The forecast called for "calm winds" on the NW side of the Big Island, but minutes after getting to the grounds, a persistent offshore wind formed with gusts well over 30 mph. That's when the mahimahi started hammering flying fish on the surface though, so we stayed pretty close to the harbor and stuck it out long enough to get a few in the bag.

Loving the underwater footage. Still amazes me how you can literally watch the life leave a mahi mahi. Another great video!

That outing really paid off for you and your friends. Really rolling the dice 🎲 with those weather conditions. Making memories!

Yeah the weather at this spot flips without warning so we probably should have just headed in as soon as the wind came up.

Oh yeah! Was a wild day haha. Still not as bad as windward side but scarier in a way because the wind blows you out to sea...

I was just at lsd today practicing my paddling so I can some day trust myself to go out to the deep outside Kawaihae. I love watching these vids

Nice! What kind of kayak you paddling? Kawaihae is a great spot as long as the wind is down but it can flip easy so gotta be careful!

You are a lot braver fishing in white caps. Man, I just knew a yak flip over was due, but you made it thru. Tough video.

Ideally I definitely try to avoid these conditions but the weather at this spot is famous for being unpredictable!

Yeah mainly the wind blowing offshore! Can be hard to paddle back to land against that so gotta really watch it. The mahis are the best battered fried fish for sure!

@AffordableWahoo .. I hate peddling against the wind lol .. we double battered (flower..egg..panko) and fried some up a couple weeks ago and it was delicious

Thanks a great video. You are the only Kayaker I've seen with outriggers, is it because Hawaii gets windy like this often? Does it slow you down?

Thanks for watching 🤙 It does often get choppy here in Hawaii so that's a major reason. For me it mainly helps when I need to move a heavy fish from my deck to the fish bag. Shifting heavy weight around while rocking from swells can get sketchy. I lose maybe a quarter MPH off top speed with them on.

What's the name of that harpoon thing that you stick the fish with and where can I buy it?

    • @AffordableWahoo

Its called a "kage" spear gaff. We all make our own. The handle is a wooden dowel with a hole drilled in it and the spearpoint is a 3/8 inch stainless steel threaded rod that's epoxied into the hole. I think I saw one on Amazon too though not sure how good it is.
