    Lyrics:
Those tears on a gaping voice
Who's stretching arms match the hunger of mine
There lips will they never join
But always draw me closer and further entwined
With a promise dealer understand all freedoms fade away
To a point of view where many different pathways meet
And we're standing on this precipice with nothing much to gain save
But the deep blue screams of falling dreams with our next mov
    Heaven hide your eyes
    Heaven's eyes will never dry
The shades of a thousand steel
Come flashing by my face in the fury of war
    In desolation and abandoned fields
The hungry make their stand when they'll stand for no more
Hear the passion in their voices see the heaven in their eyes
Their hopes and schemes are waiting dreams of less than paradise
And sometimes we make promises we never mean to keep
For blackmail is the only deal a promise dealer sees
    Heaven hide your eyes
    Heaven's eyes will never dry

Sting on backing vocals; Dave Gilmour on lead guitar; Mark Egan on fretless bass; Carlos Alomar on rhythm guitar. Insane line-up. One of Duran Duran's best songs (top 10 for me) from their massive catalog.

Speaking as someone who picked up "So Red the Rose" upon its release, I've always felt a kind of personal connection to the album, something I honestly can't explain. I always liked the songs, the moody take on the Duran Duran sound, and Simon's gripping, overdubbed vocal harmonies; but now I'm also hearing things in the background that went unnoticed before -- like all kinds of touches from Nick Rhodes, and the tasty work of the high-caliber session players (including longtime Bowie sidekick Carlos Alomar). "The Promise" is certainly a highlight, even if the single mix blunts much of its drama.

Simon Le Bon described So Red the Rose as "the most pretentious album ever made," while AllMusic called it "the best album Duran Duran never made". Musicians who contributed to the album included guitarists David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Carlos Alomar (David Bowie), pianist Herbie Hancock, Sting (who provided backing vocals on "The Promise"), Grace Jones (who provided the spoken-word interlude on "Election Day"), bass player Mark Egan of the Pat Metheny Group (whose distinctive fretless sound can be recognised in "The Promise", "El Diablo", and "Lady Ice"), Masami Tsuchiya, and David Van Tieghem, a percussionist from New York.

He is one of the best, most cryptic song writers ever. And sorely underrated. When I wad young growing up in the 80’s, I never truly tried to decipher their songs. I just knew I really really loved Duran Duran and their music and style. Then as I got older, I started interpreting them and light bulbs went on inside my brain. 😂 Simon always intended to leave it up to interpretation of the listener. Throughout the years though, he has divulged the meanings of some of their songs. Some surprising and some not so surprising. I’m still trying to figure some songs out. I’ll always be a fan.

So red the rose an absolute masterpiece of an album from the start to the finish.
Highly underrated but should be held in the same respect as The queen is dead , The Joshua tree , or Depeche modes Some great reward or Black celebration
    PERFECTION

Hey idiot.. never equate depeche mode with Arcadia. Duran Duran has more hits and better songs than gay depeche mode... If anything, dm should be held to the same standards and respect as Arcadia, not the other way around... poser idiot

That whole album is perfect. The radio edit robs the introduction of its full drama, but that’s a minor quibble. Love that this was considered unsuitable for the US audience, who got Goodbye Is Forever instead.

Maybe , more underated album from 80's. Gilmur, Sting, Sakamoto, Grace Jones like guests on this record show us how much DD was huge. They in that time was kids in middle twentiest but look who's playing on the record . Words are not enough. Listen the sound of record ,production ,playing and singing, lyrics and atmosphere . Today 35 years later this songs still rules. Today's shit you forget for day.
Salute to the DD. I'm now 50 years old and I am so glad that I've been growing up in that beautifull time.

I will never forget seeing the video for The Promise on SOUNDS on a Saturday morning in Early 1986. I recorded the video and the interview with Simon Le Bon while he was in Australia. I still have the original VHS. I need to upload it to You Tube. The Promise was played in full that morning and I loved Arcadia so much. They are THE ultimate, I wished they made more music. The Promise is so powerful. World Class Masterpiece +
