I broke both my ankles at the same time in 2020. I ended up having a tibialis tendon reconstruction and ligament reattachment surgery. I began working out consistently in 2022 (tomorrow is my 2 year anniversary..80lbs down..yay) but working out barefoot has dramatically improved my balance and mobility. I very rarely ever have any issues with either ankle. Im never going back.
I subscribed to this channel a week or two ago and I am so glad you had already made this video! I was born with severe Pigeon Toes (Metatarsus Adductus) and had to wear casts and sleep with my feet in shoes attached to a board so they would grow straight and give me a chance to be able to walk. Well, not only did I crawl out of my crib strapped to a baby torture device, when I could walk I apparently relished in stomping on my older brother's toes with my casts! Funny stories aside here I am a middle aged woman, on a fitness goal, and worried about my feet. This is great advice. Thank you for your hard work Justina and I'm going to keep watching!
I was just doing calf raises the other day and I was really feeling it in my feet and thinking I needed to strengthen them! Couldn't be more timely! Thank you!!! 💕💕
As someone with very narrow feet and (ugh) bunions I implore you younguns to pay attention to this lady! I wish I'd seen information like this in my 20's to prevent the weird feet I have now!
I retired from nursing and I love your genuine desire to give people truth! As an RN I have been alone in my beliefs to fix the cause don’t throw a med at it or in this case some pillows for your feet. Your sassy commentary could be mine 🤣 I just started my menopause fitness with the ap you have functional strength training on and I am loving it❤ ty for the truth
Such an important video, it is not emphasized enough. I was always taught that I need orothodics to not walk like a penguin due to my flat feet, and now after strength training barefoot 4-5 times per week in a year, I walk like a normal person. I also find that lots of people with flat feet also have a weak core and glutes due to walking from their knees since their feet aren't strong enough to carry them. And those excersizes with the big toe - OMG! My 19 month old toddler does this naturally since we haven't yet purchased shoes for him and he's been walking for a while. Shoes really did ruin our lives didn't it. (Don't worry, I still wear heels for special occasions, I didn't go that crazy lol). Thanks for your work Justina:)
Thank you so so much for doing this! I know it's not ideal but all my working out comes from UA-cam videos. Thanks to you I switched from random videos to Sydney Cummins! I have spent a lot of time wondering about foot health . I spent a decade wearing work boots all day every day and it really damaged my feet and caused some nerve damage. Working out barefoot and wearing bearfoot shoes have done me so good. Like my legs used to go numb. Working out barefoot has done so much good but I never had someone actually say that's a good method
Justina you are the best!!! Thank you for making this video. I have a lot of experience with foot pain and I do all of the exercises that you mentioned. I also completely agree about modern day shoes being too narrow in the toe box and too cushioned. It's very hard to find shoes that are shaped properly in the toe box as most of them are considered "ugly or unfashionabe" and fashion dictates what sells. I really wish all shoes were made properly in the first place because often you don't figure this out until after you start having foot problems later on in life. The health of your feet should take priority over fashion. Anyhow, I am so happy that you made this video to educate people. I do have to wear orthotics full time due to specific foot issues, but I spend time everyday doing exercises to strengthen my feet and everything connected to it in the kinetic chain. This is not something that most people think about so thank you for passing this knowledge on! Keep posting awesome content!!!
I really needed this. Thank you!❤ i have implented more mobility work because of you and im not looking back! Thinking about all parts of the body and not just the muscles everyone focuses on

at the beginning of the pandemic, I spent way more time barefoot on hardwood than I ever had before and had so much foot pain. I started just wearing crocs around the house but pivoted hard, focused on strengthening my feet, and transitioned almost exclusively to barefoot-style shoes. it was a bit tough at first but it was so worth the work!
I have tried the exercises and o boy, my feet are in bad shape especially my big toes. Will do some of your exercises, starting NOW. Thank you for creating awareness.❤
Great video, learned a lot. In the past 3 years, I happened to be barefoot almost 90% of the time and I've realized that now, i don't get foot pain after multi-hour walks as much as i used to. Don't know if it's directly a resut but it definitely seems to be connected.
All of this, 🙌. My husband got really into running over the past couple of years and we both completely changed up our foot health. I’ve always preferred working out barefoot and avoid wearing shoes whenever possible, so it wasn’t as big of a transition for me as it was for him, but getting my feet assessed to find the correct shoe size, switching to wide toe box shoes for my day to day activities, and including my feet when stretching and working on mobility have been game changing.
This is so helpful & I love your wise words about the long game. No quick fixes just common sense 😊 I went to a podiatrist & he told me I didn’t have bunions ( I do!) & he made insoles for me that cost around $160 that did not work at all. I am going to purchase the vivo trainers as I have been deliberating & now you have persuaded me 👍
I'm barefoot most of the time while I'm at home, and doing strength workouts as well (mostly because I'm too lazy to put on shoes, and I work out at home) 😄 The only thing that sucks is when I randomly jab a toe (and sprain it) against a piece of furniture... and then doing the SAME THING to the SAME TOE a month later 🙃
So true. I first learned this form Ellen Barrett workouts. For her own brand she started almost 20 years ago, all her Ellen Barrett Studio workouts (now her site is called Mindful Movement) are designed to be barefoot on the mat-cardio, stretch, strength. She preaches the importance of healthy feet and mobility, and her workouts not only work your waist, but make you sweat, they focus on the feet too.
Your video got me thinking....I might do my strenght training barefoot from now on. Thank you for that and for pointing out how important it is to be able to move your entire life. Over the last year my body started to hurt almost everywhere due to menopause. And after checking that there is no series health issue I decided to move even more because I know that not moving will make it worse. I even started something new and way out of my comfort zone: Karate. And this training really challenges my brain, my whole body and my feet...
Heck yeahhhh!! Started running 2 months ago (loving ittt!! training for a 14km race rn yayayay) but I am DEFINITELY feeling the need to strengthen my feet!
I have sprained my left ankle several (I mean like 20-30) times since childhood. I have found over the past 5 years that I do much better when barefoot as much as possible esp with workouts. I recently started at a gym. Might have to try those shoes your hubby got for you because the ankle/foot mobility is so different between shoes and bare feet.
Oh dear - i have hallux valgus (the crooked big toe) and this just "inspired" me to finally have them corrected (woohoo, so excited for my first surgery lol)
I have the beginnings of bunions. Most of the time they are painless, but in Winter time with snow and ice the ground is very uneven and walking makes the bunions hurt. About 2 years ago I went to see a doctor about them and he ordered x-rays to check the hallux valgus angle. The result: the angle isn't big enough for surgery so now we are waiting for them to get big enough. I was like whatt??? This is ridiculous. 😅 I don't want surgery if I can do something to avoid it. I always train without shoes on (strenght training, yoga, walking workouts...)! Feels a lot better and gives me more strength. I also only buy wide shoes, because I can't stand my feet feeling cramped. Definitely going to try these exercises!
What a great topic! I've enjoyed using less and less padding, support on my feet and daily life and I'm SLOWLY trying to use less when running or doing similar outdoor movement. But I would reemphasize that the toe box is SUPER important: like, my old "ballet flats" were NOT good for me. I also wonder what you're thoughts are on those who do go barefoot for cardio? I knew a few college athletes who would run outside completely barefoot, which seems risky. But in a safer environment, is it a good option for really healthy and strong runners?
Love this video. I am currently suffering a flare of plantar fasciitis - would you recommend me reducing shoe wear? I basically wear them 24/7 as it reduces the pain.
Just to add - I have seen a physio a year ago who diagnosed ankle weakness and gave ankle and calf exercises/stretches but these don't seem to work anymore?
I suffered this for two years and in both feet at one point. But I discovered yoga really helped and actually fixed it in as little as three sessions. I did adrienes yoga videos on UA-cam
I've needed exercises for my plantars fascitis, that i have in both feet for so long. My mom got me to roll my feet on a frozen water bottle like my Papa and her had to do. Bc that's what helped my Papa. I also tried bending my feet up and down just off the edge of the stairs. That's helped too. I'm going to add in your exercises too. And I'm barefoot at all times. If there's not much snow, I'll wear sandals to get stuff from the car.
I'm going to try these... my issue is my foot cramps when one leg/foot goes on bench for split squats. Have to pointe /stretch it to get rid of it. Getting too old for this 🤣
I cannot move my toes (other than big toe) individually. My toes are wack. Can you suggest ways to regress or modify the toe raising exercises? I feel like i’m just looking at them willing them to move. 🦶
I had plantar facitis and a specialist gave me cushioned inserts a custom sole and orthopedic shoes and i dont know if i can go barefoot because of the foot pain But now im thinking to try exercises for the feet
My feet keep growing bc of yoga everyday. They’re huge now. I’ve blamed it on having kids, but that’s not it. Now I’m having RA symptoms and my Feet hurt (intense crushing cramps) when I dance for 5 minutes. Or when I’m rollerblading or roller skating my feet hurt after 5 minutes and I have to sit in the path and take my feet out and rub them. So I’ve stopped skating. Will these help with standing while cooking? I realized that I get a good amount of pain in my left thigh in the back if I’m standing for a while when I’m cooking in socks or bare feet. I’ve been working out in bare feet or socks for a few months now, and feel like my feet have gotten stronger. I thought that would help it, but it still happens to me sometimes.
Hi Justina, I recently heard a podcast called the skinny confidential that had a guest on who is a physical therapy Doctor, Dr Shannon Ritchey. She has a company called EVLO that has strength training programs which do not include exercises like heavy squats, deadlifts and overhead presses, which are some of my foundational exercises. I once heard a spine doctor online saying people who lifted heavy were his biggest customers as their discs were compressed etc. So my ears perked up when I heard her talking about this. Do you have any thoughts about what they teach at EVLO? There are a couple of workouts online, and they have a one month free trial of their membership program with the code SKINNY. I appreciate your opinion and thank you in advance. ❤
Never heard of them! With a quick glance at their site, I disagree with their ideology: "We target one muscle group at a time. This approach builds muscle without wearing you down." I approach strength training from the lens of training movement patterns, not muscle groups. That's more aligned with physique competitors. I also would be curious what "heavy" means in regards to deadlifts, squats, and overhead pressing. Sounds like fear mongering to me.
@@JustinaErcole I actually wrote with you about Shannon a few weeks ago! Her approach is very interesting and specific. Personally I haven't tried any of her workouts (I have my own irl PT) but I have listened all of her podcast episodes. You two have very different approach to training, so you making a video on Evlo would be fun.😁
Would the drills you showed help with heel pain? Mine isn’t constant but when I’m on a cleaning spree and I’m running around the house without shoes for hours, my heels become increasingly sore.
The arches of my feet instantly cramp if I try lifting my big toe from the floor without letting the other toes join in. I realized this today, 2 min ago 🥴😂
Interesting - I’m a barefoot/no shoes gal and I recently developed a corn on the bottom of my foot. Dr told me it’s a pressure point and I shouldn’t be walking around barefoot. I now have to wear a cushioned slipper while in the house.
I do my leg days barefoot to get more foot involvement. But I’ve been trying to find some barefoot shoes that aren’t ugly. Call me vain, but I do care about the way my shoes look. I would like them to look feminine
IDK why I cannot give up shoes while lifting. I don’t even go to a gym. Something about it just feels weird and wrong about it (even though I have no problem doing Pilates or yoga barefoot.)
I literally only wear a supportive shoe while lifting or if it’s too cold to wear a moccasin. Otherwise, I’m barefoot all over the place. It’s totally a mental block! 😂
Who knew feet could be so interesting? After 5 minutes research, it turns out having your first toe longer than your big toe (like mine) means you have a “Greek Foot”. Which according to Foot Shape Personality (a real thing apparently) I am “a creative individual who loves bringing new ideas”😂😂😂 Gotta love the internet sometimes!
Honestly this is the main reason I prefer working out at home to the gym- no shoes, bliss. It's so dumb to insist on shoes when you can't even stremgth train properly with them on. Wearing shoes makes me feeling like a fucking horse.
I broke both my ankles at the same time in 2020. I ended up having a tibialis tendon reconstruction and ligament reattachment surgery.
Hahahaha I love that!
I'm imagining Instagram's new trend being foot workouts. #strongfeet #shoeless
That’s a trend I could get behind!
Honestly this is the main reason I prefer working out at home to the gym- no shoes, bliss. It's so dumb to insist on shoes when you can't even stremgth train properly with them on. Wearing shoes makes me feeling like a fucking horse.
Hahahaha honestly same
Had to bust out your dogs to pump up your views? 😂
hahahaha whatever works
