  • No one wants to be on a blood thinner. But while some people only need it for a short period of time, others will need to take a blood thinner for a long time. So how do you know if you can stop your blood thinner? At the end of the day you have to balance risk for clotting off of the blood thinner with risk of bleeding while taking it.
    This video is about taking blood thinners after a blood clot (like a pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis). It is not about taking a blood thinner for atrial fibrillation. That is different.

    My husband is in his mid-20’s and got a clot in his calf due to a knee injury. He has been on Eliquis for 3 months but is supposed to stop soon. At full dorsiflexion he still has slight discomfort where the clot was in his calf. Should he be concerned about going off the Eliquis or is this discomfort something that is normal? He has also started having Premature ventricular contractions since starting the Eliquis, (I know Eliquis is used to treat AFIB but can it cause AFIB?

      I am sorry to hear about his story. I am afraid that I cannot offer specific advice. I will say in general that after an injury we typically treat with anticoagulation for a limited amount of time (e.g., 3 months). But of course we make decisions on a case by case basis.

    Thank you doctor for the video, would you please discuss blood thinner therapy, like one baby aspirin every day for those with stent in the brain due to SAH stroke (hemorrhagic stroke as you know//
    is it for life every single day? Does the patient has to do INR test from time to time to check whether the blood is too thin? what is the target interval then for INR test. thank you

    • @Angiologist
      @Angiologist  3 місяці тому

      Thank you for the question. Aspirin is a different blood thinner than the ones discussed in the video. It is an "anti platelet agent". Usually, after stents and such, people need to take aspirin or a similar medication for a long time. But this decision always needs to be individualized to take into account bleeding risk and procedure characteristics. All the best!

    what if you had a case of a-flutter but only once, some 6 months ago and no clots? Nothing since then. I was taking aged garlic extract, nattokinase, fish oil, l-carnitine,circumin, prior to this. Is it safe to take those while I'm on Eliquis? I've stopped them while I've been on Eliquis. I've seen no signs of any bleeding.. Aged 73 - lean

      I am sorry... I cannot answer questions about specific cases. For instance - I don't know your echocardiogram parameters. If you have concerns, the best would be to consult with a cardiologist.

    I underwent CABG 2 three years ago but still on clopidegrol, aspirin and statin. I am 51 and have a super fitness as I workout regularly and eat healthy diet. My lipid profile is very healthy like LDL around 60 and triglycerides 121. But my doctors ask me to continue. Can you please guide. Thank you

    • @Angiologist
      @Angiologist  18 днів тому

      I am sorry to hear that you needed CABG at such a young age. I am happy you are now healthy. Whether to remain on both aspirin and clopidogrel depends on the specific nature of your disease (and whether there are stents). So I cannot comments specifically. Most people can stop one of these after CABG. As for the statin - that is critical and has been shown to prolong life / reduce recurrent events. So usually we prescribe these when possible. All the best!

    Do too much red cells or too much fat in blood cause thick blood leading to clotting?

    • @Angiologist
      @Angiologist  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you for the question. There are certain clots (mainly in arteries) that happen from “too much blood”. For the most part, much fat does not cause clots directly.

      I am sorry to hear about your events. It is true that many tests that help us understand the reason for clots need to be done off blood thinners. All the best.

    Could the Covid vaccines be a cause of my embolism? I’m currently on Eloquist and want to get off it…. All my test are inclusive as to a reason.

      I am sorry, but we cannot comment about any specific case. In theory, some patients who receive the COVID-19 vaccine develop clots, but that is not common.

      I am a active 72 year old that has had a dVT in the groin. Doctor put me on Elouise for 3 months, what now? We don’t know why I got the clot. Thanks. Steve D.

    • @Angiologist
      @Angiologist  5 місяців тому +1

      Steve, I am sorry about your clot. Deciding about how long to treat someone after a blood clot (DVT) is a complicated decision that needs to account for the exact circumstances and a specific person's bleeding risk. You should discuss these with your doctor. Often, we treat for longer than 3 months if we do not know the cause, but sometimes, especially when we worry about bleeding, we treat for a limited period. All the best.

      I had a P.E. 7 years ago and I'm still on 20mg of rivaroxaban a day. The doctor's said that they didn't know why I had blood clots but said that i have to stay on rivaroxaban for the rest of my life and I'm only 52 now. I have spoken to my doctor but he just says that i have to stay on this medication. When I had my P.E. I was a trucker and i was eating McDonald's 3 days a week and kfc and subways the other days, and at that time I was drinking about 7-8 cans of strong beer everyday and smoking heavy. But now I have completely changed my lifestyle and was looking into natural bloodthiners like garlic turmeric ect ect. But I'm a bit frightened but I really want to come off rivaroxaban because of it's side effects can you give me any advice pls.

      @Angiologist That figures. I bet the shots give a person the clots. Now, that person has to remain dependent of the drug or die. Biggest money making scam if I ever heard one. Big pharma = big fear!
