Can we take a minute to acknowledge Remedy for supplying DF with the PS5's equivalent PC settings. This sort of transparency and community interaction should be industry standard. Well done Remedy 👏
Yeah man. DF are big boys in the game now. I doubt they would do that for anyone.
.
yeah the only drawback to that is we see that it's basically running at Low/Medium settings on a PC.
Remedy are a great dev and their work shines
It is not at all optimized for the nextgen when we see these settings! Just look at what a PS5 is worth compared to PC components.
PS5 => Ryzen 7 3700X + RTX 2080 SUPER and 16GDDR6 ! Settings equivalent to PC settings should be much higher !
These settings are only representative for this game and only this game.

Still can't believe how they managed to squeeze ray-tracing onto the consoles with this game. That's crazy. Also can't believe you get this game completely free with PS Plus. Now I can finally play it.
Refreshing to read this comment! Countless others believe it’s ray tracing + 60fps or bust but here’s a guy who knows how to be appreciative and realistic!!
@@spenny2cents while I agree with your sentiment that this is a huge accomplishment as is, Spider-Man makes me think some clever workarounds could give us both. RT and 60fps goes such a long way in this type of game.
I also can’t believe this game was free. Just getting to it and one of the coolest games I’ve played … ever?
Yeah, but at 30 fps :( My PC will do the same resolution with Ray Tracing at nearly 90 FPS. Unforutnately, FPS + Resolution > RTX
@@BlueisNotaWarmColour Control is using a much heavier engine than Spider-Man, all of the physics and destructible objects in Control are computationally very expensive on the CPU side.
The destruction effects are so satisfying
I wonder how the makers of Second Sight feel about this game.
Or Microsoft with Crackdown 3 and THE POWER OF THE CLOUD!!
Lol, unrealistic as hell though. Have you ever seen a chair break a desk like that and not just one but multiple desks. Sorry but that's just weird to witness, physics working on particles, but objects are made of different materials so they don't break the same way and require more pressure to cause breakage. Sure it looks impressive until you realize unless you're shooting a .50 HMG at the room, a hand gun isn't causing this much visual damage effects.
@@evilformerlys4704 ok boomer, if it’s that unrealistic to you how bout you go make your own game and then I’ll agree
Especially how the desk falls to pieces but the typewriter pad is invincible /s
That's what we call piss poor attention to detail.
This is a game that would really benefit from a Spiderman-style Performance RT mode, at 1080p/60fps, with partial ray tracing
Pretty sure Spiderman performance RT mode is dynamic 1440p , with all RT features , just at a lower resolution
yeah you're right
Saw one of the devs say on twitter that their team is too small to make this work sadly
They'll probably ask you to buy the game again to unlock that.

The settings used in the PS5 version compared to the performance is a clear example why a technology like DLSS is really needed in every game both on consoles and PC.
It can't be done on consoles, since they are powered by AMD technology.
DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) is an proprietary image upscaling technology developed by Nvidia and exclusive to Nvidia graphics cards for real-time use in select video games, DLSS uses the power of NVIDIA’s supercomputers to train and improve its AI model.
The neural network is trained by Nvidia using "ideal" images of video games of ultra-high resolution on supercomputers and low resolution images of the same games.
The result is stored on the video card driver (Game Ready Drivers). It is said that Nvidia uses DGX-1 servers to perform the training of the network.
Especially in this game as it's a crazy hardware hog. Hopefully AMD can pull something decent off to also work on consoles.
dlss is an incentive for video game makers to do a shit job on optimization.
Hopefully amd create their own equivalent and not at the cost to overall optimization.
People arent laughing about "fake 4k" now are they. Native 4k really is a waste of resources
I'm officially addicted to Digital Foundry's videos. I love the higher rate of content we've seen in the past few months.

we need more physics rather than graphics, the 360/ps3 era was sublime when this was exploited
This. I hate how games last generation always felt so static.
Yup. Good lighting, reflections, skin shading, crisp shadows, volumetrics, and all those rendering effects are nice, but destruction and physics really help ground you into the world you're playing. Even if they forget destruction and just make more objects physically active, it feels more immersive. Something as simple as a tree briefly wobbling violently as a result of a nearby grenade explosion is enough to help pull you into the game world and make it feel like you're in an interactive setting and not just standing in a collection of static geometry and textures.

Thanks Alex. I've started analysing Ray Tracing in real life based on your analysis. I've found some very interesting results. The texture quality is amazing as well, they're not even compressed and all cutscenes render in engine as well keeping a nice consistent look between levels

Really cool of them to provide the exact settings. I do kinda wish the checkerboarding raytracing mode would come to PC, though; in general, it would be nice to have more options besides just lowering the resolution or turning up DLSS for reclaiming performance from raytracing on PC hardware, while still getting to see its effects in action.
They need to remaster Quantum Break, that game has some of the best bullet time effects iv ever seen.
Play it on pc. Just needs a resolution bump because graphics were honestly amazing and since it ran at 720p on X1 and 1440p on X1X. Must look amazing at native 4K60!

You can get Control: Ultimate Edition on PS5 tommorow if you have PS+ subscription. Great game to get on PS5.
Yeah along with Destruction AllStars, overall a pretty solid month. I hope Destruction AllStars doesn't suck lol, they did barely any marketing for that game and pulled it from being a £70/$70 launch title to it being free on PS+ 2 months later lol. My only worry now is if they just cram it full of microtransactions to recoup the game sale loss.
I was malding a bit when I found out it was free but it was still funny. Only 17.99 and if the game is as good as people say I'm ok with it
Wait. There's a PS5? Where that at

They did a very good job with handling reflections without ray-tracing, good enough that I would take the 60fps over the 30. But really we're all just waiting for a DLSS alternative for AMD, even if they don't have the same acceleration capabilities
even if the boost is small, it is still a boost.
@@vollkerball1 I guess so, but it also a case of how much fidelity you'll end up losing, for that small boost. If it's like a 10-20% boost but it's a poor 'blurry' quality is like DLSS 1.0 or checkerboarding, then it really isn't worth it. However, a 10-20% boost with around the same good level of quality of DLSS 2.0, then it probably is worth it.
Also, RT performance on the consoles and RDNA2 is really a 2 fold issue:
1) RT on AMD's RDNA2 simply isn't that great. Performance levels when compared to Nvidia's Ampere is around 35-40% less on average and that get's even worse with 'full' RT enabled.
2) There's no additional AI cores on the RDNA2 GPU's to be capable of pulling off something like DLSS, in order to mitigate the loss you are getting from using RT.
@@fafski1199 lets wait and see even if any solution appears and i agree dlss 1.0 was bad but that is normal in New features
@@fafski1199 NVIDIA chose to use tensor cores for the upscaling but that doesn't mean that's the only way you can do it. AMD's implementation can be as good without using those cores but some other way. Not an AMD fanboy, I actually have an RTX 2060, but I just wanted to emphasize that there are multiple ways to achieve a result..
@@ioannispoulakas8730 All other ways will use up processing power, either from the CPU or GPU. Either way you are taking up processing power, that could simply be used to boost performance anyway. It's counter-active, taking away performance to try and boost up performance. It also takes up far more 'normal' cores to process, than it does using AI cores that are dedicated and built around doing the necessary AI algorithms.
You simply won't get anything close to DLSS on AMD GPU's, until AMD also include some dedicated AI cores for the task, on the GPU. This probably will be the case with the RDNA3 GPU's (2022) and it's rumoured MCM design. Either way you won't see it for a while, especially on console (mid-gen refresh consoles, then maybe)
This game was amazing. Just finished it up a few weeks ago. I look forward replaying it in a couple years with the update.

"Convex dish"
Technically concave, but ARE YOU KIDDING ME that the engine knows what to do with a visual abstraction like that? Raytracing is incredible.
EDIT: a word
The engine doesn't 'know'. It's pure physics and the way light bounces that causes the 'anomaly', but yeah that's the strength of raytracing. Imagine 20 years from now when ray tracing also does diffraction and the oil effects in this video would actually be the result of raytracing as well.
@@viperhd70 I didn't explain myself well. I know what raytracing is. My point was that the engine is able to so directly integrate those physics calculations that we don't even anticipate. But when they pop up in front of us it's like "Wow, that IS how it works in the real world!"
@@HorseheadNebula85 You should check out the "camera obscura" effect on Minecraft RTX. It just manifested itself based purely on the physics of light, no pre programming. Its very cool.
30fps is also incredibly bad so the 60fps performance mode is the smart choice imo.
As long as your surface normals are correct, ray tracing will be physically accurate, you don't have to specify whether a surface is concave or convex.

I hope to get a new monitor this year and the first thing I’m going to do is play through Control again. What an experience that was
Next gen consoles already lagging behind year old PCs does not bode well for them. It used to be that consoles used specific hardware to overcome and out-perform conventional PCs (see: N64, dreamcast), but now it seems that design decisions favor commodity hardware and need to be made years in advance, placing them at such an inherit disadvantage.
Because of this, we are already needing to sacrifice 50% framerate for basic RT features on these consoles.
The game just isn’t optimized well for AMD cards. For something complex like control, this game needs the Geometry Engine usage on PS5 and AI Upscaling/Super Resolution on XSX (when the feature is ready)
This game is optimized for several high performance cards (mainly Nvidia’s, but next gen consoles aren’t being completely utilized yet by far)
This game is not at all an indicator of next gen console potential looks like.
Nobody wants to develop for another Cell though. That's shooting _everyone_ in the foot. Multiplatform games make more money, and PS3 games especially would need significant investment. Many of those games are locked possibly forever in that generation of hardware instead of being able to be sold digitally for years and years and years.
Looks pretty good for the hardware they are working with. My only complaint would be that due to the AA being so low, there are a lot of artifacts and flickering due to it.

Which Graphic runs in Graphic mode and Performance mode ?
Normally I choose 60fps for just about every game, but this game actually looks pretty good with its graphics mode.
Looks so amazing. Hyped to play this for the first time via PS Plus on the PS5. Had to stop the video so I wouldn't get any spoilers!
Thanks for doing all that extra work even though you didn't need to!
It’s really impressive considering it still is a ps4 game with some tweaks and enhancements running on new hardware. I’d really like to see a ps5 game built from the ground up that really pushes it to the max.
I think Demons Souls is a pretty great hardware demo considering how true it is to the original.
Just played it for the first time today on my ps5 today. Uploading some gameplay. It’s up their on ghost of Tsushima level graphics wise. 60fps looks really clean and the modern esthetic gives it a really clean look. Lots of aa and the checkerboard pops out at times. But interesting game, still have no idea what’s going on after 30min
@@conciise136 waiting for a sale on that one as I’m not to fond of the gameplay from the PS3 version I own but I’d be willing to give it another chance on the ps5
@@GameslordXY hopefully not that long lol but you could be right 🤷🏻♂️

Well actually, it's more like 5 years or so.
But you will certainly see games that push it HARD in the meantime.
Same as with any other generation.
I felt that Miles Morales with its high performance with RT mode was perfect.
Had this game since last October and just been waiting for the next gen update
Can’t wait for the other video to come live.
Xbox drops more frames
AMD needs to step up their game already and get ai upscaling to work on consoles, the compromises currently are huge.
I feel the same way. PS5 and Series X are really missing that next gen feel. Most games run at 1440p on my PS4 Pro, and the absence here of RT shadows and bounce lighting just leaves the visuals looking incomplete.
I believe that RDNA2 just doesn't have the same kind of AI oomph in the hardware as the RTX cards, so I'm worried that AMD's DLSS competitor is gonna dissapoint. At the very least tho, I wish devs would make use of the reconstruction techniques that are already possible. Temporal Injection in Spider-Man is awesome. If you didn't tell me that God of War was checkerboard 4K, I probably couldn't tell. With existing tech today you can improve image quality a lot with minimal performance cost.
Xbox will support support it with direct ML.
But it's still being worked on
@@nighttimestalker but as the guy above said these new consoles lack the AI oomph compared to the rtx cards, the series x for example has about 50% machine learning performance of an rtx2060.
@@ajamesa1982
Direct ML is based off direct x 12 ultimate.
Something Xbox uses.
Definitely the right call to sacrifice some visual settings for a stable frame rate. The game still looks great.
6:30 "I would be remiss if I didn't talk about ray racing"
Nice one, Alex!
Amazing review & breakdown vid! I just wish for the last part that you had an AMD w/ Gen4 NVME SSD PC to test; as the latest drives can hit literally double the read speed at 7000MB and PC doesnt even have Direct Storage yet. I would love to see a comparison like this, before and after DS comes out
I wonder how AMD is going with their version of DLSS. That could really help consoles reach the higher framerates.
LOL don't hold your breath
And when the RDNA3 or 4 refresh comes mid gen.
When is Sony going to debut their own DLSS solution for PS5? I remember Cerny talking about it.
They already do, Consoles use checkerboard upscaling.
@Sam Houser That's Why Actually PS4pro Never Used Native Resolution Over 1080p In Whole generations Relied on Checkerboard ,Upscaling and Dynamic resolution on majority of the games
I usually choose performance mode, but dang this time it's kind of a hard decision on the PS5. Ray tracing looks amazing on this game.
It "looks" amazing, but I think for this game it's more important how it "feels", and I will stick with the 60 fps mode for that. It still looks great, you just lose the reflections, but it's not like you are paying attention to them during combat anyway.
@@Aristowi doesn’t matter. The game is crap like Xbox exclusives
@@write2nick I think it's one of the best games of the last generation. I'm very happy for it to be getting the next gen upgrade. Would have been dope to see a 1080p 60fps in RT on! :)
I hope those frame rate drops I saw don't occur very much. I am very glad the developers offered a performance mode but it really should mean that it DOES NOT drop below 60 - the idea is drop the visuals BEFORE the frame rate drops
yeah im king of disappointed that the game is not fully utilizing the PS5 hardware, ray tracing aside, the performance mode should run at a higher settings and maintain 60fps every where, it seems to me its not well optimized, we should wait for future patches and see
Looks so good at 60fps. Hurry up tomorrow! I want to play it now!
Nice analysis!
I think I'll be playing this in the 60fps mode on my series x rather than the raytraced mode. Raytracing obviously makes the game look visually more appealing but imo its about time we get off 30fps and move to 60. Its more nextgen to me than Raytracing
Yeah nothing should be in 30fps anymore 🤦♂️
Yeah I actually couldn’t believe how much better Spiderman Miles Morales looked with 60fps, and Ray tracing for me became secondary.
@@lukebradley8952 The RT performance mode is easily the way to go in Spiderman. Hard to believe that anyone would choose 4k/30, even after I kept going back to it, nothing beats the motion clarity that 60fps provides.
We need 1080p/60fps/RT
60fps is the bare minimum at this point, 30fps should be illegal
Remedy sent exact PC settings for comparison?? I absolutely love them for that.
I can't believe we're getting this tomorrow for free on PS5, so excited. Definitely playing on quality mode. I'm off work for a bit too it's like the stars are aligning.
I think people were expecting a 1080p/60fps/RTXON mode. Seems like the best balance.
This game looks incredible. Can’t wait to get my hands on it and play it on the performance mode. The game seems pretty demanding but it would’ve been awesome to see some type of Performance RT mode. Would be amazing to see that in a future update like Spiderman did.
What performance rt, everything is already set to low on this weak, outdated hardware
@@user-ye7lp9lg1c Says the guy with a mx250 laptop. Yes.
@@user-ye7lp9lg1c Hella strong hardware for $500. I play almost exclusively on PC and am happy to tip my hat to the new consoles. Also, Spiderman: Miles Morales has a perf rt mode.
@@ishanawate1849 i have no laptop
Maybe if they target 1080p and/or with aggressive resolution scaling. Idk the specifics of rt in the RDNA architecture powering the PS5's graphics. For example, if lowering
resolution would make room in the render budget for higher rt settings. Instead of only using low/med rt at 1440p fixed there could be a possible medium (with maybe a few high)
rt settings aiming for 1080p with some dynamic res scaling or checkerboarding involved. Basically, a better rt presentation at cost of resolution. ...Or, as you pointed out with SMMM
there could be a pairing back of rt and resolution for 60fps. The only thing is that the rt settings are already low. Maybe halving the resolution of rt reflections (similar to SMMM)?🤷♂️
I've been waiting for this, and I'll enjoy it like you have no idea.
Never played but I need something new
@@vincebliddack2037 yah same here. With most next gen or big triple A titles being delayed right now I feel like any game that is remotely big coming out right now will get played by a lot of people. I mean the Medium on Series X is an indie game really and it was treated like a triple A title. Jedi Fallen Order is back at full price on the PS Store and many played that with it’s update recently. It’s def a good time for any dev company to release a next gen update for a last gen game or to come out with a new title. It will get a ton of press and play. Control is a 2 year old game and people are treating it like it’s a next gen release title. I’ve been looking forward to the game for months now and will def play it tomorrow. I had never even heard of it before the update was announced.
I did look at a spoon, thanks for your hard work.
I'm reminded that the first 3D game I played that used a proper physics engine was Max Payne 2, another Remedy game. Good to see them pushing the envelope again.
Remedy is a crazy talented studio

My thoughts exactly. Miles Morales hit the sweet spot with that option and it's quickly become my favorite way to play, when available.
I really wish more devs would implement 40 fps 120hz quality modes.
There are just so many people with standard 4k 60Hz TVs.
People who by $500 and $400 ps5s do not go out and buy a 120Hz ,VRR TV for $800 over it .
@@Crashed131963 I think you are wrong. I bought a 120hz OLED because I wanted to take full advantage of the power of my PS5. If i didn't have a PS5, i probably wouldn't have bothered
So how close were you to finding out the equivalent pc settings before you got Remedy's message? Did you get them all right?
I'd be really interested in a breakdown of what the series X version will be able to do. Ray tracing is massively benefitted by having more compute units. We know this from pc GPUs. It'll be interesting to see how much further the series X can go if remedy has really optimised for the newest Xbox GDK.
Gut feeling... Xbox will get a ps5 port and not use the extra CUs but rather run on the same amount as ps5 on lower clock at that. Resulting a slightly worse version on Xbox. We will see
Series x has 17% more compute units. Not much of a difference to talk about there.
@@christiansoneson5631 Colteastwood said the same thing on twitter and he got roasted by ubisoft devs. Simply out thats not how coding works at least for consoles.
Also sony just like Microsoft finalized their dev kits and tools for their system in 2020 march. Theres only a 4 month difference between when the two companies finalized their dev kits and tools. So don’t hold out hope that the finalized GDK will give a really big edge over the PS5.
