Holmes was underrated. One of the best snapping jabs in boxing. Unbeknownst to many, it was Holmes that made Ali’s jab better. Heavyweights today fighting in the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s, they couldn’t hang!!!

Great footwork too. If Larry Holmes isn’t on your top ten all time heavyweights, you don’t know boxing. Watch Deontae Wilder stumble around the ring with terrible balance and imagine what Holmes would have done to him.
At the beginning of the clip after Holmes pushes Berbick away, Holmes calmly walks to his corner like a boss, totally turning his back on Berbick as if to say "I ain't even worried about what you gonna do." Even his cornermen don't seem concerned about Berbick hitting Holmes from behind. Eddie Futch just looks at Berbick as if to say "Are you lost, son?" Even when Holmes finally turns around to face Berbick he has his mouthpiece sticking out of his mouth like he's not worried about Berbick at all. Great stuff -- Soooo chill.
Probably the only boxer I ever considered a hero as a child. He held that belt for so long and won fights however he could. Even Mike Tyson would have to admit that Holmes fought the next contender. He was focused.
Larry Holmes had so many great fights! At his peak he was tested severely, but always won out. Losing to Spinks is on the record but debatable. Larry was very unpopular with the press at that stage. When his 49th fight was compared to Marciano, he said something to the effect, that Marciano wasn’t fit to carry his jock strap! Larry was a straight talker, not a charmer or a bullxxitter. Holmes is one of the most underrated champions that’s ever been. I would like to see him in his prime take on the “greatest” and see where the chips fall. But then wouldn’t that be the greatest spectacle on earth. I’m afraid nobody would have a chance against Ali.
60's Ali was awesome and though his defence was actually pretty risky (as he relied almost entirely on movement) he had almost everything and would probably beat anyone. Though that 1 weakness would have been most exposed by a fast long jab-which Holmes had 70's Ali relied more on spoiling, heart, a solid chin and clever tactics. Ali was better THEN against fighters who wanted to get in close, where he could tie them up and hit them with short, fast combinations. A boxer who stayed at range like Holmes would probably have got the decision on ring control and punch output
I think Larry taunting Ali as he beat him despite the obvious fact that Ali was clearly deteriorating athletically and mentally is what made people lose respect for him. Then Tyson sealed the deal with his promise and fulfillment of avenging Ali. Without that, I see no other reason someone as undeniably talented as Holmes is not being mentioned anymore than he has been as being among one of the top 10 greatest of all times.
Ali promoting the fight.. he needs money and Holmes was helping him he promote to get more money and yeah so Ali was old at that time too but still boxed

Man was a beast
Larry Holmes..absolute legend..
Yeah no doubt.💪😎
Berbick helping Mills Lane to his feet was one of the most merable moments i can recall watching live as a kid. Pure class.
Haha yeah that was great
Dang! How did I ever miss that jab!!!
I was just a small kid when I was first drawn to the sweet science in the 80s, fell in love immediately.
I remember Holmes being the premiere heavyweight during the early and mid 80s. But, what I don't remember is seeing today what I consider to be the best jab i've seen in the history of the sport! Ah man, how did this ever evade the wonder and amazement of my eyes...
What a fierce, awesome, devastatingly graceful, lethal, poingnant thing of beauty.
You missed it because it was so fast
@@Echo-mz6tz nice touch lol
This Holmes vs Tyson would have been alot closer 50-50 I think.
This Holmes would school Mike Tyson, start to finish
Prime Iron Mike would still walk through this version of Holmes. Tyson had too much power he would've damaged Larry, & cut the ring off, & took his jab away going into his body early. Although This form of Holmes would've fought a better fight Tyson still would've dismantled Larry. Samething with Berbick, Tyson still destroys him too. Young Iron Mike was something out of a laboratory with both speed & explosive power.
@@oldschoolhiphop2275 I disagree, a prime Tyson struggled with Mitch Green who if you look at his boxing record was average at best, Tyson struggled against big opponents (Bone Crusher Smith), Holmes was not only a big guy but his skills were significantly better than that of Mitch Greens.
@@SiLoMixMaster Tyson would have list against this Holmes. Tyson would have been worn down by Holmes jab, body punches and stamina and a 15 round fight
This Holmes would have beaten Tyson. Mike was just very lucky that he was in his absolute prime when he fought a completely well past his best Holmes.
Larry Holmes truly one of the great heavyweights. Strong, skilled, and nimble. Impressive
I always liked and appreciated Larry Holmes..It's just unfortunate that he came up in Ali's shadow.

You can tell ..Larry Holmes was inspired by... The greatest of all time Muhammad Ali... Very underrated champion 🏆
Larry was his sparring partner
And that bouncing around the ring,we know who he wanted to be like.
What a fighter Larry Holmes was. Calculated, precise with a pleasing style.
Larry Holmes was never given the credit he deserved as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time?
Truth and nothing but the truth
Absolutely not true so many better heavyweights
@@teezycain759 that’s why he said one of the greatest
@@stylescasino1006 he ain’t even top 10 and what would it matter to be ranked the 15th best of all time 😂
@@teezycain759 15th not bad either. You saying 15th like it’s only 50 heavyweights ever. It’s been hundreds of boxers. It’s also about likability that gets people extra praise. I mean T.0 wasn’t a first round hall of famer because of his character. But if they went off numbers
Holmes was underrated. One of the best snapping jabs in boxing. Unbeknownst to many, it was Holmes that made Ali’s jab better. Heavyweights today fighting in the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s, they couldn’t hang!!!
Nostalgia is one of the greatest enemies of the truth.
If you look at Larry Holmes his Jab his right hand and movement and that uppercut he had plus his heart he's one of the Greatest Heavyweights of all time know doubt about it!!
Holmes always under-appreciated...best jab I've ever seen from a heavyweight.
Larry Holmes, up there with the very best of them.
Peter Jansen
Loved watching him fight. And as a white Irish man, i loved it when he smacked the shit out of Gerry Cooney in 81. My dad was so pissed, haha.
@Great Lakes He actually fought him better than I thought he would. Stunned Holmes a few times. Think he got tko'd on the 13th.
Holmes and Bowe are not talked about enough in great HW talk.
A great fight.
Big fan of Larry did some charity work w him in Fl and had spent some time w him in Vegas.Peoples Champ all the way!
Nothing but the Utmost Respect for Larry Holmes👑
Larry Holmes had one of the best jabs of all time. He blocked punches well and knew how to avoid getting hit. He knew how to box..One of the top 5 heavyweights of all time.
His ability to Parry and frame off his opponent to brush off punches is truly overlooked.
Great footwork too. If Larry Holmes isn’t on your top ten all time heavyweights, you don’t know boxing. Watch Deontae Wilder stumble around the ring with terrible balance and imagine what Holmes would have done to him.
wilder overrated as a boxer//

Larry Holmes had the best footwork of a heavyweight and the sounding left jab in the business. He's my best heavyweight of all time
Wow I guess you didn't see Ali box. Ali's footwork, hand speed, boxing IQ and technical skills are second to none was unmatched

A Great Heavyweight Champion!!! 😊
Seven years champ almost what straight wins
Larry Holmes had so many great fights! At his peak he was tested severely, but always won out. Losing to Spinks is on the record but debatable. Larry was very unpopular with the press at that stage. When his 49th fight was compared to Marciano, he said something to the effect, that Marciano wasn’t fit to carry his jock strap! Larry was a straight talker, not a charmer or a bullxxitter. His consistent winning through adversity is the mark of all great boxing champions.

Great fight between two great fighters !!! Larry Holmes is one of my favorites !!!
It was a great fight Berbick gave Holmes all he could handle.
right, but he barely hit Holmes real good once in the fight. He put a big pressure but didn't really scored.
Holmes is one of the most underrated champions that’s ever been. I would like to see him in his prime take on the “greatest” and see where the chips fall. But then wouldn’t that be the greatest spectacle on earth. I’m afraid nobody would have a chance against Ali.
I dunno, "because he's ali" didn't work on Norton
He would stand no chance against a Ali in his prime. Ali had way to much speed and great footwork and boxing IQ
@@crunkgrunk5183 Ali was old and an idiot for not trying hard.
A 60s Ali kills Norton
70s ali Norton himself said 60 s ali would have been different
60's Ali was awesome and though his defence was actually pretty risky (as he relied almost entirely on movement) he had almost everything and would probably beat anyone. Though that 1 weakness would have been most exposed by a fast long jab-which Holmes had
70's Ali relied more on spoiling, heart, a solid chin and clever tactics. Ali was better THEN against fighters who wanted to get in close, where he could tie them up and hit them with short, fast combinations. A boxer who stayed at range like Holmes would probably have got the decision on ring control and punch output
Larry was so underrated… truly an all time great great great champ
How many hall of fame did he beat ?
I think Larry taunting Ali as he beat him despite the obvious fact that Ali was clearly deteriorating athletically and mentally is what made people lose respect for him. Then Tyson sealed the deal with his promise and fulfillment of avenging Ali.
Without that, I see no other reason someone as undeniably talented as Holmes is not being mentioned anymore than he has been as being among one of the top 10 greatest of all times.
Holmes taunting Ali? Bullshit, he spared Ali punishment.
Ali promoting the fight.. he needs money and Holmes was helping him he promote to get more money and yeah so Ali was old at that time too but still boxed
Holmes jab was a thing of beauty. One of the best ever.

Larry Holmes' job is a thing of beauty: lashes out. Right-cross in combination straight as an arrow, too. Finally, as this fight and his battles with Norton and Shavers demonstrated, LH could take it as well as dish it out. Granite chin; heart of a lion- he would have climbed in with ANY heavyweight.
