Lafayette Coney for sure 😂 but to be honest Coney Island ain’t just a restaurant you gotta be from here to understand how important Coney Island is to us in Detroit.

It’s not a New York food thing. It’s called that because Greek immigrants who started in Coney Island NY started spreading out across the U.S., and there ended up being a huge population in the metro Detroit area. They called their restaurants Coney Island restaurants because it was the place they were originally the most familiar with. It has nothing to do with the food in actual Coney Island.

It's 2:00 a.m. and this dude is making my mouth water. I'm driving downtown when I get up and having a chili dog for breakfast!!!!
coney*
In 1917, Gust Keros, a Greek immigrant, opened American Coney Island on West Lafayette Street in downtown Detroit. A few years later, in 1924, he brought his brother William to Detroit to help. Keros's brother opened Lafayette Coney Island when space opened up next door.
At least he got the names right
Who tf get cheese on a coney?
Right ??? Dude forgot where he came from
He"s getting them Cincy style
After eating 1,000's of coney dogs, I concur that they absolutely do not have cheese on them unless, for some reason, you ask for it to be added.
Lafayette Coney for sure 😂 but to be honest Coney Island ain’t just a restaurant you gotta be from here to understand how important Coney Island is to us in Detroit.
Detroit Represent. I'm proud to be a lifelong metro Detroit native. DETROIT VS EVERYBODY!!
Born and raised in Detroit (46 yrs), and I am with Keegan on this one. American Coney Island is just the best no doubt. My order since I was a kid in the 80’s… 2 coneys with onions and American cheese and mustard (as ketchup does not belong on a Detroit coney dog), either an ice cold vernors or orange faygo depending on my mood and some chili cheese fries with onions and mustard. Such a great meal. Never disappoints lol 😊
People are sleeping on the Faygo!
I live there and the sauce he speaks of is made with cow hearts and other organs. lol! It's good thou
Why wouldn’t it? Organs are great
For real?
That’s more of flint’s style.
@@Gregory-sm9pf Yes, the people that came up with the recipe eat organs traditionally, and due to religious reasons are allowed to butcher goats and other livestock without a license, the flavor of their "chili" is very unique because of the liver chunks especially.
Lafayette all day
Man no. Nobody gets cheese on a coney. It's chili sauce mustard and onions that's it. He described a chili cheese dog
True that when he said cheese I cringed
With as many coney dogs as I've eaten, I can confirm that there is not cheese on them unless you add it on, but a coney dog is a natural casing hot dog, Detroit-style chili, mustard, and onions in a hot dog bun.
@@Justmeagain-ec3wz I read your name as 'just meagain ' as in just Meagan but with an abnormal spelling until I just now realized it says "just me again" lmao but anyways yes exactly. I can't stand when people call a coney dog "just a chili cheese dog" cause it's definitely NOT smh sure some weird ass mfs add sliced cheese to it but that's nasty as hell to me
As a Michigander, one food that I get surprised hearing about is "Detroit Style Deep Dish." Specifically the square pan with the sauce on top. I've never seen it on a menu personally, only online. It also looks distasteful to me. I keep remembering Jon Stewarts Chicago Deep Dish spotlight and think "yeah, not something I'm interested in eating."
He’s so real for that
Wow i have never heard of such exotic cuisine 😅
😂😂
All the signature Midwest food is like this. Best greasy spoon places in America, but they don't sound very exciting when described with words lol
@@vulixirus I'm from the Midwest, I guess I wouldn't refer to it as cuisine..... more comfort food in my book
A fkn hot dog!! Lmfao!!! You cant take this guy seriously.
@@keyoke69where you from?
I work in downtown Detroit and man it smells SOOO good every time I walk to my car after work. People making dinners all over the city and it smells amazing. It’s really a beautiful city - where I work is right by the water.
But mannnn, that Detroit Chili will run through you faster than the Olympic 100m
If your gut ain't used to the grease, it can certainly do some damage. Condolences.
Love it when people love their hometowns
Zero lies told...I hope he comes back to the city and put on a Detroit America got talent type show at the fox theater...kinda like the Apollo talent show...
Nobody, but nobody, puts cheese on a Coney.
The cheese goes on the chili fries. I prefer my chili fries w/o cheese, I ain't trying to weigh 400lbs!
I prefer a light cheese drizzle over mustard. not a mustard fan. but ill skip the cheese and mustard altogether and just take triple the finely chopped onion.
1, lafayette is better. 2, don't put cheese on a coney, that's sacrilege
Welp religion is fake so I'll take my cheese.
It’s called a Coney Dog because of Coney Island my guy 😂. It’s a New York food thing
Do you honestly think anybody doesn't know that? Have you ever traveled anywhere?
It’s not a New York food thing. It’s called that because Greek immigrants who started in Coney Island NY started spreading out across the U.S., and there ended up being a huge population in the metro Detroit area.
They called their restaurants Coney Island restaurants because it was the place they were originally the most familiar with. It has nothing to do with the food in actual Coney Island.
He's so right! 😂 We moved there from Colorado and immediately noticed how, um, heavy set so many were. But soon we discovered that Detroit has not only the best food, but you can get so much of it delivered to your door. (Before door dash) AND, it's such a melting pot so the amazing food is deep and wide culturally. It all made sense. 😂❤
I love going down town. The cities beautiful. Of course theres parts that are run down and you def don’t stop at the stop lights. But downtown is awesome
Wow, thats high level cooking for sure, another slice?! How can some cook be so genius?
Finally some quality content, now I want to go to Detroit
A lifelong NATIVE Detroiter (not suburbs) here, and we are 4 generations deep: Detroiters only go to LAFAYETTE. Real deal Holyfield.
Im in !!! Shout out from L.A. ..... to quote Eminem ... " Detroit What Detroit what !!!! "
Hes not lying.
I fly out there just for the food.
There n texas just for food
Lived there for 21 years.
He's so right.
You know what as someone who lives I Detroit this is the most perfect description of a cony dog.
Facts been living here since 1978
Right... like that is some Detroit only thing good job bud we been had that in wisconsin since 1812
I mean the food so good here. Plus Detroit style pizza. Coneys. Japanese, Indian, Polish, Greek, Mexican, etc. it’s a fun time all around in Detroit and the close by areas.
Outside of NYC and LA, Detroit has the best food scene!!!
We have the spices from the Middle East, comfort from the South, flavor from Mexico, and the soul of America.
Detroit has a huge Greek, Indian, Caribbean, Mexican, middle eastern, Asian and Jewish communities...tons of coneys tons of bbq spots its a real melting pot, we literally have everything to choose from
THANK YOU FOR THE SHOUT OUT DETROIT IS THE BEST CITY EVER...❤❤❤❤❤
straight fax i love this cityyyyyyy
I used to travel for work all over the US and can tell you we have some of the best food here, pizza, steak, BBQ, the best middle eastern, Italian, Greek. Hands down! And you forgot to tell him about Sanders Bumpy Cake!!!!!
“We have our own cuisine… get this… it’s called a chili dog!”
*completely revolutionary*
I visited Detroit for the first time this summer. I saw these two restaurants - I didn't know which one to go to, so I ended up not going to either lol. Soo good to know which one to try out
The coney place by Harpos is just as good! Love me some Detroit!
Amazing Middle Eastern food here too!!
I had no idea Keegan-Michael Key was from Detroit, and this video makes me even more proud to have been born here.
He didn't lie at all 😂 Those are two of the best
Im from windsor right across the river, but i come to detroit for the food. Theres been a renaissance (no pun intended) for food and just the downtown scene in general and im here for it
Just went there today. Was sooo good
Like a Pats and Kings! Love this!
I live in Michigan in a suburb right outside of the street. Im also a professional tattooer, so I've been blessed to travel a lot for my career.
1. He aint lying. The food here is insane. Hands down the best pizza Ive ever had. The deep dish is a thing of beauty. This city and being married made me gain 20lbs.
2. Its also the diverse neighborhoods. I live in Dearborn, one of the biggest arab population in the country. Middle eastern food here is top notch. Theres also a HUGE asian population. The hibachi? Ohhh my god.
The coneys are often owned by greek families. So a gyro made at 2am? Forget about it. Mana.
Soul food? I was born and raised in the south. Soul food here is just as good. Jamacian? We got it. Best jerk chicken ive had in my life, i ate here.
