The Expanse | 5x2 Churn - REACTION!

- Things get even more intriguing during this episode, and as we expected, we get to dive into Amos' backstory in Baltimore. Loved all of it, but we are so invested in these characters by this point, it was tough to watch at times.
Remember this is not a substitute for watching the actual show. If you haven't seen it, please do so (available on Amazon Prime) and then come back to the video afterwards.

"There was a button. I pushed it"
I know the feeling "You guys post a reaction. I click it."😊😊👍👍
Who knew James Holden was descended from Douglas Fargo?
@@TheDetailsMatter At least it wasn't the wrong button.
Fred's reply was priceless "You really do go through life like this"
I know I'm kinda off topic but do anyone know a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
When Wes Chatham researched the character so as to better portray Amos, he talked to some child psychiatrists.
He learned that children who have been horribly abused frequently become abusers, themselves.
If they don't, they often cauterize their own emotions just to save themselves from the torment.
However, as a survival trait, abused children become hyper-aware of the emotional state of the people around them.
They recognize, faster than just about anyone, when people around them grow stressed and learn to identify what causes that emotional distress.
We've seen that with Amos, throughout the series.
Also, I think you can tell Frankie Adams got herself a good trainer.
Bobbie Draper is leaner and harder than she was, when first introduced.
That's super interesting, thanks for sharing. I think the research Wes Chatham did really shows in his performance as I think it's the strongest one in the show.
He also read The Body Keeps the Score. Great book.
"We hope episode 3 won't end in cliffhanger."
Assuming you've already watched it, I'm just gonna laugh HAHA
Yeah, big joke!
The headgrabs will be back
@@KatSonny It sort of already had!
The Baltimore introductory shot: they had an helicopter flying close to a massive crane, passing the camera to it, then moving the camera down the crane into the hand of an operator that then followed Amos into a crowd of extras. They really cranked up the cinematography of this season to a 1000. And next episode (as someone else said, directed by Thomas Jane) has a lot of incredible shots as well. They are easy to miss on first watch when you are caught up in the story but, jeez, they really did an awesome job so far this season.
Note of clarification: Helicopter had a nose-rigged camera, and the 200-foot crane had a descender-rigged camera. Two separate cameras. Action and positioning were synced but, as I recall, VFX stitched the shots together.
Still an impressive feat for a show!
In an interview, Wes Chatham said that Toronto "doubled" for Baltimore. Since the studios are in Toronto, that city has also doubled for New York in past shots around the UN Headquarters.
@@AngeloBarovierSD Yes! I should have worded it better probably, still great shot indeed :)
That first shot after the credits is so unbelievably good, it blows my mind. It was shot with a helicopter passing the shot to a crane, which then lowered the camera down to street level all the way to a close up on Amos. These guys have really upped their one-shot game.
I identify so strongly with Amos and his struggle to comprehend both his own emotions and the feelings of everyone around him. The show has had to abridge his journey, but I think they really did it justice, and it's so great how everyone that doesn't have all this foreknowledge of him still loves him.
No spoiler, but Thomas Jane directs the next episode. It's his first for the series.
I didn’t know that that’s really interesting I enjoyed the 3rd episode alot
I think he did a fantastic job
And besides Naomi's part, its a fantastic episode.
@@maxmccrabb2477 same here.
KorbinX I agree... but I feel that it will pick up.
Just on my way to bed when I got this notification....Oh well sleeping is overrated.
Great reaction.
Kat’s “shut the F up” to her tummy cracked me up 😂
I know it wants its fame too, but just shut up while we talk, all right tummy? 😠
@@KatSonny Just a food baby wanting to chat. Your own internal Grogu. :)
That story with Timmy and Charles really go to Kat. You have the compassion of a true mother feeling the pain of her child
It is nice how they got the same actor who played the Baltimore Police Commissioner in “The Wire” to play Charles in this Baltimore focused episode.
The last scene, those guys that decided not to try to rob Amos. Wisest decision they ever made, my mind went right to the aftermath and a pile of corpses on a blood strewn dock when that started. Whew!
Although Amos honestly didn't want to get arrested.
I just thought of that scene from the animated Batman series where a random goon cracks open a door to a darkened room, sees Batman in there quietly staring back at him, ponders his options for a few moments, closes the door again and walks past another goon who asks him if anything was wrong -- he glances back at the door, says "nope" and peaces the f*** out.
Everyone think they gangsta till they take a good luck at Amos' face. The smart ones realize they are out of their league.
Drummer's motivation is kind of spelled out when she quits last season. She's sick of being a pawn in other peoples political game. She's decided to step out from under other people's shadow and take a more direct and leadership role in her life and the world around her.
I love that we are getting more Amos story, getting to know him more. He is one of my favourite characters in the show.
Drummer is keeping a lid on things in the Belter way, now. She tried to do things like the Inners and it didn't take.
It's great having Bull in the show now. He was a good character they left out of season 3 to bring Drummer way forward.
So Drummer was Bull and a bit Sam/Pa, and is now on an arc borrowing most from Pa, while Bull replaces Drummer and has with Sakai his relationship with Sam, but meanwhile Drummer is the one sleeping with Michio
@@thontor Yeah they rejiggered it for the best i think. I don't wish to spoil it for anyone reading the books at this point, but he's a good honorable character, and his book journey is completely different.
@@Mach1Greeble Yeah, he's a good guy in the book but they're presenting him like an a$$hole on the show. I wonder if that will continue.
Yeah, although his positioning in this season is weird as fuck considering his place in the books. But somehow, I believe, they're gonna give him the same storytelling process.
@@ramiabdo5953 and Klaes Ashford's personality was entirely different in the show from the books so I guess they plan on Bull being awful instead of how he was in the books, where he was a liked character.
One of the best episodes of the show so far. I agree with you Sonny, it's great to see more of Earth in this future, and crazy to think that 200 years from now things won't be that different.
Charles's actor is best known from The Wire, also set in Baltimore, where Chad Coleman (Fred) has also appeared. And Sauveterre is Ward's brother from Agents of SHIELD. Or Peter from White Collar.
I'm in a public place watching this reaction.. and if it's not Amos making me tear up it's seeing Kat and/or Sonny get emotional... oh well idgaf if people judge me. Amos' scenes in this episode were all superb
Fuck yes!
I would think Ashford send the msg to his ship, since you would need a long range transmitter to send msg across space. Don't think you would have that on person.
The actor who plays Lydia's man Charles was police commissioner Burrell in Baltimore in the show "The Wire"!
PS
I just realised "The Wire" also had a plot involving women inside a shipping container... Hmm.
I think the person he wants to see is "Melba", Julie's sister from third season was it... She's in prison on Earth.
I agree.
Oh, I forgot about Melba. I first thought of Anna Volovodov.
Yes i think she (the access who played melba) said in an interview that she had scenes with wes
No no no - you gotta say "Peaches". unfortunately you spoiled it for non book readers 8 (
@@robertperrotto870 I suppose so, but if someone is a non book reader like myself and didn't know any of that they really have no business watching a season 5 reaction video to start.
The people that you hear speaking Lang Belta have a lot more experience (as they have been doing it longer) and this has let them inject their own personality into their lines.
I love that they got an actor with a disability to play Erich, he was fuckin great in his scenes. Also really enjoy the Polyam Belter Fam that Camina has going on
I can’t help but wonder why he doesn’t have cybernetics. As I recall, book 3 mentions that there aren’t many disabled people in the expanse because of how easy it is to regrow/replace limbs. The one blind guy was an edge case.
I would understand if Erich was poor and couldn’t afford anything fancy, but he’s clearly loaded.
I don’t remember most of “The Churn“. Was this explained?
@@rensin2 it's because he's undocumented and some circumstances that happened in The Churn, he can't risk it
@@rensin2 Only the rich can afford implants or to regrow limbs. Undocumented and people on Basic just have to deal with what they have.
@@nokta7373 Erich is clearly very wealthy. He may be undocumented but he now is essentially a mob boss in Baltimore. I'd think someone with that kind of money would be able to get a procedure like that done "off the books." Seems like he'd have the means and connections to pay people off to keep it quiet. I haven't read "The Churn," though, so I'm sure there's more to it that I'm unaware of. Either way, I agree with the OP that the actor did a great job.
@@rensin2 pretty sure it's a power move, to show how untouchable he is. Also, read the novellas
He (Amos) was talking about Melba/Clarissa at the end of the episode there.
She's in prison on Earth serving a life-sentence, I believe, and Amos had promised her he'd keep in touch, though I suspect this visit that he wants Chrisjen to help sort out for him will be more than just a chance to say "hello".
And no, I haven't read the books.
Just putting 2 and 2 together.
The actress who played her "confirmed" that. She said, that she had some scenes with wes
@@kevinjustin7646 Lol "some scenes"
So good, and so good to see you guys back again.
Drummers crew didn't take everything, but they did allow the other pirates take everything in exchange for a 10% cut, so kinda the same, I guess. I love their polyamorous family/crew they have there. You know, Belters live on ships, so crew and family often become one and the same (kinda like the Roci). Honestly, having read the book this is based on, I'm not sure you guys are ready for what's to come. I. Can't. Wait.
*polyamorous. Polyandrous mean multiple men for one woman. Polyamorous means multiple loving relationships in general.
@@dapeach06 I know. Typing on my phone and didn't screen for autocorrect before posting. I didn't even know polyandrous was a word until I looked at what my phone changed just now!
I can already tell I'm going to love this season.
Now that you’ve seen this episode you can read The Churn novella to get some backstory on Erich, Timothy, Lydia, and Amos Burton
cannot wait to see your reaction to episode 3.
Now *that's* the end-of-episode wailing we all know and love (with pen dropping instead of head grabbing, but I'll take it)
To me, Amos is going to see either Anna Valavadov or Clarissa Mao.
I think it's Clarissa since he probably wouldn't need "Crissy" to arrange a meeting with Anna
I'm thinking Mao, since we saw her in the trailer.
i know who he is going to see and what is going to happen and what he does as i read the books but i won't spoil it :P
@@Cydonius1 thanks 😛
I haven't read the book, it's just a guess because we see the Mao sister in the trailer 😂
@@Cydonius1 "Peaches" does not spoil it for anyone, while also being specific enough for the book readers to know what you are talking about.
The people still on earth that we know about. Rev Anna (he liked her), Mao's Daughter (Peaches) and I guess Murtery (Smuffie) cause he was blue after Amos waxed him. He did not really know Holden's Family but maybe them and Chrissy's family to pound some sense in to Arjun for Chrissy.
Remember in the first episode, when Monica met Holden met in the bar / diner, and there were two guys weirdly watching them? Now you know why they were doing that.
Also, Erich's swanky residence: in the books, it's an incomplete Arcology (a single building capable of housing a small city all by itself). Erich and his gang took it over when the project was abandoned due to rising sea levels around the building site.
i love holden so hard, and i'm always so surprised when people seem to just despise him in their reactions. i just don't get it; he always tries to do the right thing, even when he knows it's going to cost him something, and that 'something' will hurt. it's so good to see you two again, as well. kat, you are so beautiful: with your blonde hair and blue eyes, you have what, in america, we call a 'nordic beauty' -- it seems icy and cool, aloof -- and yet you are so tender, welling up with tears when charles spoke of his love for lydia ... characters you barely knew, and yet their plight touched you. thank you, and sonny, too, for putting it out there to share with us. that's brave. xox
Toronto is always Toronto ahah. It's been used for so many cities at this point. Both NYC and Baltimore in this case. Baltimore has a very distinct shape and sadly this was not it. But they did a good job with what was available to them. (oor you can say that water levels rising changed the shape of the city)
I love Amos trying to work his way through grief. Wes Chatham plays the stages so beautifully, he shows us not tells. I so love your reviews and reactions, they are so genuine and fun.
Though as a show tie in could you imagine Amos and Grogu.
Grogu joins the Rocinante.
Frankie Faison....vet actor playing Charles...I first seen him in the 1988 classic comedy movie Coming to America
@8:16 the girl you guys liked was also a character in star trek discovery season 1 or 2
"There's a button. I pushed it"
Me: Sounds like something Fargo(Eureka) would do.
I love watching your guys’s reaction to everything. You guys are such a cute couple. Keep up the great videos👍
Ask yourself, who, other than the crew, Amos might want to talk to who is on Earth?
I mean if the person he wants to talk to is on earth that person is dead now, I don’t know I didn’t read the books so that may have been covered already
@@jcheck1107, you don't have to have read the books if you paid attention while watching Season Four.
@@LeeCarlson as I read your comment I realized who he’s seeing thank you for the clarification
Frankie Faison used to be on The Wire, which was set in Baltimore.
He was also on the series "Banshee".
@@dwnkaomwn3953 'Homelander's' best friend, Sugar.
I was expecting Baltimore to be more "cyberpunk-ish" in the 23rd century
It just looks like Toronto
@@knowyourhistory Indeed, i wonder why :D
It looks like Baltimore now where you can beat somebody on the street with a handgun and no one gives a crap
Your comment reminds me of when I moved from Europe to America in the 1990s and was shocked how umm, not quite as advanced it was in many ways. My girlfriend had the same reaction when she visited a couple years ago.
@@imonymous lol you won't find futuristic cities in America lol. everything is run down here. for best futurism experience, visit Shanghai, Seoul, or Tokyo! They are as close to cyberpunk cities as you can get today.
The lad Amos meets is coincidently from The Wire, nice link to Baltimore..haha.
in terms of Mars its worth thinking back about everything various martians have said in the past to frame the way various players on Mars are thinking.
Kat's right, White Collar.
Yes it's Tim de Kay. It took me a while to recognize him because he looks older now
NEVER SPLIT UP THE PARTY!
The Belter Engineer is named Sakia.
Sakai is her name
She is great, she played a princess in Star Trek Discovery S2 and one of the Short Trek episodes.
The only thing I didn't understand was what was the point of keeping Monica alive in a shipping container? Maybe the thugs had morals and didn't want to kill her. I mean did they leave food and water for her? What was the plan?
Kat made a good point about keeping her alive to find out what she knows and if she's told anyone.
I am happy to see that the Khlav Kalash vendor from The Simpsons is still in business in future Baltimore ;) "No pizza, only Khlav Kalash."
Greetings from Chile 🙋♂️
did you notice the touch that Amos gave Charles??
The same way that Anna touched Amos.
The same way that Lydia gave Amos.
I think it is the way that Amos shows emotion, because Lydia did not touch him in a sexual way and Amos took that to heart and I think it stuck with him.
Have you read “The Churn”, the novella that covers Amos’s past? It fills in some details re: Lydia & her relationship w Amos.
Jimmi: that's almost poetry 😭
@@paulwassom4231 I've read none of the books yet.... To avoid spoilers :)
So no, I've just watched the show a million times, So I honestly don't know if I'm right or not, and please don't tell me, I want to live in the reality where I'm right until proven otherwise ;)
I saw the memorial to the ship that Naomi had a hand in destroying, but I haven't seen why that ship, in particular, would have been so prominently memorialized. I haven't seen yet that Earth connects that incident to Marco.
At this point, you can safely read The Churn. It's only a 20-30 minute read, but it's a tough read. We know Amos did not live a pretty life.
Amos only knows a couple of people on Earth outside Baltimore, that we know of. Which would require Avasarala's assistance to see?
It appears that Admiral Sauveterre has given a lot of thought to how a relatively small force could control the Ring Station space. I think you may be right about him thinking that it would be worth working with Marco to see Earth crippled. That could leave even Mars' remaining military the most powerful in the Solar System.
The ship that blew on Luna was a rarity. The drives in the expanse tend to be very safe, an explosion claiming somewhere around 300 lives is huge, of course there would be a memorial
Now you guys can read The Churn.
From the angle of their gaze, I am sorta curious where and how the display is set up. Like it's either high on a wall or maybe they have a multiple monitors with a shared screen on top.
We're watching it on our TV?
Any book readers notice a nice little piece of foreshadowing while Babbage was waiting for Alex? No spoilers - I feel like it might be a nod to an end of season cliffhanger.
Yes. It has been talked about on other sites. Lots of subtle things in these 3 episodes.

Hi guys, long time no talk.
Now is it absolutely safe to read the Churn copy I sent you if you have not yet.
I don't know - is it safe?
@@KatSonny :-) it was safe before tbh (the only thing it would have spoiled really was how he escaped Baltimore and Erich but now it definitely wont spoil anything. Also they made some changes in the show so it is different enough to really be considered ancillary as the book background is a little more grim.
@@KatSonny Also, I was wondering if you guys had discussed on stream any of the Cas Anvar stuff or if you had any opinions or is it one of those things where you plan to stick to the show and not reality (which is fine of course as well :-)

We have ... opinions on the whole Cas stuff, but we don't like to make it a huge point in the reactions. You are welcome to write us behind to ask for the opinions on the Cas stuff.
@@KatSonny It’s safe. Kat was almost there with her theory but we most likely won’t get the how and why Amos got his name and his lottery slot in the show. Erich isn’t a big guy and with his disability he would never have been working muscle so it’s safe to assume that his talents are more technical or intellectual.
im so sad the season will go on hold afther season 6 and there will be no alex in there ... but i can understand after what he supposedly did ... bcs this season is so far amazing !
Camina Drummer is NOT a pirate. She's policing the Belt for the OPA.
She is a pirate though 😅
Pirate queen.
She’s definitely a pirate. She and her polyamorous family/crew
Camina has lost her way because of losing Ashford...she is a pirate, but trying to be nice about it.
She seems to be levying "tax" on actual pirates and keeping their violence in check. Not an actual pirate but still profiting from piracy.
She is so beautiful...... She looks just like Gina McKee. 🙂
I was first disappointed by Baltimore. Expecting something futuristic, then seeing normal people walking on normal streets. Then I realized that all other locations are so different in the show because they are built or inhabited under extremely different circumstances. Only Earth in the future has the luxury to remain old and boring.
My only hope with all those solar panels is that by that time there is a way to recycle the panels as solar panels have to be replaced after so long and the panels themselves are toxic to the environment.
