  • Ever wonder what a years worth of food for a family of 4 looks like? Come along and let me show you. As much as I wish I had one, I do not have a root cellar. My pantry is not perfect. Its small and cluttered and we are in there everyday. Jars of food get moved around on a daily basis. Its a working pantry. It doesn't stay clean or at the perfect temperature but that's ok. I can still put up quite a lot of home grown food in there and I am so thankful that we have it. Our meat comes from farm raised pigs and wild game that we harvest. We are big hunters and we fill our freezer with organic elk, deer and turkey. Our freezer full of wild game are kept in a different location.
I've been so excited to do this pantry tour video. Homesteading is a challenge. Its not easy. This year was a hard gardening year and I had crops fail and not produce as well as expected but I was still able to put up a very large amount of the things we eat. All the hard work all summer long leads to this moment, self sufficiency. The moment that you can walk into the pantry and get all the supplies you need for your home cooked meals. This year I preserved our foods by canning, pressure canning, freezing, dehydrating, and leaving some things just as they are and storing them in crates.
Some of the things you will see in the video were not home grown but were store bought. We do buy items at the store in bulk. I buy things in large quantities from Azure Standard. Its important to have food security and buying in bulk and preserving your home grown food are great ways to do that.
Was I able to preserve a full years worth of food? Come on and lets take a look.

Loved everything in your food pantry, my favorite was the canned pineapple ❣️which is a great idea because PAs aren’t that expensive they do go on sale a lot.
Yes Florida is about fresh seafood and farmers markets. We have the best of both worlds down here. ❤

Your in Florida during winter. Have a bed for sweet potatoes (SWP) and dig it up in December. Any SWP tubers or tiny spuds throw back in and top with compost. It is left to the weather and with the exception of last year (rainy/floody) they usually do well with no/low maintenance.

That's funny. I do that too. Make wine and mead, but I rarely drink it. It's just so fun to make. 🤣

When growing peas, I use pig panels/cattle panels so that the peas can be trained to climb the panels and the I grow carrots around the outer edges of where the peas are growing. they seem to do well for me in this fashion in Colorado.

Your freeze dryer tray rack is upside down. The orange heat mats go on top. Beautiful pantry

😂🤦‍♀️ that’s probably why I’m always griping about the trays not sliding in easy. Thanks for pointing that out .

You may not have a super fancy pantry but you are rich with your canned and preserved goods. I aspire to one day have half of a pantry like yours. We had a tough year in Oregon too so I didn't get my usual tomato harvest that I love to can. Thanks for sharing and cheers to a better year in the garden!

Y'all prefer Rollo's or Pattie's? My parents just trimmed their fig tree back a lot if y'all are interested getting some of those cuttings to root. My sister is going plant some all around her property in VA to give the wild life something to eat other than her growing garden.

We usually go to Joe Pattie’s but we just got oysters from a place called Maria’s so I think we are gonna switch. Joe Pattie’s is getting very touristy!

Enjoyed your video. We're in Tennessee. We don't have the size garden that you have but we do try to plant a few things. Our tomatoes, peas and beans did poorly also. Looking forward to your next one.

Thank you for the tour! Super interesting to see how your family prepares for the off-season. I'm on the east coast, and even I noticed some crops not performing like they have in the past. Tomatoes and radishes were especially bad this year. My garden is much smaller scale, of course.

I've tried squash cornbread dressing. It was amazing. Love all that elderberry everything. You wouldn't happen to have any deer tallow to bring to FL would you?

    • @lizhayes7474

That sounds good. I’ll have to give it a try. And no we don’t have any tallow here.

What an amazing pantry! Such variety. I am gonna be on pins and needles waiting for your egg recipes. I would love to see a breakdown of the bulk storage in the bucket, and pickled egg recipes. Just haven’t found a great recipe yet.

Okra is my favorite too ❤❤❤❤ I live in zone 3 in northern Minnesota so I have to start it in the house and plant it next to the south side of my house or garage for extra heat, makes it hard to grow a lot of it but I get a little!
    Blessings

Hello Liz, wow, it is like looking into a supermarket. I can remember in the mid 1950´s, near London, my grandmother still used to store eggs in waterglass, which was a leftover from wartime egg rationing. Moved to Australia in 1959, now living in South Australia, never gone back to the UK, although we did spend some time on the east coast of the US in 2008.

That’s what my mom always did, canned everything she could, even if it was a ton. Because you might have a bad crop for a couple of years

Hmmm. Sweet potatoes are easy and can be easily stored. Not sure what happened there. Peas? Also very very easy. Are there varieties that are better suited for your region? Your soil looks awesome, so that can't be it.

That building is really well insulated. So the only time we do anything special is if it’s going to be in the single digits and then we just turn the light on in there . We have a flood light as the bulb and that keeps it just above freezing. Even when it gets to the negative digits that bulb works well.
