About the Udayagiri Caves:
The Udayagiri Caves, located near Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, are a stunning collection of rock-cut caves and sculptures, roughly dating back to the 4th-5th century CE. These caves are not just a marvel of ancient Indian art but a powerful reflection of the Gupta Empire's golden age-a time when art, religion, and politics intertwined seamlessly.
What makes Udayagiri truly extraordinary is its blend of historical, spiritual, and architectural significance. Dedicated primarily to Hinduism but with traces of Jain influence, the caves hold some of the earliest depictions of Vishnu, Shiva, and other deities, intricately carved into the sandstone cliffs. The most iconic of these is the monumental carving of Vishnu in his Varaha avatar, lifting the Earth goddess Bhudevi out of the cosmic ocean, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
These caves were assumed to be carved under the patronage of Chandragupta II, an influential ruler of the Gupta dynasty. Beyond their artistic splendor, they served as a statement of political and religious authority, showcasing the empire’s dedication to Sanatana Dharma while emphasizing its architectural ingenuity. The inscriptions and carvings within the caves are believed to mark the early standardisation of Hindu iconography, making Udayagiri a critical site for understanding the evolution of Indian religious art.
Legend has it that the caves were a meditation ground for sages and ascetics, and even today, their serene atmosphere transports visitors back in time. Locals also believe the caves have connections to the Mahabharata, with some linking them to the Pandava brothers during their exile. This blend of mythology and history gives the Udayagiri Caves an enduring aura of mystery and reverence.
Today, the Udayagiri Caves stand as a timeless window into India’s glorious past, attracting history enthusiasts, spiritual seekers, and art lovers from across the world. They are not just caves; they are stories etched in stone, narrating a tale of divine artistry, royal patronage, and the enduring power of faith.

@@FozzieBhaiYou are welcome. Happy that I could buy you some Chai from New York on your amazing Journeys in my Motherland. I am living vicariously through you.
@@FozzieBhai Thanks for showing this little known ancient Hindu temple in MP, it's so unfortunate that majority of Indians are least interested in such things, even people living near there would not care much. You can live in India for over 100 years and you would still not see ALL .Safe travel where ever you are.
love your work ... Thanks for exploring all these magnificiant hindus caves
I'm witnessing some of the magnificent historical sites and cultures through your eyes.

Thank you so much for showing these hidden gems ❤
Never seen this before. Good job.
Fozz-man, the rocks that these caves were cut out of appear to be Shale. That means these were sedimentary layers of fine clay that were deposited by water or under water. It is rockified mud. This is why many of the sculptures were prone to flaking off and degrading due to weathering of layers over time. It is also possible that they were easily destroyed during wars, when the dominant powers would usually destroy artwork and buildings to demoralize and eliminate their enemy kingdoms.
Fozz, I see you panting a lot. Definitely exercise more, aerobics, running, etc. Take care of your health first, man. 😊
Shankhalipi ... "shank" means a sea-shell or a "conch". lipi means the writing or script. So shankhalipi is shell-script (pretty sure not related to Linux shell scripts). It has spiral characters that resemble conch shells. You will also hear priests blowing on shanks in the temples (sort of like a hooter/trumpet to announce that prayer is about to commence). Have no idea why a civilization in the middle of India (with no sea shore) would evolve with a script that looks like conch shells.
Great job Fozzie
Maybe they locked it off for safety reason. Maybe, some of the materials are unstable in the locked off area. So count yourself fortunate.
there's a very strong reason for caves being locked up... mostly human malice and interference but also erosion might have damaged the cave ceiling and it can randomly fall down causing fatality of visitors. and nobody wants to see blood spilled in places of virtue and prayers.

All are budhist architectures..hindus have encroached it..the statues are of bodhisatvas ..
And if i say Devi tara is Hindu deity buddhist just encroached it .. does that make sense...not right 😂
Many buddhist gods in mahayana and tibetan Buddhis are taken from hinduism like mahakala and yama. Buddha took birth in ancient india and spend all his life here. He was an indian and Buddhism is one of the 4 indian religions. All buddhist sacred sites are in india except for lumbini. Oldest buddhist temple Mahabodhi is in india, oldest BUDDHIST structure sanchi stupa is in india. The way india has taken care of it's buddhis heritage is remarkable and should be appreciated
Hindu kings promoted buddhism and it's well written in chinese monks fuxian and xuanzang transcripts when they came to India. So No need to spill poison among these two sister religion
