Thanks to Greg's reading, bringing ACD's stories so admirably to life, I realize what an able command of English Mr. Doyle possessed. One really needs to hear his stories and not just read them.

I have always been obsessed with Holmes. I smoke a pipe and keep my tobacco in a Persian slipper. Now if I could only find a lady named Mrs Hudson to clean up after me my life would be complete.
Thank you so much for this, Greg! I really enjoy listening to all of these Sherlock Holmes stories that you do! 😊. I’ve been a huge Sherlock Holmes fan ever since my mother introduced me to the Granada tv series starring Jeremy Brett and David Burke/Edward Hardwick as Dr. John Watson when I was about 10 years old. 😊. To this day, in my personal opinion, Jeremy Brett is still the best actor to play Sherlock Holmes although Basil Rathbone and Benedict Cumberbatch did amazing jobs as well! 😊. My mother also bought me The Complete Sherlock Holmes book series for my 11th Birthday. About a year and a half ago I was able to travel to England and while we were in London for four days, my sister and I went to the Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221b Baker St. It was amazing being there! I loved London and I really want to go back someday. I really look forward to your next Sherlock Holmes story reading! Have a great week! 😊

Thanks for uploading! These are always so enjoyable to listen to. You're quite the talented voice actor and it really shows in this one: You're renditions of the voices, your tone, pacing _et cetera_ brought the story to life so professionally (just like all the other uploads). I like how you reflected Mycroft's lethargy in his voice. It's one thing for Doyle to describe it, but wholly another to actually hear it when he speaks. Your depiction achieved the aura of an intelligent man struggling to stay awake and interested perfectly. I never envisioned that and it was a pleasant surprise to hear. My favourite voice though has to be your portrayal of the giggling villain. That's just how I would have pictured him sounding, eerily horrifying as he coldly stammers out his threats amidst involuntary sniggers. That was just a delight to hear. I had to go back and listen to those lines again. He's such a creepy character and it was enjoyable to hear the lines actualized. He's one of Doyle's antagonists that you wouldn't want to run into in a dark alley. Enough tired ramblings from me. All the best!
You have a remarkable talent for representing the manner of speaking of the different characters in these stories, and some of these characters, such as this interpreter, appear to share your talent. When I first read the Holmes stories as a boy 60 years ago, I was always disappointed in the stories without a resolution - this one, the 5 Orange Pips, et al. I liked the way the Jeremy Brett version of this story had a resolution added. (Except Mycroft holding a derringer and calling it a revolver at the end). Anyway, thank you for your excellent performance!
Doyle has favorite expressions he is overfond of using, to the point that they become predictable. Holmes and Watson are forever “rattling away” in a carriage - in almost every story. There are innumerable ways to proceed, yet they always “rattle away.” And he falls back on the word “singular” in maddening fashion. In British usage, the word can mean unusual or unique as well as distinctive or amazing or surprising or remarkable, exceptional, extraordinary, etc. One wishes one could point this out to him and encourage him to be more precise.
You are so excellent Actor, Greg. High above the skills which we understand under "reader". After discovering you I cant stop to listen to your stories every single night, In my opinion your Sherlock is better then Bretts - more dimensional. They in the Granada version of Sherlock Holmes made, in my opinion, an excellent choice in having Charles Gray play Mycroft Holmes and now hearing the books ending I think it was a good artistic choice in how that episode ended. Sadly the american version (Elementary, which I am a huge fan of) of Mycroft Holmes, the missed in my opinion both. Having animosity against each other or rather Sherlock against Mycroft was very wrong. Hearing Mr. Wagland do the voice of Wilson Kemp was good but George Costigan played a very creepy Wilson Kemp.
Another fantastic chapter. Can you please upload adventure number 38 please. I have listened to all no. 1 to 41. This adventure was missing so thanks for uploading it. Just need no. 38 now. Also after adventure number 41, will there be more?
Thank you for reading these stories. You do an excellent job! Regarding the ending of this one: it does not seem consistent with the rest of the Sherlock Holmes stories that Sherlock and Watson did not pursue the girl and free her and also bring the bad guys to justice.
42:50 the man with glasses drew a "life - preserver" ? According to auto correct. Or are the captions correct and it's some ironic joke? Because he drew a pistol right?
Beautifully read, and introducing Mycroft, a singular oddity. Pity the story itself is somewhat meh. Think Arthur was thinking about something else when he wrote this.
Very high focus in characters and atmosphere, which made it pleasant to listen to. But it's a real shame to introduce a mind even greater than Holmes, only to bring in a mystery so simple that Watson could solve most of it, and not even bring the story to a satisfactory conclusion. Hell, Mycroft's advertisement nearly got the interpreter killed, and neither of the Holmes brothers had made precautions against it. Unthinkable! It's baffling to consider that between Sherlock, Mycroft and Gregson, Watson turned out to be the only one who really did anything in this tale to help the client.
@@tomdekler9280 IMHO the explanation is simple: you remember how Sherlock and Mycroft chat about the Diogenes club members, completely immersed in their observation and logical thinking. I think it was precisely because Sherlock and Mycroft worked together that they forgot about precautions. When they´re together, they sort of escape into their own world and become a bit too careless.
I see where the 1955 Tv show (Sherlock Holmes) got the inspiration for the episode "The French Interpreter". It's not exactly the same but it definitely takes inspiration from this story.
Thank you DarthWill3. Greek accent? - a hybrid - Harry Enfield's Stavros, Yanis Varoufakis and Nana Mouskouri, put through the Nutribullet of my mind and served with a garnish of prayer and desperation.
When you read the stories you see how silly Nigel Bruce's portrayal of Watson is. Watson was not so.e bumbling buffoon. He was an author, a man of science(medicine) , and a military officer.
A life preserver in those times was a short cane with a ball of lead at one end and a leather loop at the other (that goes around one´s wrist to prevent it from being snatched from one´s hand).
I love these readings so much. I know the stories but your readings open them up in new ways, which is such a gift. And your reading manages to be both exciting and soothing at the same time. Miraculous! Thank you.

When they´re together, they sort of escape into their own world and become a bit too careless.
One of my favorites.
I see where the 1955 Tv show (Sherlock Holmes) got the inspiration for the episode "The French Interpreter". It's not exactly the same but it definitely takes inspiration from this story.
I was wondering if you were ever going to get over this aversion of yours and try your luck at a Greek accent. Nice job. And welcome back.
Thank you DarthWill3. Greek accent? - a hybrid - Harry Enfield's Stavros, Yanis Varoufakis and Nana Mouskouri, put through the Nutribullet of my mind and served with a garnish of prayer and desperation.

Good story 😊
Glad you liked it
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Who would not my dear Watson 😂.
Thanks
Very kind of you Joan. All the best!
Mycroft! Yay!
He doesn't pop up as often as you might think!
Here we go again 😁😘
When you read the stories you see how silly Nigel Bruce's portrayal of Watson is. Watson was not so.e bumbling buffoon. He was an author, a man of science(medicine) , and a military officer.
Ur voice is damn good
At 42:55 what is a “life preserver”?
I gather it's a very nasty weapon! 😏
A life preserver in those times was a short cane with a ball of lead at one end and a leather loop at the other (that goes around one´s wrist to prevent it from being snatched from one´s hand).
Superb 💕
thanks
