Homelessness surges in San Diego County

- The number of homeless people living in San Diego County continues to rise.
In its annual Point-in-Time Count conducted in January, the San Diego Regional Task Force on Homelessness found 10,264 people living on the streets and in shelters, a 22 percent increase from the same time last year.
And while the task force says the actual number is much higher, the number, it says, is "sobering."

Imagine more people losing their ability to live in an apartment or house in the richest country ever in history.
In the richest state in the country. It's all about politicians getting rich not helping people.
@@craig162 It's about the rich who have paid off politicians to zone housing to the point where the poor can't afford anything.
send them to the white house
We are not the richest country if you consider our total debt - we have the most debt of any country ever in history and its growing.
If it makes you happier, we are all becoming poorer. This is such a multi-pronged problem. Housing is so expensive and I know first hand it is very expensive to build with a lot of obstacles. Society is getting more technical and difficult. Education and work are becoming less valued. A lot of people are actually proud of their ignorance. More and more people are not able to cope. They turn to drugs and alcohol. Entitlement is rife. It is a downward spiral of social decay.
The math is simple , what they’re doing is creating not decreasing homelessness
There just has to be places where people can rent shelter for $500/month. California does nothing while trailer parks get lot fees tripled, or bull dozed for million dollar condos.
Our have to be a illegals to get that
Where can you even get property taxes for $500 a year or mortgage ? You couldn't even get by on social security/disability for that amount and survive unless you're living with someone these days😢
@@deliciaford4343 Well, I am talking about subsidized housing. San Diego spends $20000/year on each homeless person. That money has done nothing but lead to this.
My thought is that a lot of people start homeless because they cant afford a place to stay. People get harder to help the longer they stay on the streets.
If the City has some land, they should turn some to trailer parks. Put a small 10x14 studio trailers, or 10x22 2 bedroom trailers on the lot. Rent them for $500/month.
Obviously low income requirements, and checks for law breakers that would cause them to be forced out.
That's because they pay extra for living in California and bragging about how nice the weather is.
@@tqllaThat would just create a low income slum filled with drug addicts and the mentally ill with the poor elderly stuck among them.
Mayor Gloria is blaming other cities? Dude, step up to the plate and start doing what you promised you would do during your campaign. The blame game is getting old.
That's what democrats do! People in your state keep voting these people in...
@@goodone5590 --- Because Republicans don't offer solutions.
What does san diego expect charging so much for rent ive seen $1,800 studios in not so great areas
Red herring even though rent is high. Drug addiction extreme alcoholism and mental illness by far main issues.
If you're a landlord, you have to charge a ton. What if they do a rent moratorium again?
This is the reason why there’s so many homeless. The NIMBYs don’t want affordable housing and the insane price of rent along with stagnant wages. People that can afford it will be moving out of here if they aren’t already
@Joe-no7gs If what you were saying is true why are almost half the people on the street from other towns and other states? They made to the choice to be here. The obvious answer is drugs and bad life choices so stop blaming everyone else just because they made some bad decisions.
Study supply and demand.
As California tax base and state deficit spiral downwards its only going to get much worse for all of California.
Can California still pay reparations? Just askin because newsom put it back on the table
Zoning laws in big cities are part of the problem. Skyrockecting property values, skyrocketing rent prices, substandard and awful lack of mental health care and this is the result.
Boomers want to have real estate monopoly, it's not that hard or long time to build apartment
I think I wanted to rent a shabby place in San Diego, CA it was very small the combo kitchen bathroom was kitchen combo was less than desirable,it was about the size of a camper, the guy wanted $4500 up front! I told him I would rather live under a bridge .
@@Bekssss they preach diversity and inclusion but when the city / county proposes to build apartments and mutli-unit houses, they immediately scream "not in my backyard".
Something is WRONG! Where is all the MONEY that they're supposedly taking up for the HOMELESS going?
California is already one of the highest taxed states now so always raising taxes where the rich never truly pay more as they have tax accountants who know how to avoid taxation and a lying fake media that refuses to report the truth fully.

Not true Gordon, what ever happened to getting 2 or 3 roommates and splitting the rent? Or working 2 jobs? Where there's a will there is a way..

Homeless people everywhere
Hooray for the homemore people looking down on the homeless people. More division bc there isn’t enough divisiveness already.
People who are homeless long-term are there by choice. You can provide them with food, housing, transportation but as soon as you tell them they have to be sober or work, they choose the tent every time.
Laziness, procrastination, hypocrisy
Eventually America will stop being a country people want to come to & its citizens will start to move to other countries
I lived in the US for a while, I couldn't wait to leave. It's an Ok place to visit for short periods. The lifestyle back home in Australia is so much nicer.
@@leemo2000 so what about all the homeless I read about in Australia?
@@curiouspenguin6887 unfortunately there has been an increase to 123,000 as of 2022. Our new government (left leaning) is putting $1b into tackling the issue. We have a fairly good safety net and there are rooms for people to stay in, some choose not to for various reasons, including mental health issues. Health care is free at point of use for everyone of course.
The homeless issue is nowhere near as visible here as it is in San Fran or LA for example. I didn’t see much of a homeless problem when I lived in Boston and Tampa but that was in 2014 so things may have gotten worse.
Haha white people are moving out of the country. Illegals are staying because the government is giving them free shit.
You have to be very wealthy to just pick up, leave and move to another country. Lmao.
Those people likely aren't leaving for any reasons related to homelessness.
We’re never going to see a change in homelessness until they accurately audit these places that are receiving all this money for homeless issues and hold them accountable! They keep getting richer while ppl continue to suffer
More attractive you make living on the streets with free food and other services, the more people will flood in. The word gets out nationwide. These "campers" talk to one another. San Diego is a magnet already due to the mild climate.
Yeah that's real attractive. WTF
@@Emmy-J When the choice is between living on the streets in bad weather with no free food or services and something better, the choice is clear. If you want to live around that chaotic scene, have at it.
The homeless problem is a multibillion dollare industry that perpetuates itself to generate revenue for those how are employed by the state and private sectors. Would you solve a problem that ended your employment?
When they stop receiving federal funding then they’ll truly care..
🌚 Nope. That's why these so-called case managers are horrible at their jobs, too. There is no intention of rehabilitating or housing homeless. They just give 'em enough scraps to get by on. It's a complete David Lynch nightmare.
This reply couldn't be more true!! They generate an incredible amount of cash flow from people's unfortunate situations. There is no real way to hold anyone accountable for the recklessness that is involved in the funding not being properly spent in the areas they are meant to be spent on. These folks say that people decline the services offered. Well, that is because the service they offer is borderline jail like and totally invasive. How would anyone like to have to report to someone when you leave, and then also share your room with someone else who shares the same problems that you are experiencing and you don't even know that person. It is a whole deal that requires much patience on the homeless persons part (whom by the way are totally traumatized by the experience first and foremost) and there is no real compassion in the enforcement that is set to regulate the peoples spaces and the areas that pertain to them. I intend to write an article on the subject and hope sincerely that I receive some gratification for my bluntness. It needs to be said.
No they won't. Why would take care when they're getting paid to do their job any differently than if they'd stop getting paid they just quit
If they don't care now they won't care then they'll just quit. It's the bottom line the dollar is what they're looking at those people in power are assholes
I have an idea, why don’t they STOP RAISING the rent and everything else and make basic necessities affordable!?!?! It may not profit them but it will HELP A LOT OF PEOPLE! But since they don’t want to lose anymore money to fill up their bank accounts (including those on other countries like china) they rather give you a tent, blanket and the phone number of a drug dealer to spend your life away on the streets.

San Diego became unaffordable for working people after the year 2000. There has not been enough money spent on infrastructure repair, housing , health care to name only a few areas. Mayors are focus only on tourism dollars it seems. I believe it may take the next 20 years to play catch up to make this city great again. This is probably true for a lot of US cities. People are frustrated and angry with life , because it takes so much to survive these days. I do not have the same sense of pride as I once did living in SD. I no longer brag to my relatives that I live here.
