CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tripper (Bill Murray) rallies the troops with a rousing pep talk before the last day of the Intercamp Olympiad.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Set at a low-end summer camp and aimed squarely at a teen audience, Meatballs is a light screwball comedy that turned its low-budget Canadian roots into a very profitable box-office run. The biggest reason for the film's success is Bill Murray who stars as Tripper, the head counselor who runs things at Camp Northstar with the help of his love interest Roxanne (Kate Lynch) and the camp's director Morty (Harvey Atkins), who is affectionately known as Mickey. Camp opens with Tripper and Morty preparing the misfit counselors-in-training -- Spaz, Fink, Crockett, A.L., Candace, Wendy, and Wheels among them -- for the arrival of their hyperactive little charges. After settling in, kids and counselors begin their activities with a soccer game in which depressed 11-year-old Rudy (Chris Makepeace) accidentally loses the game. Cast out by the other children, Rudy runs away only to come across Tripper, who befriends the boy and makes him his running partner. Romance, sexy fun, and comic hijinx -- usually with the heavy-sleeping Morty as their target -- lead up to an annual Olympiad in which Camp Northstar battles the wealthier and athletically superior residents of Camp Mohawk. The challenging events include cup stacking, potato-sack racing, and a nauseating hot dog-eating contest in which the portly Fink devours his way to victory. With the two-day event tied up, it comes down to the cross-country run, in which Tripper enters Rudy. Meatballs was the first major directorial effort by multi-talented filmmaker Ivan Reitman, whose name has since become synonymous with the comedy genre.

mac's soundtrack combined with this audio clip made it sound psychopathic
aw6ken Haha seriously! Here it has a completely different tone
It’s still beautiful mixtape so it just doesn’t matter
Mac.. who?...Elmer Bernstein composed the amazing soundtrack to this film.
@@ryline666 mac miller, an artist, who passed away two years ago. go listen to "it just doesn't matter" from his album called "faces" and you'll find the movie sample from the first few seconds of the song.
@@aw6kens Ah, okay then. Thanks for the recommendation. I'm usually very hesitant to check out newer hip hop tracks as the majority sounds like uninspired vapid drivel but this dude actually has some decent tracks. Never heard of him before, gonna listen to some more. Plus he's a fan of one of my favourite films so that's bonus, cheers mang!
This entire monologue was improvised...genius
It seems improvised, but I always wonder about the part where he says masseuse, not masseur. It sounds like he may have mis-pronounced masseuse in an earlier take? Or maybe it's just an inside joke from something that happened during shooting? Or maybe it's just an ad lib and I'm reading too much into it?
@@jimmydddddhe said that like it’s a girl giving the massage instead of a guy
With a masseuse ( female) being preferred.
"It just doesn't matter." -A great mantra in 1979, an absolutely necessary one for your mental health in 2021.
Amen
Doing self matters not what other idiots do
And 2022 and 2023 and 2024...😂
I come back to this clip whenever im feeling bad or worried and just need the boost. No matter how you're doing or what you try, IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!
S/O my boy Mac Miller for immortalizing this scene in his song
The scene was already immortalized decades before Mac miller

Perhaps the greatest motivational speech of all time
Second best has to be from The Replacements.

Honestly can have either effect
I already forgot the whole speech in the seconds it took to scroll down to the comments
Mac, you matter. You've always mattered to us. Love you man

Nothing matters!!!!
Undoubtedly the greatest moment in my life. When. "it just doesn't matter" rang true to me to continue on with my beliefs. This is gospel for those who understand we all deserve our own destiny.
How could you not say it better my friend!

REST IN PEACE MR RAMIS. this is one of my favorite movies of all time. it really reminds me of those golden years
Harold Ramis was a great person.
And now Ivan Reitman 😔
I love that Bill Murry is extolling his personal philosophy in the scene.

the newest Olympic power Trinidad & Tobago..love it.
a big cheers to all of us for clicking on this.
who doesn't need a good pep talk every now and then
A pep rally to champion not caring! Brilliant!! Bill goes happily off the rails here and pulls everyone along with him. Wonderful performance, and the reactions seem genuine, as if this was the first time they saw him do this. I love Wendy's face, like she's just fallen in love with him at 1:32.
Wendy and Morty (Mickey) didn't know how to react at first, but Roxanne and Rudy knew exactly what was going on.
Tripper was an inspiration.
Larry was probably on the toilet during this speech

0:51 Morty's face when he mentions "the world's newest Olympic Superpower" Trinidad & Tobago...
Yesssssssss! Awesome!
"All the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk cause they got all the money".......FUNNY stuff, Classic Bill.
This is similar to Stripes where Murray is saying, "We were all stupid enough to enlist in the Army!"
One of the great movie monologues.
That speech holds up SO well.
I still sometimes chant this at work.
RIP MAC MILLER 🌹
The Great One at the height of his powers.
Most inspiring speech
Morty’s face when he realizes what Tripper was doing was fantastic at 1:09
Yep, as the San Francisco Giants' season is going down in flames, that is my new mantra - "It just doesn't matter." And that's easy for me to say, since my #2 team is the Red Sox.
I'm trying to memorize this speech so I can rant it at a public park.
Rest In Peace Mac!
Even Morty was getting into it!
"Hi Mickey!"
Bill Murray is the only person I will never, ever get sick of.
I 💗 Bill Murray!
This movie made me want to be a camp counselor and I was, for two seasons. Best summers of my life!
This movie came out when I was 10 in the summer of '79. I had nothing to do no cable my friends are all a camp and I must have seen this movie about 11:00 or 12 times. I loved this movie still do. And by default I would go and see the other movie that was playing in the theater the same time, the main event with Barbra Streisand around Ryan O'Neal. It sucked but at least I wasn't home but I really did love meatballs
The moment Bill Murray became Bill Murray?
I was 10 years old in 1979 when Meatballs was released to the theaters.
While it's a good, funny movie, as a kid I really couldnt connect with it because from my experience and vantage point, I saw it as a huge inaccuracy about sleepaway camp. I hated summer camp. Every summer my (abusive) mother sent me to camp against my will. One month of day camp and one month of sleepaway camp.
She sent me not because it would be good for me, but just to get me out of her hair for extended lengths of time. As much as I hated my abusive, dysfunctional home, it was the hell I knew. I would have preferred to stay home on my summer break from school. Stay up as long as I liked at night, sleep as late as I wanted in the mornings. Play outside with the neighborhood kids. Hang out with my best friends. Watch TV and see what I missed due to the usual school hours, etc.
At day camp and sleepaway camp, I had to put up with being picked on and bullied not only by my fellow campers, but also by the camp counselors. The campers and counselors who didn't bully me, turned a blind eye to those who did.
When I wrote home about all the abuse and neglect I had to put up with, to cover up, the camp office saw to it that my postcards home didn't get mailed. Instead, they trashed them. When I got home, I discovered my mother received only 4 of my postcards when I wrote home 2-3 postcards a day, every day, for the whole month. One of the 4 postcards that made it home was a phony "having a great time, wish you was here" type of message that they forced us to write. Not to mention the mattresses they furnished us with to sleep on, were all urine stained by bedwetting campers of previous summers.
In Meatballs, sleepaway camp is portrayed as a real fun, charming, and happy experience. In my experience it was anything but.
My favorite Murray movie moment... many thanks for posting.
RIP Mac

He was a great guy in this. Maybe a playboy, but at least he was a good friend to a quiet and troubled teen boy with an eternal black cloud over his head.
Bill Murray definitely jumped out of the Camino with this one😂

It really is a gem.
Let the word go forth, from this day forward, that it just doesn't matter!
That last part is true. It doesn't matter if you win or lose because all the really good looking girls will only go out with the guys who have all the money. Deal with it.

The mantra of the “Lie Flat” and “Let It Rot” movements.
Thank you Mac Miller! Favorite track off faces
This is basically how I abide
Played this for my son when he was loosening on madden 🤣🤣
That's because Bill's wearing 70's Loungewear for Swingers. His ridiculous-looking pantaloons “display the merchandise” while providing a drawstring that allows “easy access” for interested parties.
Really is mastering the law of detachment. Its a beautiful place to be in. People attached to so much BS its goofy. Care about the dumbest things.
Ima listen to this before every one of my races
I woke up to this at 3am.
So many of The Not Ready for Prime Time Players from SNL’s “golden age” went on to star in movies. John Belushi,Chevy Chase,Dan Ackroyd,Bill Murray,Gilda Radner,Steve Martin😎😎
Man do I see a lot of rowdy Rodney piper

Bill Murray is their Big Toe!
He is a saint, a priest, and an apostle. 😁
So glad I found this! Exactly the motivation I need right now. Mahalos! 🤙🤪

Bowser and Garfield in the Same scene
Oh, that's right. Bill did voice Garfield in the forgettable movie.
An underrated classic!
I somehow doubt that Bill has this attitude about Game 7 tonight.
