I feel like when it comes to spawning in the Mediterranean desert you're put in a situation where you're like "Yep this is a Desert Folklore Workethic game, I do not have a choice in this matter" at least you get to pick little skorpi boi as your religion, I'd like to think it's the only thing keeping your people from going completely insane in the desert.
Preserves as a first district can actually be really good for tundra cities, as they mainly just lack food which a grove can provide plenty of, and there's often quite good appeal in areas of tundra as the only feature that can spwan on tundra is woods. It helps a lot if you have the gold to buy the grove, though, or better still if you can purchase the district itself in with faith/gold using Moksha/Reyna, 'cause as you've no doubt realised, hard building a preserve and grove is slow going as a first piece of infastructure, especially when your city lacks the growth to work many tiles or the tiles worked lack production.

Lady of the Reeds and Marshes with Etemenanki is one of my favourite Civ things. Respect to you for not save scumming until you got it! Desert Folklore/Work Ethic is a very good 2nd prize. One thing, when you were disappointed in the production yield in the cap, I don't think Desert Folklore applies to desert mountains, that's why it was a bit low. Annoying they included that restriction, it's a bit like LotR&M not working on all floodplains, it is probably a balance issue but it feels wrong.
As egypt, Lady of Marshes plus Etemenanki is basically a free win. Combined with Egypt's ability that removes damage from floods but keeps the fertility yields... you can get insane tiles.
Always funny when you go from having insane production in the last game to having nothing this one yet still end up doing well. Such a versatile play style. Dare I say Ursatile?
In these kind of Scenarios i rush for a Desert Folklore + Work Ethic combo, Gurdwara and pray Nazca is in the game to boost Preserves and keep the food growth.
Seeing Nazca in Mediterranean games while having a desert empire is like finding the Holy Grail. ***Trumpet Sounds and Fanfare**: introducing ACTUAL YIELDS to your empire!*
Ah man, you really needed lady of reeds and marshes on this one. Desert folklore is cool and all but all that floodplain and oasis tiles would’ve been a big help. Looking forward to this one. I love watching bad start comebacks.

That holy site for Buffalo, you tunnel-vision-ed on the +7 coz of the pin, but there were a couple of good +8 that wouldn't take up spot for the preserve tiles...
Yeah, this looks like a serious uphill slog. So sad to miss out on Lady of the Reeds and Marshes. Good you got work ethic and Desert Folklore. But it's just getting that holy site built in cities with next to zero yields that's tough.
Worst part about losing Lady of the Reeds and Marshes to the AI on this one is they probably had little to none of the requirements. That would have made the game a lot less stressful
If two cities are totally separated by water - so one is an island - the city minimum settle distance is only 3 tiles, not 4 - useful for defending islands chains and water ways!
Ah, no production and horrible grief from barbarians while trying to go for an early religion, my favourite. (No. No, it really isn't). That and not getting lady of the reeds and marshes when you have that much desert floodplains in your starting area is always tragic.
I know it was tough going, but man if you had just gotten that barb camp you would've had a Golden Age since you had just met another player, you had 22/25 to go, and the barb camp gives 3.
Should have gone for Religious Colonization. With an adjacency pantheon and the work ethic, you want to plop down a city. then build a good holy site and laugh. especially if you can get magnus and monumentality to go as well.
I wouldn't play religious colonization myself but if my plan was to go desert pantheon/work ethic I would likely want the ability to plop down the holy sites with (probably) Moksha (maybe Reyna) since desert cities usually have a hard time getting their production going on their own
Ryan, can you help me understand how to increase one’s alliance levels? Mine always expire and have to be renewed without upgrading, and I don’t know why!
If you hold your mouse over the alliance in the diplo menu it will tell you! Sending a trade route, receiving a trade route, Wisselbanken, all that stuff helps = )

I think picking Desert Folklore and Work Ethic is better for wider games because when you get out of Egypt into Africa, well. All you get is desert, definitely see the appeal for tall Egyptian Nile Desert Floodplain games though!

The Skorpi boi was the only thing between insanity and peace, it's true. Thank goodness we were stung with it's butt of delights

Yeah building a preserve from first district was a mistake, I learnt that the hard way!
With all that desert, you'd better build the Univeristy of Sankore. I've been learning alot about it from the comments lately.
Please Ursa, do not cave to peer pressure. We all know University of Sankore is trash. Build that wonderful Petra that is yours by birthright!

it was painful to watch Ursa get work ethic to fix his zero production and then rushing preserves delaying it for 50+ turns
