This song is terrible. In 1988 (or thereabouts) I went to Jeff's house and got his autograph. All my family were alive then. Now they're all gone. Jeff moved from England to America, and now he's more famous than ever.
@@nightisright1873 I listened to ELO, obsessively, for a number of years. Jeff chose not to place this track on an official ELO album. That in itself should set alarm bells ringing. I think it sounds drab and uninspired. I'd like to know what Jeff thinks.
OMG!!!!!! For as good as the core 10-song album is (which I bought on vinyl), this absolutely blows rest of it away!!! Why he didn't feel generous enough to include this and the two other bonus cuts on the vinyl is beyond me. In any event, I sure hope that these bonus cuts see some kind of worldwide vinyl release, even if on a 10" EP for Record Store Day or something!
+Alan Elam The same thing happened with "Balance of Power" back in 1986. The track "Destination unknown" was only released as a B-side track on the single "Calling America". It was not until the album was remastered many years later, that the track was included on CD. I still think that "Destination unknown" is the best track on Balance of Power.
Actually I think it's the record companies that withhold songs, because it's that way with all my groups (ABBA, ELO, Queen, Styx Bee Gees etc..), they withhold good songs for fans to spend extra money to DL them or a better term is milking the fans.
A true masterpiece. This song combines everything about E.L.O, the Zoom era added to the "classic" era, I don't understand why it isn't included in the European version of the CD.
In the Japanese version of the album, this song was included as a bonus track, along with Fault Line and Blue. Sadly we only get two out of the three bonus tracks in the US. :(
So glad I ordered the Japanese Deluxe edition of "Alone in the Universe". I got it in 3 days after the Japanese release date. The album sounds so good on the Blu-spec CD2 format!
I bought both the US versions of the CD and album and I didn't get this little gem on either. But I'm glad I was able to discover it here...thanks for posting!
Jan Willem is right! With "ZOOM" a Japanese bonus was awesome tune "Long Black Road" which nearly blew away the rest of the album, (though I feel that "State of Mind" is slightly better). I don't understand it either as, perhaps Jeff could use some advice as to what should be released as singles. I think that this is better than one of the tunes Jeff is pushing on his current (and hopefully not last) album.
+CX TRAX Agreed! Long Black Road is an extremely powerful song, which could've been a massive hit with proper marketing. Even my 13-year old son loves it ;-) It can easily be added to any Best-of ELO CD. Btw you can listen to that track here ua-cam.com/video/q6ilf7fqek4/v-deo.html
I really hate the way record companies jack around with different versions of a release by country. I have the regular release, and On My Mind isn't on it. Damn!
+Dafydd Llywych-Hwllch That's what I thought, I've just bought this brilliant album but these three tracks are missing. Blasted money grabbing bastards!
Have to agree with those who say this should have been on the European album - I'd have gladly sacrificed "Faultline" for it! A classic track, with the usual JL "spot the influence" touches in places ... opening notes highly reminiscent of Queen's "Teo Torriatte", and the "I never needed anybody" chorus sounds eerily like Elvis Costello on vocals. I do hope this song will be made available on iTunes :).
Derek - my understanding is that CDs are expensive in Japan and as a result people tended to but cheaper import CDs from USA and Europe. To combat that, Japanese CDs contain extra songs that will encourage people to buy the "official" Japanese releases. Personally I love Lucky Motal which I think was on American Hustle CD.
So Fault line makes the deluxe version and On my mind gets dropped, in North America .The guy that made that decision is an idiot who knows nothing about the ELO sound.
+Jan-Willem van Aalst I guess I'm not the only one who thought that when I heard it ;) Pity he didn't write a new chorus and slot it in there because the other parts are great (as usual). I can understand why he went to the same well twice though, as Lonesome Lullabye is right up there with his best work, probably my favourite song from Zoom.
+Jan-Willem van Aalst But 'Lonesome lullaby' was released in Japan. Many artists prefer add bonus trakcs on the Japanese editions, don't know why, I can hardly figure it, and it's not the first time for ELO and Jeff.
The finest song on the album, maybe, arguably the best ELO sounding song he has made in years,and... it wasn`t included on my North American deluxe version of Alone in the Universe.Only in Japan..Like wtf? Why?
Thanks , possibly, but that applies to many songs , by many artists (think George Harrison's) My Sweet Lord, and the Chiffons He`s so fine,,The chorus may be close but the two songs sound totally different to me.Also, there`s 14 yrs between Zoom and Alone in the universe.Personally I think he could got away with it... :)
If you really like Jeff Lynne's ELO, I'd also recommend Richard Tandy's 1984 album "Earthrise" which he recorded with Dave Morgan, who was also part of the ELO lineup from 1981 to 1986. The entire album is here: ua-cam.com/play/PLVCl_bGV7oXGJ3DbEoFOKr7MCq-PUclzT.html
Thank you, I was just wondering which song it reminded me of. I have to say I like Lonesome Lullaby better. This sounds, well, frankly not very good. A mess really.
there are a lot of other songs on that album that resemble other songs more closely then this one i.e 'Love and Rain' - 'Showdown'; 'Dirty to the Bone'- 'Moment in Paradise'; 'When the night comes' - 'Sorrow bout to fall'; 'The sun will shine on you' - 'Without someone'; ' I'm leaving you' - 'Blown away'; 'One step at a time' - 'I'm leaving you'
@@kurtmorr I have been having thoughts about how many recent songs sound like they are reusing older songs, It seems I'm not the only one who thinks so. I know many people yearn for Jeff to make new songs "in the old style" with lots of strings etc. I wouldn't go that far, but I sure would like some more originality, more tune, and less repetition/recycling parts of older songs.
Armchair theatre is in my opinion a very underrated album Lynne at his brilliant best this track a bit Elvis like ❤
this song rules, what a hidden gem. His voice never sounded cooler and I love the production style
in the name of all that is holy...why wasn't this on "Alone In The Universe"?! Mistake. Best song..period.
I agree, awesome song.
This song is terrible. In 1988 (or thereabouts) I went to Jeff's house and got his autograph. All my family were alive then. Now they're all gone. Jeff moved from England to America, and now he's more famous than ever.
Tim Wright why is it terrible ?
@@nightisright1873 I listened to ELO, obsessively, for a number of years. Jeff chose not to place this track on an official ELO album. That in itself should set alarm bells ringing. I think it sounds drab and uninspired. I'd like to know what Jeff thinks.
No I personally think that the strongest song on Alone in the universe is one step at a time
jeff lynne master of the fucking universe....
I agree
Yes.. agreed
Another Gem by the Genius Jeff Lynne.
Pure genius...thank you dad for turning me on to Jeff lynne much love
your dad turns you on ?
Another classic from the man himself, pure magic, and Jeff I believe in you, just classic xx👍🎸
never understood why the japanese releases get all these amazing bonus tracks. i wish they came to apple music in the U.S. !

bloody brilliant song! could be hit single for sure
+Gino Sandora . . . I unequivocally agree! This is by far and away the best song of all the new ones!
Jeff Lynne el mejor, El maestro humilde, el genio inigualable, la voz mas romantica y enigmatica de todos los tiempos.
El mas grande.
Perfect song with perfect harmony.
Woooooooo......Jeff Lynne forever...!!!
Jeff Lynne is a music genius, a miracle. LOVE LOVE LOVE his music since I heard the first ELO song on the radio when I was fifteen.
Yes he is!!!!! Absolutely the beautifullest and bestest songs ever. Very well said!!!
Maestro! no puedes ser mejor. Love you Jeff!
Great song ❤
Reminds me of Cry Baby Cry off the Zoom album and that was fantastic too. Love you Jeff!
Lonesome Lullaby? Yeah
Jeff Lynne, músico sorprendente, brillante, modesto, destellante, genial, apoteósico, delirante, luminoso, sobresaliente, magnífico, espléndido, deslumbrante, resplandeciente, reluciente, admirable, descollante.......................................
Like a fine wine..Jeff Lynne 💋⚘💋😘😎
Funny how what would be the best track on most other peoples' albums is a 'bonus track on this album. One word of explanation - quality!
Una ves mas tenia q ser JEFF LYNNY con este EXCELENTE ALBUM y con esta maravillosa cancion GRACIAS GRACIAS JEFF TE AMO.
why this song wasn't included on the album as a regular is beyond me. It's the best song on it
Right? This and "Blue" are probably the 2 best, and they didn't even release them as singles -- I'm baffled.
Actually I think it's the record companies that withhold songs, because it's that way with all my groups (ABBA, ELO, Queen, Styx Bee Gees etc..), they withhold good songs for fans to spend extra money to DL them or a better term is milking the fans.
Happy 68th Birthday Jeff Lynne!!! Same day as my youngest son. Long live the Maestro!
I love Jeff Lynne"s songs...amazing, perfect sensitivity !!! ...BRAZIL....
Simply a genius...
More Jeff is always a good thing!
A true masterpiece. This song combines everything about E.L.O, the Zoom era added to the "classic" era, I don't understand why it isn't included in the European version of the CD.
My fiancée bought me tickets to see ELO when they come to Mi.... that was a officer level gift... thanks Amber...
I have only just heard this one and it's my favourite one from the new stuff. Thoughtfull and I love the riff when the song changes direction.
Jeff Lynne, the fisherman's friend - never short of a spare hook or two;-)
Magnificent song !!!
I´ve never heard this song before - pretty good ;)
In the Japanese version of the album, this song was included as a bonus track, along with Fault Line and Blue. Sadly we only get two out of the three bonus tracks in the US. :(

Another great present from Mr. Blue Sky. Brilliant!!!
thanks so much for posting
Sublime!
extraordinary song
seems like lonesome lullaby
I love this.....Reminds me of early ELO!
Malgré les années passées, toujours agréable à écouter !! 💗
Le meilleur! Jeff Lynne!
Jeff is a Genius
+Gerd Reuter conserva ese sonido clasico ..el verdadero rock ..jeff rules!
Oh wow.
Beautiful.
Absolutely love it. Brilliant.
Thank you for posting this!

Brilliant!
Me encanta todas las de esta banda. 😍
WHY THE HELL WASN'T THIS ON THE ALBUM?!?
It's no mistake ! GREAT SONG !!!
The helicopter is brilliant - lost & never found

This song rocks. Blues based verses , reminds me of Led Zepplin, then chorus right out of Zoom. Cool song.
I agree with you
huh?
Сколько чистоты, высоты, сокровенности и нежности в этой песне, голос бесподобен, обожаю Джеффа Линна!!! ❤❤❤
LOVE LYNN...
Best of this album
Brillante.
Como siempre........... destellante.

" On My Mind" chorus sounds like "Lonesome Lullaby" from "Zoom."
Так точно ☝️🧐
Love it.
Why is this only in the Japanese version? I think this is one of the better tracks on the album.
+grondylion1 Perhaps because the chorus does sound a bit too much like 'Lonesome lullaby' from Zoom...?
+Jan-Willem van Aalst I guess I'm not the only one who thought that when I heard it ;) Pity he didn't write a new chorus and slot it in there because the other parts are great (as usual). Why was this left off the standard edition of the album???
This is my favorite new Jeff Lynne song
+Cindy NL Same here!!!
GENIAL !!!
sounds a bit like lonesome lullaby but i love it
Qué delicia para mis oídos!!!
I haven’t heard this song before. I combed through all the new songs.
Unfortunately because it was only on the Japan release which sucks
The Beatles are alive and well!
The chorus sounds awfully similar to “Lonesome Lullaby’s” chorus.
Aron Janzen agreed, and think this might have been reason it was skipped
Lonesome lullaby 2 but I ain't complaining
Thank you, I was just wondering which song it reminded me of. I have to say I like Lonesome Lullaby better. This sounds, well, frankly not very good. A mess really.
The chorus is very similar to the song "Lonesome Lullaby" on the "Zoom" album. Might be the reason this was relegated to being "just" a bonus track.
