1924's Cinema Projector "Pathé Baby" - Restoration
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2023
- Hi everyone !
This is a rare movie projector produced by the company Continsouza around 1924.
Those projectors were very popular in Europe, mostly in France and England.
I was surprised and really excited to find a Charlie Chaplin film in the pack !
In October 1922, Pathé launched a projector for home use. Designed for easy handling and family use, Pathé-Baby was the first in a range that introduced people "home cinema".
It launched a new format with reduced production costs, 9.5mm, the development of which was
inseparable from that of the projector. A catalogue of films was published, taken from the Pathé
catalogue and those of many other producers. The films could be rented or sold, in a new version reedited especially for that format.
The Pathé-Baby camera was marketed starting in July 1923. Using reversal film, it extended the practice of photography because it allowed individuals to immortalize their loved ones, their holidays, and the major events in their lives, and even to try their hand at fiction. Amateur filmmakers could operate it with a wide range of accessories and have their films developed at the factory.
A sign of success, the use of the Pathé-Baby went beyond the home and into associations and meeting places such as schools, community centers, and amateur clubs. Through a range of cameras, accessories, and popularization tools, a real 9.5mm community was created that went beyond French borders. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the 9.5mm market was dominated by Pathé, which tried to maintain its leadership in an increasingly competitive market, countered by camera and film manufacturers, including Kodak, which launched 16mm in 1923 and 8mm in 1932. Nevertheless, it was so successful that for more than 60 years the popularity of "9.5" exceeded that of the Pathé-Baby. It even became an emblem to be defended against the multiplicity of formats and manufacturers' brands after the Second World War.
Please watch till the end to see this rare movie projector in action !

This was my first cine projector. I never realised what a complicated ting it was. I accummulated a large collection of 50 foot reels. and longed for a model Kid which took 400 foot reels. I could rent these at the local camera shop. My favourite was called "Piggyback Plane" Which showed a small plane on the back of a Sunderland. It also had very good views of my house on the bank of the river Medway in Kent UK
The engineering and machining that went into that projector is incredible!
I agree; that old technology was impressive!
It's the way everything of yesteryear was made. Made to last.
@@steventrosiek2623
Undeniable!
In the past things were made as well as they could be. 😊
Yes, I agree with you🙂
Thanks for restoring this precious old projector 📽️ this is not just a machine this is part of technology revolution.
Great restoration!
From this to have 4K cameras in our pockets. It's impressive (and scary) how much technology has evolved in just 100 years.
A 4K projector is still a wee bit bigger than this though. Then again, a camera in those days was a bit bigger too, I imagine.
Nearly 100,
To be fair, this isn't a pro quality projector, it's only a step up from a kids toy, albeit a beautiful made one.
Magnificent preservation of an important historical artifact! This job has to be one of the top 5% best restoration videos yet.
Thank you so much 🙌
Wow, a 100 year old projector! And well-preserved films included! It was very satisfying to watch them after the restoration! Great job!
Thank you very much !!! I couldn’t save all the films… most of ‘em were in really bad shape, unfortunately. Glad you enjoyed, it was a huge job 😓😅
Just remember how it all goes back together is a feat unto itself.
This was probably one of your coolest restorations.
Now you just need to restore an organ and an old theater
Haha 😂 Ok for the organ 😅👍 The theater will wait tho 😉
@@TheFabrik0:52 That's a clever way to rewind an old film
I am blind i read "orange"🤦♂️
I have one of these in beautiful original condition and with the original optional motor, which was sold as an accessory. Truly wonderful quality engineering.
I almost soiled myself out of fear when I watched you disassemble that thing. I would never get it back hahahaha. Excellent job dude, I am impressed.
That would be so cool to own with those movies with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Encore un magnifique travail ! 👏👏😊Un patrimoine du cinéma « sauver de l’oubli » très bien😉👍
I love how old stuff was always made with so much care and thought, so it's lovely to see how much care and thought you put into restoring these! Thank you for amazing content :D
Thank you 🙌
Какой чудесный раритет! Браво за реставрацию!
Согласен! Какие прекрасные и "умные" вещи делали для детей!!!
@@valshu7644вряд ли это детская игрушка. В те года это была статусная вещь, как видеомагнитофон в 80-е.
EXCUSE ME?!
This is absolutely mind-blowing! Not only the fascination of such an analog, mechanical invention that was perfected 100 years ago - but the CRAZY amount of work that went into restoring this.
I am just shaking my head in disbelief... Freaking amazing...
Thank you very much, so many parts, huge work indeed 😓😅
How in the world do you remember where all those little tiny pieces go? It's amazing! 😮
Absolutely incredible restoration. You did an amazing job restoring this old projector. It came out beautiful. I love it. ~Kevin
Hey Kevin thank you very much !!
Забавный агрегат! Спасибо!
Very cool and nice restoration 👍 It's like a home entertainment system for wealthy people back in the 1920s.
Exactly 👍 Thanks a lot for watching and also commenting 🙌
This was worth every minute watching you restore this piece of film history back to working order! I cannot believe how it looks like brand new. Just excellent hard work and a lot of it. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you ! So many parts 😓 I was surprised to see it running so well at the end 😌👍 Unfortunately the rolls are in very bad shape, almost all of them 🤷♂️😔
Agreed! I could watch hours of content like this. I’m still just a kid from the early 1960s.. my father taught me filmmaking when I was only 6 or 7. I went on to become a television station engineer and am always fascinated by how intricate and ingenious these old devices are. Fantastic job!
Everytime I watch one of these videos, my only thought is "I would mess up so fast putting this thing back together." Very satisfying to watch everything be put back.
Fantastic restoration, i love watching your videos.
Thank you !
Wonderful restoration of a beautiful projector. I am amazed at how you manage to re-assemble everything when there are so many parts!
Wonderful work!
I cringed when you put the bulb in with bare fingers & didn't wipe it off
Sorry about that… My mistake
Even the device is small but it is more complicated than new projectors!!!!!!!!!!!!
… You're an artist. Congratulations.
Thank you 😌👍
Lots of thanks and appreciation for such lovely, rare, old times experience👌👍
Next video: restoring the Titanic
That idea is so stupid and dumb and unrealistic. And I wanna see it happen
We need that titanic

now you're talking my language, cine film. I love 9.5mm Such a clever design. Thanks for saving this piece of history, remarkable work you do
Thank you !!! Most of the rolls were in very bad shape unfortunately… I could save only 2/3 😔
@@TheFabrik Sign of the times, I have had cine film come to me with really bad vinegar syndrome. I managed to rescue some, not all.

Interesting and Satisfying to Experience 👍 wow 🏆
Thank you very much 🙌
Your love of film is obvious, I never expected to see such a well done video about any projector this old
Очень интересная реставрация и видео. Классный аппарат однако. Спасибо и лайк.
Thank you !🙏
Tout simplement superbe bravo🤓
You do the most wonderful refurbishing. Amazing job fantastic video
What a nice project and a historic one!
AMAZING..,, Extremely well done!

Wooow incredible work and impecable job, it's great restoration in 100 years old piece.
Its amazing. Tamanduá is from south América. The possibility to Watch those movies again is incredible. Thanks. Congratulations.
Thank you very much 🙌 I was wondering if those Tamanduas were still existing 🤨 Or if they disappeared like many other species 😔

Wouhaou, quelle pièce... et toujours superbement restaurée, félicitations!
Un grand merci !
Superb Superb Superb 👍👍👍
Wow la classe! J'ai vu que le Baby Pathé avait d'ailleurs fété ses 100 ans recemment !
Oui exact 🙌
when you have talent and love for this things... It´s awesome! Greetings from Perú
Muchas gracias 😌🙏
Superb job! As an American, it's the first time I've seen a 9.5mm projector in working order! Love the attention given to the gate and the pressure pad--and the fact you had a working lamp at all. And the shutter timing was spot on. Worked with 8mm to 35mm, so I understand how precise the mechanism needs to be.
Thank you !! It’s my first restoration of such a projector… I have a couple of other brands. I will make some video soon ! 👍
Réparer une machine aussi complexe. Quelle patience, bravo.
Merci ! 🙌
Beautiful restore.
Hi, another amazing restoration, its very interesting watching how you take these old machines apart and rebuild them to perfection. Cheers, Paul.🎥🪛🔧👍👍👍
Thank you very much Paul, it was a very challenging project.
Brilliant restoration. That projector was made at a time when things were meant to last.
Magnifique restauration ! Très belles prises de vue. Un vrai régal ! Merci ! 😃

You are a great restorer and I thought you specialized in restoring trains but I have learned that you have great skills beyond that and that is what makes you a great restorer.keep up the great work you do and I will keep watching you.
Thank you very much 🙏
In my childhood I was too fond of projecto but my journey was up to still film projecter of 35mm.
But the spirit in me is still thirsty for such things. Best work of Restoration .👌👍🙏👏
Thank you very much !!
Bravo sir! What a wonderful restoration! ❤
Very rare that you can reuse an original belt from something this old, same for the original tapes. Wonderful project, reminds me that I have a film projector of my own that needs some work.
What a beautiful little machine, so intricate and well engineered. I love that you could see the file marks from the factory on some of the castings. I can't believe that you had the courage to take it apart. Your restoration is beautiful to watch and I can only guess at the amount of work involved. Wonderful. 😊
Thank you very much, so many parts… huge work 😅 I was surprised to see working so well actually 😌 Unfortunately the rolls were in bad shape 😔

Magnificent restoration. Such great attention to detail. The nickel plating adds a sparkle that makes the device look new again!
Thank you very much 😌👍
Just AWSOME.
Thank yiu very much for restoring and saving another piece of history. Worth every minute of my time.
In the 90s I worked at a production house that had one of these projectors. For a time, we were the only place that had one that was functional enough to transfer the 9.5mm film to (then) video tape. Getting the hang of hand cranking and keeping a consistent, correct time was pretty tough. We got referrals from the Smithsonian at one time. It was pretty interesting film to watch, that was for sure.
Wow, incredible, congratulations on the restoration, it was beautiful and perfect. Everything New, thank you for the Pathé Baby Projector cinema!😀🥰💜💜💜
Thank you !!🙏

Perfectly done.
9:30 - beautiful shot.
Wow. That was truly amazing.
Last time you answered "I am always waiting for your comment" - this time you had to wait too long, sorry! But your answer also did put a bit of pressure on me to really pay attention and watch out for all the little details you always include and I admire so much!
But already these still- but not totally still-shots at the beginning are just AAAAH 🥰! The little change of the lightning, the little twist on the focus, damn your good! And 2:24 to 2:34, just these few seconds, they have everything in it: The craftsmanship, the filming, the editing combined in perfection 👍. And again the beauty and the intelligence of the piece itself, showing the skills of the people who built it in first place. great choice.
I have mentioned it before and I say it again: Not a simple YT-video, a piece of art. You HAVE TO send it in to be shown on a short film festival, what would be better than a cinema projector!
And already the next one waiting, what a treat! Thx again for your efforts, I really enjoy them and the follower-numbers show that I am not alone.
Thank you so much for all these nice words 👍 I really appreciate that and I’m so glad you enjoyed it 🙏 It’s always a pleasure to share my work with you. I think I will keep this projector 😅 Thanks again !
What a splendid job you did restoring the "Pathe Baby" movie projector. So skillfully done. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. I bet it took a lot of skill to get the inner parts in time with the film frames. Excellent work.
Thank you ! I was surprised to see it working so well. Unfortunately most of the rolls were in bad shape so I could use only a couple 🤷♂️
truly amazing restoration! Merci!
Merci à vous ! 🙌
