I personally leave more of the front tail feathers to give it more depth and volume. Also I would recommend investing in a replaceable blade hunting knife. I have the Havalon Forge and love it. I can completely clean an entire deer on one blade. And the replacement blades are cheap.

I always salt or borax mine for a few days and leave the center cartilage. How long did you salt your base ?
Both sides covered for a good week and then i put the hot glue on there to help seal it up good after it dries. Good luck!
