I finally got a 4 hunting horn squad together and it was glorious. I had devised a plan revolving on use of a horn that serves next to no purpose if no one else is playing with a horn.
TL;DR 4 horns with different buffs when selected appropriately can be fun and effective especially if Empress Roar "Blaze" is in the squad. Detailed reasons below.
Enter the Empress roar "blaze". It has a song of note that increases the duration (am assuming resets the duration) of ALL songs currently affecting the group. Which means for just I tiny bit of down time for the "blaze" user means A LOT of up time for the rest of the team.
So we each brought different horns with different effects (Deep Vero, Teostra's Ophee, Empress roar "blaze" and Desolation's Overture). The results were hilarious to the point the entire group was cracking up.
The first victim was a Nergigante and let's just say it spent more time staggered/K.O'd/exploded than it did fighting. We also managed to break of many of its black spikes (thanks to Teostra's Ophee status aliment attack up + the two dragon element horns) delaying the dive bomb.
Next was Kushala Daora which the Desolation's overture horn user swapped out to use Empress Roar "Styx" (negate ALL wind pressure). It was a bit more obnoxious as this thing likes to fly a lot but the number of blast procs was comical in itself.
Lastly came Teostra before my squad had to go. Again the Empress roar "Styx" swapped out horns this time sporting Dragon flute "water" (to increase fire resistance +10 and null blast blight). End result Teostra managed to kill one of us do to animation lock that horns have by using that massive explosion that it can create at range. Big ouch as we needed to replay all of the songs again to reapply the buffs to the fallen member. That aside dispelling his fire and blast aura and the resulting K.O's did make him fun to fight.

Not sure if you read the comments here anymore, but I recently picked up Hunting Horn in Iceborne because of your video. All the videos I'd found about the Hunting Horn seemed to be from people who had maybe played it for a bit, not fully understood it, and just gotten a video out because it's one of the weapons, and they needed to make a tutorial for all of them. This video taught me that there's so much more to HH than I thought, and now I'm enjoying learning a new, highly technical weapon. I have a long way to go, but it's very rewarding.
I'm hoping you'll come back and do at least one new class for Iceborne, but hey, I think with this video I have enough to learn on my own from Iceborne speedruns, or other players making HH videos. Thanks a ton for the extremely helpful video, and for making me into a HH player!

@@Griffted Hey I know it's been a while since you posted this, but I picked up Monster Hunter World during the latest Steam Summer Sale. It's the first Monster Hunter game I've ever really played and I picked up the Hunting Horn because I thought tooting monsters to death would be funny. A few weeks and a hundred hours of gameplay later I wanted to figure things out and found this video. For the first time I actually feel like I know what I'm doing, at least a little bit. I'm not just doing whatever recital or attack I feel like and actually thinking about how I'm playing the game. I'd love a post-iceborne update to this because I'm excited to know how speedrunners wound up making use of Echo Waves and the new songs like Impact Echo Wave. Regardless, thanks for all the help and teaching me how to better play that sweet chin music.

If you are a serious Hunting Horn user you MUST watch this video and you can see the pure love put into this video for this niche weapon in MH Series.
I just wanted to add this, about the wake up re-positioning of Super pound using roll from the monster's head, some parts of their bodies can affect the range of waking up hit when the monster is sleeping like their front legs, horns, wings etc. that's why you can get mixed results from doing that.
And this, doing forward-recital (like Griffted said in his video the best way to do the forward-recital is after you do the forward slam or super pound) rapidly tap forward and the waking animation will get cancelled and your character will still move forward, if you have 3 queue songs you can actually travel long from where you started doing the recital lol this is only a situational application it's not that good and also it's not that bad and also it looks fun at least to me :)
    Great video as always!

Coming back to this video to give my thanks, Griffted. Hunting Horn was always a weapon I dabbled with from a young age when I first came into this franchise with FU on the PSP, but I never truly knew the weapon until I watched this video. It's by and far my favorite weapon to use now (we don't talk about Rise), and this video was an invaluable resource for being able to play it at a higher level, and gaining more enjoyment from doing so.
To this day, I consider Hunting Horn to be arguably the most difficult/complicated weapon to use to its full potential, but it also is unmatched in the satisfaction you get from playing it. Again, thank you very much for releasing this Masterclass video, and I would love to see you do it again come Wilds' release if you find the time.

Thank you for the video. I'm a mostly self-taught hunting horn player (before starting out I needed to look which buttons do what attacks, lmao) and MHW is my first game. A lot of these I'd figured out on my own but there is still some moves I don't utilize much, like the back slam (I call it the fade bonk) and the neutral version of the flourish attack (still haven't found a use for this one...)
Where your videos nevertheless shone for me was in the application department. It's one thing to know what moves exist and how to do them, it's quite another thing to know how and where to use them, and what effect they specifically have. A lot of Japanese games are trial and error in the last department especially. For example, it was only yesterday I found out that hunting horn songs actually have different lengths for almost every song! I just naturally assumed that it'd be one length for stacking songs (eg. Attack Up) and one length for extendable songs (e.g. Earplugs) but no it's a whole bunch and you're not told that at any point in the game! That's the sort of thing I personally need a lot more of.
Actually, wait. That was you. On Jinjinx and Tuna's channel. OH WELL. Thank you again in that case!

MHW is my first MH game that I've ever played. My friends are usually the ones that always play metas on online games. But I love playing the low tiers. They remind me of personal stuff, so I always try to prove to others how, even low tiers, are capable of doing better when you know how to play their strenghts.
So, I asked my friends which weapon was the worst, and they told me "Hunting Horn". And that's when I knew I wanted to play that.
I finished all the campaign with only Hunting Horn, and it really grew on me the love for the weapon.
That's why playing HH agressively/efficiently is such a good rush.
    Really appreciated the video :)

I've been playing this weapon for fun, never thought there is this deep mechanism behind it. This weapon strikes me as an enigma especially the recital and encore where directions and your last move and attacks get involved in deciding which recital will you get. I really like using hunting horn in Worlds because the last time I used this was in MHP3rd where it still sucks. Thank you for the Masterclass, and I will be sure to tell my newly-fond-of-monster-hunter friends to use hunting horn. Let this guides be known to all. Praise you

Hunting Horn was the last weapon of the 14 that I picked up. It's quickly becoming a faviourite in World and Iceborne for me. This video is such a useful tool to learn the general concept of the weapon and the depths you can take your HH gameplay. Even with the changes in Iceborne, this video stays relevant. Also, this is one of the best edited videos I've seen lately on UA-cam. The style just fits perfectly to the purpose of the video. Amazing!

I'll finish this later tonight, but this specific video shows why MH is one of the best franchises ever created.
The tomes worth of esoteric knowledge... you just showed me two things I never knew, and I actually play Horn pretty regularly.
I've been playing the series for eleven years. Some of these concepts actually work BACKWARDS, too. I couldn't use HH effectively at all 10 years ago, but thanks to understanding of its purpose and knowledge of the move set's skeleton, I can effectively go back in time and use the Horn pretty well in the Freedom series.
    Thanks so much for this.

Been a Dual Blade main since MHFU. But everything change when my curiosity came, I thought being a HH main would be just a support player.... So I researched and researched until I removed all the misconceptions and tried it myself.
You are one of the reason I’m a HH main in MHW:Iceborne now.(It’s so much funnnn) Wouldn’t have shifted without you guys(Gaijin Hunter, Grifted,Arekkz, Monster Hunter World PH)

In all honesty, I've sought after to effectively learn the melee weapon of the game- barely skipping the hunting horn as I saw my style of play for it fit enough to go on hunts with it whenever I need to. Now I've realized so many mistakes I've been doing and SOOO MUCH room for improvement. This video has really made me respect the dedication and fortitude it takes to master the weapon, and and just pushes me to really work on improving. Props for the lessons, sensei.

As someone who's been using Hunting Horn exclusively for _World,_ this just cleared me up on a few mechanics I'd not fully grasped. Like, I knew about the quick recital and the self improvement variation, but I'd made the mistake of thinking self-improvement had to be the last song queued up and not that it had to be the first one played. It's something that seems obvious in hindsight, but selecting the song for the recital wasn't something I'd considered as a factor (and is a feature I should use more in general).
There's also the Deviljho Slap which isn't specifically about Hunting Horn but a key component of the fight that I'd not realized how it worked before. I'd gotten the knock down in the past but assumed it was a lucky stagger out of his counter and was unaware that any damage would have the same effect.

I wish other content creators made guides that were as educational as yours. This was an incredible level of detail and I can't imagine how many hours it must have taken you to put everything together.
I started with CB a few weeks ago, and only recently learned you can cancel the Charged Double Slash recovery into an Axe Morph for the Guard Point. That would have saved me so much HP, but I haven't found any guides that mention that yet. But your guide sounds like it covers every base you could possibly look for.
I'm fiddling with the HBG now and plan on picking up the HH shortly.
