He’s so charismatic and fantastic that you can argue quite a few roles and moments. I definitely agree that Rust Cole is far and away a better and more memorable performance than in Wolf of Wall Street. To suggest that he’s better in small doses is obviously asinine as well.
As soon as I saw what The Rewatchables movie was going to be, I was excited. But then I saw that Wesley Morris was cohosting and got less excited. He can be a bit of a buzzkill sometimes. I like when the cohost actually like the movie they’re analyzing. They don’t have to think it’s flawless, but at least appreciate it.

Wesley Morris is borderline unwatchable I really don’t mean any offense, it’s just too much Like, bro just talk about the film Anyhow love this movie and love this podcast, big ups guys
Wesley makes this unwatchable. Swap out the races of the main characters? John Grisham wrote such a powerful book and the audacity of Wesley to suggest just race swapping most of the main characters shows how little he knows
I think a lot folks in the comment section you include either don't know what the white savior trope is or do know what is and don't see why it's a problem.
Did not expect this criticism about this movie tbh...this movie was GREAT! A lil cringe at times and there's no way the verdict by the letter of the law should've been what it was(although he got off on temporary insanity which i guess is POSSIBLE) but still an EXCELLENT movie with EXCELLENT acting. My guy trashing the movie because it didn't show more of the black man's pov and chose to follow the white lawyer but Carl Lee was in jail the whole time and I personally woulda been bored if we followed Lee's family as the focus so the only person left to follow is the white lawyer and the aftermath of him taking the case. Y'all are the ONLY ppl I've ever heard have such a negative take on this movie...but too each. BTW A Long Kiss Goodnight was also a GREAT movie. I SWEAR I'm gonna re-make EVERY FILM someone says "it can't be made today"... because 10 times outta 10 it can
Well of course Wesley would have that take. And the idea that only a Black person would direct It now? Should White people only direct white films, gay people direct gay films, etc? Bizzare thinking
He went a tad bit to far but it's definitely absurd that we got barely any scenes of Carl Lee's family a better movie definitely would've shown scenes with the siblings and mothers emotional fall out of the daughter/sister being raped along with the possibility of the Patriarch facing life in prison. For this movie to be set in the deep south during the 90's obviously it makes sense for the lawyer to be a white male but they definitely went heavy on the white savior trope.
@MrOctober44 your point is valid but it completely ignores the main issue that Wesley raised which is the film glamorizing the KKK, there's nothing glamorous about that terrorist organization.
@@King_Mac80 Perhaps a better movie would've touched on that aspect a bit but it was a courtroom drama so I can't fault it for focusing on the courtroom aspect with glimpses of the lawyers life as a direct result from taking the case... which included building the case and the violence that followed. I saw the point of the movie as being a message to white ppl specifically to take color out of the equation or rather view blacks as equals.... the speech Sammy L gave MM at the end about what it would take for him to set Sammy L free kinda justified it for me why the story followed the lawyer ... showing the social pressures of keeping things status quo.... even showing why even "good" white ppl fear losing their white privilege in the face of justice and doing what's right... Imo very similar to how "good" white ppl don't speak up when their racists friends or family say the N word in front of them in private...out of fear of being looking at different...just showing the real life difficulty of changing an entire race's mindset when it comes to standing for justice.... But again I can agree it could've used SOME scenes of the family's hardship. The movie isn't perfect I will admit but the pod def went in a completely different direction than I thought when I first clicked the video lol. Also I don't see how it glorified the KKK. It showed prideful racists joining them, one burned alive from his disruptive stance, and them getting arrested in the end.
Wasn’t the verdict not guilty by temporary insanity, although the fact he brought a loaded gun to the place the prisoners were would probably nullify that argument. So pretty much the jury just did what it felt like…
Of course not. Bill does not touch anything political with a ten foot pole, and he’s smart as hell for doing so. I’d bet $100 bucks that he leans right though. Bill’s a smart dude.
The book isn't based on a true story. A horrible crime was committed and in a nearby town and that got Grisham thinking about a father avenging the death of his child. The whole story is completely made up.
If you are a Gen X'er and grew up loving blues-based rock bands/artists like the Stones, Zeppelin, Eric Clapton etc., you will most likely know Joe Seneca as, "The one and only Willie Brown", from the movie Crossroads. Surprised that Simmons, as a Gen X'er and a big Walter Hill fan, doesn't know Seneca from there.
Wesley tries too hard to explain things. He's educated. We get it. Don't shove it down our throats. Bill should have a chat to Wesley and ask him to tone down the Harvard vocabularies
Jury nullification. The judge is to determine the law, the jury, the facts. A jury can decide to do whatever they wish. The jury is a black box, they can really do whatever they want to do. This is why voir dire is so important.
I definitely have to go watch one of those youtube lawyers break down this movie because logically I'd think it would've been smarter if they said this trial ended in a inconclusive trial and the state just decided to not retry the case (even the state not redoing this trial is also unbelievable)
Where are they reading this cast list from? Tonea Stewart plays Samuel L Jackson’s wife in this and is not married to him in real life. His real life wife is LaTanya Richardson who is not in this movie.
As someone white that grew up in Mississippi and lived in New York for half my life neither Bill or Wesley get the movie at all. You truly have to be from the south and have friends in all communities to understand the hypocrisy on all sides to want change. Too many people like Bill and Wesley only see the tropes not the substance for basic people in the south to grip on too
Oh, yes - i had need to just comment one thing. Somebody who konwos stuff, confirms, that Long Kiss Good Night is one of the best action movies ever. Excatly it is!!!
I have to wonder how good this movie could have been if they weren't so cartoonishly over-the-top in their depiction of the South, and didn't have to use the white savior trope.
Yall do realize this is a jake Brigance movie not a Carl Lee Hailey movie correct? So it's not racist that they spend more time with Matthew McConaughey's character over Samuel Jackson's character. I get it every time Wesley Morris is on a podcast he has to make everything about race and throw the victim card out at every turn.
After going back and watching several old episodes of The Rewatchables……and unless I missed it…..how has Aliens not been covered?…..if for no other reason than Bill Paxton’s one liners……
They keep a lot of the biggest movies in their pocket on purpose. e.g. Pulp Fiction is their self-admitted “break the glass” emergency or final episode candidate. They only recently did the first Alien. The original concept of the pod was to highlight movies that were not expected to become Cable Classics / timeless rewatchables during their initial release. Recently the pod has veered closer to featuring mainstream classics but "avoiding the obvious choices" remains a core tenet of the show.
Oh, something easy to cover. Been on tv for decades. Amazing stuff. So, is The Thing 1982. Not on Disney. No, the Primal Fear loves are not epic. Nor, the Pesci stuff. Yet, enough embrace Bill. lol
The reason there are no more courtroom dramas is because nobody in America believes there is a functioning justice system in this country anymore. The assumption that we are all equal in the eyes of the law and in front of a jury of our peers simply isn't there anymore so they aren't a dramatic premise.
This plus the emergence of the true crime genre. People would rather see a docuseries on netflix taking a much deeper dive into a specific case; before the case ends with 'and then someone wrote a big check and made the case go away without justice being served'
LOL. Because people believed It in the 90's?! It's gone because of their being a documentary on every infamous crime, reality tv, UA-cam. Plus Hollywood running It into the ground. You're acting like the 90's was some age of innocence like the fifties.😂
Matthew McConaughey as Rust Cole is his absolute best role. Can’t believe Wolf of Wall street was said 😂
