Hokuto No Ken The Grandfather that began Supernatural Martial Arts themed ANime. This series doesn't get enough credit for the children it has set the blueprint for.
Fist of the North Star is my favorite manga/anime. The world of Fist of the North Star is a very complex and fleshed out one with unique and interesting characters. Thank you for your awesome work in showing it in such a great light!
Yeah, the series pretty damn good until that Gento arc(the one Falco came from), which was kinda just okay, like a decent fanfic. Then that Asura arc was like a godawful fanfic.
I've watched the entire HnK TV series through 2 or 3 times and it never gets old. They did a great job mixing numerous direct rips from other cultures and making it somehow so much their own. Probably the #1 fault of the series in terms of story is the ability of Hokuto Shinken to save the moment like trilithium or some form of cosmic radiation always saves the day in Star Trek. But, obviously, that's not a plot device unique to HnK. Overall though, I freakin' love this series, and it has one of the most badass English titles ever. Fist of the North Star. Damn.
After having read the manga for the third time this year, i've been meaning to do something along the lines of making either a series of essays or overly analytical posts about the franchise. I see I may have been beaten to the punch. This is an amazing set of retrospectives. There's a surprising amount of depth in the Fist of the North Star series. And to be perfectly honest, I think the tale it tells is as relevant as ever.
Thanks for the comments. You read them all THREE times? Damn, you must read a hell of a lot faster than me. My first trip through the world was slow and plodding because I read them in the original Japanese. And I agree with you that they are as relevant as ever. Thanks again
Akira Kamiya is a legend. Kenshiro and Ryo is like Ace Ventura and the Mask. They are played by the same actor. Jim Carrey played by Ace and Stanley Ipkiss/ The Mask too.
Man I gotta give it ya. I love this due culture similarity as I am Chinese. For a westerner to have this level of understanding, u have truly mastered the ancient art.
Much appreciated Roo. It did take a long time and a lot of digging but it was well worth it. One of these days though, I truly need to get serious about the study of Chinese history. Are you a fan of the Dao Deh Ching? It is one of the central books for me of philosophy.
After my second day playing fist of the North Star lost paradise, I wanted to see what the story was. So thank you for this video which based off of the length, I’m sure will go into detail about the story, characters, etc.
Definitely suggest watching the series or reading the manga if you can, also. There's a certain sense of wonder you get from watching it; it's incredibly over the top, but it has some really heart-wrenching stuff as well. Even the latter half of the manga and anime which has a timeskip is filled with some great stuff.
40:51 Ummm, Mr. Heart was actually voiced by Shōzō Iizuka, who's better known as the voice of Nappa in _Dragon Ball Z_ (though Takiguchi did actually voice Mr. Heart in the 1986 feature-length film adaptation).
This is a fantastic and well structured and scripted retrospective that helped me remember quite a few things I’d forgotten over the years. Will definitely be watching the other parts!

Souther is one of my favorite examples of the Sympathetic Monster kid of character. On the flip side, Louise from Familiar of Zero is someone who I wish had her head exploded by Kenshiro.
TBH, Lin and Kenshiro's "special bond" didn't feel like a special bond, it's basically the anime's way of reminding the viewers that Lin has a liking for Kenshiro
I'm totally subscribed and watching this whole retrospective I loved it! Could you do a video where you examine the Animation and Character Designs? I always felt like the attention to detail in Fist of the North Star was a lost art. Especially in the 1986 movie, even though the movie repeats so many events from the series it's still beautiful. Hope you don't hate that film lol!
Hey CloakandDagger77, thanks for the comments and I'm glad you appreciated it. I am still going to roll on with the series and finish it, but if you saw all my vlogs and such you might know it probably will take a long time. Hopefully the wait isn't such a drag but it is what it is. Looking forward to hearing what you think about the other parts. And yes, the attention to detail and general look of the characters would be a nice point to expound on in the last part (part 8).

very well done retrospective!! i'll say this. the concept of Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star) is cool. But the original series does NOT translate well for American audiences. I feel the 1986 compilation re-telling movie version is the better cooler version of the story. the tv series plays like a Rated R dragonball Z that at times is convoluted and unitentionally funny/goofy due to its absurdity. for example the convulted story of Ken and his brothers, In the Ken / Shin rematch episode. In the film version she plays the damsel in distress that men fight over. simple. I feel the best versions of Hokuto No Ken story are (The 1986 animated film) and live action version from the '90s starring Gary Daniels and the recent PS4 role playing fighting game known as 'Lost Paradise' - the original series is just too weird but i respect it as the original. but i tried to watch the original series just as a fan. and guess what i laughed and then i feel asleep from boredom. good video though. thanks for doing this.
@27:19 That scene with the non-violent villager is also more a commentary on the morality of Pacifism. Pacifism can only work if both opposing forces are committed to the ideal of pacifism. The immorality is in choosing non-violence in the face face of violence, and it’s inability to protect others from violent threats. Thus pacifism costs more lives than it saves. Pacifism is a willingness to sacrifice the life of the individual or group in the pursuit of upholding an ideal rather than actually doing the right thing and protect other and preventing injury or death.
