2014+ YFZ450R Factory Bogging Issue, Fixed for Free

- Apparently all YFZ 450R made since 2014 have this same bad bog issue, when I picked up my new 2016 YFZ450R SE I was pretty disappointed to find out that the issue is still present, the engine took quite a few cranks to start and would stutter and flare out while riding at low RPM or low throttle.
Adjusting the Throttle Position Sensor like this tells the ECU that the throttle is open a little farther than it actually is, so the ECU puts a little more fuel in to compensate. Your luck with this fix may vary, and the amount of adjustment needed will vary from bike to bike. I ended up leaving mine set at 0.81, and it seems like the quad starts up much faster, and the bog is pretty much eliminated.
Tools needed:
Torx Safety T20H bit
Safety Pins
Digital Multimeter
-Make sure quad is fully warmed up
-Set multimeter to DC V 20
-Slide safety pins in between insulator and wire until it contacts metal pin inside for yellow wire and blue w/ black stripe wire (make sure pins are not touching each other or the frame!)
-Turn ignition key to ON but do not start the engine
-Test voltage from TPS (yellow = positive, blue/black = negative. Factory spec will probably read between 0.62 and 0.68)
-Loosen bolts to TPS slightly to twist it slowly (adjust in 0.05 increments, higher number is richer)
-Re-tighten bolts after adjustment and re-check voltage to make sure it didn't change while tightening
-Be sure to remove safety pins from wires, have fun!!
Side note: I am not an engineer for the YFZ and although this mod should not have any adverse long-term side effects, I take no responsibility if you break your quad somehow with this mod.
Thank you sir, this trick worked great on my 2014 yfz450r. My stock setting was .70 and I found that at .85 the bog started to go away and it ran best at .95. When I went above 1.0 it would'nt idle right and sputtered when I let off the throttle. Its 90% better now. Very glad I found your video.
I got a 2013 yfz450 and tried what you just showed, and man it worked. Thanks so much. Keep up the great videos. It saves us soo much money watching UA-cam university. 👍
Since doing the mod has your idle gotten higher?
It work for a bit now the problem is back. Yamaha dealer mechanic and manufacturer technician can't fixed the problem
@@chonjio1 did you fix it?
Great video man and always better to put tools away..it’s good practice
My brand new 21 would bog real bad and die while shifting so i bought a vortex ecu and now its better then perfect! No bog, no killing, and crazy throttle response even on a stock bike
I have a 2017 yfz and it won’t idle do u know what the problem can b
@@omarstanley4922 what I just did was replace the battery and adjusted the throttle cable slightly and we’ll see how it goes
i am definitely trying this tomorow because it gets really annoying. Bought 2017 yfz450r and its a pain to ride it at low rpm low throttle, too much stutter. i just hope that this will solve the problem for me, thanks for the video.
no problem! I ride tight technical trails most of the time, so I also ended up going down a tooth on the front sprocket and that combined with this fix has made it a joy to ride!
Get a ais delete kit.
I have a 2020 yfz will run ok then decides without warning at lower speeds to shut off. Had a pc5 but didnt do anything getting vortex
Thank you my 09 purrs now 😁
It happens on the 09 through 13 models too I have a 13 and it dies the same
So I guess you pretty much just adjusted the idle right
I have raptor 700r same year as your 450. The problem i face is that when I am on the 3rd gear and rev the RPM high it kinda cuts out for a second then pushes. it happens for me only on 3rd to 5th gear only. first and second work just fine. I wonder if this solution would help me fix it.
You probably need a new gears
Is the .81 working winter and summer or do you have to make seasonal adjustments? I'm in winter here so it's about 30deg out with elevation about 1000 ft. I have moved it from .687 to .708 and its better but may need more adjustment. Thanks for the video. I have a test harness from peak racing to make it easier to adjust. Thanks
My biggest issue was high hanging idle so I'm guessing it was a little lean on idle or low rpm range.
I'm working on a 16 450r se
Do you think you could make another video showing me what you're adjusting its hard to tell in this video notes hard to get the camera in their wire working on it but if you could make another video showing exactly what you're screwing with his my needs adjusted bad
Sorry, I've since traded out my 450 for a Raptor 700 since I've been riding slow pace rough trails more than high speed slidey stuff lately
How is that reader adjusting that ...
Any is6with it since the video??
Did this actually work? I feel like the bike would still be lean all he did was turn throttle up
do the 2017 have the same issue
I got the K&N with yoshimura pipe and power commander and got it all mapped out at my local Motorsport store and it still wants to fall on its face when I'm in high RPM going around corners and down shifting. Will this do anything for me ?
I don't have any mods, so I have no way to be sure about your setup. However, since this is free it's worth a try! Let us know how it turns out!
SoCal SevenSixoH send it back it to the shop should only want to fall on its face taking off or going slow
Get ride of the power commander and go vortex
Does anyone know how to lower the idle once ypu do this
Ilde scree5
i have a raptor 700 2016 should i get a 450 do they have any problems like this yfz or fo i get a ltr suzuki
If you're thinking about buying a 450 in addition to the 700, I say absolutely go for it! It's definitely more stable in high speed corners or doing donuts, and the high revving engine is lots of fun. I would rather have the 450 for high-speed fire roads or mx-style stuff, maybe even sand dunes for the stability sideways on hills.
But if you're thinking about replacing the 700, I would be hesitant. Now that I have owned both, the Raptor 700 is just a better all-around machine than the 450 is for most of the riding I do. It will keep up with any 450 in the fast stuff just fine, but is much easier to ride when the trail gets slow. If there are obstacles on a trail that you have to crawl over, or you have to start from a stop on a steep hill, or if the trail is rough/rocky or filled with huge tree roots, the 700 really shines. The torque that only a bigger engine can give you down low is GREATLY appreciated in all of those situations, not to mention the plush suspension on the 700 won't beat you up like the 450 does, having reverse is quite nice, and the maintenance will be cheaper due to the valve setup.
braapmasterflex thank you for advice but do these yfz450r have proboems or issues
The problem I fixed in this video is the only problem I ever had with the quad, other than the suspension being too stiff for my bad back
l have the same problem l al new rider waranty covers that ??
put a exhaust and optimizer on yours i put the hmf pipe and fuel controller on mine and the bike just lifts so much power and it fixed 90% of the bog
MattyYFZ how much was tht in total
Just got a hmf exhaust on my 16 yfz450r and did this trick, I set my on 0.92 and runs great, no popping 😁
I need help please!!!!! How are yall setting that..I need to understand what that is

I have 2012 yfz450r. I can do it too?
Axe Vax no it’s only fi versions for 2014 & up. U have a carb version
B1boi i have a 2012 yfz450r, it has a throttle body with injectors
Did you go to school for that?
I gave my yfz450 to Yamaha dealer and they can't fixed the problem bogging. Even a engineer tech from the manufacturer came to fix it and have not able to fix the problem. They check everything from engine to electrical. Does anyone has any clue or has the same problem? Now I don't know what to do. I bought new and never had any problem until my last ride. Its 2013 yfz450 never abused
We are in same situation, same bike, same year, bought brand new. Never had a single issue in 7 years. All the sudden not wanting to start, then when it starts you give gas and it dies... Did you ever get to the bottom of it and figure out the fix?
My used to do that, give it gas and it dies, it turned out to be a gasket, piston, and coil fix
Revs a bit high it seems
.
Lil to much for my liking not good
the idle is so high now though
braapmasterflex it's actually a lot higher compared to the beginning of video where u stalled it twice
now that you mention it, it does seem a bit higher, should be easily adjusted by the idle screw though.
braapmasterflex did you lower the ldle ?
I actually traded the 450 for a Raptor 700 since I mostly ride trails these days, videos coming soon!
idle seems way to high now
Then adjust idle?
@@damianmlamb it’s fuel injected lol
Do it work on 2020
Just get the vortex. Just picked mine up on wY gone with it. Don't do this to a new quad
Get a gytr ais delete kit. That is supposed to fix the problem
My 2021 has never done this
it’s not that bad unless you keep feathering it low rpm and stabing it frm idle
or you can buy a vortex :)
Maybe if I had extensive mods a 700 dollar ECU would make sense to tune it how I want, but if you've just bought a brand new quad and just want to get out and ride it without it flaming out constantly without spending another grand on a new ECU before you can ride it this makes way more sense.
It will cost more then 700 once you cook your system trying to adjust fuel and air and rec limiter. That's why idle changes so high just do it right and be done
Idles way to high
Seems pretty ghetto for a 20 dollar block and have it done right
What 20 dollar block? If I get another YFZ450R, fixing it this way or with a 20 dollar fix is much preferred to a 1000 dollar ECU...
Lol is all I’m gunna say
Bro get a Vortex lol
Wtf
Seems like the worst way to fix it. Lmao.
Can you explain?
Dont try this at home.....
