I’m not a mechanic, I like wrenching on my own stuff and I like to buy good tools. I have Wright, SK, Snap-On, Proto, Mac, Matco, Craftsman, Tekton, Dewalt, & few Harbor Freight pieces. Last major purchase was a Snap-On MG325 3/8 impact. Buy what you can afford, buy what you want.
You’re spot on, Dow. One of the few Snap-on products I have is the SGA102BR, 2-pc hose removal set. Good ole Mr. Clay from Koon Trucking showed them on his channel a few years ago. I liked the design better than what anybody else offered and not being pointy, so I bought the set from the local Snap-on truck. I haven’t poked a hole in any radiator or fuel line hose yet. Then close to a year later I see a similar set offered by NAPA in their Carlyle line and Cornwell. The Snap-on rep probably wasn’t to keen on me just paying cash for what I bought.😜
I’m 47. I fix my own vehicles. I bought my first snap on ratchet a month ago. I love it. Better than my old craftsman from the 90s. I don’t buy a lot of tools from snap on. Just small items I need. Pliers, dead blow ball peen, ratchet, mini pry bar. These things make me happy. And I’m at a point in my life I can afford some nicer tools.
I really miss Sears before they were bought out and still had tool catalogs. All the sockets and ratchets were US made with a full warranty. They were a great deal when on sale. They'd have tool sale catalogs where you could buy master sets of every socket they made. Their biggest mistake was shutting down their catalog operation just before the internet took off. It would have transitioned over perfectly. The only Craftsmen socket I ever had break was a sparkplug socket. Probably because I has trying to take out a plug when the engine was too warm and I was using a breaker bar.
Glad to be at the point where I’m loading my boxs with quality tools. Nice boxes as well. But started out with a red $300 craftsman box $100 Lowe’s tool set my wife made me get 😂 was going to put it back. And determination.
Because if you have ever been on the side of a catastrophic loss and your franchisee’s got out of the business, then there is ZERO Snap On support regarding your past purchases. When I called Corporate to get a proof of purchase for ten’s of thousands of dollars worth tools for my insurance company….the sweet lady from Kenosha told me they don’t keep a database for purchases, unless it’s done from SO credit. Tool truck purchases don’t count for that, and if your SO guy gets out from the business, then you’re on your own. That’s why.
That’s nuts!! You’d think they’d just warranty their damn tools! I mean it’s their tool regardless! That guarantee should carry on with that tool forever considering the price, harbor freight don’t even ask for proof of purchase
I kept every receipt I got from my Snap on dealer and at the end of the year I would have him print out all my purchases for the year. File it away until needed.
Because of your channel I bought the snap on brute long reach cordless ratchet. It’s my go to on every job. I also still use my Milwaukee electric ratchets. Different tools for different reasons. Like you said if you can afford it do it.
Good points in this video. I feel having nice brand name tools are good but you won't get back what you paid and that's what people don't understand when hard times come and no one is willing to pay what they are asking for the tool box,tools, etc
Tool trucks are great for the lifer whose making master tech wages. But, I’ve worked with so many young techs that are not putting anything into retirement. Before I bought a single tool truck brand my house was paid and I had zero debt. I’ll add I worked 2 jobs to get that accomplished for 6 years straight. Even after this I was very selective (pliers, ratchets, sockets, wrenches). On the way there I found out what lasted and what actually would warranty. Best of luck.
I have Snap On tools and love them. But with Icon now on the scene (which is easily 99-95% as good in terms of quality and performance), I will probably only buy Snap On for specialty tools.
Old school mechanic here. Hope you got those for free as for like an advertisement. One of those pliers is $53.50 & the other is $61.50, HELL,NO! I would not pay that price for two pliers. Hell you can get a 10 piece pliers set by Kobalt for $44.99 & there are good pliers. Or a set of Gearwrench 6 piece pitbull pliers for $64.21. Overall, Snap-on is crap and there products in tools are way overpriced, The only thing I think, that there is quality in Snap-on products is there wrenches, and that's about it. But hay, that's just my opinion.
The tool trucks are pricing themselves out of business. Technicians today have lots of decent alternatives that allow you to have the tools you need and not carry tool truck debt. Techs need to ask themselves who they want their hard work to benefit......themselves or tool companies that got greedy. Snap-on and the others........fugget about em.
To many arnt saving for retirement. It doesn’t magically get there in the last 15 years. Being disciplined by your choice is as much skill as it is choice.
@@d1986ben Very true! Young people have to start early. If they would live on 85-90% of their income, and save/invest the leftover, when they got old and ready to hang up the tools, they would be all set. But everybody wants to live beyond their means and have instant gratification right now.
I see the drug dealer pulled up snap on dealer. It’s a bad habit to break but snap on harbor freight yes they have quality at the US general and they have junk but they dealer comes right to you as far as snap on you don’t have to go to the store they don’t have it in stock. You have to go back the dealer goes right to you, and if you buy enough from him, he gives you deals sometimes but it’s the hard and steel in the tools
My Snap On tools are heirlooms. The nephew will get them when I’m gone unless he pissed me off, then they go in the cryogenic conex box with me, the toy safe, my bike, the TV and all the other shit I’m taking with me to the afterlife
I wish every new tech would start off with a decent set of tools they can afford to pay for all at once and not go into debt. You can do your job without getting on a truck and going into debt. The tool market is flooded with quality tools today that don't cost an arm and a leg. Now after you have been in the field for a while and are sure this is what you want to do and you have saved your money. Then if you want to go buy off the tool trucks go ahead but don't go into debt doing it. Pay as you go and within a year or two you will have a very nice set of Snap-On, Matco, or Mac tools without ever going into debt. Best of all when you buy that set of sockets that are on sale you won't be paying interest on the tool debt and end up paying three times what the sockets actually sold for.
To me the sockets and wrenches are their most overpriced and overrated tools. Their $400 set of 3/8'' sockets last as long and do the same work as a $30 Sunex set.
Going to school to be a tech. I’ve had cheap brands at home. For home use they don’t get used an awful lot and it’s fine. It actually makes me appreciate having the the nicer tools.
When there is a surplus, save it, don’t upgrade your lifestyle. Be content with what you have and save the extra when it’s there. You’ll thank yourself later.
Do you need it? Probably not, but if you can afford it there's nothing wrong with wanting nice things especially if that makes you happy at a place you spend that much time
Good advice, I remember reading something years and years ago about buying tools. Advice I took from it, buy the best you can at that time and stay away from debt. As an airline mechanic we do use toolboxes, I bought my snappy 7 drawer in like 1997. Do I need to upgrade? Yes but, at this point that box is family. BTW you pronounce Hyundai correctly. I worked for the company and that's exactly how the Korean bosses pronounced it.
ive started with craftsman tools and now i have a collection that would rival most mechanics of 5-10 yrs in the trade. ive been doing concrete for 29 yrs but i enjoy working/fixing/making thing. have nice tools makes it that much more enjoyable. after i filled my split top snappy cart, i started buying the specialty tools because its cheaper to that and do the work myself than take it to a shop. tha basics are truck brand tools, mostly snap on but if i see some review or vid on yt about a tool, i pick it up if its going to make things easier. people are going to buy what people want and all those who reeeee about how other people spend their money......go find a cry closet or a safe space and screech your rainbow colored head off all you want. we dont care what you have to say. after all....we dont tell you what colored rainbow dildo to use, do we? of course not. its none of our damn business because we dont care what you spend your money on thanks justin. one foot in front of the other, brother and youll be back to where ever it is you want to be.
The deep offset Snap On wrench set I got used, is one of my favorite go to wrench sets I own? Thought my Craftsman Pro set was just fine, until I got the Snappy set, and there is no comparison in strength? Definitely worth buying if nothing else from Snap On, in my opinion?
I would buy couple snap on ratchets because they're nice. But others tools, cheaper stuff will do the same thing. Snap on impact sockets are not one spec better than Pittsburgh
Snap on offers exclusive proprietary items of which many are arguably the best in ergonomics, materials, annd workmanship since 1920. But they also market and charge a premium for other merchandise available anywhere else, the same things sold for less. Dedicated fans dont mind paying that extra premium. Management is top heavy compared to "the competition" (as Snap on management fearfully refers to them) and those guys get hefty compensation at their following's expense.
The 100 year argument of Snap-on vs who ever lol. My opinion If your going to be a mechanic for a long time you should buy at least buy Snap-on ratchets, torque wrenches, compression and leak down testers just for the quality and knowing its accurate. Of course only if you can afford it.
I had a screw that other screwdrivers just wanted to strip but the #2 snap on got it done…the only problem I see is when people buy stuff just because the color matches their box and they put it on credit smh
Alot of it is the service from my dealer. Goes above and beyond. And the tools we can depend on in heavy line work. Btw i want to recommend the new snap on cable fuel line disconnect pliers. Honestly they are the best thing iv brought in years. Same as the hose "cable " pliers but for fuel line
Guys will literally load their tool box full of stuff that they never use. I understand collecting cool things like cars, vinyl, watches...etc, but collecting tools baffels me.
that one tool might save you hours of Labor and while used 1x or 2x might pay for itself during that 1 job. I understand the collectors too who might have a connection to a brand or trade. I have plenty of tools that I have used just few times but they paid for themselves in just 1 use.
I liked in your video back in the day about $1000 snap on sockets you admitted yourself and a lot of mechanics get "high" on snapon and make bad decisions based on wanting to impress people
I used to knock my mechanic brother for spending 80k on his snap on tools until I learned he can charge $2,000 for an oil change on a Lamborghini or 15K for a clutch swap.
you have a good snap on rep he wants you to try out the new tools. mine would never do that if i asked him for that he would look at me like theres a dickfor on my head.
Dudes tool truck is a freaking mess. Back in the 80’s when I started I’m the buiz Snap-on was the staple these days with Mac and Matco the Snap-on truck is a over priced corporate run rolling rip off.
Snap-On buy it, use it for 30+ years and at the end of your career sell it for more than you originally paid or pass it on to your kid who can use it for another 30 years.
Used to be true. The old Snap on ratchets aren't even up to par with a Pittsburgh anymore. Trust me I have plenty of S.O. in my boxes. AND they won't warranty the old stuff because they don't make it anymore. Snap On is on borrowed time. My new dealer knows this. He only stops in every 2 months now. Anything I buy is pretty much charity.
@@motorbreath7174 The driver at my workplace will give you the current version of the tool if they don't make it anymore or can't fix it. Old S.O. tools still can be warrantied depending on if you have a good driver or not. Mine also doesn't care if you are the original owner or not. As long as it's S.O./Bluepoint, he'll warranty it.

I have several broken tools in a box. They all say snapon.

I had the smallest, cheapest, ugliest box in the whole dealership, but still made more money than anyone else in the shop.

Snap on is very well made but, very, very expensive. If they didn't have a pay overtime approach to selling they would be under tomorrow.
Snapon hardlines like sockets, wrenches and maybe tool boxes but other than that theres lot more choices that might even better than snapon.

I use Sunex impact sockets on just about everything. All of the chrome sets I own collect dust.

I only use those pliers for my air hoses. Don't really see them being useful for something else.

There's a time and place for just about every type of tool. The guy starting out has to have the cheaper stuff usually.

It's nice to a have alot tools to make automotive work easy I am not even a paid mechanic just do my own work .
