Chiu Chi Ling deserves the utmost respect for his impressive teachings of Hung Ga Fist and for his appearances in Kung Fu movies, especially Kung Fu hustle. He used to be one of the 2 or 3 Hung Ga masters that taught my dad....so this guy is awesome :D
I recognized him too from the Kung Fu hustle movie. The tailor using the Iron Fist technique. I also recognize him from the 1979 Jackie Chan movie : The snake in the Eagle's shadow.
@@Kevlar-lz5cuHe's the tailor in the movie. Using Hung Gar Kuen. He wore the Iron Rings across his forearms while striking Versatile Tiger Claws poses which are trademarks of Hung Gar Kuen. It trains the Bridge Hand while in deep Horse Stance. Also known as Earthbending in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The narrative is one of the best. It describes the purpose and the principles of the style. It is the true body of work that passes down the knowledge of a master. Eventhogh there have been debates on which style is better, this video provides an excellent narrative on why this style is functionally effective. While doing so, it implys no disrespect to any other style. This is a keeping and should be archived.
well its a muscle memory excercise, if you practice in full tension your body remembers it and responds in automatically in muscle memory, in combat your body reacts as if in the world is in slow motion, because we have done this a 1000 times.... your body takes over... its amazing, ive been in three fights and have used it and didnt even realize that the fight was over.....
wow, Buck Sam he train my father back in the early 70's My dad to this day stills practice Hung Gar. Hung Gar made his body like steel and very powerful. He told me he been studying Hung Gar for more that 40 years, everyday, DAMN! He also said that it is his religion. One will never get ill practicing Hung Gar.
I've been studying over a year and i have 2 sections of the form left to learn. the movements so far are very natural to me. the stances and footwork are usefull on the job. I haven't had a bad back from lifting something heavy for a long time now thanks to this form.
As a Goju ryu practitioner I like a lot Hung Gar and Pentjak Silat. This execution together with the narration explain some hidden principles in Okinawan karate thatcame from China, such as hardness and softness (Go and Ju), read the Bubishi and the Kenpo Hakku for more about it.
This is why I started to learn the Martial Arts. Everything about this is right from the wrist bands to the pants to the shoes and especially the Kung FU. THANK YOU FOR THIS THANK YOU......
Such an excellent demonstration of this form! I noticed some differences from the version that is taught by Bucksam Kong, although this version contained all the same components, just in a different sequence
This is a wonderfulvideo showing the whole set of Hung Gar tiger crane style. Chiu Chi Ling is a real master of Hung Gar. His father is the student of Lam Sai Wing and of course, everybody know that Lam Sai Wing is the student of famous Wong Fei Hung. Thanks for sharing this video.
Those sounds arent "sound effects", hes simply moving so fast. And this "face" is effect of Chi Kung tehniques which are part of Hung Gar style. This IS martial art.
mytastycakes69 That's when you start ripping through reality. Only true martial artists can cause this sound to come out when executing their moves lol.
Poetry in motion, I adore traditional martial arts and I refuse to believe they are not practical it's just the most people don't spend the time to truly understand the application of the moves from the form. it is not easy and takes years of dedicated practice. Think of forms as a poem albeit one without a linear interpretation.
Sorry for Necro. Not even a case of people not understanding just a lack of application. Students need to be able to drill 1-on-1 the actual sequences in the form just to naturally ingrain the muscle memory. Have them time the opening of Tiger crane to a partner punching at their face and stomach. Congratulations they can do a basic block and are on your way to apply grappling/chin'na technique. Have students avoid kicks by shuffling their feet through cross stances then continuing into the front kick as demonstrated 2:07 . Congratulations they have rudimentary understanding of dodging/spacing/positioning and can throw a well loaded kick. Beyond that it's important to not only spar in order to naturalize techniques but also to fight outside of the school. Without those steps a form pretty much only conditions the body. All else equal, the person with experience fighting others will more likely win over someone who simply swings at the air or even a bag. Your technique can be beautiful, perfectly executed, but if you get nerves from being unsure in the moment or never developed your will to fight or any other myriad of reasons then you basically were just exercising for fun.
It’s just not fully applied sometimes IMO. I have a MT background and had a chance to spar with friends with JKD and Wing Chun disciplines. All had movements and applications during the sparring that caught me off guard with effectiveness in its own right. I have since started to implement those very moves for MT training and sparring effectively. Traditional Martial Arts has its benefits, but I agree it’s just not applied enough whether through sparring to upkeep it’s practically.
I like GM Chiu Chi Ling's version of Tiger Crane the most. His version has more power and has a strong emphasis on every move. For me, emphasis is very important. Plus gathering all those power and try finishing the entire form can prove to be wearisome, so this is not as easy as it looks.
He is! Along with being a Hung Gar master, he's also a well-known martial arts actor. He was also in Snake in the Eagles Shadow with Jackie Chan, and Bruce Lee: True Story with Bruce Li.
Very Nice: good explanation of "forms." As well, the balance and essence of the arts and demonstrated strongly. Many of my cousins train in the Hung form, and I can vouch to its pure function and ability to bring out the very best in any practitioner--fantastic stuff!!
Hung Gar is both internal and external. You have to see the later sets. All traditional Chinese martial arts include both if trained correctly. Example: Chen Tai Chi's second form called Cannon Fist, which is external=) (I train Hung Gar, Wing Chun, Mantis, and Chen Tai Chi Chuan)
@TheHoboKillers The iron rings are used as a training and conditioning device. They both add weight and condition the backs of the hands and forearms when they hit the bones with the impact of a strike.
A friend of mine was fairly accomplished fighter and cross trained in various martial arts , he said that the pivoting foot work in Kung Fu was very efficent for knife fighting. So even if it looks traditonal and a bit ecentric there is wisdom in the old ways.
@mouse8390 this is used in goju ryu to multiply striking power. striking a pressure point with keen acuracy and vicious force is the reason it is called "encyclopedia of destruction". thats hung gar.
@WOWman1797 Hung gar, like Wing Chun and most Shaolin Martial arts were closed off to the general public until maybe a few decades ago, so it's not as easily found...
The song is over 50 yrs old.. may be more, as it was in the original black and white Wong Fei Hung series. It has been covered since then.. the modern version is by 'Gary' Lam (or Lam Chee Cheung).
I think the name of the song originally was 'By order of the General' but now it's pretty much associated with Wong Fei Hung after the HK movie industry made so many movies about Master Wong with that song playing
@GottaBeSaid thats something people tend to forget. You have to draw the gun, make sure its ready to fire, aim then shoot. If someone is attacking you, you not gonna have time to draw a gun or a knife, cause their not gonna let you have the time. Even if you do draw your weapon and have ot ready, you could drop it, or wound yourself in the struggle
you can still order it from sifu's website, ive spoken to him, i think he lives in alhambra california, he put me on his mailing list and i bought a few cd's...
@mouse8390 if you watch the individual techniques of the form and work out aplications in your head youl see why they call it "tiger crane". white crane kung fu is used to strike pressure points, tiger style used to attack viciously and end a fight in a signal burst. pause at 0:55, 1:39, 3:35 and 0:49. those are hand positions used to strike pressure points. particularly 1:39 is central to tiger style and the rest coming from white crane.
Yes he is. Wong Fei Hung passed the lineage to Lam Sai Wing (The butcher of canton). LSW then teached Chiu Kau - the father and teacher of Chiu Chi Ling. He will pass the lineage to Martin Sewer
Its from the cartoon "Avatar: The Last Airbender". basically, there were four nations and each had "Benders", ones who could control the four elements. The Earth nation used Hung Gar as a basis for their Earth Bending, because of its strongly planted stances and pure strength. Its actually a REALLY good show, despite being a kids cartoon.
An interesting viewpoint. It's arguable just how important unarmed combat was in military training and warfare. Ming general Qi Jiguang wrote in the Ji Xiao Xin Shu (New Book Recording Effective Techniques), "Unarmed combat would not seem to be preparation for war, but the study of unarmed combat makes your body used to action, so in fact it is the basis of all further training." 拳法似無預於大戰之技,然活動手足,慣勤肢體,此為初學入藝之門也。 Further training being more practical (for the battlefield) weapon training.
Very good video. This guy has excellent form and execution! I've seen him in a number of martial arts movies where he played well. One of the movies was with Jackie Chan in Snake in the Eagle's Shadow. Hung Gar is powerful no doubt, but requires lots of stamina and training. I have great admiration and respect for the art but cannot practice it because I do not have the strength or the stamina - for those who do, I envy you.
Hung gar is an external style which will eventually give way to internal style like WingChun & Taiji. all chinese movies depict taijimasters defeating iron palms. Brucelee is a Wingchun warrior.
im currently a blue belt second stripe in shaolin kung fu and all we are learning is the same as this....but less hu ha intense...is hung gar and kung fu basically the same thing?
Wow...it's rare to see that amount of real power in a form. I really would like to see the Chin Na grabs applied in MMA. "oh my god! that little chinese guy just ripped out silva's tendon like a lawn mower cord"
@cantfind the original song is called "emperor's mandate" i believe george lam sings over it in "wong fei hung" or "huang fei hung" i dont remember its romanization
Internal generally means soft power, or power from the core, whereas external means hard power or power coming from the muscles of the limbs, combining them gives you what Sigung Chiu calls 'whipping power'...internal and external also often refer to Taoist and Buddhist arts, respectively, Buddhism coming from outside of China
@Anandfulness the belts are not a limitation though because they do not stop at black, you get black, then keep on moving on, and when you finally become the legit master which takes a long ass time, they give you a white belt, because you are always a white belt inside, im telling you its not a limitation its just a nice detail, you could go without belts but then no one would know if to address you as master or newbe

I didn't know he was an ACTUAL martial artist. so cool.
dude! i just saw the first 5 seconds and came to the same conclusion! He was the dry cleaner
@@Spongebathe830 most of the actors including the landlady and landlord are actual martial artists

Dat earthbending though
My local kung fu school we do this style, we also have Chen Tai Chi which is dat waterbending. Will be the next Avatar before you know it..
