I think you are a good person for having these concerns as you are considerate of people's feelings. You are blessed with success to have the capacity to buy a 2 tone rolex. I do not care about what strangers think of me wearing a gold rolex but I do care a ton of how my siblings and my clients think of me wearing a gold rolex when I'm the only person who have spent huge money on luxury items. But we are watch collectors. There are other interesting watches we can put on for family gatherings or meeting clients.

Enjoy the bloody watch and don’t give a flying continental on what anyone thinks. It’s yours to enjoy and if others can’t enjoy in your success, then that’s their problem, not yours! Lovely piece, health to wearing it 😎

A quick thought on feeling uncomfortable wearing a nice watch around family. I used to feel that way and after some self assessment, I realized that the issue wasn't being around my fam, it was actually how I felt about my watches or more particularly what I thought about them and why I wore them. Once I adjusted my brain to look at ALL watches for what they really are (simply a bit of fun made to be used, worn well, beat up and passed on) I was able to stop feeling so self conscious about it. Thing is, fam don't care about that watch unless one brings it up to them. If one does point out their watch to fam, then one needs to reconsider why they bought it in the first place. I pointed one of my watches out to my Dad once......I'll never do that again.

Funnily enough, a datejust in 36mm is the only Rolex I will consider buying. I know exactly where you're coming from with your concerns. Rolex watches do come with baggage and there are objectively better watches that attract far less jealousy and judgement. But you know what? Your Dad's probably proud that you are able to afford the good things in life. I know I will be if my kids grow up to buy/own Rolexes.

I agree. Also the domed bezel might be safer if you want to stay under the radar. Here is my favorite setup. Rolex OP, Datejust or Explorer all in 36mm with domed bezel on leather strap. By taking the bracelet off you already reducing the value by $2000. Try to stay away from two tone watches, especially with fluted bezel. Go full stainless steel. Forget about the gold. Rolex is Rolex.

I was completely blown away by your honesty in this video. I too have had every single thought and feeling about wearing my Rolex. As you said so well, there’s something about it that gives you a sense of satisfaction when you put it on, but yet there is a piece of me that wonders what others will think. Then again, I’ve come to learn that most people really have no clue what you’re wearing, nor do they care. Rarely does anyone take notice. So, buy and wear what YOU like. Great video and I’m looking forward to more content in the new year. Wear that beautiful DateJust often, and in good health. Happy New Year!

Brilliant video mate - I LOVE how honest you are!!! Never change that... I don't own a Rolex but have recently obsessed about getting one (for me an old explorer 2 polar or black) BUT you have just reminded me of my old concerns about the brand i.e. a bit flashy, unwanted attention seeker and probably not wanting to wear it in numerous environments for security fear and for the risk of giving the wrong impression. Above all though i LOVED your comment "after a few months you realise it's just another watch, no more special than an omega etc." That comment has just saved me thousands of pounds bro - huge thanks!!! Of course they notice. everyone will notice. most people will think it's really really expensive. like $4,000. And if you tell them how much it really is, their jaws will drop. And people that have known you before you had it will probably think, why does he need a watch like that? And the people that dont really know you will think you are the man. They will think you are wildly successful and loaded. And they'd usually be right.
It all come with the territory of having a watch like that. You take the good with the bad

Also, when you have a watch like that, you have made it. The only thing that might hint that you haven't fully made it is when you have a watch like that and you are too scared to wear it. This shows that you haven't spent enough time and money cultivating your surroundings with people and places that make it safe to wear the watch. If you're in Monaco and you go from cocktail party to casino and back to hotel, you feel very safe and you have indeed made it. If you go to some worn down pub full of people ready to glass you because you have a nice watch or if you are like me and hang out at a karaoke bar in manila with dead rats on the street and wear a watch which is the equivalent to 5 years salary of the people in your karaoke group, you probably are a bit short of having truly made it. @@watchandrew

Great video, young fella. I feel the same way about Rolex. I don't own one; but considered buying one for several years. That stopped in 2020 when prices soared into the stratosphere and I realized I didn't want one THAT badly. There is a bit of negative stigma to Rolex--particularly the blingey ones. In the end, I gave up my search and am glad that I did. As cool as they are, they are simply too hard and to expensive to get. And now, here in California, more and more people are getting robbed while wearing them. Sad.

Although I don’t have a Rolex I also have some fairly expensive watches and do think twice about wearing them in certain places. I.e. if going somewhere a bit rough, that’s just common sense to me!!!
But with regards to everything else, you buy a watch (Rolex’s as well) because you like them, in the same way you might buy an expensive shirt, suit or shoes etc, as opposed to cheaper versions.
If you’ve worked hard and earned it I don’t think you should ever feel guilty or awkward for wearing it.👍

I get what you're saying on this one. I think with the Datejust specifically there's the rose gold two tone which is a bit more muted if that's your thing, but I agree. Sometimes you want something that's nice that you know is nice but doesn't draw a ton of attention to itself.... there's the Explorer for that lol. Great vid.

I can relate with some points you made here. Used to own an all gold yacht-master which was my absolute pride and joy but I didn’t like wearing it around customers because it was so eye catching. Also didn’t want to wear it around my grandparents because they are so frugal with their finances. My parents bought the watch off me so I’m very happy they will get to enjoy it. I still have my black sub (on a black leather strap) and it’s such a sleeper watch that I can wear it anywhere and not feel awkward. I am tempted to let it go though and get a two tone date just. I miss the gold so much.

Great video. I’m looking to buy my 1st Rolex and a lot of your negatives are things I think about also! Finding a Rolex that feels special enough to you that warrants the price BUT also you’re comfortable enough to wear daily in everyday situations is the KEY! Ur watch is gorgeous! But part of why I don’t think I would buy a gold watch or even a two-tone watch are for those things you mentioned. It’s not casual enough to occasionally go “under the radar”, or to wear on relaxed days when you don’t want to appear as if you’re trying too hard! Ugh. Such a hard choice but you may enjoy down grading to something all steel that’s beautiful and great, but doesnt draw unwanted attention or seem “out of place” with jeans and a tshirt. Not to put words in ur mouth! Phew😅. But that’s my thought process. I think a white dial OP or even a submariner or smooth bezel DateJust are the best at low key elegance. (Certain Explorers also). Thoughts?

Good honest video, mate. I favour the less flashy (non two-tone) & non-cyclops Rolex for the reasons you outline. As example the Explorer. It’s a Rolex but not obviously so. Perfect balance for me. But anyway, don’t worry about it too much is my advice. Vast majority of peeps don’t even know you’ve got a watch on. You’ve worked hard and love it so wear it! And in the grand scheme it’s a DJ not a Daytona or AP (no disrespect meant btw) I’d say most concerns/perceptions are in your head, not in those of the others you mention. Just don’t pro-actively tell people what watch you have & crack on 👍🏻

I bought a Rolex op 36mm back in 2017, at first I thought and felt like it was the best watch ever. After about 6 months the novelty wore off and it just felt like a normal watch, I sold it after a year. Where I live you see lots of people wearing Rolex's, for me it's just another watch. I enjoy watches from other brands now and don't really look at Rolex anymore, I will probably buy a 36mm datejust in the future but for now I prefer my iwc mark 18 , it's understated and only watch people know what it is.

I get the self conscious feeling around friends and at work. I don’t talk about watches and try to be discrete but it can be awkward wearing such luxurious items that most people would not understand and surely would be outraged if they knew how much they cost. I think that is the demonstration of a true enthusiast, to be able to have as much pleasure wearing it around the house as out and about. What I learned is that most people don’t even notice watches, and it is your own money to spend. They could have other hobbies as expensive, traveling for example.

Over the past few months I started thinking seriously about buying a Datejust, and I have many of the same concerns: family, work, strangers/going out.
I’ve always wanted an all-silver version with a jubilee bracelet, but there’s a huge difference between a 36 with a smooth bezel, and a 41 with a fluted bezel. The former has been real contender for me because I see it as reserved and tasteful. I also like that it’s small and light enough for me to forget I’m wearing it throughout the day. The latter has its own appeal because it’s a more contemporary expression of a classic design, not a shrinking violet. There’s a sexy confidence to the boldness of the design.

Those are some honest reflections Andrew. I think that nagging feeling is a good sign. The sign of a social conscience.
I’ve owned my 114060 for 7 years (bought new with discount, for less than the price of an average omega these days). I’m only just starting to feel comfortable wearing it to work. I think it conflicts with my own values more than anything. I’m from a normal background and I work in the public sector, helping people, some of whom are on the bones of their arse. People are relying on food banks and I’m sitting there with what could be, to them, the best part of a year’s salary on my wrist with more in reserve in the watch box back home. Cringe. My wife doesn’t get it. She works in the private sector where status symbols are commonplace.
What has been interesting has been wearing an even more expensive, but far less recognisable watch for several months. Most people have never heard of Blancpain. “I’m sure he said it was something beginning with ‘B’…”) In that time, only one person commented, saying it was “stunning” (the way the bezel caught the light). Most people don’t notice, or care. That realisation has helped me be more confident.
Many thanks for relatable, honest content 👏🏻

Totally agree with you and you know what, you obviously work hard, have a passion for watches, so why not treat yourself! But I echo your feelings - I think the world is changing; I bought my first Pepsi GMT in the mid-90's, and to be honest no one even looked looked at it. I kept it 5 years (sold it a doubled my investment) and traded it in for a Submariner which I kept for 15 years. I wore it every day (in London, Afghanistan and other exotic places) and it became at the time a sort of statement in the UK military as the go-to watch when I was serving. Time moved on and I sold it (again doubling my money) and bought a paramotor. The best thing I ever did - had so much fun and never regretted it at the time. However, scroll forward to today and I miss that watch - the journey I had with it and now to buy back in would cost £10,000+ for an 'ordinary' no-date sub. Anyway, today I might not be as confident to wear it daily, which is a shame and as you say there is certainly a image with some of the more bling Rolex's. My grail would now be a 5513 Sub - maybe one day ;-). Keep up the great content and enjoy your watch hunting journey!

Mate I share your thoughts on general image of wearing a Rolex around others. I often don’t wear mine to work because I don’t like the thought of people thinking I’m paid too much 🤣 sounds silly saying it (or typing it) but that is how I feel sometimes. Even though 99.9% of the time nobody would pay attention to it, or even know it’s a Rolex. Watch magpies look at everyone’s wrist but the general public don’t know.
I also don’t know why I think like this - it’s a bit materialistic - I somehow think my life will be better when I have a particular watch which I lust after - which has never been true 🤣 although I do love my watches and they give me some joy!

It would feel like living a lie "saving up" for one, and then babying it. But I'm in no position to tell people what to do, so if that's what makes people happy, then go for it.

I suggest wearing a stainless steel DJ 36 or OP 36 black or white dial when meeting clients. It’s like saying I’m doing good for myself, I like to look good, but I’m not flashy or trying to get everyone’s attention. 😉

Yeah, I think this watch is really great looking! I wear mostly sports from Rolex but I Definitely agree it's pretty beautiful and I'd get on wearing it myself. Not sure why you're walking out late at night or in rough areas anyway, but don't do that then. I go to bed at 10:00. Also you look like a tough guy, I wouldn't mess w/ you. I'm sure most wouldn't TBH.
Your dad and family members are proud of you and your accomplishments and happy you are able to reward yourself. Don't worry about that, omg. They know the real you, and I'm sure they don't think you are acting differently because I'm sure you not.
Show off at work, man! Let them know you kill it! They'll appreciate your manners, care, and skill. They're not looking at your wrist.
I also do a full circle w/ Rolex. There are other watches from other watch brands that catch my eye so I buy them, I wear them, and I fall out of love with them. I always come back to the staple Rolex. Honestly, nothing beats it. Sure, there are better watches spec wise on paper from a value prop POV but you'll always come back to Rolex. People love to hate Rolex for this specific reason.
Wear that watch man, it looks killer on you! And delete this video! Don't think about this BS again. Not to be rude, this is the same goddam story we've all heard a million times. Wear the watch dude.

I've got a two tone black bay. I've just insured them on my house insurance for home and away. It cost me about £80 extra for the year , just to give me some piece of mind. That was for 3 watches worth about 10k new. I'm quite happy to wear them anywhere really as I'm 18 stone and 6ft 1, but you just never know. Enjoy it m8

Interesting and honest video. I’m in sales and feel the same both at work and with my family (dad in particular who knows watches but could never afford high end). I sold Batman because of the hype, then sold YM 40 because in was not legible enough for my eye. Now have DJ 41 fluted bezel jubilee and find it a bit flashy. Wear my old but brilliant Omega Seamaster 300 from mid 2000s. BTW got Cartier tank solo for client meetings which stays under the radar 😉. Feel lucky and a bit guilty posting this given all that’s going on but hey we are all addicts on these platforms 😊

I was in the Rolex store a couple of years ago and the owner puts out a single watch. A Datejust 41 in white, Roman Numerals with the Jubilee bracelet and the gold bezel. I ask to try it on and it fits perfectly. I had seen it advertised on grey market sites for a few thousand over retail. It was the watch I lusted for. I was possessed. I had to have it. I handed over my credit card. I never wear it. It is just too flashy. Everyone notices it. I am uncomfortable being noticed. The watch sits in the safety deposit box. I am going to keep it. It scratched my Rolex itch.

Wear your lesser watches to work, you can and will rub many the wrong way, same goes for cars. 90% of people want to see others fail, family and friends included, sad but true. I like a standard DJ because of this and a Day Date for when I want to say fk you. The two tone is in a funny place for me personally. That said if you're to only have one it's not a bad pick, I would go for a blue dial two tone sub.

Another one that made me laugh out loud. When you listed the 3 areas where you felt uncomfortable wearing it… I thought SO only around the house then eh? Fortunately I don’t have this problem although I do consider before wearing my Omega in certain areas. That cost £1600 at the time ‘used’ oops ‘pre-owned’ and it’s insured for more, so really no worries. However I really don’t think I could cope with wearing anything truly expensive like yours, so I do get it mate. However, I now think about it in a totally different perspective. It’s a thing of beauty, an art piece, a symbol of perfection…I could go on.

A couple solutions I've found to the downside of flash (and also to scratches)- I had bracelet centerlinks and clasp brushed, and I put a smooth bezel on. Doing both of these toned down the flash to wear I'm more comfortable wearing in all situations. It's still a rolex and beautiful to look at yourself, but it's also toned down and looks like a normal watch to others. If you aren't comfortable modifying the bracelet like that, consider getting an Explorer, it has those two differences already., the fully brushed bracelet and the smooth bezel.
