For me, Splatoon 3 has the best core gameplay concepts of any shooter I've ever played, but the maps ABSOLUTLEY BUTCHER it. The maps are either so bad or just okay that playing a match feels like a chore. There are good maps, but even then those are usually returning ones, which is super boring because I've played those a thousand times already in splat 1 and 2.
"The weapon balancing is horrible!" Yeah, because the maps are usually biased towards 2 weapon classes. I wonder if it has to do with that map designer they hired before the game released.
That and the netcode, which was already bad in Splatoon 2, and worse in Splatoon 3. Brella is unplayable, and will probably still not be playable even if it gets buffs because the netcode makes shields not function as shields. If you made the maps good... and the netcode work... You'd have a masterpiece of a game on your hands.
Broo it happened the same thing to me as well when I also got just 4 Grizzco Splatanas I was playing with my sister at the time and my god both us and the 2 randos did absolutely garbage because of it, I don't think I'll forgive the game for making us lose like that
I disagree with the notion that the simplified maps are better for Turf War. The lack of flank routes makes locking out the other team extremely brain-dead. It's not even fun to dominate the other team for all 3 minutes because they have no chance of getting back in. In past games, you can lock-out but it's much more satisfying when you are locking down multiple entry points. I ironically find it the most toxic mode in this game, due to how easy it is sometimes for teams to be curbstomped. Turf has always had that problem but it's even worse in 3. It should be the mode where casuals can paint around the giant map, not get thrown into the hallway grinder for 3 straight minutes
I deadass stopped playing the game because it wasn’t fun. And it’s the only time that I’ve ever done that for a game. I normally just grow out of love for it, with nothing against the game, but splat three feels like a waste of 60$
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been backed into a a corner by the opposite team because there’s literally nowhere to go. If there’s campers playing, you might as well just focus on just painting your spawn base and PRAY for anything outside of it.
The painful part is that there's a hidden mechanic in the series that tracks your playstyle, putting you into lobbies with people who play the same way. Focusing a lot on covering turf without engaging foes? The game will group you with people who don't bother splatting. Do you play aggressively? The game will group you with others like that. The issue is that 3's map design pretty much forces you to play aggressively, so you won't be grouped with those who just focus on covering turf. What a waste of a system.
Splatoon 1: some rough corners, but so much potential! Splatoon 2: corners are smoothed, some new great ideas, and it really shows the potential for something great! Splatoon 3: just realize your potential already!
@@watcherwhowatches6725i meant that the potential is done. its found. splatoon is literally just there. There is no need to reinvent it or keep seeking "peak", splatoon IS peak
3:36 to clarify, it's ONLY Splatoon 2 that has this "feature". It, along with splatoon 1 and pretty much every other online Nintendo game was using the same online infrastructure they had been using since the 3DS days, called NEX. Splatoon 3 is actually the very first in-house Nintendo game to use their new server system, named NPLN. It's why we got features like the new lobbies, this was something that was impossible to do back in Splatoon 2. But (and this is just speculation on my part), I think it's also why the online suddenly took this huge hit in functionality. Yeah the software is new and should be better on paper, but it was also untested and the developers had far less experience with it than the old system. As the first game to really stress test it (MHRise also used this system but player-to-player interaction there is less prominent), Splatoon 3 was basically like a guinea pig to really see how it worked, so it makes sense to me that we saw so many of those growing pains seep through.
Nintendo clearly knew what they were doing for being very biased towards the shooter class of weapons which has 3 pages while splatanas and stingers are new but don't even have 5 yet.
@@jumper4798 The maps are heavily charger biased (Brinewater) the less points they have to easily camp me out and snipe me from halfway across the stage the better
@@notimportant1659 Speaking from the perspective of an eliter user, some maps do have that like mincemeat. However devs have updated it to place the cars in the way forcing me to move to a spot where shooters can easily get me, not to mention sloshers or rollers flicking from just under the wall making it nearly impossible for me to reach them. With brinewater it's very easy for something like a shooter to swim up and pressure and I have nowhere to go so I either splat them or get splatted, with jumping back to spawn just leaving me open so not an option.
@@DeathByAnvil i mean i wish the nozzles were more viable. i played splat 2 months after the chaos order fest. the only weapon that was truly broken was the kpro and maybe squelch dualies. the rest of the weapons were fine
@@internetguy7319 No it was the best one out of the franchise. Most people assume it isn’t because they never got to play it. I’ve yet to see why it’s the “worst” one though
@@carzia_speed2235don’t let nostalgia blind you. I have played all 3 games and while Splatoon 1 was very unique with its overpowered specials and open maps, it had a LOT of downsides.
I've never had someone else point out how little the new maps FEEL like new locations: they feel like bad videogame maps, not even bad videogame _places._ I LOVE maps like Hagglefish, Umami, Undertow and Eeltail because they actually feel and look like real places, but the map layouts (Save for Hagglefish and Undertow in ranked, they are my babies and I WILL defend them) are just... Meh, they feel watered down. Why CAN'T you go around the glass walls in Undertow? Why CAN'T you climb the middle stacks in Hagglefish? Why is Umami missing its ENTIRE LOWER HALF (Look at its first teaser image, that little camper van thingy had to be sitting on something yeah?) It all feels very... Sad, like we could have gotten the best Splatoon game to date, update cycle be damned, yet what we got was "Splatoon 1, the sequel, the bad next-gen remaster where they made changes to good features" except we never got to SEE those good features from S3 (or, well, PLAY on them, we see them clear as crystal in the old trailers.)
I play Splatoon 3 every day and this video somehow informed me that you can change the shirt sizes, something they don't actually tell you in the game. Hawkeye indeed.
@@LimeLoaf I only play every single day because I am mentally ill. Ultimately, Splatoon is what it's always been-- Splatoon. There's new weapons, new gear, and so on, but nothing has fundamentally changed. So you're pretty much in for the same experience as before. If you're fine with that, then yeah, I'd play it. Realistically they are likely to recycle the Catalog items after the updates are over, and you will have missed nothing at all.
Hawkeye. Yeah you pretty much thoroughly put how my friends and I have been feeling into words. It feels wrong to to believe, but I can’t help but agree that the game feels like “filler.”
Honestly, Splatoon 2 felt more like filler until Octopass. Most people didn't play Splatoon 1, but I played that thing non-stop, that once I finally got to 2... it felt more of the same, but somehow less-so. As if things didn't quite have their own identity and was just bouncing off of 1. Those who didn't play Splatoon 1 as much (or at all), didn't get this off-feeling, and played the heck out of 2. Meanwhile, Splatoon 3 definitely feels like a big step towards its own identity. It's not perfect. It feels awkward, and in many ways incomplete (some features look, sound, and feel great, but are a hassle to interact with since there's little incentive to interact with them), but it does actually feel different from Splatoon 1 & 2. Towards the new identity Nintendo wants to give Splatoon. Not sure if the new identity will be anything better than Splatoon 1+2 when they finally achieve it (Splatoon 4 will be the real proving ground - Splatoon 3 is the testing ground for the new framework), but at least it's attempting something different. It's less "filler" and more "beta". It's the first time Splatoon's running completely off of Nintendo's new servers...... which just goes to show HOW MUCH Nintendo NEEDS to increase the size of their servers. Nintendo ain't like Sony and Microsoft, who has resources in other businesses that allows them massive server space - and it ain't like EA, who cheats money out of customers and employees to be able to afford massive server space - so they're going to have to dig hard out of their own pockets (which are deep, but not multi-industry deep) to make bigger and better servers... Which we most likely won't see until their next console release.
This is my favorite game. Period. Even with that, I agree with pretty much everything said by the community and anyone who feels like dropping it for such is completely valid. My main hope is that they're just going slower than expected for employee work-life balance, which we've heard good reports on from higher ups and employees. My guess is that we're gonna get a surprise third year of only kits and events just like splatoon 2's extra year for fests and the third kits, that way we can have all 3 finalfests every year of the game. I'm still on the fence about buying the next system because I'm still very upset with how nintendo handled joycon drift, so this will probably be my last entry for a good while, and with that I'm hoping they pull out all the stops here, or at the very least this ends up being the splatoon with the huge modding scene, like the mario kart wii or smash brawl of splatoon. Also, the maps don't work good for turf war either. Most of my friends who want to play more casually have dropped the game very quickly because the maps just make them feel walled out, especially with the little to no matchmaking (seriously, I have the top 3000 x rank badge, stop putting me up against "Player"s when I go into turf war) while the ones with more routes make turf war feel like anyone's game, which is a good thing for the mode meant just to get a hand of the mechanics and have fun. And if the goal was to force engagements, the ranked objectives already do that just fine.
Yeah, the way Nintendo handles things makes me not wanna buy their next console at all. If the maps stay bad, then lets hope the modding scene for 3 gets to the point that there’s custom servers and maps, kinda like CTGP in MKWII
iirc nintendo switch 2 leaks suggested at switch 2 controllers having hall effect analog sticks which eliminates drift pretty much. u can also just get controllers that use that tech NOW, i have 8bitdo ultimate for my switch and its amazing
Yes the maps suck so much ass for turf war. I actually like turf war and have since splatoon 1 and 2 and the tiny maps make it so boring in 3. It feels like it’s constant fighting with no where to go build up special or paint the map, which sounds exciting on paper but in practice makes the fighting feel very monotonous and bland after awhile. There is just no alternative and the maps also fail to have memorable identities like most of the maps from 1 and 2
Ah, I’ll never forget the day that made me realize how shit the randomization is during Big Run. It was the start of sizzle season. The Big Run map this time was undertow, one of the worst maps in the game for pretty much every mode. But I was thinking “hm, maybe this could actually work for salmon run” since my guess is that they had to try and make it so every map is compatible with both the regular modes AND big run. It wasn’t. In fact, in many ways it was worse, and one wave ONE I wound up with 2 bamboozlers, the grizzco charger and a fucking ink brush.
@@kyliefrotter80082 its damn near close. Undertow is one of the worst maps in the whole series with some of the worst map mode combos in the game imo. Only really being beaten by the likes of clams and zones mincemeat
@@kyliefrotter80082 I didn’t say it was the absolute worst. There’s worse maps for specific modes like Brinewater zones and Hammerhead rainmaker, but on average? Factoring every mode into the game with turf, zones, rainmaker, TC, blitz and now big run, Undertow is without a doubt the worst.
Personally what I've wanted out of Splatoon 3 was to polish and learn from the previous games as well as be more careful what to bring back. I think the core formula for Splatoon is one of the best out there but there's been many small and annoying things keeping you from fully enjoying it. While most of them are gone here some being huge deals it's not all of them. The few parts where it has refused to make progress though now stick out way more. The many split rotations are trying to fix a flawed system but now split players across ques. We have way more options for weapon kits but now are afraid make a decent amount of them. We can bring back the best maps in the entire series rather then S2's mostly mediocre selection, but then most of it gets ruined. Salmon run gets all the improvements in the world but somehow were still only stuck with 1 base rotation for over a year and no major variations to the mode. This game does so much right and there's still chance to fix the rest but we also are halfway done with the time to do so if content isn't extended so I'm not sure its gonna happen. Are we gonna have to wait till Splatoon 4 to iron out more of this stuff, or can we do it in S3? I'm willing to bet from talking with a few dataminers at this that this game went through development hell and there was a LOT more ideas for new stuff that never went through, which sucks if that's the case because its exactly what I think we needed. Regardless I think the copium theory is after side order content is extended due to how slowed down things got and maybe wanting to help the games sales on the new switch 2 wii u deluxe. Great video.
DRG has a great model of splitting player queues that I think a lot of multiplayer games should adapt. It may not fit exactly with splatoon’s structure but offering bonuses for playing certain modes at certain hours could be the way to go. Also, challenges being limited instead of being like a fall guys esque roulette just sucks straight up
Splatoon 1's maps were so cool, back when I played it I was so annoyed that there wasn't a way to just explore them on your own. Now that there is an easy way to check out all the maps, the maps are boring!
1 and 2 had plenty of variety and they never got old. They had height and length differences between the maps. Splatoon 3 has fairly flat and repetitive maps and a lot of them have no good ways to get out of being spawn camped. You either spawn camp or get spawn camped. Some of them like barnacle and some are built for it. Can only go forward or backwards and they can get entirely into your spawn. No invincibility bubble like the previous games either. So it’s instant death.
I think the devs finally got the hints about maps. They added 2 awesome new weapons. Apparently, most of the kits they added were better than previous kits. I think they are going to do even better next season. If not, then my hope is lost.
It’s actual idiocy it took them this long to do something so simple. And if you read the dev interviews they literally disregard the problem and continue making dogshit maps because they feel like it. What the actual fuck.
The marketing for this game has been rather...curious to put it nicely. One of the biggest is when they advertised "league battle" being added in a future update and they managed to both botch that and the challenge mode that ended up being the "replacement." Also as a bamboozler main I'm still waiting for not only the second kit, but for them to fix the bugged painting on ramps where those will decide not to be inked for no reason, something that has been unfixed since release. Mechanics are fun though so that's cool. Also the sub weapon balance, or lack thereof, is still the same as it always has been.
@@drift3426 as a range blaster main, i feel you on having to wait for our second kits. honestly its why i really don’t like seasons, the weapon cycles just feel awful especially when you’re waiting for your favorite to get its second kit and have to go THREE MONTHS before even getting a chance. plus, with amount of weapons being released each season having gotten progressively lower over time, its just sucked
This is my first Splatoon game, and the gameplay resonated me more than any other game has, EVER. But I still agree with your points, the game is fun enough that it doesn't matter too much how much is added, but you could do a lot more. If anything, I am really excited for the future maps. The fact that both new maps are good (while I mostly agree with your plain oatmeal analogy, crableg is still my favorite map in the game) means that it probably wasn't a fluke and they actually changed their design philosophy, and with their insanely positive reception they will definitely keep this direction for their next maps, and maybe even rework the old ones because they said in an interview that that isn't off the table. And no matter what I will always love the music, I wasn't sold on H2Woah at first but it has only grown on me.
35:09 Woah that's a really good idea, I'd love it if I could just choose which catalog I want to work on and then choose another one when I'm done with it! They could still give everyone a new catalog each season, but let you go through them at your own pace
Wayfinder does this, or so the in-game tutorial says. I think Dauntless does this now too, where if you buy the pass/upgrade to the premium track, it's permanently attached to your account and you can work on it at your leisure even when the season ends.
But that would remove the point of the pass which is to force players into playing the game or missing out. Why I have hated the battle pass system from day 1
@@cheddarsunchipsyes8144 I personally don't care if the point is to force players into playing. I feel that guilting players into playing anything is terrible. I love it whenever games allow you to do stuff at your leisure
Now take this with some salt, but I remember hearing somewhere that the senior Splatoon devs who've been with the series since 1 have been focusing on developing the singleplayer campaigns for Splatoon 3, leaving the multiplayer aspects for the newer hires, which would explain why all the multiplayer stuff feels like such a fustercluck if true.
Oh, THAT explains a lot actually. I loved Return of the Mammalians and couldn’t see the same people who vomited out Mincemeat Metalworks designing some of those levels. I wonder, does this mean they’re working on Side Order right now?
I personally would love a Hawkeye inspired stringer, that has the longest range of all the stringers, but takes almost double the normal stringer time to fully charge. Give it an Angle Shooter for the sub to reference the trick shots he does, and a Triple Inkstrike for the massive damaging hit.
What kills the game for me is that after 3 games the backbone of the experience, the netcode, went from serviceable to terrible. They've added all these small interactions that rely on precise timing but the netcode cannot handle processing such small split second interactions like squid rolling enemy attacks, etc. (bombs don't count as that damage is calculated on your end and are very consistent to squid roll because of it) The netcode can barely handle getting behind a wall in time. The amount of times I've died after getting behind cover or have killed someone after I know on their screen they were behind cover is too much to remember, and that's not even getting into the other shenanigans the netcode can lead to. It really is something that the refresh rate of the netcode was at its best in the 1st game and only got worse from there. From my point of view, they can fix the maps, perfectly balance the weapons, streamline the lobbies, and fix the content release schedule; but at the end of the day with everything running on that netcode it'll still be a subpar experience. Will I still play the game from time to time? Sure. Though I know in its current state I won't be putting anywhere near my Splatoon 1 or 2 hours into it.
44:07 This part got to me and kinda makes me question why it's a shared sentiment to cope that things get better after Side Order? I agree with the sentiment and am coping, but it feels a lil weird to go "Oh man, I sure do hope that once this single player DLC gets finished and releases like in 6 months from now, the main game gets heavily improved!" idk it feels weird
Well that’s because if I remember correctly, this happened with Splatoon 2 as well. The difference is that octo expansion was in development for less than a year and so the content released earlier compared to Splatoon 3, where side order will be in development for (at the very least) 18-19 months.
did you use TF2 as an example of a game that has an update cycle? valve doesn't care about TF2 and what the update adds is taken straight from the community
As a Splat 1 vet, I've been only playing ranked after mid-season patches, and lemme say, this has been the most fun I have had with the series. But I do agree there is so much of a lack of content each update. I wish we had gotten massive kit dump updates and more maps. Hell I miss a lot of my old fits in 2, so that says a ton.
I always hated how little xp salmon run gives you for winning when it can be so undoubtedly difficult. I mainly play salmon run and have to force myself to finish catalogs because I don't get enough xp during my matches. if I'm working on max hazard level, I expect some decent xp or at least some extra scales.. otherwise what's the point?
I remember playing Splatoon 3 every day for like three months, after I got it. Despite this, I somehow ended up missing the first few Splatfests and Big Run, and I ended up losing all interest in the game after that. Sometimes, I feel like having these big special events only last a weekend, when they’re supposed to be game sellers, really hurts the player base. I’m not saying Splatfests need to last an entire week, but why not have Big Run or that crazy battle thing they added act as an extra mode you can select during that week? Or just always available? Or something! Salmon Run used to be like this during Splatoon 2, but people liked it so much and complained enough that it eventually just became an extra game mode altogether. These special events just don’t feel special when you never get to experience them; and yeah, I know that’s part of the point, FOMO and all that, but if the event times conflict with your real world job, or relationships, or responsibilities you just never get to experience some of the best parts of the game you bought with your real world money. And that’s my point.
I’ve missed 7 according to the wiki, then again haven’t played it yet since buying shortly after release, but man missed so much Wish events lasted longer, or better yet, no subscription pass to play, I was amazing in splat 2, then fell of once subscription hit
@@tamanakio7552 yeah, Splatoon is mainly centered in Japan now. I just don't see anyone outside the community talking about the game in a positive light, which is really sad to my ears.
I remember when I learned about a bunch of the lore in 1 & 2, I was confused when I learned the actual ingame focus was mostly just the storyless pvp multiplayer stuff. The story behind the world/people in the Splatoon series was interesting, as was the platforming and bosses. I'm hoping Splatoon 4 (or a split-off game) has a greater focus on the story mode, with or without co-op. I'd be fine with a complete drop of pvp, since that never held my attention for long (they wouldn't need to get a good server too).
9:54 As a huge Tableturf Battle fan (or card battle as you like to call it lol), I can confirm it is really good! Ever since they added PvP it's been the main gamemode I play. I definitely recommend trying out pvp tableturf!
i think Splatoon maybe an example of Visual Designers having a good idea, but quickly find out there is a difference between visual design and game design they had a good concept, but over time as they have to build modular ideas onto it... so every step forward there are steps backwards, not always a net negative, but enough to make any design progress a slog... Splatoon 2 started it, but now that we are on #3 it's really starting to show a design question i had back in 2 was "why can't we make custom loadouts? it would solve of the balance and weapon selection issues" it made sense for 1 because of the limited pool and for the sake of testing... but we should just have the less limiting option by now... it's easier to manage long term.
My university’s wifi blocks me from connecting to other consoles on EVERY Switch game except Splatoon 3, so I gained 100+ hours in this game over the past year since it was the only one I could play with friends
Earlier this week, I tried to queue into a turf war match. After about 2 minutes, it said someone else disconnected. Okay then, I guess that checks out right? Someone else disconnects, so I can't play right? Whatever, I just requeued. It said the same thing again. Ok, I'll try again. I kid you not, I requeued *11 times*, and every goddamn time it said someone disconnected. I restarted the app and tried to play turf war again (which I paid 60 dollars with 20 extra dollars a year to play mind you). After 2 more tries, I finally got into a match. ~20 seconds in, the match ended because someone disconnected
The big majority that plays on Switch has terrible internet/Wi-Fi signal. NSO is terrible but there's only so much a good online structure can go when people have terrible connection. I play S3 every single day since launch, I barely have disconnects from my end and when I do, my internet is acting funny.
@@kahp1072 I was watching a twitch stream on my phone at the same time and it was never buffering or otherwise showing any wifi issues. Also I have LAN
Oh man you were spitting when you talked about maps. The lack of atmosphere is something I do not hear people talk about enough. Brinewater feels dry as a sponge on the sidewalk. I remember seeing the trailer thinking “oh word a shopping mall setting” but you hardly feel it. I think Splatoon 2 had its fair share of issues with maps but I can definitely say that that they all felt special. The map situation in 3 is for sure my least favorite aspect of the game. I have to say though, I will go to bat for 3 a lot. The core gameplay and quality of life improvements alone easily make this the best game in the series. I get a little bothered by some of the complaints I hear because this game is a much more complete experience than 2. As someone who has played both games A LOT, I think people have forgotten how stinky 2 could be. But I’m definitely starting to see some red flags, especially with the next console coming up. I’d definitely feel a little cheated if these next couple seasons don’t deliver big and then we skip to the next console.
@@internetguy7319 tbh yeah.. if you *really* look there's so many little details on many of the maps.. all they really do wrong is look disconnected from the rest of the world sometimes
Salmon Run has been the only thing keeping me from returning, and even that's been disappointing. As someone who has been only playing Salmon Run, the grind to complete the catalog is painfully slow when compared to Anarchy or even Turf War. I want to be able to enjoy features like the Shell-Out machine, earning emotes from the catalog, using money to level up gear, leveling up my rank to earn new badges, buying items for my locker, but the game doesn't reward you enough. Splatoon's drip feed system has sadly resulted in me not enjoying any of the current weapon kits, and I just have to wait until the next season to see whether something I like has been added. I still love watching content from the game made by UA-camrs/Streamers and I'm glad that hasn't changed.
Yeah the word I've been using for this edition is "cynical". Splat 1 had some of that rebel, passion-project energy that's been slowly getting corporatized out of the series. I was really hoping side order would pull it back for me but it did nothing, finished it in like an hour. Extremely disappointed
I got so bored waiting for a better trislosher too. The game wanted me to put in too many hours in the battlepass, and as soon as I failed my opportunity to get the dab emote: I lost all interest. I should never have to grind 20 levels on the last day for a fomo emote...
The life balance PSA is one of the many based stuff I love to see in your videos amidst hearing about my favorite games. Usually the "surprise" I get while just wanting to hear about a game is something like a suddenly racist joke. Keep up the amazing work, man!
Whelp, now you know how Animal Crossing fans feel about New Horizons. Extremely neglected, updates that add features that already existed in previous entries, and rushed to completion so that the developers could work on other projects like... oh how funny, Splatoon 3.
What infuriates me so much is that, despite all of the issues, pro players who are also youtubers are all like "Guys, the meta is good!" and that somehow justifies the catastrophe that is the rest of the game. Like yes, I understand that some weapons are now used competitively that used to not be, but if I can't play the game with a weapon I enjoy without getting obliterated by broken weapons, the game isn't good.
Before I completely fell off, there were several occasions where I was so done with three’s maps that I just went back and played 2. Queue times are double, sure, but if you count the games that disconnect within the first minute they’re about the same. And on top of that 3 also didn’t add any ranked modes so I can play all those in 2 as well.
My issues I think 3 really needed a new ranked or casual mode, I’m pretty much done caring about the catalog except for some emotes, Salmon run is fun but the rewards need to be easier to earn for casual players I only have a little bit of time to play each day after work so I literally can’t earn any scale’s even if it’s all I play because of the daily reset it’s frustrating. The new challenges seem fun but I’ve only been able to play it like twice because of the timed window. The only thing I’m looking forward to now is side order.
Hawkeye 🦅; Wild how many creators are making the same video (in regards to the underwhelming manifestation of Splat 3) right now. Agreed w/ all your points. I honestly havent logged into Splatoon 3 since the events that kicked off Drizzle seaon v2. The new maps are great but theyre 2 maps mixed into a pool of mediocrity and fomo (in the form of the catalog) and i juat cant be bothered anymore. Looking forward to Side Order though.
I’d be wary about side order if you haven’t bought the dlc yet. There is no reason to believe it will be as great as OE and they haven’t shown off any major gameplay of it yet. I’d get community consensus first
Great video, I had considered myself to cover a "1 year into the game" situation video.... but the problem is i didn't know all the details because I kinda stopped caring in December LOL i played the first 3 months and enjoyed it, though i was close to getting to S rank at the end of the season and when they deranked me i kinda lost motivation, then i just moved onto playing other stuff because I like more single player stuff than MP games. Last time I recall playing was on the zelda splatfest, and I have no desire or need to buy the DLC yet since it's probably another half a year until it releases. you did help me a lot to see what went on the game thus far, and yeah i can't say im too stoked as to how its being handled, i dont like the season approach and the battle pass system is terrible. I somehow grinded enough the first one but could not be bothered to repeat it every 3 months. Maybe i should try to check some of the challenge modes or something but timegating those is also a really terrible thing, having to schedule yourself around the game and not the other way around
6:08 "Of the series' three Hero Mode campaigns, this is absolutely the best one, and nobody who is normal will disagree with that statement." Well, call me "abnormal", but no it wasn't lol. You claim that most of its ideas were borrowed from Octo Expansion - I'd straight up say that it was actually a half-as*ed downgrade of it. The Octo Expansion was a creative departure from (and a huge upgrade of) the two previous Hero Mode campaigns - which, whilst more basic, were at least successful in what they were trying to accomplish. Hero Mode 3 is just Octo Expansion without half of the charm and a quarter of its challenge (and an underwhelming plot, to say the least). It was incredibly disappointing. I'm way more excited for Side Order.
I freaking love Splatoon 3, it has the best concept for a shooter ever, I’ve been playing since 1, but I feel like they just don’t get it with the maps, weapon kits, and other things.
I personally don’t fault EPD 5 for the slower update cycle, especially since it’s for a damn good reason (avoiding crunch). But it does break my heart that Splatoon 3 fell off as much as it did (in the West, Splatoon 3 is still going strong in Japan). Maybe this game could’ve used more time in the oven, perhaps to be a cross-gen launch window title for the Switch 2. As for the comment code, which Hawkeye: Clint Barton or Kate Bishop?
Maybe don't release a second online shooter from a popular franchise on the same console and finish the other game from a popular franchise that they also work on 🤔 Is like releasing another Mario Kart or Smash on the same Switch

OG WiiU Splatoon addict here, Splatoon 3 is an absolute blast where EVERYTHING feels fine-tuned to perfection… and then placed on the WORST presentation stage known to mollusk-kind: those horrible maps. There’s a lot of polish that I feel we’re taking for granted, from tiny sound design details to the incredible UI, but YEESH those maps are an ugly stain on what otherwise could have easily been the objectively best Splatoon. I never got into 2 because I didn’t vibe with the Specials, and because I didn’t like the new maps. Now that some have returned in 3, I’m starting to realize I took ‘em for granted. Mako Mart in particular is incredible. But I critique it because I love it. It’s not like Pokémon where I’ve given up hope. I know that the devs care and that they listen, and I personally am on Team Copium (bigger updates after Side Order). The characters, music, and memories I’ve made with this game are close to my heart and Salmon Run in this game may be my favorite mode for anything… ever. I even got the Splatoon 3 OLED when the game launched, and lemme tell you I FELT that upgrade moving from my launch model. My two major gripes are the internet issues and maps, but I think things will work out. Shipshape is my favorite map in the entire game, and I have lots of excitement for what’s to come!
The best system for this game was the wii'u, it is not the same on Switch. It was so good to have a quick way to see how the map is changing and adapt your gameplay to it.
Splatoon in general means a lot to me, all these months playing Splatoon 3 felt like I was having fun sometimes and then just not even touching the game for weeks. I just tried to went back to play some games of simple turf war in Splatoon 2 and I enjoyed that so much just because the maps are fun to play in. If Splatoon 3 in general doesn´t get better after Side Order is released I will keep playing the game probably but I know I will feel disappointment, especially because it cost me a lot to raise the money for the game and also pay the subscription.
Splatoon 3 was my first Splatoon game. Even as a complete newcomer to the franchise, I could tell that both the base game and the updates have been... shall we say... _light on content._ The constantly degrading scope and quality of each major update killed my hopes that my biggest problem with the game - *the utterly abysmal map design* - would ever be addressed in any meaningful capacity, and I ended up dropping the game altogether shortly before the DLC was announced. Sucks that the one other "Liquid Shooter" on the market ended up being predatory FOMO garbage. I wonder how long it will take before there's an indie studio with the guts and the chutzpah to throw their hat into the ring... or rather, throw their hat into the ink, as the case may be.
I got the itch to play Splatoon 3 and make gear for the current season after the year splatfest, and matchmaking and the huge irritating disconnect wait is terrible. Fix the netplay and people play more and support it more
It's not juat the netplay, it's also the maps and the grinding slog that is the catalogues, too. Also, imo, big run was a bad idea, the competitiveness inherent to it feels awful if you aren't one of those people that hyperfocus the mode and basically high-score the egg count constantly, squeezing out all but the most cracked players from the gold placements. Getting silver or bronze even after feeling like you absolutely busted your ass for a big run feels pretty terrible.
Ypur saying it like it's a bad thing that is a big number of weapons and this season is fire and the game is growing and getting better with positive feedback with each update
The biggest issue i have as a casual player is definitely the connection issues. The maps compared to splatoon 2 aren't as good I feel, but that's the main thing, it just makes the game unplayable.
I keep trying to like Splatoon 3 but it's so hard to get into it. The maps are hit or miss, the matchmaking is atrocious, and the servers keep having problems. It gets so sweaty that it's not really that much fun after a while. As soon as you get on, you either have a decent match or you get curbstomped with no way of winning so you just sit there watching the other team sweat so hard even though they've already won.
I started the splatoon series with the third & i am NOT buying any more splatoon games, this shit is EVERYTHING a pvp shooter shouldn't do, matchmaking G O N E, balancing G O N E, rewards G O N E, connection G O N E, the only thing it has going for it is the story but even then it's ... meh + the new side - order even tho the rogue lite is a good idea it's extremely lacking, like you can 100% (a fucking rogue lite mode = pure rng) in a fucking week !!! WTF ?!
Wouldn’t it be great if the Splatoon development team in Japan hired guys like Captain Astronaut to give creative input? He just pitched 4 ideas for new Stringers and I love them
I would play this game way more if the internet got better, I'm like level 20-30 and that is proof that I don't play as much. I only play when Splatfest and Big Run happens and play until I have internet issues and give up out of stress due to lack of fun. I live with my family and I do not have an ethernet cable so I have to deal with this, the online service should be good with or without the erthernet cable and i've heard that the cable only mitigates the issue.
Hawkeye But Captain, Splatoon 3 is totally getting better and better with each new season with millions of players still playing it and it totally doesn't have any negative feedback. Sarcasm aside, I've said the same thing about s3 being fundamentally flawed as a sequel and playing less and less in similar videos, so I won't even bother retread the same song and dance. What I will say is that while it's slowly improving in a few areas, having to wait a full year for a weapon that's been teased since the first trailer doesn't paint (unintended pun) a pretty picture for the game as a whole. It genuinely feels like every addition s3 does right, something it does wrong just overshadows it.
Me and the boys still waiting for Mahi Mahi to go back to its old Splatoon 1 layout, same with Hammerhead but to still have that finished aesthetic that 3 gives.
Hawkeye. I do really like Splatoon 3 but absolutely hate the FOMO aspects of the game, I've got too much on my plate already to be worrying about missing out on a cool pose or something and there are other games that I want to play and relax with. On top of that, the only way I can get some of these things now is through GACHA!? Miss me with that. In all honesty, I was a bit worried when Splatoon 3 was first announced as my first reaction was "Already? It hasn't been long since Splatoon 2 finished up!" so I may be the only person that hopes we don't see a Splatoon 4 for quite some time. Let the devs cook and see what they can do to freshen things up a bit.
The weapons are releasing in a pattern. First, we got a new shooter, roller, and charger, which were the 3 release classes of Splatoon. Then we got a new blaster and brush, which were sub-classes of shooters and rollers respectively in Splatoon. then we got a splatling and slosher, which were post-release classes in Splatoon. My theory is that the next time we get new main weapons we will get a new dualie and a new brella, which were new classes introduced in Splatoon 2. Then in the last or second to last seasonal update, we will get a new stringer and splatana, which are the new Splatoon 3 weapon classes. Mark my words: it will happen.
Splatoon as a whole will never really fall out in my opinion. It is such a unique concept that you can’t get anywhere else. And if someone were to try an mimic it it would come of as just that, a mimic. Splatoon is so close to perfection yet so far from it at the same time. The game is miles better than splatoon 2 yet not inherently the splatoon 3 we all hoped for. As I’ve said this game could keep updating for a decade and it would be fine, the core foundation of this game is stupidly strong. What matters is how Nintendo can build off that foundation and how they have been going through with that is slightly upsetting. It’s still my most played game by far (I’m so close to 5 star swig oml) and I don’t see myself dropping the game anytime soon. Tldr, the game has the most frustrating of small issues but gets some of the biggest issues fixed
The only complaint I hear constantly about the game that isn’t one for me is disconnect issues. It never affects me directly usually only happens to other players in the match. Idk maybe Nintendo slipped me the good netcode because I have pledged my soul to them.
"Nobody bought Splatoon 3 for its single-player." Says you. Splatoon's single-player campaigns are excellent! As for multiplayer . . . it kind of sucks when you don't know enough players close to your skill level? When I do play in rooms my friends are in, I start to feel like Hawkeye, and I don't even use a Stringer (or an Axe)!
The Splatoon devs make a great game and then proceed to add and do the most annoying things. The problems are so obvious and straight forward and they avoid directly fixing the problem.
@@poyomaster3858I really wanted to play this game as my main when I started but all of the changes ended up driving me away. Like you said challenges were the nail in the coffin as well as continuous terrible maps

@@doodlegame8704 2 alright maps they're significantly better than most maps in this game but they've still got issues

Yeah, because the maps are usually biased towards 2 weapon classes.

I normally just grow out of love for it, with nothing against the game, but splat three feels like a waste of 60$
@@jazzuccivod I ain’t buying Splat 4 I’m gonna be honest with you
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been backed into a a corner by the opposite team because there’s literally nowhere to go.

Most probably - nintendo and their studios are preparing for the next console.
There is just no alternative and the maps also fail to have memorable identities like most of the maps from 1 and 2
saying it's your favorite game when it's barely playable is defending it.

I love it whenever games allow you to do stuff at your leisure
all of this wouldve been easily prevented if our team won the finalfest
A scoped slinger would be cool, you know you can just turn into Hawkeye and go crazy, it'd be pretty cool
There's literally no source whatsover for that in any interviews.
@@ausgod538 Well that's why I said take it with some salt, I have no idea if it's true or not.
I personally would love a Hawkeye inspired stringer, that has the longest range of all the stringers, but takes almost double the normal stringer time to fully charge. Give it an Angle Shooter for the sub to reference the trick shots he does, and a Triple Inkstrike for the massive damaging hit.
14:29 Hard agree. hell octo expansion - a dlc - did the 8 thing better than splatoon 3 is doing the 3 thing. We could’ve had 3 maps in rotation.
44:07
This part got to me and kinda makes me question why it's a shared sentiment to cope that things get better after Side Order? I agree with the sentiment and am coping, but it feels a lil weird to go "Oh man, I sure do hope that once this single player DLC gets finished and releases like in 6 months from now, the main game gets heavily improved!" idk it feels weird
Well that’s because if I remember correctly, this happened with Splatoon 2 as well. The difference is that octo expansion was in development for less than a year and so the content released earlier compared to Splatoon 3, where side order will be in development for (at the very least) 18-19 months.
did you use TF2 as an example of a game that has an update cycle? valve doesn't care about TF2 and what the update adds is taken straight from the community
tbf, it _had_ an update cycle. Like how Splatoon 2 _had_ an update cycle 🙃
I’ve missed 7 according to the wiki, then again haven’t played it yet since buying shortly after release, but man missed so much
Wish events lasted longer, or better yet, no subscription pass to play, I was amazing in splat 2, then fell of once subscription hit
Small note, as someone who exclusively plays turf war, the map changes do NOT feel better than the old ones even in turf war😞
It's almost like they're not confident in this franchise anymore after their own marketing doomed the game's mainstream publicity or something...
Can you elaborate? What happened?
Their marketing is perfectly fine for the target audience: japanese players
Wtf you talking about. Splatoon is more popular than never, especially in Japan.
I definitely recommend trying out pvp tableturf!
i think Splatoon maybe an example of Visual Designers having a good idea, but quickly find out there is a difference between visual design and game design
they had a good concept, but over time as they have to build modular ideas onto it... so every step forward there are steps backwards, not always a net negative, but enough to make any design progress a slog... Splatoon 2 started it, but now that we are on #3 it's really starting to show
a design question i had back in 2 was "why can't we make custom loadouts? it would solve of the balance and weapon selection issues" it made sense for 1 because of the limited pool and for the sake of testing... but we should just have the less limiting option by now... it's easier to manage long term.
bc custom loadouts fucking suck
Custom loadouts sound nice, but would cause everyone to use the same one.
My university’s wifi blocks me from connecting to other consoles on EVERY Switch game except Splatoon 3, so I gained 100+ hours in this game over the past year since it was the only one I could play with friends
I have spent most of Splatoon 3's lifetime playing Splatoon 1. You know, when it hasn't been down.

I told myself I'd come back to play splatoon 3 more once my favorite weapon got another kit, hopefully with a special I like
I'm still waiting 👴
I love using the Stamper, but I hate Burst Bombs and Zipcaster. It really needs a second kit.
We're on splatoon 1.75 at best.
Same division of Nintendo EPD, no less.
Is it weird that considering all this, Foamstars can be a legitimate competitor just on the sheer fact that SE have better online servers
Its not going to compete anytime soon when Splatoon is extremely popular in japan
the servers in the beta were dogshit and crashed more than splatoon
Aaaaaand it's dead.
Yeah the thing is the challenges were it, but they ruined it and made sure nobody was allowed to play them.

6:08 "Of the series' three Hero Mode campaigns, this is absolutely the best one, and nobody who is normal will disagree with that statement."
Well, call me "abnormal", but no it wasn't lol.
Side Order is looking like the upgrade to Octo Expansion that Alterna wanted to be
I don't think it's half assed, but I think it's 2nd place and the best one is Octo expansion for sure

How much is the subscription?

I keep trying to like Splatoon 3 but it's so hard to get into it. The maps are hit or miss, the matchmaking is atrocious, and the servers keep having problems. It gets so sweaty that it's not really that much fun after a while.
I play with Wi-Fi and have almost zero problems from my end. Having erthernet doesn't mean will solve all the problems if the connection is unstable.
Hawkeye
But Captain, Splatoon 3 is totally getting better and better with each new season with millions of players still playing it and it totally doesn't have any negative feedback.

Glad to see the Captain was Team Frye with us. 💛💛💛
"Nobody bought Splatoon 3 for its single-player."
