I have always used olive oil on the butt. It prevents the poop from sticking.
It also helps to give garlic, honey, and apple cider vinegar in the water. "Magic water"

I got 2 guinea chickens with my second set of chicken chicks. They were just way too noise. I ended up giving them to my neighbor who already had some. A couple of days later he committed that “man your girls make a lot of noise.” I corrected him and said, “ no your girls make a lot of noise.”

They kept myself and chooks safe from foxes and snakes. And warned alerted me of anything amiss. Every peep was welcomed. No one came on the property un-escorted. Fearsome mommies. Do you know. One year they laid hundreds of eggs in a chooks nest and kept everyone around. With eggs to incubate. As they laid but didn't sit on them. Hopeless parents. Ha ha!

@@dianegranger6864 if you have more then one hen, they will all lay in the same nest until they think they have enough, then take turns sitting on them. Unfortunately the only eggs that will hatch are the top layer because the lower ones will never get hot enough.

Their noise is well worth it.
They grow on you. They also did s lit if bathing holes. I'm in a wheelchair. So forever filling those in. Still love them. I could never understand how they managed up those pines in -10°c. Rotten parents went ip the trees and keats left under tree exposed and usually never made it. Easy pickings. Still love them.

So glad the family is home to help with the triple increase of animals/fowl on the homestead this year. 2 1/2 weeks is a long time when you are doing all the work outside, inside, child care and meals when you are not doing well yourself due to being pregnant again.
But children make our lives so extra rich. Congratulations!

What I do to prevent pasty butt is to put a thin coating of Vaseline on their bums before putting into the brooder the first time. We started doing that and have had zero issues since then.

That weed is very good for you. I grew up eating it curly doc is also edible plantain is my favorite for salve. It is a powerful anti inflammatory and antibiotic and anti fungal. It also has antihistamine properties. My mother has very thin skin and her dogs are always giving her cuts that used to take weeks to heal. She now puts the salve on them and they heal in less than a week.

Lamb's Quarters AKA Pigweed AKA Chenopodium album is a true spinach, very high nutrients, however, it also has a lot of Oxalic acid, so you want to be careful when consuming it.

As they get bigger use 2 egg yokes with equal parts of chick crumbles. Just one feeding a day where they eat it all at once. I have done this for years now and never had to deal with pasty butt again. Hope it helps!

One thing I was told when a baby chick has pasty butt that you can do... is when you clip the feathers around the vent area...is to apply a little bit of regular petroleum jelly around the butt/vent lol area so the poop does not stick.

We had a copperhead by our front door after making a weekend trip to see my brother this week. My husband stepped right by it without seeing it. It slithered away before we could get a shovel to kill it, so I am very nervous about where it might be. Your chickens sure seemed happy to get at it!
I tried to have guineas once, and they were picked off one by one by predators. I wanted them to just roam free in the yard, but if I try again I will have to find a way to protect them better.

  • @elainefarr3155

I've never raised guineas, but my sister had some and dang, she couldn't keep them on their property! They had 6+ foot fences and the guineas just flew over, into the neighbors yards and all around. they wouldn't roost in the pen either, and everntually the coyotes got them all. Hope you have better luck! My neighbor in Colorado had a large bunch, and it was so fun to see them running all over the fields, eating bugs and ticks and just enjoying life. They would nest either, and roosted in the trees.

You are very lucky to have all of that lush grass and weeds. I've been watching some videos of the homesteads out in the Ozarks. They are suffering with extreme heat and drought. No pasture or grasses for the animals. And nothing growing to cut for hay for the winter. And the gardens shriveling up. I'm glad that you are being able to fortify the land for next year's crops. Dock, Curly Dock, Garlic Mustards, and wild Mustard greens are my favorites to chop up, and add to stews, side dishes and just like dandelion greens They taste great with Bacon dressing. Dock plants you can use like cabbage as in stuffed cabbage rolls, awesome flavor! The broadleaf plantain has way more nutrients than your spinach. I admit it's a bitter green which are wonderful for your health and stomach. It can be strong, so I use a Bacon dressing on them or mushroom and onions in a butter herb sauce.

I love videos like this. One place I lived was all clay right to the surface and after a few years tilling in organic compost I made myself and then later just top dressing and doing no till, I had a good 10" of nice rich black loam full of earthworms that grew the best tasting vegetables. Never added fertilizers, but did put a lot of garbage in the compost pile that amended the soil. Also I'd grow things like dandelions both to loosen the soil and bring up deep nutrients, but also to provide me with one of my favorite bitter greens.

Your channel just popped up on my feed. I have raised plenty of chicks in thirty years. I usually buy from a hatchery, right now I have two hens that are raising their own. Their first water I put in vinegar about a teaspoon to a quart. Enough that there is a slight tinge to the water. I continue this throughout their caged life. Another thing you may try is just a bit of baby oil around the vent. Just a little bit on a cotton swab.

I learned from the first time I got chickens to immediately lube up their vent with bag balm and give them a little cornmeal everyday. I haven't had a lot of problems with Pace to but since I learned that.

Many many years ago Dad would build up the garden soil by planting Vetch (that seed possibly isn't around anymore) it has a lot of nitrogen in the root system. He would till it under a bit before we planted the garden in the spring to rot. It fed our family all year with much to spare.

I don't have anything to teach you except that I had 2 last year that were hatching out, 1 died, 1 lived! I just really kept an eye on "baby" and it just thrived! Out here in Minnesota, it gets really cold and that little girl just came out fighting! And, survived just fine! :) Just keep going...it's worth it! Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)

The broad leaf plantaine grows all over my property. So do wild blueberries lol. It’s old pin oak and jackpine ground. No clay but sand 4 inches down. So after a few years of failed in ground gardening, it’s going to be raised beds from now on.😊

I've added shelled crushed pumpkin seeds to feed not much, and it seems to help with the pasty butt.

Grow Lentils and soybeans in those areas you want to raise the nitrogen levels. At the end of the season plow it back into the ground. My uncle was a farmer and that is what he did to raise the nitrogen.
