@@yixnorb5971 apparently the crown vic just happens to share the same wheelbase. There are some videos out there on UA-cam that show the conversion process. Also what ive heard is that some of the original machinery used to stamp the steel panels also survived which is why it's possible to do this.
Fyi: The stunt drivers don’t compress their spines when doing these stunts because they have special harnesses that suspend them over the seat - kinda like an infant bouncy seat - to minimize the chance of back injuries. Just in case you were curious.

It looked better on the show especially with narrator with the southern drawl in the background. Production couldn't afford to trash a Charger every episode or two so at some point, after a bunch of real ones got twisted from jumping, they switched things up and stopped trashing them. Now, with that being said, I can't recall exactly what they did but there's a vid' here on youtube in which someone tracks down (and buys) the first (#001) General Lee. An older gentleman had it, the original, on his (old scrapyard) property not far from where the show was filmed, he had a couple other vehicles from the show as well, and I believe he explains what was done (during filming) in order to stop ruining real Chargers. If i can find the link i'll come back and share it. EDIT ... So I found the link for the video I mentioned (in which the original General Lee was located and purchased), link below, however I just scanned through the vid' and I may be wrong in thinking that this is the video which contains the explanation about how they filmed episodes without destroying real Chargers. It may be in another video I saw at some point. This one is worth watching though 100%. In fact, the exact number is said to be 317 from series creator Gy Waldron. I know him. That's how it went down (no pun intended) during the filming of the Dukes of Hazzard. They sometimes needed replacement so fast, that the orange paint on the next one wasn't even fully dried.

I jumped a C3 Corvette over some railroad tracks one time. Probably got about 1' foot total air and chipped my teeth. I didn't do it on purpose. The plastic cowling under the engine was bent slightly but that was it. It was a customer of my brother's car. My brother swapped out the 305 with a mild 350. I was 16. The customer nor my brother ever found out. I jumped it prior to the swap, so my brother fixed the underside not knowing I did it.

That was the most hilarious, most glorious self-own video I've seen since the guy on the dirt bike launched off a ramp and completely cleared the lake he was aiming to land in and landed flat on his ass 20 feet from the bike on the far shore. It was amazing and I couldn't stop laughing!
When Hal Needham did the bridge jump in Smokey and the Bandit you can see the thick dirt on the landing side to provide some cushion. Cool jump but the landing is just so un-forgiving on the blacktop. Awesome stunt and nerves of steel to pull that one off.
Glad I read some comments before leaving mine. I thought it was a real '69 Charger. There is not many left and they won't be making them anymore. I have a 1977 Ford LTD that I take good care of. Not many of those left either as I have not seen a '70s LTD in decades except on the internet where I also found and bought mine. I bought a Dixie air horn for it too. 😄

Pretty ingenious swapping the drivers seat for an upside down 5 gallon bucket for the driver to sit on, as the bucket creates a soft cushion of air on impact right before collapsing

I watched a documentary years ago and if I recall they stated that the last two seasons they had a very hard time finding chargers, so the cut the tail light panels out of the wrecked ones and put them into 1970 chargers. @@pscurti350 Yes, a landing ramp. Idk if they ever used any (landing ramps) on the show/movies. They usually wrecked the cars during the stunts. They had a fleet of cars as backups.

Update: I just listened to a recent interview with the driver. I had heard that the impact had caused Castrati resulting in a very high-pitched voice, thus lending to the thought of a career as an Opera singer; but he has since recovered and sounded back to his normal self.
If you jump a car until the frame buckles from the force of impact, no harness is going to keep you completely safe. He's feeling that hit, no matter what anyone says. This may be a guy who does this often due to some of the comments saying he's done it over 30 times. That in no way means he won't be a completely broken man later in life if not already. That force is going to go somewhere & a lot of it will be transferred into his vertebrae. It's not avoidable when you're pushing everything to the limit. The car literally fell apart upon impact & the frame snapped. That's a ton of force to be able to do that. I'm thinking the ramp was set up wrong for too high a jump. I blame the ramp builder.
Video was cut off too short. Didnt include the rest of it where the ambulance was taking the driver away on a stretcher and highly sedated for the pain in his spine.

The car literally fell apart upon impact & the frame snapped. That's a ton of force to be able to do that. I'm thinking the ramp was set up wrong for too high a jump. I blame the ramp builder.
As a crown vic guy, this is the only time i approve of this level of abuse.

That jump was done 2 weeks ago here in Moncton New Brunswick Canada, and Tom Wopat wasn't there
