    You might be surprised to learn that trout will go for catfish bait. While catfishing at night, I spotted a large trout cruising the shallows in mid-July as I turned on my flashlight. Moreover, anglers are catching trout using mackerel, anchovies, and shrimp. I wager that in the Sierras, some mackerel could be quite effective.

      Amen brother (Jesus is God) It's fascinating how indiscriminate stocked trout can be when it comes to biting. Their willingness to bite again despite previous experiences with lures, powerbait, or even rocks stuck in their stomachs does seem quite remarkable. It speaks to their voracious feeding behavior and perhaps their lack of discernment in what they consume.

    • @SeaSpankerOutdoors

      No surprised at all. Ive seen it happen many times, usually during catfish season. I think the trout run out of things they prefer and have to make do with whatever they can find

      @@SeaSpankerOutdoors thats right trout never let me down when im catfishing, especially at those clear water lakes when im fishing deep; the trout at dixon, poway or fin & feather will beat the catfish to the cutbait sometimes at the buoy lines or deep areas.

    Another awesome vid, Rob. love the new drone and look forward to continued footage. I just got back from the Mid. I had to go back because last month I got the 3 day fishing permit and the 3 day day use permit thinking I needed both. They let me exchange the day permit to a fishing permit for another day but I had to use it this season. Got skunked the first time but caught 4 fish this time. 3 small Pilots from 1.5 to 3 lbs at Sandhole. (my favorite beach to fish) and I got 1 5lbs Summit at the rocks next to the boat launch at Pelican beach. The new Goldfish super tube was money. I got 1 of the Pilots and the Summit on it and got plenty of bites but had difficulty hooking up. I think I still need much more practice fishing barbless. I also stopped at June and Gull lakes on the way up. first time there and only fished an hour at each lake but got one small stocker at gull lake fishing from shore at the park. But on the way back I stopped at Lundy and got 3 1lb'ers in about 30 mins. they had just stocked and there was plenty of fish. I would have stayed longer but the wind was really blowing and about to rain and I was pretty fished out fishing 14hr/day for 3 days at the mid. it was a great trip. Thank you for all your videos. I am a much better fisherman because of you.

    Hello, wanted to let you know your videos have helped me tremendously at becoming a better trout angler! I’m going to be buying some of the Sinister Strand braid soon and was wondering what you recommend for spooling it on the reel? I’m assuming you use backer behind the braid to maximize the spool, but could you share any tips regarding the best way to do this. Thanks again for all your effort in these videos!

    • @SeaSpankerOutdoors
      @SeaSpankerOutdoors  2 місяці тому +1

      I definitely recommend using a good amount of backing before spooling the sinister. The Japanese reels we use have very shallow spools so we can spool just straight sinister and fill the spool. The American version of those reels has a much deeper spool so you need to spool some backing to get the proper amount of braid on there to make casting effective. If its an option for you, i have an old reel with no line on it so if I don’t get the proper amount of backing on the reel, i can take the braid off with the other reel without damaging the braid. Then I just adjust my backing amount and try again. Im working on a video to show how I do it. Should be out the next couple weeks

    Awesome video! With the split color tube colors like "Pink Smoke" any preference on rigging them? Lighter color facing up (on top) with the darker side on the bottom (facing down)? Does it make any difference at times? Not to get too technical with it if you know what I mean. So many choices these days with newer jig colors and combos being made. Thanks!

    • @SeaSpankerOutdoors
      @SeaSpankerOutdoors  2 місяці тому

      No worries. It really comes down to personal preference. Some like rigging them to have certain colors facing a certain way but I don’t. I just pop the jig head in and cast 🤘

    The trout were really eager for those jigs! One thing I've noticed is that stocked trout, unlike their wild counterparts, tend to avoid lingering around structures. They seem to prefer cruising around, expending a lot of energy in their search for food. This behavior might be due to their lack of experience in a wild habitat. Furthermore, "I believe catching stocked trout requires less skill as it often involves blind casting, whereas wild trout behave more like largemouth bass, lurking behind weed beds and striking at prey. I've witnessed this behavior firsthand. Additionally, holdover trout, once they've adapted to their environment over several years, tend to become more territorial.

    I only fish for trout in the eastern sierras so this was super helpful man! What’s the typical amount of time you let the 1/16 jig sink when it hits the water, before you start bringing it back slowly? Also was wondering if you’re still using the fly fishing snaps to change jigs quickly?

    • @SeaSpankerOutdoors
      @SeaSpankerOutdoors  2 місяці тому +1

      I do still use the snaps, love those things. As far as the 1/16s, it all depends on where I get bit. I usually start not letting it drop at all and doing a slow retrieve. Then Ill let it drop a couple seconds on the next cast and so on until i get bit. When doing a slow retrieve with the 1/16 its falling in the water column as well if your going slow enough. If you start hitting tge bottom just raise your rid tip and/or speed up your retrieve slightly

    • @ChristopherAlvarez111
      @ChristopherAlvarez111 2 місяці тому

      @@SeaSpankerOutdoors That is how I do it thanks to you Rob. I fan cast the area and slowly work down the water column until I find the fish or change jigs and start over. I work through most colors and types of jig and lures until I find what works. I also only catch 2 fish with the same lure before I try something else and I am trying to learn as much as possible on trout behavior.

    • @ChristopherAlvarez111
      @ChristopherAlvarez111 2 місяці тому

      The snaps are great but you have to inspect the eyelet as many of them aren't closed all the way. But they really speed up your fishing.
