The EJ Engine: Subaru's Crown Jewel or Overrated Relic?

  • Figured we would give the EJ a little bit of love and talk about why it is the best mass-produced engine built by Subaru. Subaru has made a good amount of engines throughout the years however from the enthusiast standpoint is any one better than the other? Personally, I think the EJ series takes the cake for the best engine made.
    The availability and affordableness of parts, the modification potential, community support, reliability, and more make it a top contender for the best-produced engine.

    MotoIQ did a really good video comparing the EJ and FA. The gist, that I took away, was that (from and engineering standpoint) the FA is better in every way except its lack of priority oiling, and it's still relatively new, so the aftermarket just hasn't had a lot of development time with it compared to the EJ (roughly one decade compared to roughly 4 decades).

    • @bendtheski
      @bendtheski Місяць тому +1

      The MotoIQ vid was packed with good intel on the FA. Reinforced my WRX Limited choice in '21, although now I've upgraded at least as much as the cost differential for an STI, and arguably would have been pretty sweet to own the last production model. I don't think we knew it would be the last in June of '21. Love my REX though, and now that Cobb has released flex fuel for '15-21...

    The EJ has reached legendary status in my eyes. Like you said, the aftermarket support is absolutely INSANE. AutoX? Got parts for it. Rally? That too. Drag racing? Why not here’s some parts. In the process of waiting to get mine back from the shop and I’m never straying away from the EJ. Gods engine!

    Dawg, I still miss my old 95 Impreza 2.2l L coupe to this day. That thing was such a beast of a car, you couldn't kill that block. It's still around, new owner is somewhere nearby, I see it every now & again. The car really, really, needed to have body work/rust repair done that was way outside my wheelhouse, went to a good home honestly.
    I have a friend somewhere nearby that specialized in high compression N/A EJ blocks, specifically the EJ22s. He's like the foremost expert online on the Subaru forums in terms of that side of the "platform" so to speak. One of his Magnus Opus cars finally just shit the bed the other day, I think it was honestly a chassis issue not an engine issue.

    I think what I like about the EJ so much is that it’s such an accessible engine to learn on and there’s such a large variety of sub variants and once you know the basics you can basically do anything to them. My legacy with a 255/257 had its first motor last for 348000ks stock (killed it when I brought it home whole other story) and the second one now will be cracking 200 so they do last if looked after and not just abused

I bought a new “stage 2” block. The shop thinks it will be about 16 grand total for the whole job(includes e85 tune) do you guys think that’s a normal price? they have been around so long there is almost always a trick, or a set of tools/extensions that work perfectly for the tight spaces and you can figure that out on forums or by asking around fairly easily. doing spark plugs with the right tools is easier on an EJ than a lot of other cars that people generally consider easy to work on.

    I've had EJs and loved them, but a stock FA24 block is a substantial improvement vs an EJ. You can surely pull the block apart and make an amazing example of an EJ like I've seen you and many others do, but stock for stock the EJ surpassed

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  Місяць тому

      We’re looking at overall, not just block for block. You’ll still hit the fueling wall, transmission swap, lack of cams etc for the FA24. Things will become substantially more expensive than if you were to do it with an EJ

    The main problem with EJ FA FB engines is mass production, Subaru has to produce millions of engines as quickly as possible. During the casting process contaminates, oxidation, or dross are introduced into the mold causing irregularities visible on the outside of the casings. This causes internal stress and weaknesses that eventually distort the block, more (HP) stress and heat creates more distortion. The early EJ 20g and 22T blocks were cast in a vacuum chamber mostly eliminating contamination and porosity resulting in a much stronger block however this was not cost effective so Subaru abandon this method.

  • @bullnukeoldman3794
    @bullnukeoldman3794 Місяць тому

    The FA/FB series engines are the result of Subaru moving toward the mass market from the niche market - more EPA friendly to make the numbers. The STI is gone mostly because of this. These engines are cheaper to assemble - just glue 'em together with Three Bond. Rather marks the end of an era. Sad but predictable. I owned a Subaru with the FB series engine - got the short block warranty replacement for oil consumption from those low-tension rings and water-thin 0w20 oil at 18k miles - and traded it at 48k for an F350 (it couldn't tow a 16k lb horse trailer...). Still own 2 EJ cars. Reliable, no chain rattle, no oil consumption issues, just old-school engines that do the job without drama.

  • @uknterror508
    @uknterror508 Місяць тому

    Over time Ive learned a few things about what makes a car reliable, it always boils down to how well the owners treat them (engineering nonsense aside), stock or otherwise. Subaru's get a bad rap because its an unconventional style engine and anyone who only works with inline or "v" style engines, have to rely on those who they know that work on them, which means that can vary greatly. Example, youve only owned GM, you know them like the back of your hand, youre not too unfamiliar with other non GM vehicles when it comes to repairing them, youve got a friend that LOVES subarus but you always see the ones he's owned is almost always on jackstands, hes the type that does hardly any research and kind of fumbles around the engine bay, not really knowing what hes doing, for you thats your only line of knowledge into the subaru platform so by proxy you associate your friends experiences and see a trend of other people who also have problems with theirs that most likely do not know how to actually take care of them or modify them. So you kind of assume they all must be crap.
    Basically anyone with fair amount of knowledge and knows how to do their research will almost never be apart of the statistic. You can talk to youre blue in the face, show everyone like you have been how simple it pretty much is to build and maintain these engines but the damage is done unfortunately
