What Happens To A Barbados Cherry After Being Planted

  • One week ago, we moved a Barbados Cherry tree (also known as Acerola) from a container into the ground. Within that week, the tree pushed out a new flush of flowers, whereas the other trees that are still in containers have not. This video demonstrates the importance of keeping tree roots cool; if container growing, consider moving your tree to an area where it will receive shade from the Phoenix sun in the summer.
Special thanks to Brandon and Alyssa from Greenie's Garden ( / greeniesgarden ) for assistance in making this video.

Wow! Who'd a thought such a spindly li'l tree(more like a bush, lol)could give so many flowers and from what you tell us, each flower is a cherry! Thank you Shamus for sharing what you know on fruticulture! :)

You need to trench in your potted plants and cover with shaving pine or cedar that will help your moisture and keep cooler.

    This tree really fast growing.
I bought this tree the shape like 1 Slender stick branching into three. Managed to train as bonsai, i cut it really short. Only in 2 month (cut and grow). I cant believe now it looks like a tree with almost full of canopy. Strong taper branches with good ramification.
I have been stick in bonsai things for 5 years, never find any tree faster than this before.

My Barbados cherry tree flowers, and start getting the fruit buds... but they end up falling off. , I think it's just too hot right now here in South texas. But it's growing. Slowly but surely.

Very good hypothesis but I’m pretty sure it has to do with the oxygenation of roots which only happens in ground or fabric containers.
Plastic containers don’t breath well at all and trees hate that.

Also, you probably added Neptune Harvest.. I add that too, and noticed after adding that, it usually flowers soon (some within 1-2 weeks); maybe the mulch too?

I have acerola cherry that has been with my for years.. sets of heaps of flowers just like yours or maybe more but no fruit. I did manual pollination (did not see any pollen) and change location as it maybe the heat but no avail. I wish yours has many successful fruits.

I have the same problem. The issue is that where I live (Minnesota), we don't have the little native bees that it attracts, which are from more tropical areas. Every year I try by hand, one year we got about 5 to make it. This year I am more hopeful because there was some actual pollen in the q-tip, if not there is next year. Mine is in a pot, and indoors most of the time, every year it does flower. This year more than ever.

this is a common issue, ive read, and the solution is to make a spray with honey and water..its sprayed on the flowers to attract pollinators.said to work like a charm@@carmenortiz5294

wajdi alzaher if you don't mind putting in a little time, I bought 4 seedlings on Amazon maybe 2 months ago for about $25. Potted 2 indoors and 2 out on my patio. The 2 indoor plants have tripled in size. The 2 outdoors are just about double their original size. Where I live, it's been an average of 103 degrees for the last 2 months. Look into it. Best of luck.

Hi shamus, I planted my Barbados cherry tree around end of September , beginning of October in chandler az. I was curious if it’s common for it to drop most of its leaves during the winter, and if they will come back? Thank you sir!
