’s wild that the actual international standard of p-metric for tire sizes is a mix of inches and millimeters- inches for profile of wheel and tire but millimeters for width. P-metric stands for “Passenger Metric” so any standard use road car (excluding light trucks and heavier) use this system, so I guess F1 cars count as passenger vehicles. Very fast, very expensive passenger vehicles
Not quite. It's inches for wheel rim but NOT 'profile of tyre'. The profile of the tyre (sidewall height) is a percentage of the width of the tread. 225/40 means that the tread is 225mm wide and the sidewalls are 40% of 225mm high (90mm). It's only the wheel (rim) diameter that's still in inches. So the whole size might be 225/40-R15 (for instance with a 15" rim).
aww jeez it's even more complicated than i thought
9:34 BBS rims but then they cover them 🤷
could have been great advertising with the BBS rims and logo showing
I love the intro music, and nice bamboozle at the beginning
Was waiting for your new video release since ages...thank god you guys are back
Awesome video. Very helpful and informative. Keep up the good work.
inch is used in majority of circular items drum kits, rims wheels. all measured in inch's as the size is closer to a hole unit number in inch's rather than mm you dont buy 335mm tyres unless you are talking about the tread width
One important element that always seems to be overlooked when discussing the new lower-profile tyres is the concept of damping. As CB noted the compliance of the old high-profile tyre made up part of the suspension travel of the car but critically it was undamped. With the low compliance of the new tyre that lack of springiness will have to be compensated by more travel in the suspension, but unlike the old tyre it can be properly damped by the damper systems. So this new tyre will be far easier for the teams to design for and control from an oscillation and ride perspective.
Less big-sidewall deflection also means more consistency in the tires'/tyres' behavior(/behaviour?) while cornering.
FE qualifying could be an interesting video at some point as well (critique on the system, like you did last time)
before this video the whole matter of tyres and wheels was not particularly clear to me, now it is, so thanks, it was very easy to get
In Germany we do still use inches for some stuff. With the rims, we do use Inches. Also with displays, we use inches regularly. I mean it's way more convenient to say you have a 40" TV instead of saying you have a TV with a screen size of 101.6cm.
The screen size is not so important for good numbers. You need to know the total width of the TV, when you want to fit it somewhere. The screen size doesn't help there. Knowing the aspect ratio, you can do the math and get the numbers exuding the frame but the frame is also important.
Great video! Thanks.
your videos are amazing. Thanks
Ty for this video Chainbear, was looking for something similar to this a few days ago.
As always, brilliant stuff!
They should also get better turn in and less under steer because the sidewalk will deform less on corner entry
Thanks for the discount!
1:30 I also find it kinda weird that here in the Netherlands we usually stick to referring to screen diagonals in inches rather than centimetres, however because of that I find it weird if I see it in centimetres.
at 5:12 I just started singing for no reason.
At 7:20 you are right but if you think about it there is less air in the new tyres so in theory it should be easier to bring it up to temperature
278mm to 330mm is a 70% swept area increase in front brake rotors, surprised no one is talking about that much.
Always amazed that they could pull up an F1 car up with brakes shoe horned into those old small 13inch rims.
Long time no see brother
Welcome back 🙏
Really stepping up with the graphics lately, very nice
Great information
Everyone uses inches for rims in Europe. We are used to it now. And it's easier to say 18inch, 16inch than saying 354mm. We also use it for televisions
Oh you little... FCK you got me
Great video as always! Missing word (construction?) at 7:40 is weird though!
The subtle change to 2022 reg sprites at 5:37 makes me happy
That new intro is FIRE
I'm gonna miss AlphaTauri's white wheels.
3:09 j-j-j-judders this was some good humor 😂😂👌
5:01 more pitstops is a good thing so it's a win-win right?
i remember schumacher going for 4 pitstops in france and he was pushing every single lap
he won that race
he means less pitstops, because the tires can last longer while still being pushed
The new tires allegedly can be pushed for longer meaning possibly less pit stops
If they're going to a spec wheel rim as well, does that mean the wheel nut and mounting system will also be standardised? Because if it does go that way, that also opens the door (finally) to having standardised pit equipment between teams. A lot of people don't realise how expensive it is for the smaller teams to develop those things themselves.
That would be absolutely against the spirit, what next? Drivers getting BoP? It’s already a big enough farce that RB got it’s wings clipped last season with the pitstops.
But that’s the sport!
Listened to the intro a few time and I'm not ashamed
We use inches for the same reason we use them for TV sizes. 55 inch is much easier to say/read/display/package than 139 cm!
Absolutely loved it! your videos are the best!
Love the intro
Aren’t tire sizes in Europe the same as here in the US? Width in mm, ratio of width and side wall in %, and wheel diameter in inches. So it makes sense Pirelli uses inches here.
I’m interested to see what kind of tactics teams come up with to combat these changes
Only OG's get this reference: 5:20
Old geezers?
In never thought I would see an F1 car with steelies
love u chain bear
Even in France we have always used inch for wheel sizes.. and then we also use it for computer monitors, but not TVs which are in cm. I don't even know at this point. Actually I do admit that 13' 15' 18' is easier to get an idea of what you need, rather than 25.46cm or 31.89cm when the common populace is involved.
Been watching since the beginning of last season love the videos and I can't wait to see you cover the upcoming season cheers!
Of course F1 uses inches and they will continue to do so because it's the standard measurement for wheels. F1 wants to stay in touch with the car industry and using millimeters to describe rim size would make them loose it, because basically no manufacturer does that.
Heating up the tyre after the pitstop was also a thing in pre-GT DTM
Change is exciting!
The distain at which he said "inch lovers" lol
All I want for Christmas is a chain bear f1 wheel 🔥
That aliens sign from The Arrival used as coffee spil xD
Is it just me or is your voice alot lower pitched than usual? also love the new intro theme
great video
Inches are just a nicer unit of measurement for real world objects, I calculate in metric but I report in inches
Everybody uses inches its just easier. We use metric for everything but rim sizes and plumbing here in Slovenia.
I like this new quality
7:16 - I'm fairly sure stretchtastic isn't a word (ignoring a fitness equipment brand named Stretchtastic and an elastic product named Stretch-tastic).
Finally someone said the most important thing for tyres. They look damn cool
You also don't mention that the new tires should eliminate the horrible oscillations you sometimes see in the slow-motion video of cars going around a corner. Those can't be good for the structure of the tire or the handling of the car.
Besides the ride being rougher and more like a kart, the turn-in should be quicker and more direct, the change of direction won't be absorbed in the sidewalk as much.
You know, this is sounding more and more like an IndyCar that's costs 50X what an IndyCar costs to go 25% faster...
I'm excited for the new season. I'll definitely watch a few races, instead of reading the events after the fact like last year.
Chainbair needs to be the voice of child bedtime stories. Best voice in the biz.
Miss you ❤️
The Tyre/wheel debate always ends up going round and round....
Need a video on aero package comparison of all teams!
I wonder whether there will be any changes in case of lockups
We also talk about HP even though kilo-watts are the metric term
0:55 For once, a UA-camr aligns numerical columns the correct way (to the right) 👍
They need to use LED display on wheel cover and showing their team manager head picture rolling around slowly
It definitely add "futureness" and "showability"
No Michael that's so not right
Good to know more about the tyres. Hope for a good season with these new changes!
As a computational chemist I couldn't help but notice GaussView.
Cool theme song
Amazing!
Between floor development and tire magic window finding this season is going to rule. Seriously the tire change is BIGGEST change in f1 in decades. Suspension changes are huge plus the floors. Hope Red Bull and other trounce merc
looks wise: Does Not correlates with road car wheels. New F1 wheels look less similar then previous years wheels, with the black plastic hub cap.
Noob question, does pirelli (or any previous tyre suppliers) share the results of their tests to the teams? Like the technical analysis on the performance of each compound at different tyre temps and degradation levels?
Bigger circumference wheels will also have an effect on the final drive, so do you change the differential or the gears in the gearbox?
Changing the diff ratio makes the most sense.
Did you fail too mention the cockpit view is larger thanks to the lower front nose.
I think the weird mixture of units in the automotive world is probably an attempt at creating some kind of universal standard for parts that are on every car. It's not true in every aspect, since manufacturers from different parts of the world may use different bolt sizes, engine performance units, etc., but for wheel and tyre sizes it makes sense for everyone to use the same system of measurements. Allows wheel & tyre companies to sell the same range of products globally.
Inch lover here thank you
Perfect way to start the video hahaha
may i ask why the intro music is a bit lower in pitch for this video?
7:45 , Think you forgot to say construction. Unless you really do mean “there’s also it’s, which is” haha
A channel that does well to offset the lack of good F1 content on UA-cam.
