It's been a whirlwind

- 2023 was a wild year. And I think, with the end of the year upon us, it's a fine time to look back on what was accomplished, look forward to what my creative goals are in 2024, and--most importantly--thank you all for your constant support. I wouldn't be able to put this much time and effort into these videos if you weren't watching and commenting each week. And I'm deeply grateful for that. Here's to an excellent 2024!

I will never forget the first time we met in person and talked in that bathroom in that one weird pizza joint (that sucked) outside of Festool USA HQ. True story. It was the worst.
It is weird that the foundation of our friendship is a conversation where we were trying not to make eye contact with one another 😂
Do we need to hear about your bathroom adventures? :)
Shorts don’t count but still, a video from you on the application of curves to “boxes” would be interesting.
Idea for 2024... let's make an outdoor patio set that fosters socializing and comfort. We can spread that out over the year, allowing time for some of us hobbyists to keep up.
You're a gifted communicator and teacher...uh... professor. Yeah, that's the description!
Happy New Year.
POST that Short!!! Meet all your goals. You had several long form videos that were great.😊 I would be interested in a short series, 3 or 4 videos where you tackle something, technique wise, that has always scared you, or at least makes you uncomfortable Could be something that has inlaid design, something that requires steam bending, intricate veneers, etc. What makes you uncomfortable in master woodworking techniques?
Best woodworking channel on UA-cam my friend. Love the fact that you keep making build videos and haven’t become a “best 5 tools you have to buy” guy. Thanks for all the teaching
Short absolutely counts, but don’t make a habit of it. We love to hear your “rambling”
haha noted!
Do a talkie about Labor of Love versus getting paid on a commission.
I just had to walk away from my shop just a few days ago. Things just weren't working out. It's the first time I felt mentally defeated in my woodworking. Luckily, I follow you and recently watched a video where you discussed doing something just for fun and not take it too seriously. It honestly helped turn me around and get back into my shop with a different outlook. Thank you 🙌
Short doesn’t count, don’t cheat yourself. Be proud of your 51 💪 it’s 51 more than most of us commenting in here
video idea: a very rustic looking shelf with wood shelf brackets..... cabin/out in the woods style
I would like to see another “shop sounds” video or three…just letting your artistry and craftsmanship speak for you visually versus verbally.
Make a quick 5min video sampling and talking about your favourite whiskies brandies for no52
Keep up the great content
How about a short vid on what things you are choosing between. It would help us understand what floats your boat, what your voice sounds like.
You asked for suggestions for builds for your channel so here is mine. I have always been fascinated with texture as a part of a woodworking build, and I would love to see you build something with some type of surface texturing, whether it be carving or other techniques. I also think that a mixed material approach such as incorporating stone or patina
16:51 metal Into a piece would be very interesting.
Thanks for the idea!
I've been led to believe that the youtube algorithm actually rewards shorts over longer form content, so posting the 52nd video as a short probably counts for 5 videos. I love your channel and I'm really looking forward to some chair design. I sometimes think designing chairs that are both comfortable and beautiful is some kind of alchemy that brings together the artist and the scientist in a way that no other build does.
So I am watching and listening to this video while my wife and a neighbor are discussing our daughter's wedding...'ya know where my priorities are. At 69, I would love to take a class from you!!
Make the chair!Early on I figured that if I could make a set of chairs, I would build a fairly complete set of skills for becoming a better woodworker. 4 side chairs, 2 arm chairs, a couple of custom chairs of my own design and a myriad of stools later and about 25 years of experience, chairs are still challenging, but oh so rewarding when they sit right!
I'd love to see some shop organization and tool storage ideas.
I would love a video 'series' on how to use and look after hand tools / traditional techniques. Or at least make things that don't require the Festool Domino!!! I appreciate your inspiration, especially with things like 'It's okay to make mistakes' and 'You don't need every tool out there' - the series at your friend's house making the bathroom cabinet and shelve using basic power tools was great.
A short that isn't just a clip from another video definitely counts. Communicating a point in 1 minute is a different skill than making a 20 min long form.
Agreed. Different skill set entirely. And fair point!
Agreed. I second this. (Third it?)
Third
Jep. A short counts.
Completely concur. For example, a Short that is 60 seconds of a camera moving around your shop doesn't count. Even with a music score. No good. However, the same footage spliced together with a narrative of what we are seeing and why it the thing exists in your shop definitely counts.
I would love to see more mixing of sculpture and furniture (like the wavy front face carvings you’ve done in the past)!
I’m an engineer and have a strong grasp on the mechanics of woodworking. What I really enjoy from your videos is the artistic and creative growth (something that is difficult for someone who made a career from facts and figures). Keep pushing us all to find the beauty and elegance in what we create… Looking forward to a great 2024. Also, I like that you set obtainable goals for the new year and not just the same old resolutions!
Make your short. I'm excited to see you explain your process of conceptualizing, designing, and building a chair. Chairs scare me. I know I'm not the only one because the ratio of dining room table videos to dining room chair videos on UA-cam proves my point.
Scramble for content, reaching a goal. Do the short!
Make the short, count it as 52, count it as a win!! This is a great channel.
Thank you!
I have been involved in woodwoork for 50 yrs and never been realy happy with the things i have made there is always something i didnt like where i made a mistake etc. 99 % of people were happy and did not see the mistakes and liked the carpet more than the furniture great vid i like what you have to say..
Would love to see a series on the design and construction of a chair. For that matter, would love to see multiple compact (two or three episodes) series that deal with design and construction. For instance, I think you did one about a violin presentation case that I found interesting and quite useful.
Best of luck in the new year!
Great suggestion. Will definitely put that on the potential list.
Erik.....my furniture making philosopher.... why you don't have hundreds of thousands of subs and views by now is beyond me. In this new gold rush, new hollywood era of UA-cam, everyone and his or her brother is quitting their day job to make woodworking videos of every imaginable subject ,......don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching many of those guys, but you are a breath of fresh, fresh air. My fear is I think I just heard you say, I'm quitting my day job as a furniture maker to become another woodworking UA-camr. Not exactly what you said and I realize it must be difficult to come up with new content every week, but please keep being you and certainly follow your heart wherever that takes you. Don't get too blinded by the bright lights of fame and fortune. The 48 seconds of # 52 was perfect ...Cheers
Ooh. Excited that you may be coming to England. You can teach us some woodworking, and we can teach you the proper use of the word "bloody" 😉
I bloody well know that I use it wrong ok?! 😂😂
G'waan, chuck up a short just for the 💩s and giggles😁 Oh, and I like you. May there be many things made in the New Year.
Thank you for saying what I needed to hear again, it's fine to make mistakes. We're human and it's also how we learn best.
Absolutely!
This was one of my favorite You Tube finds in 2023. I am a subscriber and will continue to follow you. Thanks for your efforts. What I would like to see:
1) More specific tips and tricks.
2) Scale down the general talk. Don't get rid of it, just scale it down in favor of woodworking discussion
3) Keep going. Just don't stop.
4) Make the damn 2 minute video. You will feel better about yourself if you achieve that goal.
Grateful for what you do. Thanks!
If you have a short that can provide value, then go for it, but don't water down your year with a pointless short. I watch your videos because you inspire me and every single one is worth every minute of my time.
You have had an incredible year and have a great reason to have missed #52.
Thanks so much, Joe. I appreciate that.
Project videos are good. Small projects, large projects: makes no difference. And more hand tool work. If you can do it with a hand tool you can do it on a table saw/jointer/bandsaw/etc.
I’d like to see you build a floor to ceiling, built in, entertainment center. It would also be really cool if you taught in the Chicago area sometime.
A chair. Cool. Big fan here of authentic MCM furniture and it seems back then they put a lot of design time first into making sure the chair was comfortable with proper ratios, proportions, height etc and still came up with elegant solutions. Not an easy thing but the mark of dedication to the art that is more than visual.
Erik, thank you for making my world a better place each week. I look forward to more in 2024. GOD BLESS YOU.
P.S. Would love for you to do a video making something with construction grade lumber from a big box store.
To quote an old song "Everything counts in large amounts"
It's your goal. If making the short will make you feel that you accomplished the goal, make the short. If you will not feel that you accomplished your goal even if you make the short, don't waste your energy and time.
As far as videos go next year, I would love to see you do some videos on design aesthetics and the thought behind what makes something aesthetically pleasing.
Three things:
(1) Yes - make the short and get the 52nd video out. You set the goal, don’t quit when you’re so close.
(2) Make a video explaining how and why you choose specific wood and specific grain for any particular project.
(3) Thanks for all your help this year - have a happy new year and a successful 2024.
Thank you and I like the suggestion. Will put that on the list.
I’ve been interested in working with wood for a long time and you have convinced me I need to just do it.
One year I realized I was going to camp 60 nights in a year. I got to end of December and I was one day short, so I slept in the backyard with my daughter and wife. I count it. A short counts.
51 vs 51.5 lol. Goals are about progress and at this point it’s a win.
Love to see some design content. Different styles, finding your style, building outside your style for no other reason than growth. Etc.
Watched from the hot tub which was very comfortable.
Yes to the short video
And love that cup. Reminds me of my college roommate
Would love to see a chair build…..series. Enjoy your style.
Go get your 52. One good minute of your work is better than 20 minutes of sawdust dancing in the air to Tchaikovsky. Although I like that too.
I've really enjoyed your contribution to my woodworking journey in 2023. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
In 2024, I'd love some videos on how to use form to enhance function (how to transform plain objects into things of beauty through the design process).
I enjoy the storytelling. I will correct you on the phrase "making objects", you make beautiful objects,, and adding to the beauty of this world is a great thing.
Yes. A short is still a few minutes of your time to communicate something. So it most definitely counts!
Go with a Sam Maloof inspired chair! But put your spin on it. I’d want the plans for that project.
I'd love to see a video about "I know roughly what I want to build, now how do I determine the best way to cut those pieces out of wood?" Or basically "what wood do I need to build this thing?" I feel like I'm constantly getting just not quite enough wood for projects and then I have to go back to get more or I scale down the project slightly.
I smiled when you mentioned Drew, as I was just thinking about the similarities in your approach to content. Whether by accident or design, you’re both fairly similar over all. Different skill levels, no doubt. But the good vibe is there with you both.
That’s what instantly won me over with both of you. Without knowing you or what you were about, from the very first video I watched from either of you… it was like a fun chat with a old buddy. That’s VERY rare in the woodworking community, be it online or out in the world.
In terms of video ideas Four Eyes did this thing for a minute where they helped some woodworkers with their designs. Taking the ideas to the next level. Maybe some videos where users submitted projects and you give a take on how you would make it better.
I watch a lot of these videos and find yours to be one of the best most digestible and relatable channels on here. Thank you the wealth of knowledge you ease with which you give it. Looking forward to 2024 and growing my knowledge with you Rex, JKM, Wright and all the rest of my UA-cam professors. Keep up the amazing work! And thanks again for all the time you put into these. P.S. definitely make that short and hit your goal. It definitely counts.
Thank you so much!
Finally Patreon! I’ve been wanting to support you in some small way. Small, tiny, itsybitsy.
It is, by no means, a small way. I appreciate any support you are able and willing to provide. Thank you so much 🙂
You had me at "O.G."
😎👊
Definitely do the chair
A video on right sizing wood to reduce warping or techniques on how to accommodate wood warping/movement and the reduce impact on final piece.
There is an impact for sure, and it's huge. Seeing other people managing to make a living from woodworking or anything that can come from it, gave me the courage to follow the way I want to walk in life. Not to mention the infinite gratefulness to the platform but specially to all the creators that thought to me and to other millions of people the skills needed.
Love your thinking, design, work processes and sense of humor. Your questions about purpose reminded me of the book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Takeaway... the real motorcycle you're working on is yourself..." Highly recommend the book in case you haven't read it.
I'd vote for an England trip!
congrats on hitting your goals. Also, I would love to see a dog bed build. something really nice and that could be a nice piece of furniture in the room
Finding your voice... im struggling with that right now. Finding patience... frustrating situations in the shop? I have to walk away. Otherwise bad things ALWAYS happen. Loved the short by the way, it absolutely counted. The transition from the end back to the beginning was genius!
thank you EN . i like what you put out . i like watching with explanations on the builds . old retired who put a small work shop in the garage . when health allows i get to play in it
I hope 2024 brings you plenty of time and health to go make a thing, my friend.
More power carving ;)
dude - i like your style - your projects- and i learn things- just be you
Would love to see your take on a Gerstner-inspired machinist tool chest that sits on a stand of some sort for all your layout and marking tools. You know, dovetail case construction, through mortises for the dividers, lots of drawers, etc. Would enjoy your ideas… great channel!
Being a hobby chair maker myself, I got very excited about you making a chair. I would love to see your work.
Thank you for all your effort this past year.
It would be great if the England Project would materialize, and if that would turn out to be a box making course I would seriously consider to hop over from the Continent. I love making boxes (not that I am in any way good at it), but any inquiry for some sort of a course gets you a derisive smile, at best.
enjoy your content immensely. Technique "how-to" is always welcome. Perspective, approach, things to contemplate, etc. are always welcome, but how to execute a technique is essentially why I subscribe to various woodworking channels. For me, more technique equates to more views...
Enjoyed your show. I hoped you had a blessed Christmas. wishing you all the best for 2024. Cheers. from Western Australia..
Make the short. Hit your goal.
Would really enjoy a video on wood selection, the Cali video series didn’t really scratch that itch. Keep driving towards your goals. 100k subs is within reach!
A short that’s new content totally counts!
Congratulations on the year's progess. 52nd video idea: Drink recommendations from everything that goes into the mug.
I would love to see some projects to help progress. As a semi-beginner a video or series about like 3 small projects or something to make with advancing difficulty to help mastering things. Some of the stuff that is the most difficult are not covered in content. Stuff like dealing with dried glue in the inside corner of a box. It would be helpful for those of us earlier on our journey. Love your content. Thank you for doing what you do.
A short of new content or bit of knowledge counts for sure. What is some of the best advice you got early in your woodworking career that made an impact?
In 2024 how about a wittworks build challenge? This could become a multi-video series which could help with the move into long-form videos as well. Maybe one with power tools and another challenge with hand tools only. All wood species and design fair game 🤔
Looking forward to joining you in 2024!
Of course a short counts. Go for it :)
😎👊
You have to make that 52nd Video! Just Recap the Year with snippets and post it New Years Eve!
I appreciate all the videos you put out, and I don't think you give yourself enough credit for the quality of those videos. Way better than "OK". Would love to see more videos that include hand tools. I enjoy your approach and the way you integrate them.
Yes, make the short - it will count!!!
Great to hear Marc Adams School of Woodworking mentioned, among the places you will (or might) teach in the coming year. Being and alum and helper there is a great joy...a home (not too far away) from home.
Too late 2106 hrs 31 Dec 2023; but go for 52. Given the content and production value of your videos, YES it would count.
I’d love to see more build videos. I’m pretty busy with life right now so a lot of my design/project ideas come from UA-cam. I like your designs and thought processes. They’re unique and different from most other UA-cam woodworkers. I store all that info in the deep recesses of my brain to pull ideas and inspiration from later. Wish I had found your channel sooner. Keep up the good work!
The impact you’re having on the world is not the fact that you make things from dead wood, it’s the fact that you’re a master craftsman. It’s incredibly important because master craftsmen in any discipline demonstrate the extent of human ability. They inspire and motivate others to do better. Again, the subject is not important it’s the mastering that’s the value. In my opinion of course lol
WOW that was long... but necessary. Its good to have a plan, a direction. What works for me is short time goals. I mean, next week or at the end of the month ! Anyway,, thanks for all your time and effort, see ya around 1 in 7.
A video of how you shop and select wood for your projects. Building on your attempt previously.
How about a short on your clamp rack on the wall. Simple but useful. Enjoy your videos.
Thanks for your work and videos this year. Yeah, a chair, I’d love that video!
I'm OK with the short, but you have to change your prop to an espresso... Thanks for your work Eric and all the best for the New Year!
Make the short, celebrate the win. But don't listen to any of us … those were your goals and you're the ultimate judge. Did super secret project involve video? If so, that should definitely count even if we won't know what it is yet.
Making a small tool cabinet/chest build. It would make a good 2 or 3 part video. I inherited a set of tool chests from my great grandfather and want to make my own.
Make a short with shots of all your completed projects this year. We might have missed something cool during the year.
For your vids for 2024, IMHO I really think the assortment which you bring keeps things on your channel fresh. I guess if there was something I wouldn't mind seeing a little more of, it would be projects but I really like the different aspects of the crazy which you bring to your channel.
Thanks Eric. Appreciate all the insight. I’d love to see some videos with Larissa and Sawdust Woman. I definitely like the technical sides of things but happy to watch anything. Maybe some videos on different wood species and how they work and what they are good for. Combining different wood species would be cool too. Take care!
Big fan of the channel - love the content and the delivery. Anything hand tool technique related in 2024 will be appreciated! We met at the restoration tent last Oct at Maker Camp which got me started on my hand tool journey!
I've always heard that if you hit 100% of your goals, your goals aren't aggressive enough ;)
I would love to see a video on your design process. From brainstorming/inspiration to modelling to creation.
I think the initial idea creation is often left out as makers display their processes.
I'd love to see you customize and build out your closet
Thanks for all the great content.
I would like to see a mix of large projects, along with smaller projects (like the picture frames) that are still creative, but a little less intensive and intimidating
2024- The year of the Curtis 💪
Stay strong and get your wood on!!
