At last a video that clearly explains how a synth works and how to properly operate one, and doesn't expect everyone to be a noob hating pompous tech nerd with a science degree or a super rich music producer with nothing else to do all day except continuously play with expensive equipment until he can make it do exactly what he wants it to do. A brilliant job well done,Sir! Liked, Favorited and Subscribed! More please! :-D
I wouldn't say the Moog Prodigy is "simple", but it sure looks fun in this guy's hands. He does a great job of explaining and demonstrating the 2001 different effects.
In 1979 I remember standing in a music shop looking the brand new Prodigy with something very near to a hard on. Sadly at 19 years old I didn't have the funds. But I do remember the longing I felt at the time. Love your vids. Cheers.
I'd been building my own little noisy machines for years before I could afford a proper one, but when the (horrible!) DX7s and the like came out, loads of people traded Prodigies and MS20s in. During the mid 1980s you could pick a second hand one really cheaply! My Prodigy was £80.
If you feel like explaining how to use my SQ-1 with my DAW (Logic) and Korg MS 20 mini, I'd love to hear your explanations on that subject. I'm having a helluva time getting it all synced up. :)
We might have a slight problem there. I had to google DAW to see what you were asking about! These days I try to avoid anything that needs a screen to make a sound. I did all that in the 1980's but couldn't keep up with the new gear so now I'm happily regressing! Sorry - but good luck!
Thanks for letting me know! I don't do facebook or any of that stuff, but very proud MOOG has found and liked my little vid. It's like getting an endorsement from God!
I got an MF102 with not much idea of what to do with it (I'm a bass player) thanks to channels like yours, I'm getting into this amazing world of machines doing blip blip blip sounds. Thanks!
40 years on, and still got my model 1, along with original packing case, polystyrene packing pieces and original documentation! -You missed one switch though! - the "TRACKING" on the VCF "off" "half" and "full" - made soooo much difference when recreating "real world" instruments - still, when you have to explain to the kids "monophonic" means, and how the signal paths are managed by components not algorithms in a digital processor, I suppose something has to give!
thanks so much for this entertaining and informative demo/lesson! I knew all about this synth and how analog synths work (i’ve got a jx3p and my dads yamaha cs20m) but this prodigy is a synth my dad owned and sold many many years ago and deeply regrets selling it. I wish he still had it too! I’ll get one someday. Don’t lose faith in young people not playing & learning about real synths! I’m 18, own a dx7 among other digital synths as well as the analog ones but only hardware, no software :) Looking forward to watching more videos on your channel, thanks for the content
Thank you for this video! I've had an early Prodigy (one of the first 1000 made) for almost 10 years and I never really figured it out. This video is really helpful, and thank you for not being a condescending techy know-it-all! My Prodigy only has one line-out, can this go through a modulator and then through an amp? I don't have one, but someone said my synth is useless because it only has one line-out... And that I have to modify it to have multiple outs.. Or should I just use it straight up through an amp? That's what I've been doing and been getting some cool sounds. Thanks to your vid I wanna dust it off and give it another go!
Thanks for the nice feedback! All you do is connect the line out to an amp via a modulator or pedal if you have one. I have no idea what your friend is saying about multiple line outs unless it's suggesting you can access some of the control voltages to drive something else. Don't do it! You've got a classic machine so don't start hacking into it ~ just have fun!
I love my Moog Prodigy too! I have the 336A model... How steady is your modulation? It seems nearly impossible to have a drum machine playing, sync the modulation, and have it sustain and keep to the beat. On mine, I have to keep tweaking it very slightly to keep it on beat if I play one note. Not sure if that is just my unit or if that happens with everyone. Still a great machine - I use my Moog Prodigy in every video on my channel! Sweet synth
You're asking a lot of an old analogue synth to keep perfect time! These things were built with pitch bend and modulation/tremolo so the keyboard player could compete on stage with the guitarist, while the drummer was drunk and the bass player was leering at the audience. Nobody could have imagined the standards that modern machines expect to work to. Yes, the drift in timing and pitch can be a bit frustrating, but to me it's part of their charm!
For anyone that wants to read about how oscilators etc. works in text format, here is a good explanation for those modules (here for the Moog Model 15 iOS app): forum.audiob.us/discussion/13426/moog-model-15-tips-for-noobs

Many thanks for your nice comments! I hope to do a few more synth vids in 2016 when I can think of some more good subjects to cover.
thanks to you i really started learning to play my prodigy! great vibes all over, thank you!

Thanks for explaining, you're a great teacher!
Fantastic - I learned how to do things with my Moog Sub 37 oscillator sync which I never thought possible before. More please!
Simple, straight forward and to the point while being entertaining. Good job
This is great. I learned very little I didn't know, but had fun the whole time.

very very educational...technical and fun....simple English language....I love it...keep it coming...respect
You are an excellent teacher and I love your passion!
I could listen to you all night!
I thoroughly enjoyed that. No one has ever been able to explain synths to me so well, whilst keeping me entertained the entire time. Well done!
Thanks - I hope it helps!

murderousmaths Analog synths, Nothin better. I lived in the mountains of North Carolina where Bob built that gem of a synth. Thank you
This is exactly what I needed. I just got a prodigy today. Thanks a whole bunch!
Good luck with it!
Why can't I have neighbors like this?
Watching your video makes me love my Prodigy even more :) I had it upgraded with a midi interface at Lintronics and now it's just perfect.
This was very fun to follow, even if you know all of it. Good presentation skills!
Mate this video just got shared by Moog on Facebook! :D

If I had just seen this video before reading all the Model 15 manuals ... you explain this in a very very good way! Good didactic!
Love your enthusiasm !! great stuff sir !
Awesome video and great energy!! I love it!
Lovely lovely video! Thank you!!
Thanks! New Ring Modulator video coming soon.
Brilliant video! You are the best!
Another awesome video!!! Thanks for sharing !!
Thank you so much for your great videos !
this was absolutely great!!!
great video! great sounds! you sir are awesome!
Rewatching your synth/Moogerfooger videos, these are so much fun! I'd love to see you do a similar video on the MS-20.
Thanks for the feedback - I hope to do an MS-20 video soon, but it's not easy as there are already a lot of very good MS-20 videos out there!

Fair comment! I didn't mention the sync input at the back either, makes for a lot of fun when sequencing.
@@murderousmaths mine doesn't have one of them!
Thank you so much for this video!
Great video, you're the man.
great video...I also have a prodigy that I haven't cracked open in a while...you motivated me! thanks
Hi! So glad you liked the video. I've just put up a Ring Mod video too if you're interested! Hope your Prodigy is behaving!
great video!
super super cool! thank you very much, it is very helpful :)

Thanks for your message!
I nearly traded my Korg MS20 and Prodigy for a DX7 back in the 1980s. So glad I didn't!
I am a synth nerd.. thought your video would rubbish but you are infectious m8! Great teacher actually
David Lewis nerds can spell, you..not so much
Molly Ringmod What are You, the spelling nazi? Spend your nights alone, do you
I saw that and I loved it.
I have one I bought for bass mainly. I heard it said some people even prefer the PROD to the Mini.
Wonderful!
Amazing !!!!
Great video
I love the ending 🎊
The Fred Dibnah of synthesisers.
That's all I ever wanted to hear. I can retire with a big smile now... and dream of a giant steam-powered moog vibrating a mill chimney to dust!
Moog himself said that it can be pronounced either way. Moog sounds cooler.
this is great :D
The trills made me want to hear some Blackadder synth licks ...
If the 7th Doctor (McCoy) was a gear head he would be played by this guy! Great video.
If anyone asks - I'm available! Can do it in drag if necessary. Will bring my own heels and lipstick.
Andy Fletcher used the Moog Prodigy at the beginning of Depeche Mode.
Would really like to see you do something on the Odyssey if you have the time.
Thanks for asking! I'll certainly bear it in mind.
Handy video

How much does it costs to install a CV gate into the early model of Prodigy? The later Prodigy has CV, but older Prodigy does not.
Sorry, I've no idea. You'll need to find a synth repair firm and see what they quote. The Kentonuk site might be able to help.
If Moog is Mogue, how do you pronounce the Rogue synth? Is it the Roog?
I've no idea! But "Rogue" sounds better to me.
@@murderousmaths Moog himself said that it can be pronounced either way.
Well now I see where LFO got their name
If someone ask "how the Prodigy choose their name" this video is an answer Liam Howlett used this synthesizer :D
God love the English...
