- Does it hurt when you do deadlifts? Try this easier way called a Sumo Deadlift or Sumo Squat. This exercise is easier on your knees than a traditional deadlift if you do it correctly. You can use a kettlebell or dumbbell. Turn toes out, drop your hips and bend your knees, then drive up through the hips. Squeeze glutes at the top.

So a sumo squat and a sumo deadlift are the same exercise performed the same way?
A sumo squat activates your hamstring and glutes while a sumo deadlift will activate your quadriceps. I found it very hard to get going the first time because it's really tricky to activate one or another but over time you'll get it right.
